Book Description
In much the way that the CD replaced the album, the poster has waned as a messaging vehicle. The poster has now become a postcard and e-mail blast, leaving many to long for the lost age when posters were not only major promotional vehicles, but also artwork worthy of framing.
Some of the world's best designers just could not stand idle while the poster fell by the wayside. They turned to the poster for personal expression and as an outlet from more restrictive mediums.
This book showcases their breathtaking artwork, which has proven that the poster can still serve as a worthy communications tool. In doing so, they've brought the poster back to prominence. In this book, the author has compiled the world's finest new work at the height of this rebirth. There is currently no book on the market that can claim it features a "definitive" poster collection.

Book Description
Clothing is the most personal expression of a culture. Objects of dress and adornment reveal so much about the individuals who wore them and the cultures and times in which they lived. History, art, technology, psychology, culture, social systems, customsall are reflected in people's clothing.
Countless treasures exist in clothing and textile collections across the U.S., but until now no comprehensive directory to the collections was available. Clothing and Textile Collections in the United States is the first guide to list information on more than 2,600 American collections. Included in each listing are location and contact information, and many listings also offer a brief description of the collection. This guide is essential for museum directors, costume studies professionals, and librarians, as well as anyone interested in clothing and textile history.
Customer Reviews:
not a photo plate book!.......2006-10-29
As a travel guide book it is quite comprehensive. At leaste so far as I thumbed through it. Even found the little house museum in my tiny little home town. And it does give notes in regard to what collections include. It is NOT however, a photo book that PICTURES the items in said collections. I didn't read carefully enough I guess, and had deluded myself into thinking it would have color plates. If you are fortunate enough to travel to see these museums, this would be an invaluable book. If however, you are like me, and can only afford to order the books published by the people who have seen the collections. This book will only make you wish you had a bottomless bank account and a car that didn't threaten to fall apart at the thought of going farther than ten miles!
comprehensive guide to all kinds of textile collections throughout the U.S........2006-09-11
Another book in the Costume Society of America (CSA) series, this guidebook has the familiar format of a tourist/visitor guide. The more than 2600 entries are by state with addresses and phone numbers. Hours, type of institution (e. g., historical, state), types of items in the collection, and a general description of these are found with many of the entries. For example, the Missouri Historical Collection in St. Louis has more than "16,000 pieces of clothing and textiles, dating from the late eighteenth century to the present." This collection's strengths include women's clothing and accessories from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Such helpful notes are one benefit of having editors with such extensive and deep experience as Queen and Berger. All historical ages, parts of the world, and many ethnic groups are covered by the numerous collections. For the majority of entries with no annotations, websites are listed where applicable; and for those which do not have a website, phone numbers are listed for obtaining further information.
Something for Everyone.......2006-08-11
This guide provides valuable information for costume scholars doing research and seeking collections. But more than that, enthusiasts, collectors,(of quilts or flags, for example), or just people interested in seeing clothing housed in museums will find this state-by-state guide easy to use and informative. Even if you can't travel far afield, you can take an armchair tour and enjoy the photographs and other material in the guide. Even though I consider myself fairly knowledgeable, this guide has revealed collections I didn't know existed. This guide is bringing to light many hidden treasures that deserve to be seen and appreciated.
A Great Resource!.......2006-08-09
This is an invaluable tool for researchers studying any type of textiles, from flags to clothing. The book is about as comprehensive as it gets, listing historic sites, museums, and other collections. There is nothing else comparable for those interested in this topic. Important details are included for larger collections, along with contact information for each listing. This is a wonderful book that was written to promote research and facilitate contact among those studying textile collections.

Generalissimo El Busho: Essays & Cartoons on the Bush Years
ASIN: 156163381X |
Book Description
A new anthology of brilliant cartoonists whose work appears in alternative weekly newspapers, ATTITUDE 2: THE NEW SUBVERSIVE SOCIAL COMMENTARY CARTOONISTS presents incisive interviews, personal photos and ephemera and of course lots of cartoons by 21 more of America's funniest and smartest cartoonists!
Comics fans will doubtless be familiar and enjoy this book's unique insight into the work of well-known artists like Aaron McGruder, who draws the daily comic strip "Boondocks," Max Cannon ("Red Meat," which you'll find in The Onion), Shannon Wheeler ("Too Much Coffee Man"), Marian Henley ("Maxine!"), David Rees ("Get Your War On," which appears in Rolling Stone) and Alison Bechdel ("Dykes to Watch Out For").
As with the first ATTITUDE, the real treat of ATTITUDE 2 is its spotlighting of cartoonists whose work is so good that it deserves much more attention. Other cartoonists featured include Jennifer Berman ("Berman"), Barry Deutsch ("Ampersand"), Emily S. Flake ("Lulu Eightball"), Justin Jones (Soda-Pong"), Keith Knight ("The K Chronicles), Tim Kreider ("The PainWhen Will It End?"), Kevin Moore ("In Contempt Comics"), Stephen Notley ("Bob the Angry Flower"), Eric Orner ("The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green"), Greg Peters ("Suspect Device"), Mikhaela B. Reid ("The Boiling Point"), Neil Swaab ("Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles"), Brian Sendelbach ("Smell of Steve, Inc."), Tak Toyoshima ("Secret Asian Man") and Jason Yungbluth ("Deep Fried").
The first ATTITUDE, which came out in 2002, focused on alternative cartooning with a political bent. Though ATTITUDE 2 doesn't eschew politics, its main target is those cartoonists out to make us laugh using novel approaches to humor and the comics medium.

A host of new subservice alternative cartoonists.......2004-04-04
There are a host of new subservice alternative cartoonists on the market: artists who put together political and editorial cartoons from a revolutionary, satirical standpoint - and Rall's Attitude 2 gathers some of the best of these presentations, scouring the alternative press for new voices who do not typically reach mainstream readers. From social commentary and gay life to cartoonist intentions, this pairs interviews with major new figures with black and white samples of their works.

Customer Reviews:
Poet lariat. . ........2004-02-11
Wallace McRae is a cowboy's cowboy poet. A rancher from Forsyth, Montana, with a gift of language, humor, and heart that makes his work rise far above the mainstream of this particular brand of American literature. This book is a collection of over 50 of his most popular poems, including classics such as "Reincarnation" and "Give Us a Song, Ian Tyson."
Writing in western vernacular, with clever turns of phrase and imaginative turns of thought, he covers a range of subjects from cowboys and ranching to boot shopping and hollyhocks. There are poems on gooseberries, coyotes, and the change of seasons, and many are tongue in cheek, like a cross-cultural conversation with a hippie and cataloging the trials of raising a son who takes after yourself.
Yes, many of the poems are "curmudgeonly." He complains about hunters and tourists, Californians and city folk in general, the environmental and social havoc of strip mining and clear cutting, and people who want to off-load their unwanted pets and unruly kids in the country. But just as often there is heart-felt sentiment, in the loss of a good hired hand who moves on, the loss of a neighbor whose ranch gets foreclosed, the retirement of an old rodeo bareback rider.
McRae's poems belong on anyone's shelf of western literature. He's the genuine article.

Book Description
Connie Bennett Cameron has assembled some of her best works in this compilation of poetic thoughts and commentaries depicting the very heart of Black America's struggle to become truly free. Each offering depicts life experiences as seen through eyes where battles are won and lost in the constant struggle to identify, tear down and destroy the invisible walls skillfully built to keep Black America in bondage. More than mere poetry, Riding Tall In The Saddle gives the reader a glimpse of the struggles and triumphs in the Black Community in pure form: straight, undiluted and unfiltered. Cameron poetically portrays episodes and events that take the reader to the streets of racism where dedicated soldiers still pound the pavement; marching in faith and in hope of a free tomorrow. We are taken behind the scenes of Black America where Blacks are pitted against each other. Here, the taboo topic of spiritual corruption in the black church is examined. Not only are the actions and motives of the Preacher Man examined, the actions of our black brothers are called into question as well. In the poetic piece "Brother Man", the question is asked, what's wrong with you? At the end, he is admonished to "Be A Man, Be A Black Man! Riding Tall In The Saddle is a must read. It will change the way you think about Black America.

Book Description
Deeply rooted in American culture, lore, and history, cowboys have shaped the imagination of generations of Americans--young and old. Presenting the development of cowboy and cattle culture from the days of Spanish colonial vaqueros to the days of the trail-drive cowboy, well-known writer and storyteller Angel Vigil shares the facts behind the myths of the American cowboy. Abundantly illustrated with photos and drawings, the book is organized into six broad thematic categories and uses a question-and-answer format to present the information. Packed with fascinating details and sources for further research, the book fills a gap in educational resources about cowboys as it is geared specifically toward upper elementary and middle school students.

Book Description
The playful quartet that penned the acclaimed Once Upon A Dyke and Stake Through the Heart are back are now turning to the Wild (and Very Hot) West to bring you another collection of erotically charged, action-packed, tales--this time gleefully taking on cowboys, school marms, snake-oil salesmen, saloon girls, preachers, bank robbers and lone gundykes. With the turn of each page, you'll wonder who the hero is, who the villain is, and who gets the girl--and if it's even the right girl!
You'll thrill as they reinvent the myths of the old west with a decidedly lesbian slam dunk, weaving tales of saloons, horses, bank robberies, sheriffs, cattle rustlers, guns and very tight corsets and loose women. You'll find enough romance, passion, intrigue, thrills, chills, hair-breath escapes, hot-and-wet sex, and death-defying acts of selfless love to leave you breathless and waiting for more...

Book Description
"Mozart's need for love had grown uncertain of itself in early childhood. His feeling of being unloved found constant confirmation in his changing experiences over the years, and the intensity of his unsatisfied desire to be loved, detectable as a dominant wish throughout his life, very largely determined what had meaning for him and what did not."--From the book
One of the most important social thinkers of our time provides a haunting portrait of Mozart's life and creative genius. German sociologist Norbert Elias examines the paradoxes in Mozart's short existence--his brilliant creativity and social marginality, his musical sophistication and personal crudeness, his breathtaking accomplishments and deep despair.
Using psychoanalytic insights, Elias examines Leopold Mozart's carefully honed ambitions for his son and protege. From the age of six Mozart traveled with his father, performing in the major courts throughout Europe. The elder Mozart worked on his son "like a sculptor on his sculpture," and this deep bond formed the lietmotif in understanding Mozart's early talent and complicated psyche.
Mozart chafed at the constraints of Viennese courtly culture. Growing up in a society which viewed musicians as manual laborers producing entertainment for the court, he fought for an independent livelihood. Vienna's aristocracy ultimately turned its back on the composer, who faced mounting debts, no work, and no prospect of fulfilling his innermost desires. He died feeling that his life had become empty of meaning.
Elias ponders the concept of genius, which he sees as a complex marriage of fantasy, inspiration, and convention. In exploring the tension between personal creativity and the tastes of an era, he gives us a book of startling insight and discovery.
Customer Reviews:
The righteousness of retrospective psychology.......2005-01-09
Mozart, as a toddler, watched his sister gain her father's favour by playing the piano. Due to some innate feeling of not being loved, he tries to garner daddy's attention by doing the same and fate has it that Mozart turns out to be exceptional. Leopold, like most, seeks fulfilment in life and now sees the boy as his opportunity. Due to his unusual childhood and his ever-increasing sense of being unloved, Wolfgang finds it hard to deal with the real world and lives in various fantasy worlds. Elias then uses tools from Freudian psychology to neatly explain how Mozart's strong imagination, musical sophistication and 'social consciousness' combine to produce works of genius.
Elias claims to be keeping the mystery of genius intact, but he seems also to be saying that Mozart's genius (or at the very least our ability to recognise it) lay in being able to keep his imagination sufficiently in check to capture the imagination of others before leading them on sublime journeys. Mozart's social awareness is what seemingly makes this possible.
And so the book goes on. Snapshots of Mozart's life are treated like a jigsaw puzzle and pieced together in the Elias/Freud paradigm. In my opinion, the unsatisfactory description of Mozart's decision to break away from his father shows that perhaps there are failings in making simplified, sweeping statements about one of history's most profound geniuses.
This book reads like a series of lecture notes that occasionally repeat themselves and lacks a sense of completeness. However, the beauty of the book is the evident love that the author has for Mozart. Indeed, one of its premises is that Mozart felt that his life had lost all meaning, gave up on life and wrote the Requiem for himself. Unusual for an intellectual such as Norbert Elias to subscribe to this famous idea, and also unusual that he noticeably underestimates Mozart's finances. But there's no doubt that Mozart's work resonated in Elias the pragmatist just as deeply as it resonates in all of us. His love of 'Mozart the man as well as Mozart the artist' shines like a beacon and makes the book an immensely enjoyable read.
A delightful essay.......2001-03-23
This small volume might be the perfect gift for the aficionado who owns all the other important biographies on Mozart.
Norbert Elias was a sociologist by profession. Looking at the life of Mozart, he asked what influence did the society in which Mozart grew up have on his development as an artist. Elias did not try to explain the nature of genius in terms of sociology, as the subtitle of the US translation implies. Rather, he tried to put Mozart's genius in perspective. The German title of the book made this quite clear: "Mozart. Zur Soziologie eines Genies", which translates roughly as "Mozart: Sociological aspects of a genius". The charm of the book really lies in the fact that Elias did not try to explain away the mystery of genius.
As a small extra for anyone who has ever wondered why so many important composers came from German speaking countries (Bach, Haendel, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Schumann, etc.), whereas France and England produced few composers of the same stature during this period, Elias's essay has a neat, little theory which provides some answers. It also warms the hearts of economists, by the way.

Book Description
Why is it that most amateur chess players love opening and middlegame tactics but hate endgames? Why do you usually look at only a couple of pages in any endgame theory book you see? Sit back, forget about theoretical endgames, and enjoy the entertainment of real life chess in Endgame Tactics! There is no substitute for hard work in getting better at chess, as a wise grandmaster once said. But you always work harder at something you enjoy. Make the first step towards improving your endgame play (and beat more opponents) by learning to love the endgame. Endgames are fun, and the examples from everyday practice in Endgame Tactics prove it.
Customer Reviews:
A good book could have been better........2007-05-30
This book got the English chess federation's book of the year award. This book is not an exhaustive manual but focuses on endgames that occur frequently in practice. The positions chosen are entertaining and educational; the positions were checked using Fritz, a strong computer chess program; that's the good part about the book. Unfortunately, the positions with 6 pieces or less were not checked with tablebases which play endgames *perfectly*. For example, diagram 287 on page 135 gives white's move 1 b6? as an error. This is not true. The win is still there until 4 Kb3? which should be drawn but then black plays 4...Rh3+? handing the win back to white. The final position is still a white win which the book claims is a theoretical draw. Perlo says "I refer you to the manuals". He should have said "I refer you to the tablebases". If the editor Peter Boel had taken this one last step the book could have been even better.
Fantastic book.......2007-05-10

The most enjoyable endgame book I've ever read.......2006-12-17
I'm well into this book, and it's great fun. I've always loved tactics books, and this is the first endgame book I've ever encountered with this approach. Middlegame tactics books like this helped me reach master level; I wonder how far an endgame tactics book could have helped me go? I never found endgames as much fun to study (til now). :-)
Probably one of the 25 best chess books I've seen in over 30 years. I highly recommend it to players and fans at any level!
PS - This book has been named the English Chess Federation Book of the Year 2006. There's a great discussion of Endgame Tactics on Mig Greenguard's Daily Dirt chess blog, if you search for the book title there, too.
Excellent & Amusing!.......2006-09-07
"Endgame Tactics" is an amusing romp through the part of a chess game that most of us agree is the most boring. Van Perlo presents many tactical positions, organized according to the remaining pieces, displaying tactical motifs. Van Perlo also engages the reader with a level of banter uncharacteristic for a chess book, making "Endgame Tactics" much more enjoyable that those typical dry chess tomes that we are all too familiar with. Although there are better books to read if you want to actually learn proper endgame technique, this book is still worth reading. You will obtain a tactical perspective into endgames that I have not seen anywhere else.

great product!.......2007-06-01
This book is in great shape and has a lot of useful information.
A nice aid to figuring out how to buy that first house..........2003-06-21
I bought this book about a year before I started looking for my first house (when I knew ABSOLUTELY nothing beyond the fact I wanted to buy) and I found this book to be an indespensible aid. The real beauty of it, for me at least, is Ms. Glink's ability to get you thinking about all the myriad issues involved in buying a home (including the biggie - do you even want to do it) in a constructive way with language that is easy to understand. I love that she includes the emotional issues (that are so often overlooked) alongside the financial, legal and practical issues. The breakdowns of real-estate language and the worksheets are nice touches, too. I have recommended this book to everyone I know who utters that magic phrase, "I'd love to buy a house someday...".
A must have for the new homebuyer.......2001-12-23
I am a 25 year old looking into buying a condo in Chicago. I just finished the book and it taught me so much about what to expect going into this major purchase. The author explains what you can reasonably assume a bank will loan you, different financing techniques and important emotional and financial issues you will have to resolve before choosing a home. Its easy to read and engaging. I usually have a short attention span for manuals, but I read this cover to cover in a week. I never lost interest. If you're a renter and at the point where you're starting to think you want to buy, read this book for some great tips and advice so you don't fall into any "gotchas" ahead.
Good for buying homes, but not apartments..........2000-12-08
This book is an invaluable resource for someone looking to buy their first home: Glink takes the reader through the home buying process step by step, and the amortization tables in the appendix definitely come in handy. However, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for someone looking to buy a co-op or a condo. When I was looking to buy a co-op apartment in the city, I found the CO-OP BIBLE to be much more helpful--it was the book I turned to when I needed help with every aspect of that process.
Valuable Read for the First-Time Buyer.......2000-11-19
I recently read Ilyce Glink's "10 Steps to Home-Ownership" and came away impressed. She has great worksheets, and an objective, no-nonsense approach to the home ownership process. I recently closed on a home in the Southern California area and used "10 Steps" to prepare me for the process. I found myself referring to Eric Tyson's "Home Buying for Dummies" more than this book once I activeley looked for a home. However, I felt "10 Steps" was a good starter for the process and the worksheets made me comfortable with what I wanted and how much I can afford. One small complaint: she includes 70 pages of interest rate amortization tables which could be easily translated on one page.
