Helen Buttfield has observed that all her life has seemed to be a preparation for stamp making. Trained as a painter in Florence in the technique of egg tempera, a fifteenth-century medium that requires meticulous attention to detail, she remained a realist in a world of Abstract Expressionism. Taking up the camera, she traveled the world, photographing its natural glory. Four books of her photographs led her to a career in book design and an enduring passion for letterpress printing and elegant typography, one which has served her well in her stamp making. Buttfield began making stamps in 1990, inspired by the story of Tannu Tuva, a country in Asia that had completely disappeared from the map. All that remained were its stamps. Her first designs were created for the Hudson River Estuary, a nonprofit environmental organization. Then, in need of a country that would issue her stamps, she created "L'Etat de Fourire," a state of happy, delirious laughter. This fictional island nation now boasts twelve special stamp issues, which are sold as limited editions. The Fourire stamps led to commissions from the Republic of Palau in the western Pacific and the Turks and Caicos Islands of the Caribbean.

Posta Frutta is one of her newest collections of postcards. Thirty easily removable fruit collage postcards come bound in a paperback format.

Sabatini Photo Book.......1999-01-25

Agree with the 1st book reviewer...if you are a fan of Sabatini's, this is a definite must. It is all photos, covering her ups and downs on the tour for 3-4 years of her career. Very well done, I liked the fact that it was not one type of photo or just glamour shots, but rather different angles, action shots, etc. Is it worth $50.00? Yes, it is. It is a large coffee table style format. Each page is a color or black and white photo. The back has a summary of each photo with the tournament and date it was taken. If you're a tennis fan, get it, if you're a Gaby fan, get it. It is unfortunate the publishing problem arose, from what I understand, she personally had no business connection to it. I'm glad Amazon has it available for the worldwide audience. If more tennis fans knew of it, I'm sure more would order it.

Published at last but worth it?.......1999-01-12

I remembering reading about this book in Tennis Magazine several years ago (1995?). I also remember how excited I was that "Gabyfans" like me were getting something new - never before seen photos all dressed up in a fancy hardback cover. Then came all the problems with the "other" publisher. Money was taken with nothing to show for it, delay after delay and then, I thought sadly, a dead project. Surprisingly, I got my copy as a gift and was thrilled beyond belief; Gaby had since retired and this was something new. But was it worth all the hype and trouble?

In a "fans" eyes, yes. The book does contain photos never before seen and therefore brings a smile to our face. But those photos...they ARE different. The angles, and cropping are not what tennis fans are used to seeing. Some I thought were down right no better than I took at a tournament in Chicago - ones I threw away because they were so blurry or under-exposed. Yet, Mr Shima's artistic ideas simply stray from mine. The racket is cut off in one picture, everything from the waist down in another, or her face cut in half in even another. But don't get me wrong - some are downright gorgeous. The clarity, the expression on Ms. Sabatini's face, her sweat and her heart exposed for all to see. It is those photos that make the book worth buying. They do capture the persona of who Gaby was - a truly amazing beauty on the court; one so talented and graceful we will probably never see the likes of again. A full court player that caused our eyes to be glued to her every move and cheer her on whether she won or lost.

Choose this book and you'll be owning a rarity for sure. I've never found this book for sale anywhere else. And I've looked. I don't know where amazon.com gets it but at least it renews my faith it WAS published eventually. Thank you amazon.com - you are amazing!

Miller fans, this is the book you've been waiting for........2007-04-02

A must for any Frank Miller fan. See every interview ever published by the comics Journal. See him talk about his early work on Daredevil and Wolverine to reaching his mainstream peak with the dark knight to the Nexus of some of the most successful creator owned work in comic's history, Sin City and 300. miller is one of my heroes in the comic world and I love this insider look into his thoughts of comic, politics and the world we are plunged in now and how that translates to his work. Lots of no holds bared and uncensored dialog about his entire catalog of works in the past two decades.

I've owned this book for about four years now and go back and give it a read offen.

Frank Miller Speaks!.......2004-01-06

For fans of Frank Miller's work, this book is a must-purchase. Essentially a collection of interviews that he has done over the years with The Comics Journal, this book covers the man's entire career, from his early fanzine work right on up to DK2.

In typical TCJ fashion, the interviews are quite in-depth and span a wide range of topics. Miller has always been a big proponent of fighting against censorship and sounds off on the self-imposed censoring that the comic companies do on a regular basis.

Fans of his seminal works, Ronin, The Dark Knight Returns and Sin City, will be delighted to see him talk at length about each of these titles. He also goes into detail about his stint on Daredevil and his motivation for doing a Dark Knight sequel. He also touches upon everything in between -- including Martha Washington, Hard Boiled and 300. Also, Miller talks a bit about his feelings on 9/11 (he moved back to NYC when it happened) and how it informs his work.

In short, this is a fascinating book on a true artist and a genius in the comics field. In addition to the interviews there is a great collection of art from all of his major works and also rare, unpublished stuff as well. Highly recommended!

This was without reserve the best Christmas music and movie review book I have ever read. The comments were both intelligent and funny. The whole book was both well researched and entertaining. The world is a better place because of this book.

CHRISTMAS'S MOST WANTED is a reference book about Christmas customs, traditions, songs, films, evergreen trees, music, cards, foods, and a lot more.

Do you associate a certain film with Christmas? Well, this book gives detailed information in the chapter called Holiday Movie Classics. Some of the old movies mentioned are: Holiday Inn (1942), Christmas in Connecticut (1945), It's A Wonderful Life (1946), The Bishop's Wife (1947), Miracle on 34th Street (1947) and White Christmas (1954). With each film, a brief summary of the storyline is given and all of the actors are named. I have to say that was my favorite chapter.

You can also learn about the tradition of mistletoe, sending cards, singing carols, how Santa's reindeer were named and questions you never even thought to ask!

The book answers a lot of questions and I thought it was well researched, but this is primarily a secular book so don't expect many religious topics. Most of the religious references are in the chapter called Nollaig Shona which is Merry Christmas in Irish. The two references that I found to the Magi (Wise Men or Three Kings) was in a paragraph about the song, "Twelve Days of Christmas." In the song, the Twelfth Day is the Epiphany, the day that the Three Kings brought gifts for the Baby Jesus. (That's the reason that many of us leave our Christmas trees up until, January 6, which is the twelfth day of Christmas). The other reference was about a piece that was done by Dave Brubeck.

The word Christmas comes from two words put together. They are Christ's Mass.

A Must for the Holidays.......2005-12-30

Once you get this book, you may not want to have another Christmas without it.

In more than 280 pages, the authors discuss all things Christmas as they pick their "Top 10" in categories ranging from mistletoe to carols, from rangifer tarandus (reindeer) to animated cartoons. The choices are necessarily subjective, and much of the text is funny, filled with references to pop culture, music, TV and film. Pick your idea of the 10 worst Christmas songs on the radio, and see if your list compares with theirs.

The authors include scads of trivia and the inside scoop on holiday history and traditions you may never have heard of.

As you enjoy the nostalgia you'll also find useless but fascinating stuff like this: Somebody figured out that Santa has to visit 91.8 million homes in 31 hours, which means he has to make 822.6 visits per second and travel at 650 miles per second. Whew!

This would be the perfect book to have on hand for guests at Christmas, and it would make a great conversation-starter. It's fully indexed, and the bibliography includes quite a few Web sites for follow-up.

This book will definitely put you in the Christmas spirit as you learn everything you wanted to know about Christmas but are afraid to ask! I highly recommend this as a read for yourself and a stocking stuffer for others.

A nice bit of the Christmas cheer........2005-11-24

This book is a real treat. It's a lot of fun to read about all the different kinds of trivia in here. I love holiday music, and it talks about all the great ones, and some new ones I haven't heard of before! And the movies and cartoons, brings back a lot of childhood memories.

Tons of short, fun, interesting snippets of holiday information. Just perfect to pick and read for a few minutes. This book is the perfect holiday "bathroom" book, and I don't mean that in a bad way. There's something in here for everyone, and tons of short, fun, and interesting trivia about Christmas. As the other review said, you can read a chapter or two then come back to it later.

Leave it out for guests to read, too. It makes Christmas more fun!

An Absolute Oasis.......2007-09-06

I realize referring to any book as an "oasis" sounds silly, but this particular book qualifies.

I bought my first self-help book forty-eight years ago, when I was still in grade school. In college I first minored in philosophy, and then in psychology. I've read everything from classic self-help psych books to the most outrageous metaphysical self-improvement techniques. Oh, I've read and tried it all.

I discovered Tony Robbins over twenty years ago, and really liked him. He seemed practical and made sense. After going through the Personal Power tape set three times, I lost track of Tony and got involved in other techniques. Last month I stumbled across his latest -- The Edge. While waiting for the CD set to be delivered, I read this book.

It's terrific. "Notes From A Friend" is the Cliff's Notes of Tony Robbins' philosophy, and is presented with his contageous enthusiam. It's a quick read (about an hour), but is packed with good advice and humor.

Of all I've devoured over the past forty-some years, Tony Robbins' material and the Life 101 series (now out of print) are simply the best. Like wise old friends.

Inspirational.......2007-05-15

This little book is all you need to change your life. It only has a small amount of the material from his other books but it is all you really need to get started. Keep it in the bathroom so everytime you sit down you can read a chapter. It is written so that anyone can understand and apply the principles. Next to the BIBLE it is the most valued book in my household.

This is the book for the person who is interested in Anthony Robbin's work but does not feel like reading one of his bigger and more compelling books yet. You will "get you feet wet" and after that, most likely, you will want to "take a plunge" into one of his more complete and exhaustive works.
