Book Description
Dale Chihuly turns glass into art, artists into glassmakers, children into artists, and adults into children. Elton John has called him "The Picasso of 20th-century glass" and many hail him as the Tiffany of the 21st century. He has pioneered a technically demanding new art form that blends performance art, sculpture, and environments in the creation of spectacularly colorful worlds. His uplifting art possesses the edginess that only fragile glass born from blasting hot furnaces can inspire. The Essential(tm) Dale Chihuly is the book to read if you have zero tolerance for artspeak and a lively curiosity about what has made this glass artist so popular.

Glass Art For Dummies.......2004-03-26
This book would make a wonderful coffee table book if it weren't so small. The great thing about the book is that we see 74 color plates of Chihuly's work. Chihuly is a genius who manages to create a fireworks display of color and light in glass. Unfortunately, Warmus doesn't know how to write. The book pretends to be unpretentious, but it is, in fact, simple-minded. For example, in the section Warmus calls "The Merchant of Venetians," he writes: "Chihuly is astonished by these wildly innovative and beautiful pieces from the 1920s and 1930s. Ever the savvy businessman, he knows that their rarity drives collectors to snap them up whenever they become available. He'd love to collect them, but knows they are too rare. How to do it? Eureka! He decides to pretend that he is back in the 1920s and that HE - Dale Chihuly - is creating these priceless items himself!"
If you buy this book, look at the pictures. If you decide to actually READ it, have a few strong drinks first.

Togashi outdoes himself........2007-06-11
Yoshihiro Togashi, Yuyu Hakusho: Eat or Be Eaten (ViZ, 1992)
[note: this review contains a major spoiler for volume 10. If you're not that far along in the series, DO NOT READ.]
Finally, the finals! Yusuke's crew and Team Toguro finally meet up again, and Eat or Be Eaten covers the first three matches (well, two and a half). With Team Toguro never having revealed their fifth member and Team Urameshi having lost Genkai, the first third or so of the book is devoted to the mystery of who each team's fifth member will be. Maybe I'm slow on the uptake, but I found both revelations to be a complete surprise. After that, it's back to the fighting, which comes thick and fast in the Yuyu Hakusho tradition. Togashi, though, is never without a couple of tricks up his sleeve, and manages to keep things not only fast-paced, but interesting as well. The Hiei/Bui battle may be the best we've seen in the series to date. This is a good one. ****

Yoshihiro Togashi, Yuyu Hakusho: The Championship Match Begins (ViZ, 1992)
It's the moment we've all been waiting for: Yusuke goes up against Toshiro the Younger. Just to make things interesting, the team captains bet their respective lives on the combatant each is backing. Who will prevail? The Dark Tournament storyline is finally coming to a close with the battle we've been waiting for for six volumes now. About time! As is to be expected, this one's all about the action, but it's still pretty good for an all-action entry in the series. ****

The Dark Tournament continues..........2007-06-11
Yoshihiro Togashi, Yuyu Hakusho: The Huge Ordeal (ViZ, 1992)
The Dark Tournament continues into the semifinals as Team Urameshi takes on the Fractured Fairy Tales. Yusuke and Mask, though, have something more important than fighting to do, leaving the other three to handle the FFT. Not that that bothers Hiei, who's ready to take on the whole team single-handedly... the Dark Tournament plotline is really starting to get a bit long in the tooth, mostly because there's no real development in this volume; it's the first time I've felt that the Dark Tournament plot was simply fighting for fighting's sake. While it's still fun stuff, I've come to expect a good deal more from Yuyu Hakusho. Not one of the better volumes. *** ½

Roy Blount doesn't like being 55. But then, does anyone? Hindsight being 20/20, we're sure to notice the mammoth pile of quirks, foibles, and just plain oddball behavior--not to mention downright nastiness--each of us has accumulated at the midlife point. If there's an observer you'd want to have there with you to sort out the good you've done (or at least the funny bits) and make all those bittersweet memories melt on your tongue, Blount may be the one.
In Be Sweet, his hilarious yet deeply moving personal memoir, Blount holds up the recollections of his life for all to see, like an archaeologist uncovering something precious and rare, exposing his soul to the air. "There are various ways of being shameless in the world," he says. "One is to write a memoir." And this life's story, told in a subtle and self-effacing style, is shamelessly funny.
While exploring the maddening subtext of his relationship with his mother, Blount has written "a conditional love story," and shaped a wonderfully entertaining memoir filled with poignant truths and brilliant reflections. Be Sweet may leave you laughing, but you'll likely feel a little something welling in the corner of your eye, and find yourself looking at your own life with a smile on your face. --George Laney
Book Description
In the book his laughing and loving readers have been waiting for, our generation's master of full-hearted humor lays open the soul of his life story.
Roy Blount Jr.--Georgia boy turned New York wit, lover of baseball and interesting women, bumbling adventurer, literary lion, salty-limerick virtuoso and impassioned father--journeys into the past and his psyche (also all the way to China, sixty feet underwater and to various Manhattan hot spots) in search of the answers to three riddles that have haunted him intimately:
One: the riddle of "the family curse." Two: the riddle of what drives him (or anyone) to be funny. Three: the riddle of what so cruelly tangled his unseverable bond with the beguiling, beaten orphan girl who became the impossible mother who raised him to Be Sweet.
Roy Blount's memoir is sardonic and sentimental, hilarious and grieving, brazen and bashful, tough and tender--sometimes by turns and sometimes all at once. Almost harshly honest, yet sportively wayward, Be Sweet resonates with the complex but bouncy chords of a whole man singing, clinkers and all.
Customer Reviews:
bitter with the sweet.......1999-10-29
I was lucky enough to stumble across Roy Blount reading from this book in a Vermont bookstore. I bought it on the spot, telling him that it was the first one of his books that I had paid full price for. He thought this was pretty fun, the store employee sitting next to him didn't. This book is worth its full price.
Be Sweet in no way sets out to "make fun of the mother-son relationship". I suppose because Blount is such an irreverent goof-ball on the radio and in print, it seems fair to have that preconception. However, Blount has always let us know that some things are sacred and after you get a short way into this book you realize that family is one of them. He desperately does not want to cast aspersions on his own mother's character, but he has to acknowledge that she did drive him to distraction throughout his life.
There were several points in this book were Blount seems to be going off on a tangent. To be honest I began to wonder if he was just filling the space between the covers. Oh me of little faith! In the last third of the book I was progressively more amazed and impressed as I discovered that his seemingly unconnected threads were actually germane to the resolution of his mid-life psychic wrestling match with himself.
Bill Bryson's recent A Walk In the Woods similarly surprised me. I don't expect journalists to write deeply personal prose. Roy Blount beats Bryson hands down as far as the psychological depths that are plumbed and illuminated. If the presentation of the psychological dimension of things bores you or insults your sense of decorum, then don't read this Roy Blount book. If you want to know what is going on in the head of middle aged white Southern guys of above average emotional honesty, then this is a pretty good place to start.
A not very funny humorist!.......1999-07-02
Having roared at Roy Blount's humor on the Garrison Keillor show, I really looked forward to reading his book making fun of the mother-son relationship so aptly caught up in the title, "Be Sweet". I was terribly disappointed and found him not only lacking in humor but exhibiting a real dislike for females altogether. It was a book I easily gave away to the second hand shop.
An amazing book; very serious, but still true to past work.......1999-01-23
I was very surprised by this book on a number of levels. I've thought Blount's past works were funny, but also quite well thought out. Blount is never "funny" in the sense that Dave Berry is funny. There is no silliness about Blount; he is firmly grounded in reality.
This work is very serious. It is his attempt to displell his "family curse." He explores his relationships with his parents, sister, and ex-wives. He speculates on the nature of humor and humorists.
I thought the book was brilliant. It's like Blount is willing to talk about things that no one else will because doing so would sound stupid, but it's still what you want to say.
An added bonus is Blount's voice. He is not a particularly elegant reader. But it is hard to imagine any other voice reading this work. I compare it to Jean Shepard, who also has the perfect voice for his own work.
Ingeniously written but a little self-indulgent.......1998-12-13
By the end of this book, I knew for certain that it was worth reading although I had many doubts until then. Blount made me laugh and made me marvel at his skill, but he also bored me with his self-loathing and longueurs. The chapter on the troubles of men named after their fathers (juniors) was excruciatingly dull, and forgot to make mention of Hank Williams Junior, one of the most grandiose sufferers from this syndrome. Worse, Blount junior never really explained what made his mother so maddening. Nevertheless, he tells very well how he finally came to value what she (and his father) gave to him.
a wonderful and, yes, sweet, book.......1998-11-06
i bought this and looked it a good month or two before reading it. there was something about the way it was set up that i found off-putting. it wasn't a typical memoir or autobiography but blount's not a typical writer. once i began, though, i couldn't stop. it's funny, of course, but tender, biting and revealing all at once. we love our mothers, we may hate our mothers but we will never forget our mothers. a better book on a related subject is rick bragg's "All Over But the Shouting."
Book Description
This bold and original book examines in detail a relatively new genre of filmthe erotic thriller. Linda Ruth Williams traces the genre's exploitation of pornography and noir, discusses mainstream stars (including Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone) as well as genre-branded direct-to-video stars, charts the work of key producers and directors, and considers home videos as a distinct form of viewing pleasure. She maps the history of the genre, analyzing hundreds of movies from blockbusters such as Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, and In the Cut to straight-to-video film titles such as Carnal Crimes, Sins of Desire, and Night Eyes.
Williams's witty and illuminating readings tell the story of this sensational genre and contribute to the analysis of mainstream screen sexand its censorshipat the beginning of the 21st century. She shows that as the erotic thriller plays out the sexual fantasies of contemporary America, it also provides a vehicle for marketing those fantasies globally.

A Useful and Highly Entertaining Genre Study.......2006-07-17
A year after its release, The Erotic Thriller in Contemporary Cinema is as useful and as readable as ever. Linda Ruth Williams's wide-ranging genre study may strike first-time readers--especially those interested in the overlapping fields of Hollywood cinema, cult cinema, and pornographic cinema--as an unprecedented resource. Combining textual and contextual analysis, The Erotic Thriller in Contemporary Cinema covers the erotic thriller's most important moments, styles, and subgenres, integrating the whole with original industrial research that includes eight filmmaker interviews and a rich array of insider anecdotes. Though her history of the genre is rooted in Hollywood noir and neo-noir, Williams offers a precise account of how this genre has moved from peek-a-boo stylization to full-blown pornography and from high-concept excess to direct-to-video thrift. Williams also offers an account of how the erotic thriller has moved across national borders. As a result, The Erotic Thriller in Contemporary Cinema is not only a valuable look at Hollywood cinema but one of the best studies of international porn available. Indeed, Williams's book is adept at illustrating how in the erotic thriller the "problem" of pornography intertwines with issues of gender, reception, technology, financing, and cultural status. I was most taken by the details Williams supplied regarding genre-branded celebrities like Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas, and Joe Eszterhas--and was impressed that she paid equal attention to cult icons like Gregory Dark and Katt Shea. I should also note the grace, clarity, and humor Williams's prose. Williams has written a book that scholars in film studies, sex-and-gender studies, and cultural studies will find indispensable--as well as one that readers with a more leisurely interest in film will find entertaining and accessible.

Checker Power.......2005-09-30
Very disapointed. I did not lean anything new. I expected some good stratagies for winning the game.I think any thinking person would already know the tips they gave.
Checker Power by Robert W. Pike.......2001-01-27
Today I received my copy of "Checker Power by Robert W. Pike. I was excited about advancing my knowledge and skills in the game of checkers. I spent the next '10' minutes reading this (book). Each set of pages contain, (on one page), a LARGE checker board which takes up the entire page. The opposite page contained at least 'one' (usually small), paragraph explaining the absolute most basic aspects of checkers. If you have ever played even one game of checkers, you know more than all the knowledge contained in this (book). I say (book) in parenthesis because this should be classified as a PAMPHLET. The entire book contained about 40 or 50 paragraphs..!! Need I continue!. AOL, please do us a favor and remove this "PAMPHLET" so others will not have to pay the postage to get this PAMPHLET and the postage to RETURN this PAMPHLET.! Richard Mathis rdsupply@easilink.com
A fine book for beginners.......1999-07-20
An excellent book for beginners. It stresses the official colors for board & checkers, teaches the correct rules in an interesting way. There have been exceedingly few new books on checkers in the last 40 years or so. I have given away several copies of this book to nieces, nephews, and children of friends.

Very Effective Approach to prioritizng Time.......2007-05-25
Thank you Todd Duncan! This book continues and finishes Referral of a Lifetime. Basically, what Mr Duncan does is call attention to what we are doing with our time. He then presents a clear, concise way in which we can prioritize better. He may have been inspired by John Maxwell's Thinking for a Change. This is because Todd believes in managing your tasks during the day. It is akin to the concept of writing out 6 tasks that need to be accomplished today and work at them until finished without letting any other task interrupt you. What is even better with Mr Duncans approach is to set up folders in which to place these other tasks that arrive in our lives so that we can categorically and systematically face them at or before their appropriate time. Todd does a great job in finishing this book which will undoubtedly lead to more writings from him. In the Party trap he speaks of Health, financial and spiritual fitness, purpose, and Knowledge. This is a book worth reading even if you are not a "salesperson".
Tried and true time management for salespeople.......2006-08-09
Countless tasks compete for a salesperson's time every day. Salespeople who fall into these "time traps" sacrifice the hours they need to invest in their ultimate purpose: selling. Sales and work-life balance expert Todd Duncan identifies the eight most common time traps that snare salespeople (and other businesspeople, also), including the "identity trap," the "organization trap," the "control trap" and the "party trap." He explains how to dodge these traps and streamline your workday so that you devote most of your time to selling. He offers strategies for selling more in less time, such as nurturing relationships with high-value customers to generate repeat business and referrals. Duncan also suggests ideas about how to use all your new free time, offering guidelines for balancing your life outside of work. There is a Christian flavor to his advice, but it is subtle and shouldn't deter those who are not spiritually oriented. This isn't a magic formula for increasing sales or buying time; in fact, much of the information is not new. But we recommend it as a nicely packaged approach to maximizing the value of your time as a salesperson, not only in your workday, but also in your life.
Very Good.......2006-04-19
Time management books and seminars can easily be a little vague and "fluffy". Duncan's book - particularly the first half - is filled with sensible, hands-on techniques and inspiration to regain control of your time and consequently your sales accounts.
I particularly appreciated the "Yes Trap" chapter which included a study on how salespeople spend their time (only 20% selling or prospecting, 80% admin, trouble shooting, etc).
The last few chapters felt less useful to me. In particular the Party Trap chapter ("wasting time celebrating success") is not something that I or my sales force could relate to, and the final chapter on Freedom citing Morrie from Tuesdays with Morrie fame held no value whatsoever for me. What I wanted were practical, concrete tools and techniques to improve the effectiveness of my sales force, and that is what I got in much of the first part of the book.
It's not about time management, it's about task management.......2006-01-04
One sentence summary: Build an effective and efficient team, don't waste time on nonproductive tasks and do what you enjoy doing.
NOTE: You may think that this book is not for you since it specifically states that it is for "Swamped Salespeople," but when you think about it, we are all salespeople in one way or another.
As a small business owner and entrepreneur, I am always looking for ways to make more time. Of course, everyone knows you can't make more time, but as Todd Duncan and his book Time Traps demonstrates there are ways that you can make better use of your time. The key is task management.
Here is a one sentence summary of each of the chapters:
1) Chasing the Wind - Don't try to manage your time.
2) The Identity Trap - Determine how to spend less time "working" while still being productive.
3) The Organization Trap - Stop wasting time (e.g. checking email every 5 minutes)
4) The Yes Trap - Stop saying yes all the time.
5) The Control Trap (get ready for a reality check) - Build a team!
NOTE: At one time or another we have fallen into the Control Trap. Remember, the first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem. :)
6) The Technology Trap - Use technology only if it makes you more efficient.
7) The Quota Trap - Quality over quantity.
8) The Failure Trap - Don't cry over spilled milk, learn from the spillage and pour better next time.
9) The Party Trap - "Success in never final." Winston Churchill
10) Freedom (the touchy, feely chapter I liked which you MUST read) - "If a deep voice inside is telling you there's something more, something better, something you're still longing for, something worth striving for and fighting for, then your heart is still beating and there is still time to do something about it." (Time Traps)
One other thing that I like about this book is that there are executive summaries for every chapter, so you can get a really good idea about Duncan's recommendations in an hour (or as long as it takes you to read through 9 executive summaries and the last chapter on Freedom).
This is another definite addition to the Corea Properties and Esenai libraries.
Gotta go continue building the team...
How to get 4 extra hours out your day...without working late.......2005-09-24
Early on in my career, I was given the advice to "touch each piece of paper only once". This is a utopian ideal, that doesn't actually occur on planet earth. In my line of work, there are up to eleven individuals involved in the average transaction, and i am supposed to somehow coordinate ten or so such transactions each month.
This book is for anyone who has worked a 12 hour day, and still had work spill over into tomorrow. Put another way, if you've ever thought to yourself "there must be a better way", then you ought to not only buy this book, but also read it from cover to cover.
No matter how efficient you may consider yourself, you will be surprised at how much room for improvement there actually is. This book offers simple commonsense solutions to the various "time traps" that tend to steal away hours of our valuable time, often without us being aware of the extent.
One of the major concepts is that you can't manage time, but you can manage "events". The book suggests various ways to study and perfect how you use your time, and suggests that if you "take care of the minutes, the hours will take care of themselves".
You might also consider checking out "High Trust Selling" from the same author. Both of these books introduce their ideas as laws or concepts which fit into an overall business and life philosophy. The ideas introduced are based on a study of top producers and superstars in various industries.
These books are both an excellent investment and a good read, and will probably change your entire outlook on time management and running your business "by design".
