A Must Own.......2001-12-07
For any admirer or Racinet's work, this book is a "must own". It is comprehensive, detailed and offers a great deal of information on Racinet's extraordinary lithographs. It is chock full of interesting facts pertaining to history and costume. The book stands on its own but is a wonderful complement for any owner of Racinet's prints. Wonderfully illustrated.
A 19th Century view of the history of fashion.......2001-01-17
This book is valuable in it's position as a 19th Century-written book on the history of fashion. For this reason, it would be invaluable to anybody researching the attitudes of the 19th Century.
However, for anybody wanting to research fashion it is of use only as a pretty oddity.
It is fun to look through - the coloured plates are beautiful. Some of them are quite detailed and can give a very good idea of the fashion, but it is necessary for you to do more research before accepting this as gospel.
Exhaustive and pretty.......2000-11-19
High on colorful graphics and low on content, "Historical Encyclopedia of Costumes" has neither a glossary to explain the obscure terms nor any sections explaining the guiding forces of the costumes' evolution. The right-hand pages contain the beautiful, albeit inaccurate plates, while those on the left hand contain the written captions for the illustrations. Sadly, most captions are simplistic and not very informative (how am I to know who a flagellant is and why he must whip himself?). The individual figures and costumes are rarely numbered (although the captions frequently refer to numbers that just aren't there); some of the figures don't have any captions at all, leaving the reader in the dark.
Nevertheless, the sheer variety of illustrations is to be applauded. Most of the world's regions and time periods are exhaustively covered, from Roman armor to the tribal costumes from the New Hebrides to the customary vestments of nuns of the Crusade era (unfortunately, and quite logically, there is no section on modern dress).
However flawed this work is, it does create interest in the subject and can serve as an excellent reference for authors of various forms of fiction.
No Use for the Historical Costumer.......2000-10-07
This book is not very useful to the historical costumer or those interested in costume history. Rather than paintings or drawings of clothing from their own time periods, it consists of redrawings in a Victorian style, thus distorting the historic lines.
It might be useful to theatrical costumers, Victorian recreationists or those interested in the history of costume interpretation or illustration. But it does not give accurate representations of the garments illustrated, so if you want to make historical garments, get books with pictures that are actually from the time periods of the clothing you're interested in.
Excellent source.......2000-03-28
This is an excellent resource! The illustrations are beautiful and many countries are covered. The descriptions are very helpful. However, the drawings are very stylized and a serious costumer or reproductionist will have to supplement your research for more accuracy.

Of the 20+ FBOFW collections, this is my favorite.......2002-02-17
"Pushing 40" was the eighth For Better or For Worse collection, and is made up of strips from approximately mid-1987 through mid-1988. While the present-day strip is the first thing I read when I turn to the comics page in the morning, I personally prefer the more humorous style Lynn Johnston employed in these early strips.
There are so many great moments in this collection, like Michael using green food coloring on his face for Halloween, then having to go to school the next day with a green face because the food coloring won't wash off, the wedding of Elly's brother Phil (This was, unfortunately, pretty much the end of Phil as a regular in the strip), John's misadventure with a dumpster while on his way to the aforementioned wedding, Michael showing Elizabeth how she can get more money from the tooth fairy (Run for your life, Lizzie!), John salivating over a sports car (and trying to convince Elly that it's practical), Michael and Gordon's experiment involving a spider and a microwave oven (Elly rescues the spider, sort of), and the remodeling of the Patterson family kitchen.
This collection also features my personal favorite FBOFW storyline: Michael, Gordon, Brian and one other boy are up in a tree, with a perfect view of Lawrence's stepsister's bedroom. They wrestle with their consciences until (to their utter disappointment) the shade goes down. Michael says, "Come on! Let's get outa here before somebody sees us!!," and starts to climb down the tree. Lawrence's stepsister is standing at the base of the tree, glaring up at him. Scrambling back up the tree, Michael asks his friends if any of them know the Lord's Prayer. Contemplating their punishments, one of the boys remarks, "It would all be worth it, guys...if only we'd SEEN something!" Absolutely priceless!
This collection also has its serious side, as when it explores our own mortality, with the death of an elderly family friend, Mrs. Baird (The Pattersons acquired Farley from Mrs. Baird approximately one year into the strip.) It's a touching and poignant sequence.

A Fun Book.......2007-01-16
This is for anyone who is into 1) Alaska, 2) Flying small planes, 3) humorous stories. Some of the stories are too strange to have been made up. This is a collection of short true stories from Alaskan bush pilots of the 1950's onward. Some are hilarious, some are hilarious only because no one got hurt and we can laugh about it now. It is a good quick read for someone who wants the flavor of the Alaskan frontier. It is a short book but fun to read. highly recommended.
An entertaining read.......2000-02-13
Rychetnik provides a brief yet entertaining look into the bush pilots of Alaska. His presentation is humorous and easy to read. Definitely worth a look for all those interested in the funnier side of bush flying.

Book Description
"
Generation Multiplex represents an important contribution to our understanding of the relationship between youth and the mass media, in this case movies. From both a personal and a professional perspective, I welcome this work which builds on themes and issues I addressed in
The Cinema of Adolescence in 1985."
from the Foreword
When teenagers began hanging out at the mall in the early 1980s, the movies followed. Multiplex theaters offered teens a wide array of perspectives on the coming-of-age experience, as well as an escape into the alternative worlds of science fiction and horror. Youth films remained a popular and profitable genre through the 1990s, offering teens a place to reflect on their evolving identities from adolescence to adulthood while simultaneously shaping and maintaining those identities.
Drawing examples from hundreds of popular and lesser-known youth-themed films, Timothy Shary here offers a comprehensive examination of the representation of teenagers in American cinema in the 1980s and 1990s. He focuses on five subgenresschool, delinquency, horror, science, and romance/sexualityto explore how they represent teens and their concerns, how these representations change over time, and how youth movies both mirror and shape societal expectations and fears about teen identities and roles. He concludes that while some teen films continue to exploit various notions of youth sexuality and violence, most teen films of the past generation have shown an increasing diversity of adolescent experiences and have been sympathetic to the particular challenges that teens face.
Customer Reviews:
A Necessity for College & High School Libraries.......2002-12-04
Because of my background interest in adolescent culture, I was very interested to read Dr. Timothy Shary's book about the image of youth in american film. I was delighted to find Shary's book not only to be well-written, but filled with insight and a pervasive gentle humor. The author successfully shows how film images of teenagers reflect pervasive social and political trends and often better depict adult fears of teenage behaviors rather than a realistic sense of actual teen culture. I found his dividing up the hundreds of films he describes into subgenres (like movies about school culture, slasher films, movies about love and sex) to be extremely helpful in placing the films in their larger context as well as to see how some concepts evolve while other archetypes appear to be repeated again and again.
As a librarian and teen educator, I felt that this work had a lot of value. With the emphasis on media literacy and critical thinking skills in education today, teachers and librarians need to be thinking about appealing ways of presenting information that will engage students into critically examining their culture. Using popular films that star teen characters and/or teen culture would be a good way to accomplish this goal, and Dr. Shary's book would be an excellent and accessible text to use as both a model and as background knowledge in this type of class. Because of the prevalence of cable television in the lives of teens, even the older movies from the 80s are likely to be relatively familiar and useful for discussions about historical trends and changes.
Dr. Shary should be complemented on this excellent, academic work on the image of youth in contemporary film. All college and high school libraries would be recommended to have a copy on hand and use it as a guide for collecting some key films of high quality for their visual collections.

Lots of things you were never told........2007-05-13
I really loved reading this book and had a hard time putting it down. It reads much like the Old Testament except the main characters are our forefathers. There is a lot of information in this book that they never told us in school, but should have. The authors of this book tell where they got the information and did a great job putting this book together. I wish I would have read it years ago. It's one of those books you want to pass on to others after you read it.
The Light and The Glory.......2007-03-15
In my judgment "The Light & The Glory" should be required reading for every citizen of the United States as well as those seeking citizenship. This is one of the best books I have every read!
The light and the glory.......2007-01-18
The information in this book is invaluable to each and every American. Now more than ever we should cherish our early beginnings in this country and pass this on to generations to come. The more intimate happenings to our early fathers become more relevant and personal through this well documented study.
Rewarding.......2007-01-10
The people taking Christ out of our daily lives by legislation need to read this book. It points out many times where, without the intervention of the Lord, the battle to establish this country would be lost.
Fascinating Read.......2007-01-05
A well-written book which provides the context for "In God We Trust". Peter Marshall has a viewpoint, and one which is sorely missing from the current historical scene. I found his narration of the Christian roots and history of America truly fascinating. I absolutely recommend this book for its perspective and readability.

Econometric Analysis (5th Edition)
ASIN: 0691003955 |
Book Description
This book introduces one of the most powerful tools of modern economics to a wide audience: those who will later construct or consume game-theoretic models. Robert Gibbons addresses scholars in applied fields within economics who want a serious and thorough discussion of game theory but who may have found other works overly abstract. Gibbons emphasizes the economic applications of the theory at least as much as the pure theory itself; formal arguments about abstract games play a minor role. The applications illustrate the process of model building--of translating an informal description of a multi-person decision situation into a formal game-theoretic problem to be analyzed. Also, the variety of applications shows that similar issues arise in different areas of economics, and that the same game-theoretic tools can be applied in each setting. In order to emphasize the broad potential scope of the theory, conventional applications from industrial organization have been largely replaced by applications from labor, macro, and other applied fields in economics. The book covers four classes of games, and four corresponding notions of equilibrium: static games of complete information and Nash equilibrium, dynamic games of complete information and subgame-perfect Nash equilibrium, static games of incomplete information and Bayesian Nash equilibrium, and dynamic games of incomplete information and perfect Bayesian equilibrium.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-03-13
I had heard of game theory but had never been exposed to what it actually was or how games were viewed, setup or resolved. This book was part of a PhD Micro course and I found it very readable. We actually used two books, this one and the game theory section of MasColeel. The Mas book is very encyclopedic to me and dense reading. Gibbons' book gives the concepts and applictions in a straight-forward readable manner. Highly recommended, especially if you are new or somewhat new to game theory.
Great book for serious students!.......2006-11-07
Many readers have commented on how technical this book is. I agree, but keep in mind, this book was written for students who aim to become economists, and a certain degree of technical difficulty is imperative. I confess that I struggled through the book, and I often came upon huge obstacles. But none of the difficulties that I faced were due to the book itself, all of the struggles were due to my own limited ability. But I guarantee, once you get through this book, you will be able to "use" game theory, and probably even incorporate it in your next research project!
This book was written for those who wish to use game theory in their next research paper, and it does an excellent job of it. If you are only searching for a book to understand game theory, then this book is not for you. But if you want to "use" game theory, then look no further!
good text book, but takes time and lots of thinking.......2006-07-10
This is the kind of book that cannot be scanned through, but needs to be read word by word. Some steps are not fully described and thus readers need to put in some thoughts in the game process. It presents some very interesting ideas and teaches a good range of game-solving methods.
Very good.......2006-06-25
This is a very good textbook for scholars who are instereted in applying game theory into the modelling of practical problems. It is quite application oriented.
excellent introduction (it's worth the money!).......2006-04-25
I've used this book both as a textbook and as a reference in three game theory courses, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It doesn't cover some critical applications to contract theory, but other than that it's absolutely thorough and clear.
I don't know if it would be all that fun for someone just looking to dabble in game theory without any academic interests. I can recommend Strategy by Joel Watson for those folks - much more intuitive and has lots of examples. But if you're academically interested in game theory at all, you have to get this book. It's a great reference, and absolutely worth the money (I can't usually say that about my textbooks!).
