Book Description

Merce Cunningham and the Modernizing of Modern Dance is a complete study of the life and work of this seminal choreographer/dancer. More than just a biography, Copeland explores Cunningham's life story against a backdrop of an entire century of developments in American art. Copeland traces his own experience of Cunningham's dances-from the turbulent late '60s through the experimental works of the '80s and '90s-showing how Cunningham moved dance away from the highly emotional, subjective work of Martha Graham to a return to a new kind of classicism. This book places Cunningham in the forefront of an artistic revolution, a revolution that has its parallels in music (John Cage, and the minimalist composers who followed him), painting (Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg), theater (the "happenings" of the '60s), and dance itself (the Judson School of dancers). An iconclastic and highly readable analysis, this book will be enjoyed by all those interested in the development of the American arts in the 20th century.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Engaging but repetitive.......2004-04-19

As a highly unschooled Cunningham fan -- this is the first dance book I've ever read -- I found Copeland's book engaging in its scope, contextualizing Cunningham's choreography in relation to the leading cultural and aesthetic movements of the last half century. Copeland has essentially one thesis, stated fairly cleanly in the introduction. I would highly recommend the introduction. Unfortunately the rest of the book can be tedious and dogmatic as Copeland attempts to bolster his arguments through a strategy of repetition and exhaustion. Every movement and idea of the late 20th century seems to be a nail for Copeland's rhetorical hammer, and while I found the tie-ins and tidbits of history interesting enough to finish the book, I found the tone and structure of the book to be artificially argumentative and quite lacking in the openness and nuance that Copland praises Cunningham for.

5 out of 5 stars Superb tour through the 20th century -- and beyond.......2004-04-17

What an extraordinary book! Copeland does not just tell the story of one figure, even though Cunningham is a great figure central to just about every artistic movement of the last 70 years. Copeland also relates in lucid prose how each of those movements arose, what made it tick, and how its legacy affects us today. After the "culture wars" of the 1990s, there were very few individuals left standing who could both appreciate and criticize the twists and turns of modernism and post-modernism. Copeland is among this saving remnant. If you are looking for a strong-minded, witty, engaging, eloquent Virgil to guide you through the Inferno and Purgatory of art since the 1930s, look no further. Copeland's your man.

5 out of 5 stars Ogami Itto and Daigoro finally walk on the moon..........2002-12-21

You always have to be wary about what is going to happen next in the Lone Wolf & Cub saga, but I have reason to believe that "The Moon in Our Hearts," Volume 19 in this manga epic constitutes the end of a major act. At the end of this volume, in the titular story, Ogami Itto and Daigoro "walk on the moon," and wait until you see what that means. Volume 19 offers up five stories:

        (93) "Four Seasons of Death" offers a nice variation of the climatic battle between Lone Wolf and those who try to arrest him in a story where he is mostly a spectator to the action. A young woman on her way to her wedding is kidnapped by her lover, who holes up in a house and threatens to kill them both before letting her marry another.

        (94) "Wives and Lovers" offers another different love story between Chiga, the widow of a Fukaya Han retainer and Karube Genjiro, a cavalry officer, who had been searching for four years for the Ronin who murdered her husband. During this time the two have become--well, that is the question here, which only becomes further complicated when the pair cross paths with Lone Wolf and Cub.

        (95) "The Marksman" finds Retsudo Yagyu ordering Inaba Shigemasa, the foremost marksman of his age, to gun down Ogami itto, who has abandoned the baby cart to the sea and is climbing cliffs never climbed before by man (with Daigoro hanging around his neck).

        (96) "A Mother's Flavor" is a story in which a prostitute spots Lone Wolf & Cub walking through town in the middle of the night and decides that if she follows them she will be free of her servitude. Noting that any one may walk the Shogun's roads, Ogami Itto allows her to follow. The title comes from the fact that Daigoro eats to survive and the taste of their rice means nothing to boy, who does not know "his mother's flavor." Before their paths diverge, the woman tries to do something about that.

        (97) "The Moon in Our Hearts" finds Ogami Itto and Daigoro taking to the sea as the extended Yagyu clan comes to Edo for the final showdown. Meanwhile, Retsudo has the Shogun's finest warships patrolling the sea to blow Lone Wolf and Cub out of the water. Kazuo Kokie provides some of the most poetic descriptions of Ogami Itto's quest in this pivotal story that brings the assassin and his son one step closer to the end of their journey.

Once again there is a sense of the quiet before the storm, as Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima focus more of characters and less on a high body count in these five stories. Lone Wolf & Cub is a transcendent "comic book," now on the cusp of its 100th episode while maintaining a level of superior story telling that is unrivaled in the field. If there is something else this grand, I certainly have not heard tell of it to date.

5 out of 5 stars The Lone Wolf saga continues.......2002-08-03

The genre-defining masterpiece of visual literature that is Lone Wolf and Cub Saga continues in this book. Former Shogun's Executioner, the ronin Itto Ogami and his son Diagoro attempt to enter Edo, the stronghold of the dreaded Yagyu clan of Assassins to settle once and for all the feud that is the focus of the entire saga. Bushido (the Japanese warrior philosophy) is never as well illustrated as it is here as Ogami is forced to cut his way through men who admire him but are honour-bound to stop him. Powerful storytelling and stark, brutal visuals with few restraints.

4 out of 5 stars On to Edo........2002-04-16

This episode, Retsudo throws more fodder into Itto's path. An interesting passage in which Retsudo refers to and strategizes Ogami Itto as if he were an entire army, which for all practical purposes he is.

Also, there is an stylized melee in which we see none of the fighting, only the horrfified looks of peasants as they watch the massacre, with the sounds of battle and dying scattered through the images. Pretty grim.

If you're reading this review, you probably don't even need to be - if you've gone through the first 18, you'll keep on going.

I bought the original version of this book as a Christmas gift when it was released in 1991. It was so funny, I always intended on getting a copy for myself. I couldn't find a copy after that Christmas and it seemed to go out of print really quick. I have been looking for a used copy ever since. I was really "stoked" (buy the book to read a definition of "stoked") when I checked the web for used copies of the original that there was a new version out! I'm going to buy one and two more for gifts right after I finish this review. Although it's technically a reference book, I actually read it cover to cover before I wrapped it as a gift. I couldn't put it down. I found it fun, easy, and entertaining to read. Even a surfer could read it! (Just kidding. Chill out, Dude!)

            5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2000-02-18

I have tried many video guides for children with very poor luck. The latest to avoid is one put out by the New York Times. Since December, my 10 and 12 year olds and myself have watched 8 movies together from Ms. Minow's recommendations together. What fun we have had. I'm a fairly old-fashioned mom, and it is really nice to have a guide that allows me to select movies to watch with my children that are fun and not embarassing for any of us. Buy it. It is well worth the cost of a few videos.

1 out of 5 stars Tired old platitudes.......2000-02-17

What qualifies this woman to arbitrate what is and isn't good for kids? She seems to have the same mentality as the movie makers who think kids are special idiots that need pap for entertainment. There is nothing new here, and she has no gift for verbal orchestration. Roger Ebert, a childless man, offers more insight into what would or wouldn't be appropriate for MY kids.

5 out of 5 stars It has a lot of great movies for kids AND adults........1999-07-02

Yippee! Finally kids like movies that adults like, too!I'd like to give this ten stars.I like all the movies, and the kids think that it doesn't matter that there's no color in movies like Mr. Smith goes to Washington.I think people should read this book A.S.A.P.!

5 out of 5 stars It reminded me of movies I have wanted my kids to see........1999-06-18

This has been a great time consuming tool for me and my children. Many times I have racked my brain for a GREAT movie to watch with my kids on a Friday night or an appropriete babysitting movie with little success. This has saved time and arguing with my kids. If the book says its okay they can watch it then they can watch it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource for parents!.......1999-05-02

Wonderful collection of commentaries and suggestions for selecting videos for those rainy days with the kids. I used a highlighter to mark the movies we should get, but most of the book ended up highlighted!

I used Yahoo to see about this book initially. Wow, out of 9 reviews two gave it 5 stars but oddly had the same 4 words "I liked this book" and nothing more. The rest were a single star with one 3 star. Lots of misspellings and incorrect grammer, or just plain jibberish (the three star one was just a joke, I take it). I looked here to see if I could get any more than just one person saying they liked this book. I liked getting her past reviews for free on Yahoo earlier in 2007, but now they are hoping for book sales and won't let you look at her opinions for anything that is not recently playing. Because of this I was tempted to buy, but at $30+, I'm waiting to hear a lot more positive feedback before I purchase this item.

Hula i ka la means dance in the sun. Twirl. Leap. Dance like sunlight. Hula is such a joyous display of life that being a part of it in any way, as dancer or audience, makes you happy. Hula reveals the unseen soul. It can take you on a journey through each emotion life has to offer: its tragedies and triumphs, the sensation of a first kiss, the sorrow of loss, the strength of spirit, the splendor of one another. Hula is the dance of Hawaii, and the most graceful aesthetic expression of our Island culture. Hula is a lifestyle, provoking inspiration, songs, art, and imagination. Hula is a bond that joins the present with the past, and celebrates that union with incomparable beauty.
