5 out of 5 stars Overview of all things animated.......2007-04-23

This was a required text for my Animation 101 course. I knew nothing about animation, but I do now! This book is great for beginners as it starts with the history of animation from cave drawings to the first animated short and moves to cel animation before ending at computer animation. It thoroughly goes through all the different types of animation; cel, stop motion, go motion, cut out, claymation, computer, etc. It's also nice because it shows the benefits of storyboards and having the right equipment for doing certains types of animation.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.......2007-01-10

I am new to animation and this was only the 4th book I bought. At last I have bought a book that is not collecting dust on the bookcase. I have read this book cover to cover and know now why I was interested in the subject. Why would I want to go and do one of those numerous 'courses' that various institutions offer. This was far more enjoyable and may I take this opportunity to thank Chris Patmore, the Author. Because each page was so interesting it did not feel like I was learning. Second time around I read the book in front of PC and tried out each chapter - everything worked like a dream.

2 out of 5 stars Glossy and Forgettable.......2006-11-09

Lots of colorful pictures but little substance. The author writes from a technological standpoint but also seems to consider himself an expert on animation. He's not, and his authoritative misinformation is often laughable. I'd quote a couple points, but I can't be bothered to pick the thing up again. Try "Fundamentals of Animation" by Paul Wells, and of course the Richard Williams book.

4 out of 5 stars A nice little book.......2006-11-04

I recommend this book if you want an overview of the animation craft. It is well illustrated, and the information is accurate. The scope of what it covers makes it impossible for the authors to go into great detail about each and every aspect of the business, but the book is full of valuable information.

It is not a waste of time or money.

5 out of 5 stars Want a good start in your animaton career? Here's one........2006-03-01

A very good book that cover the basics for animation. It surely will make the younger ones want to start right away, and if you're a little bit older it will be a useful guide to start animation as a hobby or take a first look at it as a career. Chapters cover all aspect from essential equipment, how to write a good story, develop interesting characters and how to make all this come to life! (no mater you like cell animation, 3d, or web based) Did I mention there's plenty of images and tips? This book is up to date and if you want to go further in this art the book gives plenty of "Do it yourself" activities and includes a vast bibliografy depending on the subject. Give at try you'll like it.

      Book Description

Everybody loves cartoons, but not everybody realizes that a good cartoonist needs special training. This attractive, heavily illustrated, easy-to-follow volume is a self-teaching course for beginning cartoonists. At the heart of the book is instruction on drawing faces and figures that come to life--facial expressions that cover the full range of emotions, gestures that dramatize body language, clothing that indicates social and professional status, face and body shapes that indicate age, and much more. Cats, dogs, and other animals are shown too, with tips on making them appear either comically human-like or naturalistic. Aspiring cartoonists are introduced to the equipment and materials they'll need for both color and black-and-white cartooning, and are provided with research and reference sources, including many on the World Wide Web. The author also presents background information on cartooning art, and discusses the trends in comic strip art, advertising art, and political cartooning. In addition to instruction, budding artists will find advice on getting their work into print and information on career opportunities. More than 300 lively, colorful, and instructive illustrations.

                    Book Description

A whimsical array of ghosts and goblins, spooks and skeletons, vamps and vampires parade through this unparalleled collection of more than 100 years of American Halloween attire. From Little Bo Peep with lamb in hand to beatniks and pirates, from monsters and witches to clowns and animals, this veritable "carnival" of costumes visually captures All Hallows' Eve like no other book before.

In her celebration of Halloween revelry, photographer Phyllis Galembo never settles for the ordinary; here instead are evocative scenes of dressed-to-scare young trick-or-treaters "modeling" their disguises, of undead spirits haunting their surroundings, and of costumes spanning over a century that take on an eerie new creepiness thanks to special lighting effects. Accompanying the costume shots is a history of this always-popular holiday and an essay placing the work in the wider context of fashion and costume. Of interest to enthusiasts, designers, and students alike, this devilishly diverting book is the perfect gift for all Halloween aficionados.

John Ney Rieber, The Books of Magic: Death After Death (Vertigo, 2001)

Rieber's conclusion to the Books of Magic series seems to be widely considered the weakest work therein; odd, because it turned out to be my favorite of its seven collections. It started out with much the same problem that constantly plagued the other six-- utter confusion-- but once Rieber started wrapping things up, the book got, if not great, at least good.

One of the main differences between the Sandman (of which the Books of Magic is a spinoff) and the Books of Magic is that Rieber doesn't seem to be able to get as much across in as succinct a manner as Neil Gaiman. Needless to say, this could also be a problem with Peter Gross' artwork, but it always seemed more centered on the writing, to me. And the book starts out with problems along those lines, as Rieber takes on another rather complex storyline (this one involving both Tim and an alternate version of him) and manages to plunge the reader into confusion for a number of pages. This gets resolved towards the end of the story arc, however, and the book gets down to the brass tacks of tying up some of the series' loose ends. This is the kind of place where you expect the pace to grind to a halt, or the characters to shift into "this is what they did after the story ends" mode, or whatever. Not that this kind of thing can't be done effectively (see Sandman: The Wake for a perfect example), but more often than not it isn't. And while there is an undeniable streak of "Danny went off to college, got a degree in landscape architecture, and is now Hugh Hefner's personal groomer," it's done with a sense of style and, more importantly, pace. There is a story to be told, and Rieber does, in fact, tell it, and tell it well.

I have to admit that, aside from the first book, the Books of Magic series never did all that much for me. It's nice to see, however, that the last book almost approaches the first in quality, giving the series a bookended kind of feel that appeals. If you abandoned the series at some time in the past, at least skip forward and check this one out; it's worth your time. *** ?

                    3 out of 5 stars Unfinished Business...........2006-04-14

I have really enjoyed the "Books of Magic" series. I have loved the way they have blended the real and the fantastical, I have loved the creative spins on fantasy motifs, I have felt for Timothy Haunter's painful journey, and I have loved the sometimes very beautiful artwork in these books.

This volume collects issues 42 to 50 of the comics series. There are 75 issues in the "Books of Magic" - the last third of the story has not been anthologised by VERTIGO. (This collection first appeared in 2001.) What the other reviewers may have felt is the sense of being in the middle part of a story - some parts resolved, low-key, but not yet entering the final stage of the tale's revelations.

There is a latter collection "The Names of Magic" which I picked up. Its prelude tells briefly of what happens in the 25 issues I have been unable to read. It is painful - I want this final third of the original story in all its multipanel technicolor glory, but it has not been collected and published by VERTIGO.

                    Perhaps we should petition them.

2 out of 5 stars NO sense of Completion.......2004-06-24

I loved the the Ideas in this series, and feel that the Execution of said ideas was Never fully birthed, especially in this Volume. The Story of Tim Hunter is full of great characters but in this volume their voices never gain the gravity of a full personality.Tim's suedo father never seems to grow outside the bland dad who almost eats nuns and occasionaly turns into chocalate, contrivences that point out his blandness by seeking to over-compinsate.The story threads of the previous books still dangle in our faces, while we are helplessly waiting for for some sense of milestone, lost on tims journey, doubting its undertaking if it leads us nowhere.I believe this comic is a victim of the monthly publishing wars and never grew out of the ruff sketches of Neil Gaiman. And yet, i still read, captivated by the profound ideas in this book. I just hope that the movie of this series inspires some Alan moorian hooka-Induced plot scripting to reinvigarate a series all of us readers desire. If you like the series, you know your going to buy this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good trees, but not much of a forest.......2002-07-09

I was disappointed in this book because I expected Reiber's end, as the writer, to come in a way that concluded all the work up to this point. But nothing ever seems to really end, or ever really be concluded, in this series. Big plotlines come and go and are MOSTLY finished, but seem to end abruptly, and not for good reasons. I'd say "Death After Death" needed one more draft to reach its potential.

However, there are a LOT of very good things in these issues. Tim Hunter finally comes to a decision about his powers. Many hanging plot elements are settled, if not always satisfactorily. There are many great individual scenes, and it makes for fascinating reading. If you're a fan of this series, then I have to recommend this book, but...

The main problem is this: you can't keep explaining old plot twists just by introducing new plot twists. Think of a story as a road. At some point, it's supposed to take the reader to a real destination. I suspect Reiber may actually disagree with that philosophy of writing--to him, it's all about the journey, and who cares what it all adds up to? Well, his work on the Books of Magic makes a pretty good argument...there's a LOT to like here...but in the end, I'm a bit disappointed in a story that's all trees and no forest.

2 out of 5 stars The promising start dwindles away.......2002-01-25

I don't know what happened to John Ney Rieber... after his promising start on The Books of Magic, his stories slowly started to lose that magic. These stories fall at the end of Rieber's run at the title, and they're mighty thin gruel compared to what came before.

It may be the fact that any elements of light or real humor have been vacuumed from the book. Molly, a fantastic creation, isn't very much in evidence here and Tim Hunter's incessant whining simply becomes too much. Artist Gross took over the book after this series and made some improvements, but it was too late and the book ended. Rieber did a Books of Faerie with Molly that showed the man had lost his way: It shared much with this volume in the incomprehensible storytelling and not-very-interesting characterizations.

So, for completists only, and only for those completists willing to have their fond memories of the series in its heyday sullied by this volume.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Bill Sullivan: King of the Hollow.......2000-06-14

Wild Bill Sullivan is probably the most colorful character that South Mississippi has ever produced. Born in mid-18th century, he was the King of Sullivan's Hollow and was accused of 50 killings. He was also the center of numerous pranks and jokes. Because she was a college history professor, the author skillfully weaves the sometimes far-fetched tales into an account of an atypical frontier culture. The narrative also includes pictures and a description of one of the oldest homes in South Mississippi, the Sullivan Home, now on the National Register of Homes. At the beginning of this small but fascinating book, Ms. Hammons, the great-granddaughter of Wild Bill, traces the Sullivans' Irish Roots back to the 1750's. Thomas Sullivan, founder of the Mississippi branch of the clan, had 22 children, 11 by his white legal wife and 11 by his common-law Indian wife. A genealogy of the family is located in the appendix of the book. The latter section of the book centers around the years 1900-1980 and concentrates on other Smith County stories. The book is well-researched with footnotes and bibliograhpy. Here's an example of one of the humorous tales in the book: Outsiders in the late 1800's feared stopping over in the Hollow because of Wild Bill's reputed antipathy towards strangers. One traveler got caught at dark and stopped at the edge of the Hollow. He was cordially greeted, fed, given a bed by the fire, and served a plentiful country breakfast. His host refused any pay for these services. The traveler thanked his host and expressed his relief that he had met such a nice family and had avoided Wild Bill. In reality, Wild Bill had been his host, but he sent the man on his way without revealing his identity. The book also includes a graphic account, in Wild Bill's own words (in 1929 to his grandson-in-law) of the Battle of Shiloh Church, a battle in which several of the Sullivans were killed. After a later incident, Wild Bill and his son Neece had to hide out in the woods for 2 years. However, Bill was only indicted for one killing--of his own brother Wilson!

This short book is interesting reading but not a serious history work. Those who live near Sullivan's Hollow have heard the reputation of the place, but if this book is accurate, there is little to the legend.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Anecdotal Goodness.......2003-05-22

This book reviews the history of a place that doesn't even exist to the rest of the world. I happen to live half an hour from the Hollow, and it fits the typical description of the "reputation" of the people that live there today.

If you like reading historical writings, I highly recommend this.

If you buy only one film book in your life, this should be it. Maltin is the filmgoer's guide--the most compact, intelligent, and informative reference available. Alphabetized by title, each of its more than 19,000 entries lists year of release, running time, director, principal cast, and availability on video. Other guides may offer even more information, but Maltin's is distinguished by the quality of its reviews. Rating films on a scale from "****" to "BOMB," it offers a comprehensive introduction to the international cinema, covers the classics with the respect they deserve, unearths thousands of little-known gems, takes the wind out of the overrated, and laughs at the awful with appropriate good humor. If you want proof of Maltin's versatility, compare the reviews of The Battleship Potemkin, History Is Made at Night, Blue Velvet, and The Navy vs. the Night Monsters. Standard, crucial, great fun to read, chock full of trivia, and bursting with passion for the movies. --Raphael Shargel

I can't believe Leonard Maltin would give Mission to Moscow and Baby Doll a ***1/2 rating and give Saratoga Trunk a *1/2 and Unconquered a **1/2. Stupid, stupid man who only cares about films HE likes. And no, Mission to Moscow is not a "well-made propaganda film", since everything in it is lies, lies and more lies.

3 out of 5 stars Movie Guru or Overrated Rater?.......2003-11-20

I first learned about Mr. Maltin and his "Movie Bible" a few years ago, and I think it's the kind of book a lot of people either love or love to hate.
Pros: Short, to-the-point reviews, relevant information about the films and lots of neat bonus info that I as an enthusiastic amateur certainly didn't know about.
Cons: I often tend to disagree with the reviews, but then again it is a very subjective matter, based solely on your own perception of the film. I wasn't happy, though, to see one of my favorites "The Big Lebowski" recieve only 2½, but fair is fair...another, and more important, minus is the fact that far too few foreign films (e.g. danish?) are listed. The Movie World isn't all american, Mr. Maltin! And how does he define the nationality? Take the film "Reptilicus", shot in Denmark with a danish cast, speaking Danish. The only thing american about that movie is the director - and it's listed as 100% U.S.!
Having said all this, the book does give you a solid introduction to the world of film-watching, and I'm sure the editors had good reasons for making the choices they did. I'd sure like to hear them, though...

3 out of 5 stars Great reference guide from a not so great film crictic.......2003-09-06

I love this book in that it's the perfect reference guide to just about any film out there. However, Leonard Maltin isn't the greatest film critic. Well, I guess no critic is that great. I just hate browsing through this book and seeing that he rates some of my favorite films as only two or two and a half stars out of four. Once in a while, he's right on, but other times he's just totally off.

But all in all, this is still a great reference guide.

I try to buy the Leonard Maltin book every year. I am not alone.
I may occasionally disagree with a particular review but that is human nature. This book is a great resource book. As I get older the fine print is getting to my eyes. He does release a trade size version of the book. Check the back for the index of stars.

3 out of 5 stars reveiwing the reveiwer........2002-07-01

Here's the deal with Leonard Maltin. Most of the time he delivers very good and informative reveiws that I find helpful, but when he doed not like the movie he is reviewing the reveiw usually falls short. In a way it makes sense that he would not go into the detail he would on a film he loved versus a film he hated considering there are thousands of movies reviewed here, but then the bad review is sort of worthless if he's not going to give a lot of thought into it. Sometimes a bad review is worth reading.

Another thing I want mention about any film guide Leonard Malten has put out is that if you watch movies and don't hold things like bad direction against the film then releaize Leonard Malten dose. Thats just being a good critic, but I can see were is would get on some ones nerves.

                              Book Description

In this fresh and inventive book, James Treadwell lays open the rich possibilites for interpretation offered across the full range of Wagner's art. Focusing on Wagner's music, dramas, and prose writings, rather than on questions of biography or influence, the book carefully traces the tensions and uncertainties embedded within the composer's central themes. Treadwell identifies and pursues the habitual concerns of Wagner's operas and writings: enchantment, seduction, heroism, victory, transcendence, and sacredness. While Wagner's work repeatedly and urgently sets itself to deny various or ambiguous interpretations, the operas themselves are nevertheless far more intricate and conflicted than this denial allows for. In this altered light, the dimensions of Wagner's art are unexpectedly extended, and its enduring vitality is refreshingly reasserted.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent entrance in Wagner for non-specialists.......2004-01-31

First off, Treadwell is sole author, not editor of this readable and fascinating study of what's happening within Wagner's operas and his writings about them. As one of the many thousands of persons hooked on "The Ring" operas and puzzled by their peculiar power, I wanted to find a study of this which did not require specialized musical training, and was written without jargon. Treadwell does a fine job of discerning themes he calls: romance, revolution, exile and religion. I recommend the book for its thoughtful examination of this topic, at a very different level than a book written for musicologists and also very different than internet chat discussions of "Why does Kundry die at the end?"

A useful guide, for when I was interested. If you are going to a club or other place for a game, a convenient small size to brush up on things if you want a refreshers.

Goes over all the major and not so major necessary situations and strengths to understand.

If you really want to increase your endgame strength then use this book. The examples are clear, concise and easy to understand without being boring (Unlike the Averbach Essential chess endgame book). Also the book is a great value.
Although a bit dated and using Descriptive notion the examples come from pre 1950 and include, Alekhine, Capablanca, Rubenstein, Euwe Botvinnik, Keres etc all greats of the endgame. I have found this to be the easiest book from which to assimilate the required practical knowledge. It was way ahead of its time and includes the theory of corresponding squares which is often only included in advanced texts. Once this book is finished your endgame practical skill will be at the master level. I would also recommend that you also use the Hooper Pocket book of Endgames for additional examples for study.

This book *explains* the ideas (themas) behind the positions. As many chess masters have stated - it's the study of the end-game that makes you a chess master. This is a good book to start the study. The descriptive (non-algebraic) notation in this book should not deter you - think of it as an additional mental exercise in chess thinking ;)

                                        4 out of 5 stars almost perfect..........2000-11-01

This is a great book...really helpful...The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the chaper on Rook endings is occasionaly not clear enough (It is apparently targeted towards a more sophisticated reader - I am a beginner-intermediate player) This chapter could use some improvement. Still I am extremely happy with this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars How to Play Chess Endings.......2000-03-31

This is a classic endgame text. Znosko-Borovsky is a smooth, lucid writer. All the basic endgames are given. He concentrates on logical thinking in the endgame, analysing a position, and developing a plan of action. The emphasis is on aims, plans, and ideas, rather than on reams of varitions. If you want that kind of book, pick up Fine's Basic Chess Endings or the series by Averbach. But these books are dull, tedious and for masters and above. Even experts would get a lot out of this book. The value is excellent as well. The best way to improve is to concentrate your study on endings (most people play them quite badly) and tactics. Forget those opening books. (CFC Expert)

The book covers the fundamentals of accounting in a very good manner by reviewing basic concepts repetitively.

I was first introduced to the seventh edition at our local library. This is an excellent training tool for accounting. For anyone who likes to learn on their own this is great!

I'm not an accountant and I recently started an MBA. Accounting is a very hard course and our textbook isn't very helpful at teaching how to do the calculations that underpin the preparation of financial statements. The Essentials of Accounting Workbook really dumbs down the concepts involved in making these calulcations to a very simple level. It has been a huge help. The format seems pretty childish at first, but it is designed to make very small incremental steps through each concept.

I have 2 masters degrees - I have not come across a book that does such a good job of explaining the fundamentals.

Additionally, the format of the book - read and answer questions 'fill in the blanks' style, helps you remember what you read.

If you want to get a great start in accounting, get this book.
