Yu Watase, Fushigi Yugi: Lover (Viz Publications, 1993)
Fushigi Yugi has been getting darker and more complex with each episode; it's turrned into an epic fantasy under our very noses, and without us even noticing. Go figure.
Miaka and co., thwarted from summoning Suzaku, are now trying to get to the Shentso-Pao, an artifact of unknown type that will allow them a kind of backdoor to summoning Suzaku. Unfortunately, it'll also work for summoning Seiryu, so Yui and the Seiryu celestial warriors are after it as well, and they have a plan...
Somewhere along the way, this story-- previously a fun, kind of cute, little diversion-- got gripping. While it still handles things in a predictable kind of way for anyone who's ever heard a description of one of the old serial movies, it resists being episodic somehow. I'm still trying to figure out how Watase pulls that off. If you're already a manga fan, this is definitely a series worth picking up; if you're new to the world of manga, Fushigi Yugi would be an excellent starting point. What are you waiting for? *** ý
Great volume.......2005-06-17
This is volume nine of Fushigi Yuugi. This is a wonderful volume. Miaka and Tamahome are a great couple and have a wonderful love story. Miaka and Tamahome search with everyone for an item that will help them. Miaka must pass many tests before she can receive that item, but when things change, Miaka must make a decision that will change her life. When a very important even occurs, Tamahome rescues Miaka and takes her with him. Miaka explains what happened to Tamahome. Miaka asks him if they can still get married. Tamahome is very sweet and romantic. Tamahome hugs Miaka and takes her in his arms and comforts her. He tells her he will make her the happiest bride in the world. Tamahome hugs her and they kiss. Tamahome is very caring and loving in this volume. He is Miaka's true love and boyfriend and they have lots of touching moments in this volume. This is a great volume.
Stressing.......2004-07-11
After you finish this book, you will probably have mixed feelings. Mine were confused, stressed, and I thought the book made me freak out! All I gotta say is that this book is pretty good. It's not as good as the others, but the story is growing more and more. That's why people love these books, but anyways, I still recommend this book, because you have to read it before you read any other ones.
I"M IN LOVE! with a book!.......2004-04-07
I love the fushigi yugi series sooooo much! This one is one of my favorites of the series and IT"S JUST GREAT! but why'd nuriko have to go and die? and just as she/he/it was about to start being a man again?!?! ITS NOT FAIR!(...) but anyway i love the WHOLE series so you HAVE to read it!
Good..But Bad...........2004-03-14
I just love the series Fushigi Yugi,I really do! To confess,I didn't even think of reading this series,it was my mom! yes,my mom who's 35 thank you very much,(hey,I'm only 11,okay, sue me!)I love All the characters but my really favorite that I ranked as a 15 out of 10 were Miaka,Tamahome,Chichri, and Nuriko.I really liked Nuriko (don't get any ideas!)until she/he died, but even though Nuriko was a man I thought of her as a woman and sort of half sister of Miaka and I thought to myself,"why did she half to die?! why, why, why?! and I cried and cried in my room. But not to be mean but I'm not happy with the way the ending turned out in this book. And you would to if you've read all the books I've read.(10 times each book)and I don't know why Ms.Wastase likes Nakago.(my mom called him Namatamago "raw egg" in Japanese this morning.)ha ha.I ABSOLUTLEY HATE HIM!!!HE'S SOOO HORRIBLE!!!!IF YOU SAW WHAT HE DID TO MIAKA AND I DON'T LIKE YUI EITHER..er....wait if you read this....without reading the book....AHHHHHHH!!!I'DOING IT AGAIN!!!I'M SPOILING THE FUN OUT OF READING THIS BOOK!!!I'M SO STUPID!!!!Sorry,I get carried away with stuff like that. But please try to undrstand what I feel.Fushigi Yugi is the most wonderful series EVER.PERIOD.And if that won't convince you this might:Fushigi Yugi is the most funny, tearful, wonderful, ect, and please take it from a complete manga "comic book in Japanese"reading maniac.I've read and tried 11 different manga series's but this overall is the best.

Hilarious--and surprisingly helpful!.......2005-03-17
This intentionally self-deprecating book is not only hilarious, it also makes you realize just how ridiculous you're being if you're just having "one of those days" when you're feeling sorry for yourself. Surprisingly, seeing those self-pity thoughts in writing actually helps dissolve them!
Great glance at for a moment book for 12 step program people.......1998-12-10
When you have self-pity, this book is a good place to start. It puts life in proper perpective as compared to how we can mistakenly take things too personally. Nice book to share with others who understand the humor involved!

Clarissa, a young beauty trapped in the Victorian equivalent of the impassioned Story of O, was trained from an early age at her father's knee--and then at her husband's hand--to endure all the discipline that men would administer to her. But when still others come to take charge, Clarissa vows to turn her power to please into an electrifying weapon.

The sex never stops!.......2002-02-23
Incest, sexual bondage, group sex, bottom sex, everything. Why don't sex therapists recommend these kind of books, or do they? Anyone who doesn't get turned on by this book ... well, they'd better give up.
A MUST HAVE for your erotic library .........2000-10-10
Not going to spend much time on this excellent book that delves into eroticism at its best in Victorian England. Clarissa learn how to use her body at the hands of her father and is a traded commodity to her husband Nigel .. who I might add teaches Clarissas mother a trick or three ....
As with most if not ALL of my MUST have reviews it's out of print again .....
186 pages of great sex and no S&M to deal with .... Its really one of the fe of the Blue Moon seriers that I reccomend ...
My favorite forbidden novel.......2000-03-18
Blue Velvet is one of my favorite Victorian erotica novels. I rank it with the likes of Elinor, Blue Tango and Elaine. I have read it many times for its stark, understated sexuality. The content includes variations of hetersexuality and unadorned S/M. Blue Velvet is well written adult erotica with excellent character development.
An obedient daughter and wife turns tables on those in power.......1999-08-29
Tired of reading erotica from the male point of view? Follow the inner-musings of young Clarissa as she is "given" to her father's commanding officer. Her sexual education is expanded when she becomes the spoils of her husband's gambling debts. The Victorian settings and characters found in Blue Velvet are worthy of a Masterpiece mini-series.....if only they would dare to film it.

Book Description
Blue Velvet is perhaps avid Lynch's best film to date, and certainly his most well known. Beneath its tranquil, beautifully filmed, small-town ambience, lies violence and depravity on a hideous scale, with Dennis Hopper, as Frank, at its core. This book covers every aspect of the movie: how it was made, the screenplay, the casting, the director, its themes. Passionate, witty, and provocative, the book goes far beyond the usual A-Z.
Customer Reviews:
NOW IT'S DARK.......2001-08-20
It's good to see that Bloomsbury stepped off the beaten (mainstream) path with this, their third, movie guide. It's about time that this cult favorite got it's due. The encyclopedic nature of this book, while offputting to some, makes it easier to look up specific topics. While mainly about Blue Velvet, the book manages to wander off the subject just long enough to help weave the movie into the David Lynch Universe. For those of you that can't get enough, check out Michael Atkinson's Blue Velvet (BFI). Now it's dark.
An excellent appreciation of David Lynch's masterpiece.......2000-12-14
If you value a literate and intelligent appreciation of a complex film, then this book is for you. It has helped me to understand and enjoy (if this word can be used of such a profoundly disturbing film) 'Blue Velvet' without dispelling any of its poetry. It recognizes that there are no final answers to all the mysteries of this extraordinary film. It avoids jargon, and is accessible to the general reader as well as the movie buff. It doesn't cover `every aspect of the movie' as the book description claims, but this seems to me to be a strength. It avoids a lot of the frankly tedious behind-the-scenes production details in favour of a more personal response. So if you really want to know what the budget was or what sort of lenses Frederick Elmes used in Dorothy's bedroom, then this book probably isn't for you. Indeed, if it has a weakness, it's when it does attempt to give the sort of `all you need to know' movie trivia that the AZ format calls for. But this is a small quibble.
Don't waste your money!.......2000-10-27
This pathetic book is organized as though it's geared for morons - "from A to Z", with absurd topics like 'people like Frank' and 'chipped tooth'. There's even a chapter called 'Pabst Blue Ribbon' in which the author merely tells about how he couldn't find this brand of beer in his local store. Why put this in a book? Also, the chapter concerning Laura Dern, who had a major role in this movie, is only 2 pages and makes the amazing declaration that her mother is Cheryl Ladd! (it's Diane Ladd.) That shows you how much research was put into this book - none. The author is just a guy who is a fan of the movie, did very little research and interviewed no one about it, and spews his pedestrian opinions willy-nilly. For instance, Frank Booth was meant to represent a purely evil, subhuman, subterranean insect in this movie, yet the author goes on about his "pathos" and endearing qualities. And maybe you want to buy this book because there'll be some interviews with the stars, director, or ANYONE? Forget it - all you get are the author's takes on the film, period. He does quote Hopper and Lynch, but only one-liners. Don't waste your time on this mess, or the other book in this series about Goldfinger, either. They're not serious analyzations of the movies - only the uninformed opinions of British fans who got lucky enough to have their books published. The book is intended only for those maniacal fans who'll buy ANYTHING related to the movie. The few pictures are merely stock stills from the movie...no behind the scenes stuff. I wasted my money on this, so please heed my advice and forget this book exists. For a MUCH better, far more intelligent analysis of "Blue Velvet", get Danny Peary's book "Cult Movies" (it's in either vol. 2 or 3).
Everything and more!.......2000-04-22
Drazin's book is an excellent guide to one of David Lynch's greatest films. It contains a breakdown of every aspect of the film and more. It is an excellent way for people to delve deeper into the film and find out Lynch's subtle meanings of style. The only thing lacking from this book is the screenplay. If that is what you are looking for then you'll have to look elsewhere.

Book Description
For many, Blue Velvet is David Lynch's masterpiece. It crystallises many of his chief preoccupations: the evil and violence underlying the surface of suburbia, the seedy by-ways of sexuality, the frightening appearance of the adult world to a child's eyes. In this intricate and layered reading of the film, Michael Atkinson analyses Blue Velvet as the definitive expression of the traumatized innocence which characterizes Lynch's work.
Customer Reviews:
Suggestive study of an endlessly fascinating masterwork........2002-01-09
In the decade and a half between his pioneering 'Blue Velvet' and recent renaissance with 'Mulholland Drive', David Lynch's reputation had seriously plummeted, his name a synonym for kitschy, affectless weirdness. It's good to be reminded what a major filmmaker he could be, and Michael Atkinson claims 'Velvet' as the most important and influential film of the 80s. Although the film deals with areas of human behaviour, psychology and sexuality we'd prefer not to think about, and is full of reeling violence and disorienting cinematic procedures, Atkinson argues that Lynch is ultimately a conservative artist, affirming a childlike, pre-Oedipal innocence by vividly portraying its dark, disjunctive opposite.
This thesis is arguable to say the least, and Atkinson himself isn't always very convinced by it. Using a loose psychoanalytic framework, he discusses 'Velvet' as a psychodrama, a narrative unleashing of the Id, with Jeffrey as a kind of Alice or fairy-tale figure undergoing the harrowing, identity-threatening psychic journey to maturity. You may disagree with Atkinson's wider conclusions, but his attentive, close reading of the film pays justice to its full, ambiguous complexity, singling out Lynch's idiosyncratic use of colour, composition and the widescreen frame; his manipulation of physical space in psychic space; the equal importance of his 'aural design' to his visuals; his unexpected sensitivity to class and gender politics; his use of performance (Atkinson brilliantly recuperates the famously vicious Frank (Dennis Hopper)). Each passing insight adds layers to the film's suggestibility, without ever hoping to tie it up, so bound up is Lynch's aesthetic to his own impenetrable demons.
Atkinson has an annoying habit of repeating alienating buzzwords like 'interface' and 'topoi', where clearer words will do; his contention that 'Velvet' is a 'pure' movie, untainted by cinema history, is simply wrong (Douglas Sirk and Hitchcock's 'Vertigo' are obvious precedents for a start), and his interpretation of Lynch's Dennis Potter-like use of song is way off the mark. But if you want to tease out some of the stranger mysteries of Lynch's beautiful and enigmatic film, this is the book to get.
Lynches Classic Under the Microscope.......1999-12-05
Assuming you have seen the movie, one might be fascinated to read a book on it. Atkinsons book might be the one to check out. Carefully detailed, this book discusses the major plots in the film, in relation to all its subplots as well as all the inuendoes that are so common in Lynch films. Not to mention the quirkiness of the characters. Overall, this book was well told and making some plausible ideas about the strangeness of Lynches world. Yet, I found it does not help me appreciate the film any better than I did the first time, or the next time I will see it.
It's A Strange World.......1999-06-27
Michael Atkinson does a great job of analyzing and pointing out all the weird little touches that "Blue Velvet" contains. It is helpful to fans and is sure to tell you something about the film, even if you were sure you knew everything about it. Atkinson does get a little long-winded in some places but it is otherwise a good book for anyone interested in this film.
Atkinson's "Blue Velvet" study a must for Lynch fanatics.......1998-03-23
Film writer Michael Atkinson delivers an exceptional short reading of one of the most influential and compelling films of the 1980s. Working with the efficiency of a Johns Hopkins-trained neurosurgeon, the author's recent addition to the BFI Modern Film Classics series irrefutably cements "Blue Velvet's" position in the canon and would undoubtedly turn the stomach of professed Lynch-hater Roger Ebert.
Customer Reviews:
Quick, but memorable, read.......2003-05-29
I had this book as a girl and remembered the gist of it without remembering the title. I used Booksleuth to post a description and someone solved it for me. After I ordered the book from Amazon, I read it quickly, but enjoyed it a lot - as much as I had when I was young. Very nice story, and very little 'dating' of the time period.

Customer Reviews:
goes somewhat beyond introductory Excel.......2007-03-18
The book has some merit to a reader new to Excel, and who wants something a bit more indepth than the Idiots or Dummy's books on Excel. Proctor gives examples that do more with the spreadsheets, and you get to appreciate what Excel can provide.
But, as other reviewers have cogently pointed out, the book really is not for business professionals, despite what the title says. An accountant or businessperson should already have more background on financial modelling with spreadsheets that the level provided here.
WAY too Basic for Most.......2007-03-14
This work lacks substance for anyone remotely likely to have to do any real financial analysis. The examples are too simplistic to be of much practical value. If you have virtually no training or experience in Excel or accounting or finance then this book might be worth borrowing from a library to get you up to speed. If you have more than a week of experience in this area then it will sit on the shelf.
Hardly a Guide for any Professional in Finance.......2006-09-27
Chances are that if you are even thinking about financial modeling you have at least a basic understanding of excel and accounting. If that is the case, this book will prove to be almost completely useless. The modeling examples used within the book are so simplistic that if you have had half a semester in an accounting class you will have a more indepth understanding than what the book provides. Financial valuation is almost non existant as is sensitivity analysis, with each getting a short token chapter. The use of excel is at such a beginner level that I feel as if I did more indepth work with excel attempting to figure out my student loan payments. I have read the book from front to back and feel as if it has provided me with no useful manner in which to conduct any sort of modeling other than in an imaginary world where companies only sell one product, have almost no expenses, collect all their recievables within the next pay period and other such ludicrious assumptions. In addition there are several errors in the examples provided in the book. These made me chuckle since anyone who could catch them would not need the book and anyone who actually needs the book for its rudimentary "guidance" would be left bewildered and confused as to why they got the answers wrong.
