Book Description

Made in Japan examines the artistic dialogue between East and West as it played out between 1945 and 1970. During this post-World War II period, Japanese printmakers effectively acted as ambassadors, bringing their aesthetic traditions into fruitful interaction with contemporary American trends and forging ties with artists, scholars, museums, and collectors. This volume presents for the first time an integrated history of innovative visual experimentation and pioneering cultural patronage.

The creative print (sosaku hanga) movement originated in the early twentieth century, when Japanese artists sought to modernize their practice by embracing Euro-American concepts of originality and autonomy. The movement matured in the decades following World War II, when second- and third-generation sosaku hanga printmakers continued to experiment in stylistic, technical, and thematic terms. From the early 1950s, Japanese printmakers participated in a newly global art scene, achieving great success at international art exhibitions sponsored by the American and Japanese governments.

The prints in this book range widely in treatment and medium, embracing woodcut, stencil, lithography, etching, mezzotint, aquatint, and screenprint. Made in Japan includes essays by Alicia Volk and Helen Nagata and biographies of the artists.

5 out of 5 stars new art movement in post-War Japanese society.......2005-05-30

In the rebuilding of Japanese society in the years after its defeat in World War, there was a "creative print movement [that] brought modern European artistic attitudes such as self-expression and formalist innovation to the Japanese woodblock print, a medium that had been rooted in the mass-production of popular images for several hundred years." The latest stages of this movement are becoming more widely known in the United States with the popularity of the Japanese manga and anime. The predecessors of this recent Japanese art are seen in the colors, designs, collages, subjects, and treatments of the post-war prints in this volume. One or two prints of 59 artists are shown in the main section of about 70 pages. These range from dark, tangled visions from having witnessed the devastation from the atom bombs to abstract designs to brightly-colored, comically erotic figures. Biographical sketches of the 59 artists follow the main section.

5 out of 5 stars YOU SHOULD... NO YOU WILL READ IT!!!!!!.......2007-07-09

This is one of the best Manga I've ever read! (Best for Korean, for manga in General, DNAngel rox a little more)It's funny, scary, and completly messed up! Perfect for any beginner, because it has almost all points, just not super powers, half animal people, and... that's about all it's missing! I LOVE IT!!! Buy it or face the consiquences! ^_^

3 out of 5 stars Cute, but not ethralling........2006-06-27

    The art is nice, of course, but I'm left wanting some of the chemistry between the characters as in DD. The characters get more interesting in the following volumes, but a little to fluffy for my taste. I'll still read it though, since it IS kara ^.^;;

*also, a correction to the above spotlight review: TWO of the guardians are searching for DY; the other two are protecting her.

3 out of 5 stars Cross-dressing, romance, angels, devils, spirit possession and er... (have I forgotten anything?).......2006-05-30

Yaay!!!!!!! The artist duo Kara and writer Lee Yuh-Hee of the glorious must-read Demon Diary series have created this Angel Diary series. However, although both series have similarities in artistry and style, Angel Diary is unconnected to the world and people of Demon Diary.

Chun-Yoo-Nim, the cute but not beautiful daughter of the royal family of heaven, is engaged by her father to the young king of hell. In order to escape her wedding she runs away to earth and poses as a normal teenage boy called Dong-Young. In the first volume of the series there are a few issues left unexplained, for example where is she living, if anyone is posing as her parents, and where does she get her money from. Four guardians from heaven who, would chance have it, are also posing as humans in the same school and vanquish evil spirits, are charged with finding her and bringing her back to heaven.

While trying to hide from the four guardians, Dong-Young also has to cope with being constantly possessed by ghosts and the strong advances from Bi-Wal another boy in her class. Of course Bi-Wal has a hidden idenitity and secretly knows that Dong Young is in fact a girl. Apart from the unanswered questions, the first volume also suffers from being slightly disjointed in places and not being as laugh-out funny as Demon Diary. The creators admit that they were rushed into finalizing this first volume.

However, the plus points far outweigh the minuses. The strory is funny and very very cute; Bi-Wal looks like a young version of the OMG gorgeous Eclipse from DD; there are echoes of the first volume of Eerie Querie with the spirit possession; cross-dressing elements; and a strong romantic theme throughout that was missing from DD. Indeed it is almost worth buying the volume for a copy of gorgeous half-dressed Bi-Wal picture at the beginning of the book.

If you are a fan of manhwa (Korean manga), the Demon Diary series, or Eerie Querie, this series is a must-buy. Hopefully the story will become stronger in the next volume and I can give it 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars For fans of the fantastic Demon Diary.......2006-03-09

Demon Diary was one of the best manga series i've ever read. I just loved it so much, from the story to the characters it was pure gold. And though Angel Diary isn't connected at all to that wonderful manga, I'm seeing the greatness these creators possess shining through once again.
All the things treasured in Demon Diary, are back here in Angel Diary. The story thus far is one of pure hillarity. But even so, I can't help but wonder what will happen down the line, it's turing out to be quite an inchanting plot. The characters, of course, are to die for. Their personalities alone are just amazing, they are so easy to instantly fall in love with.
Even without Demon Diary, Angel Diary can stand alone as what is sure to be a great new manga. I can't wait to reach the climaxes the story is sure to have. Hopefully we'll get to spend more time with these characters then we did with Demon Diary's short (but amazing!) 7 volumes.

    5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-02-27

It's fantasy but also some reality and the characters are completely realistic as well. Great buy, have read it several times myself in a few days. I can't wait for the next volume!

From the creator of the cyberpunk manga Battle Angel Alita comes a new tale of Alita's world. A thriller of crushed metal and spilled blood that takes place in the dystopian Scrapyard, it is drawn in a dark, expressionistic style that keeps it true to the spirit of cyberpunk science fiction writing.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Mystery Story.......2005-08-10

Set in the world of Battle Angel, although before the time when Ido discovers Alita, "Ashen Victor" focuses on the intense sport of Motorball.

Specifically, the story focuses on a down-and-out competitor who seems unable to avoid crashing in every race. He's crashed many times and is stuck with a low-end race team. Basically, he's in a pretty low spot. His only comfort seems to come from the friendship of a beautiful prostitute who lives nearby.

The story progresses into a fantastic mystery with a great surprise ending. Well, maybe not a surprise if you are well read in mysteries, but still excellent even if you have an idea of how it ends.

The artwork is not quite the same as in the Battle Angel books. In this story the world is created in large areas of pure black or pure white. There is very little cross hatching or shading (when compared to the B.A. books). It's a little like Frank Miller's "Sin City" although not as extreme.

I am a huge fan of Battle Angel and this book did not dissapoint me in any way. I enjoyed getting another glimpse into the Motorball world and also into The Scrapyard (when you see how a stranger interacts with a seemingly lost and crying child on the streets you will see what I mean.)

A quick read, but very enjoyable. This book stands on its own in every way. Don't miss it!

4 out of 5 stars If you liked Gunnm, try this one out too........1999-12-31

I quickly fell in love with the Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita) manga, and had to pick this up as well. After reading Ashen Victor, I was by no means disappointed with it as some were; in fact, I was pleased to see the versatility of Kishiro's style. Although I do feel that the manga could have been longer, the reader still gets a good feel for the characters and the plot is well-executed. While it may not live up to the art and beauty of Gunnm, it is a good, solid story and a great addition to any Kishiro fan's collection.

4 out of 5 stars A nice followup to the Alita series.......1999-08-24

Some don't like the art as much, but Kishiro is simply using a more monochromatic style in this book, and I personally feel it fits the mood of the story much better. The story, theme and characters are once again top notch, and it was nice to see Kishiro work with a smaller scale of story telling. The odd mixture of mechanical violence, technology and humanity works just as well as it did in the far more epic Alita series. This guy should really be making sci-fi films with enormous budgets. ;-)

4 out of 5 stars Well. Sorry Yukito but You could have done better.......1999-03-24

Being an Alita fan, I bought this title because I loved Yukito Kishiros story line, Art, and just the overall feel you get from the future punk setting. After I read it, I was rather Disapointed. Mainly because [having Previously read all of the Alita novels] the art wasn't as good as I have seen him do. It was a real fast read and just didn't live up to his previous work. -Ravick-

In The Producers, Luke Ford profiles major players in entertainment including Edgar J. Scherick, creator of ABC's Wide World of Sports, Stephen J. Cannell, whose television programs have grossed over $1 billion, and Jay Bernstein, former manager of Farrah Fawcett and Linda Evans.

The life of a typical Hollywood producer is a "profile in frustration." What drives these middlemen to subjugate their own egos for more than a decade, at times, to make a movie or TV show?

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Producers Unmasked.......2004-08-28

What is a producer exactly? In Hollywood, most people will tell you that the term has various definitions but in Luke Ford's massive exploration -- nearly seventy interviews with film and television producers, some whose name you may know, others who have been relegated to obscurity -- what emerges is a portrait of the producer as artist.

Don Phillips' tale of the making of the groundbreaking "small" film "Melvin and Howard" is worth the cover price alone. Did you know that Jack Nicholson and Mike Nichols were nearly attached to the picture? (Phillips didn't want to wait a year for Jack's availability)Elvis Presley was next considered for the role of Melvin Dumar:

"Elvis was on his last leg," Phillips tells Ford. "He was fat and jowly and passed out."

Elvis agreed, in June 1997, to do the film after he finished his latest concert tour. Six weeks later the legend was dead.

On a related note, producer Judd Bernard's anecdote about actress Annette Day -- who starred in only one film, "Double Trouble", a 1967 Elvis Presely vehicle -- was so telling about the capriciousness of show biz and life in general that I adapted the tale into my new play about an obsolete Hollywood producer, "Last Summer at the Marmont."

Among the other notable names in the book -- and there are many -- are TV wizard Stephen J. Cannell (God bless "The Rockford Files" and keep it in syndication for many years to come), Jay Bernstein, and a particularly touching interview with the late Edgar J. Scherick, creator of ABC's "Wide World Of Sports."

I have known Luke Ford in both a personal and professional capacity for almost seven years now. Often I have been one of his biggest detractors. "The Producers: Profiles in Frustration" is a piece of work that I would never thought an autodidact like Luke capable of, namely a book that is a must-read for anyone contemplating a career in the entertainment industry and, more importantly, the unknowing millions who believe that producers are nothing more or less than Hollywood fat cats with a cigar in one cheek and a bikini-clad babe in their lap. The interviews in this book prove that in the Hollywood food chain, producers are too often overlooked as -- dare I say it? -- fountains of creativity.

This is a very well researched and written book with many fascinating details about Syd's life. We are lucky to have it, as Syd is not exactly George Washington, inspiring biography after three part biography.

Also, much is not known about Syd. If you are interested in learning more about him, I highly recommend this readable and insightful work. But there will always be much that we will not know about this fascinating artist... this book is a good place to start.

I, like many people, and many more to come, became a Pink Floyd fan after their best work had been completed. However, I (like many others) have been so taken with the music that I had to do some research on the somewhat mythological founder and now insane recluse. This book is a definite page turner for anyone who is truly interested in Syd Barrett or Pink Floyd.

If you have, this book will undoubtedly enlighten you on the origins of Pink Floyd and Syd's subsequent demise. Crazy Diamond is a thoroughly researched book which is sympathetic to Syd's material. It portrays him as a vulnerable person who couldn't cope with the pressure of having to perform, after having almost single-handedly written the Floyd's suberb debut album Piper At The Gates of Dawn. A fantastic read . . . buy this book!

4 out of 5 stars Until the real thing comes along.......2000-01-12

A good enough book, full of stories, reminiscences, apocrypha. Unfortunately the writing is not that great, so all the trivia doesn't really give you a feel for who Syd Barrett was and why he's so fascinating. The definitive Madcap bio is still to be written, but for now this'll have to do...

      3 out of 5 stars Okay.......1999-01-29

This is an amusing enough read, though rambling and somewhat poorly written. We don't really gain too much of an understanding of the man or his music, but then information about both has always been scanty, and this books does its best to at least find out the truth about reported incidents of his life.

        Book Description

When the pharmaceuticals giant Merck reports promising results for a potential "blockbuster" drug, the story makes the evening news. Now, at a time when new product development has become critical to success in so many industries, The Development Factory proves that process innovation-not just product innovation-can be the key to competitive edge.

In this multi-year study of pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, Gary Pisano explores the dynamics of superior product and process development in a highly competitive industry that lives and dies by its R&D and depends heavily on rapid time to market. His work reveals that behind the success of many new product introductions lies the development of novel process technologies that provide lower costs, higher quality, and increased flexibility.

Pisano challenges the widely held product-process lifecycle view of competition, which suggests that industries tend to emphasize either product innovation or process innovation. He also questions the notion that there is a conflict between pursuit of product innovation and pursuit of lower costs, arguing that product development and process development capabilities are complementary.

Extending the lessons to a wide variety of manufacturing industries, The Development Factory will guide companies toward unlocking the potential of process development and understand the patterns of organizational behavior and managerial actions that help create and implement new capabilities over time.

Gary Pisano argues that the development of distinctive and superior process technologies is a key source of competitive advantage. In a multi-year study of international pharmaceutical firms (with references to a variety of other industries), he challenges the widely held product/process life cycle view of competition, which suggests that industries tend to emphasize either product innovation or process innovation. He also offers a set of recommendations for the practices and approaches that can be used to unlock the potential of process development. In doing so, he provides a window into the more general phenomenon of how organizations create, select, and implement new capabilities.

5 out of 5 stars If you develop new products in the Pharm/Medical sector...........2002-11-20

In the final course in my graduate program, this was required reading to complete the program. With a background in medical and electronics instrumentation, I was not thrilled. Secondly, I was puzzled that anyone at Harvard would spend over a year to write a book with a fairly narrow audience--the right way to develop new products for the pharmaceutical industry. I wasn't disappointed. The development of new products in this sector is a different landscape from typical product development and manufacturing--a strategic chess game where timing, investment, weighing uncertainty and gutsy decision making are everything in the successful development on new products going through clinical trials. Pisano insights are good advice. If you an exec or manager, this would not be one of those popular business books. If you are in the medical sector, this should be part of your outside reading to avoid the potholes of new product development. Highly recommended.
