An excellent costuming resource.......2000-07-06
I found this book educational and stimulating. Perhaps it's best feature was the combination of historical detail with instructions for practical application. The patterns can be a bit confusing, as can some of her terminology. Both of those hurdles can be overcome with a little patience. This is not a book for the beginning costumer, but I was able to utilize it very well at an intermediate level. For anyone interested in stage costuming technique I'd say this book is a must. It also contains detailed and illustrated instructions for fitting a bodice. WaHey!
Costumes for theatre.......1999-12-15
i just recieved this book and i love it. I noticed that a couple of things were different because it was an english print but i thought it is one of the most resourcful books to have. i love to make period clothing from the victorian age and this book was a good source for me on clothing from that period.
The best reference to costume construction I have found yet!.......1997-05-09
I believe that Jean Hunnisett has some of the best resources available to the modern dressmaker. I have been trying to find ways of making dresses of certain periods and this book takes a person step-by-step through how to make clothing; from corsets to crinolines to the actual dresses themselves. She shows how to make a variety of styles from one pattern and actually has scaled models of the patterns that are needed to make the articles of clothing. The only information that is not provided in the book is how and where to modify the pattern to make is fit someone that does not have her size. But with common sense and a little patience a person can figure it out. This book is a must for any costume designer or even the intrigued dressmaker looking for a challenge

Book Description
Explore women's shoes as a powerful talisman of fashion, culture, and sexual energy. With 500 original color photographs, and two dozen vintage illustrations, this book tells the real story of Hot Shoes: One Hundred Years. These are the shoes real women wore, and loved enough to save. You'll see designer shoes by the likes of David Evins and Palter De Liso, who were influenced by haute couture but marketed to the upper middle-class. Since this is a book for collectors, you'll find a true cross-section of shoe design. There are coquettish pumps from the French Room at Chandler's, jeweled platforms by Frank More of San Francisco, and early canvas high-button shoes by Keds. Each photo caption includes a value range, and each photo is lavishly styled, in the same manner as the author's previous book from Schiffer Publishing: Collectible Women's Hats of the 20th Century.
Customer Reviews:
I have to agree.......2002-04-08
I pretty much agree with the former reviewer. I didn't find the photos to be out of focus, but indeed some of them are shot eg. with such bad lighting and bad composition that they can't be made out at all. Others don't even come close to matching their captions, and the inexplicable big black boxes on several pages are just weird. The neverending use of obscure French terms (some of which aren't even in the glossary) comes off as rather pretentious.
Why does a book whose cover says "With Values" include so many that are valued as simply "Special"?
A disappointing addition to the literature on shoes.......1998-12-12
Having ordered by catalog three copies of this title before it was released, I was truelly disappointed when they arrived. An expensive book, it suffers greatly from amateurish and often out of focus photographs as well as poor design. The photographs are badly set up, with distracting superfluous props which obscure the object of interest - the shoe. Given that this is primarily a picture book rather than a textual history, it is ironic that the photographs are so inferior. Where shoes are modeled, they often appear ill fitting, or are shown in inexplicable full figure shots where you cannot see them well, detracting rather than adding to the allure of what could be fabulous shoes. The inexpensive books on the same subject by Linda O'Keefe or Pattison & Cawthorne stand far above this recent addition .

The solar system is being spring cleaned. Under the supervision of celebrity planetary make-over decoratiste Arisotle Halcyon, the number of moons of Jupiter is being brought down to an aesthetically pleasing level. Will the Doctor be able to stop dangerous experiments in genetic engineering and overturn a clandestine evil plan to conquer the solar system? Will Trix escape from the deadly space sheep? And will Fitz become the galaxy's next megastar designer on the future equivalent of "Changing Planets?"

Doctor Who: The Slaughter.......2007-02-09
This book in the Dr. Who series is very well written and was a very enjoyable read
Mixed review..........2006-07-17
Doctor Who: To The Slaughter, is a book which continues the adventures of the Eighth Doctor. The setting is the outer planets of the solar system, the long abandoned, slightly worn, seat of Earth's empire. The Doctor and his two friends, Fitz and Trix, soon find that the moons and planets are either being moved or destroyed so improve its Feng Shui.
No, I'm not kidding. But as the Doctor, and gang, digs deeper they found out that somebody, is in fact, trying to hide the development of a deadly weapon. Then they find out that somebody is trying hard to hide the fact that no weapon was developed. Then they find out...you get the picture.
Giant industries, corrupt officials, hidden subsidiaries, terrorists, aliens and artists are just some of the players within the twisted knot called a plot. Or should I say plots. Dune or The Fellowship of the Ring was less complex. Which is good - I hate guessing within the first five pages what's going to happen in the next 200 and so pages.
I also had fun guessing two out of the three alien bidders. One was a Kroton and one was a Sontaren.
Now for the bad. I never saw the made for TV movie that launched the Eighth Doctor into the world and, even after reading a few of the books starring him, I don't know if I like him or not. His character is hard to pin down and seems to be all over the place.
Now for the Ugly. The whole book feels like the author was making a script for the Doctors of the 60's and 70's. As if he was working with the idea that he had a low budget. So not a lot of special effects, no costly aliens and not too many scenes outside the bland cockpitsof the ships, sterile science labs and carpeted business offices of the space stations and so on.
Also I went through much of the book wondering what life was like in the outer planets. What was the food like? Were all spaceships shaped like bullets? Did space suits smell? For a book with over 270 pages I came away with very little impressions in the way of the background. Once again, I got a generic feel from the setting. And there were some mistakes, as the sentences sometimes seemed to have words missing. Nice cover. Get it used.
Too bad.......2006-07-01
I found this book to be unreadable. The flippant writing style distracted me from the story.
Hopefully, some readers will enjoy the author's writing style.

Before she married Ben Bradlee, former executive editor of the Washington Post, and became a society hostess herself, Sally Quinn made her living going to parties and reporting on them for the Post's "Style" section. Her years of experience as both guest and hostess have put Quinn in the perfect position to counsel others on the dos and don'ts of entertaining, and she does so with gusto in The Party. Granted, the average reader won't be faced with some of the problems Quinn and her beltway buddies cope with regularly--the president of the United States staying longer than expected at a pre-dinner cocktail party, for example, or the ambassador to Great Britain getting drunk and making out with a reporter (not his wife) in the spare bedroom. Still, Quinn points out, some things are universal, whether you're entertaining in an embassy ballroom or a one-room apartment in Queens: good food, good drink, and good company make for a great party. And even if you don't throw parties like Quinn does, you can still enjoy getting the dish on after-hours Washington . The Party is the next-best thing to being invited to Sally Quinn's house for dinner.
Book Description
In The Party, Sally Quinn turns her trademark sharp wit on the Washington social scene and offers an irreverent look at what goes on at the parties you read about in the columns. From seating debacles to real-life scandals, she reveals her firsthand experiences as a member of the Washington power elite to illustrate how to entertain for any occasion.
No one knows better than Quinn how to make parties work. She has thrown some of the most talked-about parties and has attended most of the others. As Quinn writes, all that is necessary is that the host live by the golden rule: "Treat your guests the way you would like to be treated."
The Party provides a checklist of ideas to help make the important decisionssuch as what time of day (or night) or month and how to choose the invitations, the place, the food, the booze, the setting, the table, the entertainment, and, above all, the guests. Within these guidelines, Quinn tells about her own adventures, stories, and techniques from all kinds of different partiesfrom the elaborate, formal dinner to the impromptu get-together. Her playful, poignant, and often hilarious accounts of party disasters from her own and others' parties will strike a chord with anyone who has ever entertained.
The Party is not only an amusing and lively glimpse into the party scene but also a useful and practical guide to making your own parties a success and guaranteeing that your guests will want to come back.
Customer Reviews:
A collection of Sally Quinn's name-dropping stories.......2005-02-10
The title of this book implies that it's a how-to-guide to throwing a great party. You do get a few tips here and there, but this book serves mainly for Sally Quinn to name drop, describe the fun parties she's hosted, and generally tell you how terrific she is. Sally Quinn was the style editor for the Washington Post; her husband is Ben Bradlee, the famous Washington Post editor during Watergate, the Pentagon Papers and a number of other significant historical events. The tone of this book is lighthearted, and many of the stories are quite funny. After a while, though, I got tired of reading about "when Hillary and Bill came over one time," or "when all these Senators and Representatives were at our house," or "when we hosted this fabulous dinner party and everyone in Washington was talking about it for weeks." The tone of this book was too self-congratulatory for me to fully enjoy it.
Adventurous, indeed...........2003-08-05
Formerly of Washington, D.C., I couldn't resist reading this lighthearted romp into Sally Quinn's world of entertaining. I don't believe Quinn wanted to write a book that laid out clear "do's and don'ts" á la Judith Martin, but instead wanted to lead by example - sharing stories of her party successes and misfires. Some of the stories are absolutely priceless, especially the ones involving Colin Powell. Quinn stresses overall the Golden Rule of Hostessing: treat others as you would want to be treated. Another one of my favourite tips is "no matter how bad the food is or what disaster befalls you in the kitchen, when all else fails, make sure you have plenty of booze on hand, and the party won't be a total bomb." So very, very true.
If you have some down time in your own world of adventurous entertaining, pick up this book and settle in for a good time.
Amazing - Hilarious - Insightful.......2003-02-14
I live in Bermuda and picked this book up at our local "high end" charity thrift shop for a dollar. Being from Virginia, I thought "Why not? - I entertain quite a bit, perhaps she'll have some pointers." Well, this book was SO funny, SO GOOD that I took it to six different countries with me while reading it. I got to the final four chapters, left it in the hospital accidentally, and am now frantic to find another one. I read parts of it to my hubby, and being a non-hostess-like, rugby playing Canadian - HE even found it funny!!! This book is PERFECT for us retired old sorority girls that still believe in crystal wine glasses, cloth napkins, and a proper dining room. - Would love to get all her books and meet her!
One name drop to many.......2002-12-17
I entertain a lot so I bought this book thinking in was a guide to entertaining.I am not from the USA so I didn't have a clue who this women was I also hadn't heard of half the people she mentioned.I found the book boring and thought that Mizz Quinn was a big headed bore. There are many good books out there on Entertaining but this is NOT one of them
A page turner.......2002-04-20
OK, so it's not an etiquette book, nor is it a step-by-step party guide. The lessons are given via examples -- and what examples! The rich and famous -- including Sally herself -- are all grist for the mill.
But the key factor is Sally's breezy writing style. It's good enough that I am back on Amazon looking for other books she has authored.

The most informative Bond book I've ever read.......2004-11-09
David Giammarco says he's a Bond fan. Lot's of people say they are something, but David Giammarco is what he says. This guy loves Bond and he lets it all hang out in this book.
For Your Eyes Only:Behind The Scenes of the James Bond Films is exactly what it sayd it is. It's full of behind the scenes information for all 20 movies from Dr.No to Die Another Day. There are interviews with people who worked on the films. David talks to directors, producers, writers, actors, and anybody and everybody who worked on the films.
There is an overview of each film and then the interviews. The interviews are your basic Q&A format. David interviews anybody and everybody that had to do anything with the films.
I love the interviews with the guys who played Bond. They all talk about the love they had for the films and the fun they had making them. They give you their perspectives on the movies and the things done in the movies.
The interviews with the Bond girls are fantastic. Some of the most beautiful woman to ever live have been Bond girls. From Ursulla Andress to Halle Berry you have interviews with most of them. They are all awesome ladies who enjoyed the pictures and love the place they have in pop culture because of it.
If your a Bond fan you have to pick this one. I doubt you'll have a question that this book can't answer. I've been a Bond fan for over 15 years and this is the most informative Bond book I've ever seen. You won't regret buying this one.
Excellent buy for any fan of the 007 films.......2003-06-13
If your a fan of the James Bond films and you want to know everything about the films than this is the book you have to buy. This book gives a great behind the scene look at the films and at the actors who portrayed the suave secret agent. Each actor is interviewed by the author, and share there point of view on Bond. Also each movie is featured and discussed. I think this book is very fun and a great read. I really enjoyed the authors style of writing and hope he writes a book like this about the Bond novels in the future.
The Definitive Bond book.......2003-02-28
Amazing! I've been a fan of the Bond films for over 20 years, and this is the first book that has brought together everyone's first-hand accounts. Almost every Bond book I've been disappointed with because they were written by arm-chair quarterbacks, but David Giammarco is a journalist who has been a part of the 007 world, spent time with most of the Bond particpants, and can truly write what it is like to be on set and behind the scenes. It is very well-written, with many interesting facts and stories that even I'VE never heard before! His interviews with Roger Moore were quite amusing, and reading Sean Connery tell his version of Bond-mania was very fascinating. Getting to hear Timothy Dalton and George Lazenby's side of the story was also quite interesting. It was also great to see how well Mr. Giammarco showcased Pierce Brosnan's contributions to the series. Mr. Brosnan has been vastly underrrated in the media, but this book gives us far more insight into the man and pays him his due rewards (after all, we all know Pierce is the best Bond since Connery!!!) The author and Pierce seems to have a really good relationship, and perhaps that why the normally reticent Mr. Brosnan opens up as much as he does.
Plus, you can't beat hearing all the many great stories from the "classic" Bond directors like Guy Hamilton and Peter Hunt, Ken Adam (his account of Connery almost being eaten by a shark during the shooting of Thunderball was quite funny)as well as the many Bond Girls, Villains, cast and crew. I liked what Desmond Lewelyn told the author and I learned a whole new side about lovable old Q.
Also, the contributions to the book from Hugh Hefner, Kevin Costner, Harison Ford, and that infamous CIA spook E. Howard Hunt were quite fascinating and take this book to a whole new dimension than those other Bond books.
It's clear Mr.Giammarco knows the Bond legacy inside and out and his access to everyone is an invaluable resource for us Bond aficionados. I've been waiting a long time for a book like this - a really fun read. I highly recommend it. No Bond fan will be disappointed!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great advice, written very well........2007-02-24
With wonderful stories that illuminate the problems with customer service today, Phillip Van Hooser provides the reader with compelling reasons why taking care of your customers is critial to long term success. Building customer loyalty requires you to listen carefully to them and on some occasions, bending the rules or going the"extra mile". It's no secret that if a customer believes you gave them great service, they will willingly recommend you to others. Phillip covers these and many other points with straight talk, no jargon or catch phrases that can confuse some people.
If your looking for a book that can give you ideas on how to get your business back on track, this book is certainly worth the look.
Great Job Phillip!!
Willie's Way.......2005-11-15
Phil VanHoosier has a way of putting things into a clear perspective. I have purchased a copy for everyone in our shop, both front office and production. You will love this book!
Don't Forget the Internal Customers!.......2005-10-21
This book is really a page turner. I loved what was being said but also the way it was said. Phillip Van Hooser uses real and personal examples that really make the difference.
Phillip Van Hooser also mentioned the "internal customers". Internal customers are the company's employees. So often, in my opinion, companies think about ways to serve better their customers but hardly ever envision trying to serve better their employees. However, employees are critical to customer satisfaction! So Thanks Phillip for pointing out this so often forgotten fact!
Touchdown! - Give Him Six!.......2005-09-29
Phil's down to earth style and profound truth certainly scored big. If you want to gain new customers and keep existing ones, then this book has your answers. Phil's presentations are always relevant, loaded with common sense and easy to understand. His latest book is no exception! Should be required reading for all college business students. Once I began reading 'Willie's Way' I could not put it down until I read it all. Thanks Phil, for an awesome book.
Uncommon Commonsense.......2005-09-22
Phil Van Hooser is a master at unveiling uncommon commonsense. His simple, practical, easy-to-implement ideas just make sense! Anyone who wants to make a real difference in their customer service needs to follow the secrets revealed in Willie's Way.
