Book Description

Therapists often encounter people who have suffered severe emotional damage resulting in feelings of psychological fragmentation. Sandplay therapy, which combines the physical actions of play with observation and understanding through the use of symbolism, can be a useful method of treating this kind of damage. This book focuses on the theoretical aspects of sandplay therapy, presenting Dora M. Kalff's ideas and drawing out the significance of Kalffian sandplay for therapists.

Building on Kalffian ideas of the integration of Eastern and Western thought in relation to healing through sandplay, the author explores theories in quantum physics and Eastern philosophies. Her theoretical insights are illustrated with clinical examples, and her book will be of great interest to arts therapists and to students of related disciplines.

5 out of 5 stars Sandplay Therapy and Sources of Symbolic Healing.......2002-05-06

Mary Jane Markell has written an important book that helps elucidate why imaginal work in healing modalities such as sandplay therapy holds such transformational power. Sandplay therapists long have needed an in depth review and elaboration of what Dora Kalff taught about the transformational process in sandplay therapy as it affects the body. Kalff believed that working imaginatively with the elements of sand and water had the possibility of engaging a person in a transformative experience at a cellular level that touched upon the deepest sources of healing. This occurs at a non-verbal, symbolic level that has analogies in the ancient mystery religions. Markell writes "The logical conclusion of this process is the self as shaman, and it is in this area that the greatest changes in Western scientific and medical thought are now occurring." Jung intuitively knew about the unconscious connection between body and psyche at what he called the "psychoid" level, and it was Kalffian sandplay that demonstrated and offered the experience of this connection. Mary Jane Markell's book offers extensive amplification of this wisdom.

Sand, Water, Silence-The Embodiment of Spirit provides a container for the author's considerable creative and intellectual energies that focus on distilling and uniting a wide array of traditions and viewpoints. These include Eastern and Western, scientific and spiritual, spatial and temporal, body and mind. She draws on and integrates ancient and modern ideas and wisdom from such diverse sources as quantum physics, Mesopotamian myths, Taoism and Buddhism, and Jungian depth psychology. She points the reader towards an integrative view that she thinks is already happening in the human collective consciousness of a transcendent state of non-duality in the reunion of the mind-body disharmony that has plagued modern man. She believes that with the conscious balancing and reconciliation of opposing traditions and perspectives into a unitive world-view a deepening understanding of the cosmos as well as a personal, individual unfolding will evolve.

Mary Jane Markell has written a book that emerged from the currents of her own individuation journey that had one beginning in her relationship to Dora Kalff and her sandplay therapy process. In the years that followed, her connection to natural and internal landscapes as well as to the world of ideas incubated. Mary Jane Markell's inspiration springs from her own internal alchemy that began in the water and earth and in the "woods and valley" of her life experiences. These provided the foundations that led to writing this book. She integrates her intuitive connections that come directly out of her with objective learning from studies and reading that she shares extensively. This is a book both to savor and enjoy.

        Book Description

Welcome to the remarkable first four issues of Simpsons Comics, brought to you by the Bongo Comics Group, a small but overachieving band of merry artists, designers, lawyers and publicists. Their work looks effortless, but the Bongo gang has shed several droplets of sweat, a few droplets of blood, and perhaps even a couple of tears of joy in the making of these comics.

Don't worry, however: All Bongo bodily secretions have been wiped off the original art so as not to distract you from your entertainment experience.

As Bart might say, "We're proud of these comics, man." As Lisa might say, "Damn, they're good."

And as Marge might say, "I don't want you sitting up in that tree house all day reading comic books! You'll ruin your eyes!"

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing To The TV Show!!.......2002-10-14

I have a dozen Simpsons comic books and they all brim with comics, mock advertisements, top ten lists, Itchy and Scratchy shorts, etc. which sport that famous television series humor. Here's what awaits you in this issue:

"Amazing Collosal Homer": Mr. Burns' lab conducts a biological experiment on Homer causing him to grow into a giant. Will Homer's love of donuts and beer--previous source of his normal girth--be the ironic key to his recovery? As Marge says, "Thank heavens for his super-stretch underwear."

"The Collector": Homer plays a wealthy loner who lives in a mansion with his prized possession--"the world's greatest library of comic books." This story is very intriguing and a little spooky. Find out why the Collector goes insane in the end.

"Cool Hand of Bart": Bart attends a "Scared Spitless" anti-deliquency program at the local prison and finds himself on a chain gang with his nemesis Sideshow Bob! What happens when Bob escapes authorities with a reluctant Bart going along for the ride? Why does Bob end up wearing an "I Love Krusty" cap? Fans of the TV show will get a kick out of seeing copies of the Springfield Review of Books in Bob's cell.

"My Sister, My Homewrecker": Selma making out with Homer!?! It has to be seen to be believed!

"The Perplexing Puzzle of the Springfield Puma": Many suspects are named when Springfield elementary's mascot turns up missing, but sometimes it's the one you least suspect. Martin Prince does his "Sopranos" imitation in this one.

"Krusty Agent of K.L.O.W.N.": Springfield's favorite clown tries out an idea for a new TV show. This short includes an interesting mating ritual between Krusty and secretary Miss. Pennycandy.

"It's in the Cards": This story could easily be a TV episode. It starts with a buzzer going off at the Nuclear Power Plant. Lenny, Carl, and Homer scream with terror--their caramel swirl cake almost melted in the microwave. Then the gang sneek off to an Isotopes game after Homer tapes a photo of himself working over Mr. Burns' surveillance camera (upside down, of course). After Homer rushes back to beat the clock, he inadvertently turns off the power to a frozen food warehouse which leads to the plot of the story: the elementary school teachers are out with food poisoning and Bart and Lisa are stuck with substitutes (Lisa's sub is a far-right conservative).

"The Gnarly Adventures of Busman": Finally, you get a sample of Otto's comic strip introduced in the television episode "Three Men and a Comic Book."

5 out of 5 stars The show is as good as this.......1999-07-18

The Simsons comics extravaganza is purfect.the best of all the books(The books i own.)My fave is"The Amazing Colossal Homer."It reflects Burns' black soul and Homers Dumness. All the other comics in this book are purfect too.

4 out of 5 stars It may not be the show but it is just as good........1998-12-30

For Simpson Comics Extravangsa(I know its wrong). it gives the first 4 episodes in the Simpson Comics. My favoriate part was the one with Robert Tewliger( Sideshow Bob). It is better to get the single comics, but the book looks nice.

5 out of 5 stars non-stop laughter and loads to read.......1998-12-07

This is one of my favourite simpsons books ever, infact I would like to give ten stars of amusement. This book contains issues that are very funny, my favourite issue is the 1st one when Homer Simpson turns into an enormous sized giant.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty, truthful, heartbreaking movie.......2001-03-22

The movie "BarFly" is based on three days on author's Charles Bukowski's life when he was 29 years old. I have seen this movie numerous times (at least 50) and still get something new out of each time. One of my buddies once said of the movie, "I felt like taking a shower after watching Barfly." Exactly!!! While some may find it too gritty, I find the movie an honest look at a troubled man's life. Henry Chinaski is like you or me but he is a raving alcoholic. There is a sweetness to him that comes out throughout the film and that is what I see and what I like to focus on. He finds his match in Wanda, also an alcoholic, and together they try and make an honest go of their reltionship. What follows is drunken mistakes and a bond that is held together by a Scotch and water. There is a purity and beauty to their relationship and it is evident that they truly care for one another but problems arise because of their drinking. To me Henry is an almost "Buddah" like character who lives in the moment and dosen't seem to hold too many regrets about his life. I admire his honesty and generosity throughout the movie. At first glance you may say he is out for himself but if you really watch old Henry you'll see flashes of kindness and sweetness. He's a man who dosen't seem to fit in to 9-5p.m. society and he makes no excuses for it, or as Jim the bartender said to Lilly the barfly, "he's as right as any of us." Keep an eye out for Bukowski himself who has a cameo in the film, a bar scene where Henry and Wanda first meet. I lived in L.A. for 10 years and have been by some of Bukowski's old haunts and the film captures the "working man's" bar scene in L.A. These types of places exist, you just have to do a little searching to find them. Henry Chinaski is a beautiful man in an ugly world. I highly recommend Barfly and suggest you view it with an open mind and an open heart. As Henry says in the last scene of the movie as he buys the bar numerous rounds of drinks, "to all my friends, to all my friends." If you would like a look at an honest, but troubled, man's life I highly suggest you check out the movie "Barfly."

5 out of 5 stars like bukowski? gotta own this.......2000-03-13

or at the very least rent it. It's great-if you like buk. if not you'll probably hate it, my girlfreind did. There's a two second shot of the man himself sitting in the bar drinking and looking all grizzled(he talks about this in HOLLYWOOD). one complaint-Frank Stalone!

                  Book Description

Compiled from transcriptions of interviews with blues artists made by Paul Oliver in 1960, Conversation with the Blues tells--in the artists' own words--of the significance of their music and the turbulent times and lives it reflects. Included are guitarists, pianists and other instrumentalists from the rural South and the urban North, from famous blues singers who recorded extensively to singers known only to their local communities. Copiously illustrated with Paul Oliver's photographs the book provides a rare glimpse--from cotton fields to the big-city--of African American music at a time when the South was still segregated. In a larger format to better display the pictures and with a new introduction by the author, this edition also contains a CD that captures the stark, ironic, but moving music and narratives of the singers themselves.

                  Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars an extensive oral history.......2005-05-28

I took a punt on a cheap 'remaindered' copy of this and, despite its quality production, photos and CD, I think only serious blues enthusiasts would find it worth the full price. It's a selection of excerpts from interviews and recordings made in 1960: an oral history of the blues. With a few notable exceptions, such as John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, the musicians are mostly unknowns (at least to me). But that's the point: to show how singing and playing the blues was part of everyday work and socializing, not a separate career.

The interviews, especially the southern ones, are lucid vignettes of pre-war life as an agricultural or industrial worker. The book travels northwards from Mississippi to Chicago following 'The Great Migration', although that phrase isn't used. In fact there's no authorial voice at all, which left me with a fragmentary and regrettably shallow understanding of the society being represented.

Nevertheless, the personal experiences make the book worthwhile as a document of the blues, or of sheer human endurance. The cover shows Blind Arvella Gray on a Chicago street. This is how he describes dealing with being shot:

"After me bein' blinded it was somethin' new to me and I were tryin' to find my place and how to manage myself. ... And every time I went around they say 'You cain't play no guitar 'cause you ain't no fingers to chord it right.' ... I play with the bottleneck on my finger from a wine bottle. ... Well, I come here to Chicago with one quarter in a tin cup and started to hustlin'."

This is good for what it does -- interpreting the body actions you and others display at the poker table. And some of the stuff is helpful. it will improve your game.

But body language is not nearly as important as other things. Like understanding which hands to play, how to put other players on hand ranges, how stack size influences play, and so on.

So you are better off reading a bunch of other books first. this might be the 6th or so book i'd recommend reading.

For the beginning player. I've used some of the information I read here and won pots I shouldn't have. That in itself pays for the cost of the book.

2 out of 5 stars Basic Poker Information.......2007-05-09

If you are new to poker then this book might be worth the money. Frankly, anyone who has watched TV Poker for more than a year has probably picked up most of this stuff from the commentators. Today everyone is an expert, and lots of the stuff they spout is from Caro's book. So newbies will find it useful, but anyone who has played awhile or watched much TV poker might not get much out of it.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Goldmine!!!.......2003-05-20

Caro's Book of Tells is essential to cracking a tough game.

Mike Caro gives the reader an excellent insight into the psychology of poker and explains the meaning of opponents' actions and verbals. He unlocks the secrets to reading opponents perfectly and helps the reader understand how to remain "tell-less" when he/she is the one in the hot-seat.

If you sit in an easy game, this book will transform you from being a consciencious winner to being a consistantly massive winner. This is no exaggeration!
Also, if you sit in a tough game, Caro will give you a huge edge over those who haven't read the Book of Tells, and hence your profits will soar.

[...] Anyone who reads the Book of Tells will earn back the cost price in their first hour at the tables after reading it: I certainly did.

Caro's Book of Tells is essential reading for anyone attempting to achieve poker supremacy.
It is a literary Goldmine that no player should be without.

                  2 out of 5 stars way overrated.......2002-11-28

This is a classic of poker literature, it's true, but I think it's overrated and ranks way down the list of essentials. There are at least 20 other poker books I would recommend before it. The problem is that applying the book's concepts is really a very nebulous business.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book on the psychology of poker........1998-10-08

This book is bound to improve your game in at least two ways. First, other players will begin revealing their hands to you -- and you won't even have to pay to see them. Second, it will cause you to reevaluate your own actions (tells). Many players try to "tell" their opponents disinformation. However, Caro (and his readers) see right through this "first grade psychology", and find the real meaning in tells. Knowing what they look for is the first step in the process of getting rid of your own tells.

4 out of 5 stars A good addition but take with a grain of salt.......1998-08-01

This is a clever book that tends to take itself a bit too seriously. The pictures are great and there is a large bit of insight to be gained from this book. The best book for increasing your poker winnings? NO. Worth buying? Yes.

3 out of 5 stars Book "Walk Awhile In My Shoes".......2007-08-24

The book is a great business perspective from managers to direct reports and vice versa. Books were purchased for my Sales Reps.

The shipping was less than desireable. The box was saturated (delivered by USPS)and one of the 9 books was water damaged. This could have been avoided if the books were wrapped in plastic. I would have pursued a replacement but I did not know who to contact at Amazon.com.

3 out of 5 stars Helps foster understanding between employees & management........1999-01-05

The goal of this book and its companion 2-volume videotape is to encourage communication between employees and management. Read one way, the book addresses managers; turn it upside down, and it presents the employee's point of view. This clever format helps to illustrate the main point of the short volume: that employees and managers have a lot of common ground if they make the effort to improve their understanding and empathy of one another by seeing the other's point of view. The book raises important issues that occur between the two organizational groups, in a manner that is thought provoking, not finger-pointing. Prepared as a training manual, it may be most effective when used with groups interested in reducing polarization between management and employees.
