Book Description
This magnificent book, the highly anticipated catalogue for the first collaborative exhibition in the United States between the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, brings together a selection of notable French paintings from the Pushkin Museum, one of the world's great art museums.
Lavishly illustrated and beautifully produced, the book tells the story of the Russian taste for French art. Essays highlight such collectors as Catherine the Great, members of the Russian nobility such as the Yusupovs and the Golitsyns, and the early twentieth-century
merchant-patrons Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morosov. The book's authors relate how works from these distinguished collections were united at the Pushkin Museum to form one of the most impressive arrays of French paintings outside of France. The book reproduces and discusses seventy-six of the museum's most important holdings, including masterpieces by Nicolas Poussin, Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Camille Corot, Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso, some of which, like Monet's Le Boulevard des Capucines, are also landmark works in the history of art.
This splendid collection of paintings, the majority of which have never before been on view in the United States, will be exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, from December 15, 2002, to March 9, 2003.
The exhibition will then travel to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta from April 5 to June 29, 2003, and to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from July 27 to October 12, 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Brillant.......2003-05-30
I was privileged enough to actually view the Pushkin exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston a few months ago. After seeing the book on amazon, for less than the book shop, I knew that I had to buy it. Every time I open it, I'm reminded of my visit to the museum. I love almost all of the paintings, but of course there are always a few exceptions. As an art student myself, the paintings by the masters, such as Picasso, Cezanne, and Renoir, serve as an inspiration. So, is it worth it? Absolutely!

Customer Reviews:
One of the best, if slightly sappy, comic strips going.......2002-02-02
This is a collection of Rose Is Rose comic strips, one of the few decent ones not to appear in the Washington Post (along with Foxtrot and maybe Funky Winkerbean). They're a bit sappy at times: son Pasquale has a helpful guardian angel and is too good to be believed. On the other hand, the artwork is excellent and some of the ideas superb. Rose, the mother, has recurring fantasies of being a biker babe, which are brought out at odd moments. Dad is a great tease, at one point getting onto his knees with his shoes under them and telling Pasquale that he got that way because he didn't eat his vegetables. Certainly very entertaining.
Astonishing..........2001-03-06
It's amazing what Pat Brady can do with an inflexible little rectangular panel. Even more amazing is that he never seems to "phone it in"--every strip seems to be drawn with more enthusiasm than the one before. Given how so many of our greatest comic artists (Waterson, Breathed and even Larson) retired young because they felt they couldn't avoid getting stale, "Rose Is Rose" should be given an award for being as fresh as the day it was created.
For that matter, set down your copy of "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" and pick up this instead. You'll probably learn more about relationships, parenting, and just getting along from it than you will from any ten best-selling pop-psych books.
So, why didn't I give it a 5-star rating? The Sunday strips aren't in color. Simple as that. There are good financial reasons for this, I'm sure, but it does detract.
Great Book!.......1998-08-11
I'm a long time fan of Rose is Rose (hi Pat, remember me?)... I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading the script and especially to those whose newspaper don't carry it
... I've always loved the strip because of the artwork and the humor. The different perspective in which the artwork is drawn is definitely what I love about it. And the humor and other things is light hearted. Anyway, buy this book it's great! :)
On par with Calvin.......1998-04-11
For a comic whose subject matter is devoted to the cutesy foibles of little pasquale and his mom and dad, Rose is Rose contains astonishingly complex and emotionally detailed characters. The humor is crammed with subtle intelligence and the artwork is exploratory and stimulating to look at all by itself. I am someone who has a low threshhold for smarm, but somehow the inhabitants in pasquale's little world have gotten under my skin and make me feel all warm and fuzzy./
Laugh at life with Pat Brady and crew in a License to Dream........1998-03-20
Let Pat Brady give you a peek into the lives
Rose Gumbo and family in a License to Dream!
This book presents everyday life in a typical
household in a not-so-typical manner.
Rose is a housewife and mother who has a alter
ego of a biker chick. Jimbo is the father who
is still little boy at times.
Pasquale is a child with his own guardian
angel and Peekboo is a cat who is constantly
amazed by the antics of his humans.
A License to Dream will give you chuckle when
you read it and perhaps inspire some dreams
of your own!

Book Description
Apes of Wrath brings together in one volume British cartoonist Steve Bell's viciously funny visual record of the Bush presidency and the Blair sycophancy with a colorful running commentary straight from the monkey's mouth: "I admired his steely determination and his relationship with Jesus, and he understood my need to git Saddam from day one."
From Poppy Bush's first stormin' desert excursion in 1991 to the madness of George II's Baghdad bash, this book also includes the shocking story of the war on terror in glorious color. Read it and prepare to be blitzed!
Steve Bell is Britain's most imaginative and radical satirical cartoonist, whose award-winning If . . . strip has been appearing daily in the Guardian newspaper and the Guardian Weekly for over 20 years.

Customer Reviews:
I am completely addicted to Booster Packs.......2005-09-20
Since WoTC launched these pre-painted booster packs, I have bene absolutely addicted to them. don't play the miniature game, but I do use the minatures for regular pen and paper gaming. Like the other sets, the stat cards include the minature game stats on one side, and the official d20 stats for 3.5 on the other side. If you see minis as a hobby and enjoy putting them together and painting them, these aren't for you. The quality doesn't compare to a well painted metal mini. But if you are artistically handicapped like me and just like having tons of minis ready to torture players with, these are a must.
No Angels But Some Fire.......2005-09-14
This is a continuation in the D&D Miniatures line and maintains the quality of prior releases while adding a few gems.
Probably the best set so far..........2005-09-02
In terms of monster/figure variety and quality of minis. The paint jobs keep getting better and showing more detail. This set in particular has a good number of large figures, including the cool mounted paladin. For Dnd gamers, there are many interesting monsters and villains in this set. For fans of the skirmish game, there are also figures you'll want to add to your next warband.
A solid expansion.......2005-08-13
D&D Minis have three basic purposes: as pure collectibles; as pieces for the miniatures game; and as figures for D&D role playing combat. In the first category, this set is a knockout. It features some of the best sculpting to date, and the painting has definitely gotten better. As pieces for the D&D Miniatures game, I've heard both good and bad about this set. It will probably be months before all of the strategies shake out and we know for sure, but certainly this expansion adds some very useful minis (including an uncommon commander that's quite handy).
But, I'm a D&D role player, DM, and long time fan of using minis in role playing. How does Angelfire stack up? Superb! It's rare that minis give me ideas for my games, but this set has done so many times over. I'm in love with the flaming skeletons, and simply must find a niche for them in my game. The PC races are well represented and some of the new takes on standard NPC / monster races will play nicely into my Greyhawk game. If you use minis for role playing, drop the metal paints and rush down to the hobby store for a few boxes each of the basic set and Angelfire. You won't be disappointed.

Find the right candidate for the job every time
Adler's insightful new POWER hiring methods enable managers to attract, assess, and recruit the best candidates through the integration of online tools and offline behavior modifications. New information on hiring and the Internet, diversity, and legal compliance issues is included.
Customer Reviews:
A definite must read for any manager.......2006-11-28
I highly recommend Lou Adler's book, Hiring with Your Head, for any hiring manager seeking to hiring the best talent. Hiring with Your Head provides an overview of a proven systematic approach for hiring superior people by focusing on their past performance rather than relying on intuition.
Lou Adler provides a methodology for critically assessing candidates' potential for evaluating how well their past accomplishments meet the requirements for a position. He also goes into depth on how to successfully source and recruit talented individuals to your company.
The star is for the digital version, and Amazon customer service!.......2006-06-04
Beware: If you buy the digital version from Amazon, it forces you to use Microsoft identity, and you will not be able to download the file then load it in your reader... No, you must open up a security hole in your firewall to make the pre-file send encrypted information to God knows where, then you can only read it on that identity. It is Microsoft bound so I don't know if you Mac guys or Linux guys are covered here, on PDA side, forget PDA that is not the right terminology, Pocket PC it should say.
The whole thing is Microsoft bound, and if you like me are behind a corporate firewall you are unable to get the book at all.
Customer service will read 1% of what you write and even ask you to include the order # on your replies... not via email, but like all corporations with customer service which really sucks. You must login to there webpage and email from there, no inconvenience to great... When you at the end ask if they can replace with the paperback version, they ignore it completely and send an auto- responder returning the money to your credit card... I wanted the book, but that is not possible unbelievable enough, the order I ordered it with which still is not shipped from Amazon could not have the paperback added, so if I wanted it they could send it as an extra for 12 $ in shipping costs on top, instead of helping me save by tossing it in a pack still to be sent!
I believe this book could be great, but due to the extreme restrictions on this e-book and lack of service mentality I will never find out. So for all I recommend you to buy the paperback version, to avoid the dissapointment.
Good Practical and Relevant.......2006-03-22
OK let's get it out there... people who have very little to live for read business books. 99% of the stuff written is of the most egregious quality known to mankind -- people with any sense avoid the business section in any bookstore. It is the special writer indeed that can make their experiences relevant to the rest of us, impart knowledge and wisdom, who goes beyond the pump-me-up-and-let's-all-feel-good-and-happy-clappy version of corporate America -- the kind commonly encouraged in some national sales conventions. You know! The type that tries to convince you they have secrets of business success by regaling you with stories on how important their "new" business discoveries really are, when really they are variations on the benefits such banal things as getting up early, not watching too much TV, changing your socks, and giving people hell the occassional time (preferably all of the above done based upon some abstruse mathematical formulation).
No... Lou Adler is the real thing. Not full of beans or full of himself most of the time. The advice he gives is practical, well organised and starts with the premise that, when you hire someone you should use the job as the screen for the candidate -- in order to draw those qualities out of the candidate and also to organise your presentation of the job. Adler says, "do not start with percieved requirements of the position" as these do not deliver the results needed.
There is a lot of technical detail and healthy, not corny or forced anecdotal evidence such as is legion in most of this genre.
I have seen Lou Adler on two occassions and can concur that he is one of the most down-to-earth people you can meet. In a world rife with industry setting unrealistic targets Lou is able to lay it on the line and tell you what you need to do and not what you want to do. There is no percieved, strained intellectualism or claims of revealed truth or knowledge that you get in other such reads as Zig Ziglar or Gerardi, or (horror or horrors, Wess Roberts -- author of the worst sales coaching book in history "The Leadership Secrets of Atilla the Hun).
I have recommended it for my corporate clients on occasion and can do so with a straight face and strong measure of encouragement. It actually reinforced those elements of hiring that we were doing right, and forced us to change those elements we were doing wrong - can there ever be a stronger recommendation for any book?
Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-05-06
Lou Adler, president of the Power Hiring consulting and training company, provides a systematic approach for finding, interviewing and hiring the best candidate for a job. He emphasizes making an objective assessment and, to this end, he provides techniques for overcoming first impressions. He identifies four key interview questions you can use to determine job candidates' competency and motivation, and to match their skills and interests to your company's needs. The book includes charts and checklists that highlight important points. We recommend this well-organized guide to effective hiring to company owners, human resource personnel and managers involved in the hiring process. Alert job seekers may also find it useful to learn what a good interview will demand.
An On-Target Update.......2002-11-22
The second edition of Lou Adler's Hire with Your Head takes the best of the original concepts and updates it with the latest insights on interviewing and the entire selection process. I've been able to introduce the POWER Hiring concepts to a major professional services with significant results including better retention and a reputation as an employer of choice. I've seen hundred's of clients report more confidence in their ability to accurately interview candidates.
One excellent example of this update should be a revelation to many managers and human resource professionals who have been inundated with books recommending the "152 Best Interview Questions." It's the answers, not the questions that count. Adler's POWER Hiring formula recognizes the importance of getting and properly evaluating candidate answers.
From the starting point of Performance Profiles to the insights on the latest recruiting tips, Lou Adler courageously tells managers and HR professionals what they're not doing right -- and what to do to make it right.
It's rare that I read both a first and second edition of the same book -- but this second edition captivated me with every chapter.
