Book Description
"Eduardo Kac's work represents a turning point. What it questions is our current attitudes to creativity, taking that word in its most fundamental sense."
-Edward Lucie-Smith, author of Visual Arts in the 20th Century
"His works introduce a vital new meaning into what had been known as the creative process while at the same time investing the notion of the artist-inventor with an original social and ethical responsibility."
-Frank Popper, author of Origins and Development of Kinetic Art
"Kac's radical approach to the creation and presentation of the body as a wet host for artificial memory and 'site-specific' work raises a variety of important questions that range from the status of memory in digital culture to the ethical dilemmas we are facing in the age of bioengineering and tracking technology."
-Christiane Paul, Whitney Museum of Art
For nearly two decades Eduardo Kac has been at the cutting edge of media art, first inventing early online artworks for the web and continuously developing new art forms that involve telecommunications and robotics as a new platform for art. Interest in telepresence, also known as telerobotics, exploded in the 1990s, and remains an important development in media art. Since that time, Kac has increasingly moved into the fields of biology and biotechnology.
Telepresence and Bio Art is the first book to document the evolution of bio art and the aesthetic development of Kac, the creator of the "artist's gene" as well as the controversial glow-in-the-dark, genetically engineered rabbit Alba. Kac covers a broad range of topics within media art, including telecommunications media, interactive systems and the Internet, telematics and robotics, and the contact between electronic art and biotechnology. Addressing emerging and complex topics, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary art.

Book Description
Experimental futurist decor: Highlights from Decorative Art, The Studio Yearbook...
TASCHEN's Decorative Arts series, whose six installments span the 20th century up through the 1970s, carefully reproduces the best of Decorative Art, The Studio Yearbook. Published annually from 1906 until 1980, the yearbook was dedicated to the latest currents in architecture, interiors, furniture, lighting, glassware, textiles, metalware, and ceramics. Since the publications went out of print, the now hard-to-find yearbooks have become highly prized by collectors and dealers. Preserving the yearbooks' original page layouts, TASCHEN's Decorative Arts books bring you the authentic experience of each decade's design trends and styles.
This volume spotlights the futuristic, experimental aesthetic of the 1970s. After the revolutions of the '60s, the world of design and architecture became an increasingly exciting and fast-moving hotbed of ideas, rife with vehemently opposing schools and movements. In many ways it was a more extreme era for design than the previous decade. Experimentalism was everywhere, and many projects, thought not practical, were forward-thinking visions of a new kind of decorative art and design. Various groups advocated returning to natural methods, rejecting style in favor of craft or pushing the logic of industrial living to its concrete, high-rise extreme. Decorative Arts 1970s includes the work of the decade's brightest stars, such as Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Luigi Coltani, Ettore Sottsass, Achille Castiglioni, Kisho Kurokawa, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, and Theo Crosby.
Customer Reviews:
"Decorative Art Yearbooks" Revisited.......2000-06-07
Decorative Arts 1970's is a presentation of "[t]he fascinating history of design traced by [the] Deorative Art Yearbook (Yearbook)...printed in a somewhat revised form." Divided into 8 sections: Architecture and Interiors; Furniture; Textiles and Wallpapers; Glass; Lighting; Silver and Tableware; and Ceramics, this book offers a plethora of color and b&w images, along with somewhat limited text, which is written in English, French and German.
The book is dominated by the Architecture section, which is filled with mostly b&w (some color) photos, floorplans and useful information about the structure, the architect and the interior design. The remaining sections, all much smaller, offer examples of the pieces, their designers, measurments, materials, distributors and countries of origin. The overall layouts of these sections, while pleasing to eye, are presented in a very confuseing manner. The description of each item is numbered, but instead of numbering each photo, a "key" is offered (in a different spot on each page), which maps out the number of each photo. Furthermore, the book goes for pages at a time without page-numbers, rendering the index difficult to use.
Overall, the book presents many interesting pieces of 70's design and includes works by all the usual suspects, along with some unusual ones. I would have liked to have seen sections devoted to plastics (some of which can be found in the furniture section) and electronics (completely missing in action), but overall I am not complaining. If you are a fan of books such as "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" and "L'utopie du Tout Plastique" you are likely to enjoy this one as well!

Book Description
When the Doctor and Mel receive a message about the Lamprey, the Doctor is confused. He's never heard of such a thing. Mel on the other hand has, which is odd as the Lamprey is a demon from a distant planet, far, far in the future - somewhere she's never heard of, let alone visited. Meanwhile two strangers are watching every move the Doctor makes, one minute stopping calamity, the next causing it. Are they the force for good that they claim? Just as Mel thinks she's got this time-travelling business sorted out once and for all, along comes the peculiar Pierrot family to challenge everything she believes to be real...
Customer Reviews:
A Well Needed Story.......2006-08-13
As the cliché says, this is a story that needed to be told. I do admit that I liked the Missing Adventures of the 6th Doc, but I always felt they had something lacking. Maybe it was the NA/MAs desire to show an evolution into the Valeyard by the 6th Doctor, thus the birth of the 7th Doctor being "Time's Champion." That's not to say I didn't like those novels, I really did, but sometimes I felt they were giving Colin's Doctor a bad name...so to speak. I guess that I am one of the few people out there who really did like Colin's tenure as the Doctor and wished that there had been more. Still I was glad for the 6th Doc's MAs and I have been having a blast with the BBC's line of Past Doctor's 6th Doc adventures. Thus, getting to this review, I am well pleased with this "final book" for the 6th Doctor. The story is slow at first because you really do not understand what is going on, but, as time moves on, you get deeper into the horrors and mystery of a dying multiverse. Why is it dying? What are the effects of the dying universes? You'll have to find out for yourself. Still. This adventure kind of reminds me of the hard to find So Vile A Sin. At least the ending with all the different 6th Docs and Mels coming together to fight the bad guys. GR is able to catch the quirkiness, the violence, the haughtiness, and the grace of Colin's Doctor. The story is intriguing and well worth an almost epic pitch to it...I wonder how a Big Finish would work this one. That would be interesting. Still, if you desire a closure for the 6th Doctor this is as good as any. I am sure you'll like it.
Painful.......2006-03-01
This is a rather tedious exercise which only serves one purpose to allow Russell to write the regeneration story. And even then he contradicts everything we've been told right back to the New Adventures about this event. There are a couple of nice set pieces and some interesting things to say about continuity and the rehabilitation of Colin Baker's portrayal. But in the end it's a rather boring book.
A Sixth Doctor Treasure..............................2006-02-13
This book not only gives us the story (finally, thanks to Mr. Russell) of how the Sixth Doctor regenerated into the Seventh, but crafts some nice "alternate" universe continuity into the Sixth Doctor's all too brief era. This encompasses the Sixth Doctor's television and audio adventures (via Big Finish, also highly recommended), and weaves a classic story dealing with of course, time travel, and also a truly "heroic" Sixth Doctor bow. The character of Mel (all three of her!) also gets proper treatment here, which is long overdue. Literary Who its best!

Book Description
'Necessity is the mother of invention,' they say, and it's the truth. At once a delightfully irreverent how-to and a celebration of rural America, Cracker Ingenuity is about the great everyday in-ventions of people who've been broke for a long time and will be broke for at least that long again. Crammed with sidebars, photos, and illustrations, Cracker Ingenuity provides step-by-step instructions for everything one needs to have the most luxurious trailer in the park, including: -Techniques for distilling bathtub whisky -Awesome mods for hot rods -How to make a swamp cooler -Tips for turning a tiny trailer into a double-wide -Jerry-rigging electricity, stealing cable: what works, what doesn't. All it takes is a few ingredients salvaged from around the home. It may not be glamorous, but it works, and that's the important thing. But even better, Cracker Ingenuity reveals how anyone can have a good time without spending a dime.
Customer Reviews:
Funny, approaching satire, not very original.......2005-11-30
Another reviewer notice that some of the material bears an erie similarity to several Web sites on the topic. Without leveling a charge of direct copying one way or the other there is some VERY similar writing online. (Students, Authors and Publishers take note: Google knows everything...)
While I realize that this book is a sometimes sucessful attempt at satire it also has several gross fabrications made up so that they could be satirized or simply add to the page count. Com'on reality is so much richer than fiction and much funnier to satirize. YAWN.
Escape from the Everyday.......2003-05-20
Cracker Ingenuity provides an incredible escape from the Sex in the City everyday of $500 handbags and $12 cosmos. P.T. Elliott and E.M. Lowry remind us that we need not cry "super" every time our shower drains slowly, that in fact human ingenuity not only exists but would enrich our lives were we to exercise it instead of suppressing it in the money for labor market of the post-industrial city. As a return of the repressed, the authors demonstrate that there is something to be said for a house that rolls and for decorative lawn ornaments. Yes, in many places (like where I grew up) a person would be arrested for lawn ornaments, but that is exactly what the authors provide is a possible alternative everyday for the programmed life of pedicured French bulldogs and cars parked neatly in garages. P.T. Elliott follows up her 100 Proof with another humorous, enlightening winner.
a delight!.......2003-05-15
Not only is this a delightful and informative read, but it is also beautifully designed. Trailer Park ingenuity is often merely dismissed or laughed off, but this charming book presents the reader with the wisdom and ideas that have been developed over the years by a very resourceful segment of our society. There is much to be learned from them!
Superb.......2003-05-12
This is the cooki-est and most hilarious book I have read in years. what an eye-opener and a great surprise on trailer trash culture. this book takes on a fantastic journey in a culture that most of us europeans know so little about or have so much disdain for.
Highly recommended.

Book Description
Film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays are increasingly popular and now figure prominently in the study of his work and its reception. This Companion is a lively collection of critical and historical essays on the films adapted from, and inspired by, Shakespeare’s plays. Chapters have been revised and updated from the first edition to include the most recent films and scholarship. An international team of leading scholars discuss Shakespearean films from a variety of perspectives: as works of art in their own right; as products of the international movie industry; and as the work of particular directors from Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles to Franco Zeffirelli and Kenneth Branagh. They also consider specific issues such as the portrayal of Shakespeare’s women and the supernatural. The emphasis is on feature films for cinema, rather than television, with strong coverage of Hamlet, Richard III, Macbeth, King Lear and Romeo and Juliet.
Customer Reviews:
Lightweight introduction to Shakespeare on Film.......2001-03-02
If you don't know anything much at all about Shakespeare and film and if you like criticism that is almost pure description with little argument or analysis to weight you down, then you'll probably like this book. For scholars in the field, however, the book will be a major disappointment.

Like many savvy business people of the 21st century, David Bach offered his first pearls of financial wisdom to women, in his bestselling book Smart Women Finish Rich. Recognizing that these women are often accompanied by significant others and that money arguments are the number one cause of divorce in America, Bach has now broadened his scope. Presumably intended to help change this depressing statistic, Smart Couples Finish Rich is a well-written financial planning tool, packed with useful charts and information, inspiring examples, and practical advice.
For people who've been disappointed by the shallowness of some of the "quick tips" self-help books out there, the subtitle of this book is a little misleading. Bach's nine steps are not instant change techniques or chirpy little quips to recite to yourself whenever you go to balance your checkbook. Instead, the first few steps include a series of exercises that will help you determine what you know (and don't know, or understand) about saving and investing, what role money should play in your life (which includes understanding your values), and how to work together toward a common financial goal. From there, Bach teaches his readers how to account for "disappearing" money, how to build retirement, security, and dream baskets of wealth (providing detailed options for all three), and how to avoid the most common financial mistakes most couples make. Though the focus of the book is predominantly on working with your existing income, Bach includes a final chapter entitled "Increase Your Income by 10 Percent in Nine Weeks."
Bach's writing style is engaging and his advice is user-friendly. A successful financial planner, he obviously believes passionately in all the "fringe" benefits of being financially responsible but employs a no-nonsense approach that makes financial smarts available to everyone. So whether you're 25 and just starting out on the earning, saving, and spending road or you plan to retire next year; whether you've recently got hitched for the first time or you've just entered your fourth marriage; and whether financial planning comes first or last on your list of fun things to do, the advice in Smart Couples Finish Rich is worth heeding. It's not about becoming a money-obsessed bore, it's about getting smart... and rich. --S. Ketchum

Helpful for all couples planning a future.......2007-09-04
Much of this information can be found elsewhere. I like his idea of dividing savings into the retirement, security, and dream 'baskets'. Many people do not understand that there are different types of savings and that they are all needed to live a happy and healthy life. He even gives advice on the types of investments for each 'basket'. Most of his advice is invaluable and the book is well worth it.

If found this book very helpfulas a new married couple. It is an easy read without all the financial jargon and is something you can read and actually put into use. Great resource!
Time Waits For No One..............2007-07-12
I originally purchased this book for my son and his wife, but after a month went by and I discovered that it was still laying near the computer where he left it, I picked it up and read it in one day. The information contained is concise, relevant, on-time and indispensable for any couple at any stage of their relationship, hey, as indicated by a scenario by the author, it might even save their relationship. My son and his wife are young, she budgets and is a spend-thrift but he is Houdini with his money, it just diappears: he can never account for his spending and he has not disciplined himself to save. I take the blame for this lack of discipline because I did not always actively encourage him to save his money. The book even addresses this issue, advising parents how to actively involve their children in financial matters. I wholeheartedly agree with David that financial issues should be taught in school. There should be a curriculum designed to address this deficiency in the American educational system. I just wish that I had had this book when I was married. It would have given me a head start, a tremendous guideline, a map, a light in the tunnel to the financial issues that have confronted me over the years. Young couples, married or not married, sit down and read this, it's practical and it is doable and you will not regret it, believe me...time waits for no one.
get control of your finances.........2007-06-27
This is the book which helped me priortize and organize my financial records and life. The information is organized into 3 baskets(retirement, security & dream) based on their priority. It has helped me immensely to
have discipline and control in my financial life. I followed the steps, plan to maximize my retirement contibution this year, now have a security fund, bought life & disability insurance to secure my family and organized my financial records using inventory planner.
Informative.......2007-06-10
I read this book aloud with my husband and we discussed it all along the way. It brings some common-sense ideals together in a well-explained, organized fashion and sells them well. We've all heard "pay yourself first," but this book explains how best to achieve that adage in today's financial environment.
The book is not just about cutting out gourmet coffee-- in fact it doesn't suggest that at all. The author illustrates how people typically fail to prioritize their savings by showing how easily they would spend $3 a day on a latte, but say they cannot afford to put away more money in their 401(k).
The author's idea of "baskets" gives couples a game plan for their retirement, security and recreation. The worksheets provided in the book are helpful by helping couples articulate their dreams and goals both individually and jointly. Couples may also be surprised when they sit down to analyze their current financial picture during one exercise in this book!
If you are ready for advice on a financial game plan, then this is a great book for you and your significant other. (See Bach's other books if the "couple" factor does not apply or appeal to you but you want to understand his philosophies.)
