5 out of 5 stars Jam-packed with useful drawings of every type!.......1998-10-03

I rate this book 5 Stars because it is so comprehensive in its variety of people and objects. The sheer volume of choices of style, poses, type of items -- this is like an artist's candy store.

I used this book first as a student, and now as an interior designer. It is a helpful tool to be used to augment visual presentations. The addition of these items adds "life" to otherwise static room renderings.

While it is true that a VERY FEW drawings are not actually to scale, the vast majority of this book is extremely accurate. Some sections state scale specifically, others indicate "random scale." It's up to designers to have the ability to tell whether something fits the scale of the drawing they are working on.

I don't hesitate to recommend this book for anyone who wishes to add a little life to their drawings.

3 out of 5 stars errors in trace!.......1997-10-12

Althought the drawings are very good in TRACE, they are NOT to scale! Look closely at the 1/2 inch scale, and you will see that the reclining woman is 8 feet tall! The page header indicates that the drawings are to scale, and as designers, we need them to scale, the fact is this is a misrepresentation. I am surprised that this error, which occurs frequently in this book, escaped the editing process!

4 out of 5 stars a great resource.......2001-11-16

For interior designers or architects, this is a great book to have around. It makes it quick and easy to incorporate people, cars and trees into your work. The people are in all different positions, alone or in groups, and in many different activities. With todays technology you can easily enlarge or downsize any of the pictures to fit in your work perfectly. i would have given it five stars but since it is from 1976 some of the people are a little outdated looking but that is easy to fix in your drawings. This is a great resource to have.

Book Description

Three Faces of Beauty offers a unique approach to understanding globalization and cultural change based on a comparative, ethnographic study of a nearly universal institution: the beauty salon. Susan Ossman traces the images and words of the beauty industry as they developed historically between Paris, Cairo, and Casablanca and then vividly demonstrates how such images are embodied today in salons located in each city.
By examining how images from fashion magazines, film, and advertising are enacted in beauty salons, Ossman demonstrates how embodiment is able to display and rework certain hierarchies. While offering the possibility of freedom from the tethers of status, nation, religion, and nature, beauty is created by these very categories and values, Ossman shows. Drawing on hundreds of interviews, she documents the various rituals of welcome, choice-making, pricing practices, and spatial arrangements in multiple salons . She also reveals ways in which patrons in all three cities imagine and co-opt looks they believe are fashionable in the other cities. By observing salons as scenes of instruction, Ossman reveals that beautiful bodies evolve within the intertwining contexts of media, modernity, location, time, postcolonialism, and male expectation.
Three Faces of Beauty will interest anthropologists as well as scholars of globalization, media and communication, postcolonialism, and women’s studies.

3 out of 5 stars Ossman Explores Global Beauty.......2002-06-06

"Imagine you are getting a haircut. You hold a picture up beside your face, telling the beautician to cut a bit more here or feather the bangs, as in the photograph. In one salon you hear the voices of several women telling you that you really ought not to have your hair cut as short as the model in the picture" visiting Associate Professor in the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies Susan Ossman challenges readers in Three Faces of Beauty (Duke University Press, March 2002). In another salon, a beautician may strive to reproduce the pictured hairstyle as faithfully as possible; in another, you are the focus and asked to "please put away that awful photograph - would you not rather simply look like the real you?"

In her latest book, Ossman explores and compares the atmosphere, discourse and activity in a variety of beauty salons in three cities, which the publisher describes as "a unique approach to understanding globalization and cultural change based on a comparative, ethnographic study of a nearly universal institution: the beauty salon." She conceives of herself a "butterfly hunter" tracking elusive and fleeting images of beauty from Paris and Cairo with their "long histories as hubs of commerce, fashion, and scholarship" to Casablanca on the "outskirts of fashion," seeking to capture these images as representations of globalization and modernization.

Drawing on hundreds of interviews conducted between 1993 and 1996, she treats beauty salons as public fora and as centers of empowerment for women that challenge tradition and mediate global trends into local practices. Choosing three cities outside the United States for her research, Ossman explores international perspectives on globalization as distinct from Americanization.

The return of beauty salons to Afghanistan, where they were banned under the Taliban, makes Ossman's new book especially timely. As images of Muslim women receive increased public attention around the world, Ossman's research uncovers practices that may seem exotic in the West, such as the publication of fashion magazines for veiled women.

Calling Three Faces of Beauty "a delightful and insightful read," past President of the American Historical Association Natalie Zemon Davis of Princeton University finds that "Susan Ossman lets us hear women's hopes for beauty and difference - out of or under the head shawl."

    Book Description

This book examines fashion from the role of the supermodel in the beauty business to the significance of cosmetics, perfumes and male fashions. Clearly written and accessible it argues that it is wrong to see fashion as the expression of haute couture. Instead what is judged to be fahionable emerges from a number of different sources in society. It will be required reading for students of culture and society.

    Book Description

From the runways of Paris to the Broadway stage, from Rising Sun to the casting controversies over Miss Saigon, from high fashion advertising to a local demonstration at the Claremont Colleges in California, About Face examines representations of Asia and their reverberations in both Asia and Asian American lives.

Based on Dorinne Kondo's fieldwork, this innovative book brings together essays, vignettes, and an interview with playwright David Henry Hwang in an illuminating discussion of how the Asian identity is used and misused in popular culture. Examining Japanese avant-garde high fashion and Asian American theater, Kindo shows us how cultural perceptions are expressed and overturned in performance--whether in the seductive spectacle of a Comme des Garcons fashion show, where striking originality has shattered the stereotype of the Japanese as imitators and technicians, of the gender-bending of M. Butterfly, which calls into question the male dominance and heterosexism of Oriental culture.

Demonstrating how issues of race, gender, nationality, and sexuality are articulated in the realm of popular culture, Kondo asks us to reappraise our assumptions of what Orientalism means in the world. Both theoretically and politically compelling, About Face offers a penetrating look at how old images or Orientalism are being contested and reshaped by a dynamic new vision of cultural identity.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2005-05-03

I enjoyed reading this book. I like chapter about Japanese fashion. Also, introduction is very interesting, as this introduces so many important concepts. For those who study Japanese culture (and Asian American cultures), this book is highly recommended.

    3 out of 5 stars About Face.......2000-03-24

Very interesting but difficult to read. About Face deals with the way race is performed in high fashion and theater. It centers on the lack of representation of Asain Americans in these areas. Her use of vocabulary and writing style do not make the book accessible to many people, which is unfortunate.

      Book Description

The legend of Lone Wolf and Cub continues to grow in this latest chapter of Koike and Kojima`s epic samurai masterpiece chronicling the wanderings of Japan`s deadliest assassin, Itto Ogami, and his infant son, Daigoro. In this volume, Ogami takes on the most dangerous killer of the countryside, foils the plans of a deceptive gambling troupe, tricks an evil lord into exposing his weak underbelly, and pits himself against the Shogun`s dangerous and deadly Kurokawa ninja! Drawing extensively from Sun Tzu`s The Art of War, and featuring the saddest puppy-dog story ever published, this must-have volume is packed with action and emotion.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two awesome stories -- get Vol. 6 for sure.......2004-07-08

The quality of storytelling, art and translation is high indeed. This volume features two great stories -- one involving political intrigue from Northern Japan, and the second features a story about yakuza. Writer Koike provides us with rich detail about the social customs -- the yakuza story is by far one of the most interesting Lone Wolf/Cub stories I've read in a while. The stories are developing -- instead of merely rely upon the hero and his son, Koike fleshes out two minor characters yet still maintains the spirit of the overall epic he is building. "Lanterns for the Dead" and "The Soldier is the Castle" are superb -- get this volume for sure.

      4 out of 5 stars Another Hard-Hitting Walk Down The Assassin's Road.......2003-05-13

How strange is it that one of the most compelling characters in comics today is a toddler who has barely uttered ten words in his comic career (As of Volume 6, anyway.)? Yet, in this world of overwritten characters, Daigoro, the "Cub" of the title, stands head and shoulders above the rest. I continue to be struck dumb by the epic battle scenes, the intricately detailed art in the "Quiet scenes", and the amount of characterization creators Koike & Kojima can effortlessly cram into a relatively small piece of an epic tale. There are some great moments her between father and son, and Daigoro gets a chance to show his "Meifumado" in the gut-wrenching final chapter. If you've been along for the ride, you don't need me to tell you how great Lone Wolf and Cub can be. If you're among the uninitiated, give Ogami & little Daigoro a try....You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Two poignant Daigoro stories are the gems in Volume 6.......2002-10-18

I keep thinking there has to be some sort of drop off in quality for the Lone Wolf and Cub stories, but here is yet another volume in this manga epic that proves me wrong. Volume 6 offers up the next five installments in this masterpiece of graphic storytelling by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, set in the Edo-period of feudal Japan:

      (29) "Lanterns for the Dead," is a change-of-pace story in which Ogami Itto and Daigoro have ordered two toro (lanterns) to be built to carry their souls upon the water. But in that same town a series of events cause a young man to beg the Ronin to sell the toro. Ogami refuses, but takes an interest in why the request was made.

      (30) "Deer Chaser" is the name given to tricksters who take advantage of people to take their money. When this particular group of conartists discovers the special symbols used to hire Lone Wolf and Cub, they decide to impersonate the assassin and get the 500 ryo payment. All they need is a child, and they happen to find one the right age sleeping all alone at a roadside shrine. You will never guess who the kid is...

      (31) "Hunger Town" finds Ogami Itto training a dog to dodge the blunt arrows he is shooting. Diagoro is obviously in love with the dog, but the animal is a key part of a plan Lone Wolf has to catch his next target.

      (32) "The Soldier is the Castle" concerns a ploy by the Shogunate to have an excuse for taking over Iwaki-Daira Han. This mission is so dangerous it involves a double payment of ryo to Ogami Itto. This particular story involves some of the more interesting discussions of the samurai philosophy in the series to this point.

      (33) "One Stone Bridge" is essentially another one of those rare but treasured Daigoro stories and a sequel to the fiery conclusion of "The Solider is the Castle." A samurai and his lady watch as a group of older boys attack Daigoro, who has fishing near a bridge. Daigoro's behavior astounds the samurai and touches the heart of his lady.

I continue to read one episode of Lone Wolf and Cub each night before I go to bed, resisting the temptation to devour each volume in a single night. But something this great needs to be savored. The looks on Daigoro's face and the different meanings invested in the word every time he says "Papa" continues to impress and move me. Better to great around to reading this epic later than never.

5 out of 5 stars Another great valume........2001-06-19

Basically if you love all the other Lone Wolf and Cub series you'll love this one as well. The stories on these are just so great. I recommend if you like mangas, samurais, or just an epic story this one is it.

4 out of 5 stars Cartoonish Exagerations, but the message is clear.......2002-06-12

I think the book is helpful to anyone having difficulty with any person (coworker, boss, subordinate) at work--but while reading you need to keep in mind these examples are extreme cases.

You can find the characteristics described in these caricatures in any person if you look hard enough, so be careful that your personal biases do not affect your interpretation of the material and/or the personality at work causing you grief.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, Entertaining, and Practical.......2001-11-17

An absolutely wonderful book -- Wess Roberts has truly done it again! With a fresh synthesis of insight, humor, and practical advice, this book is a great read and a useful guide to solving one of the most perplexing challeges of everyday life: turning dysfunctional relationships into functional ones. I particularly enjoyed his analyses of "Imperious Jerks: Masters of the Universe," "Androids: The Blindly Obedient," "Gatekeepers: The Empowerment Police," and "Perpetual Victims: The Whiners and Bitchers." While reading the book I found myself contemplating the frequent nuggets of wisdom, laughing hysterically, taking notes, and thinking about ways to implement his insights.
The true power of the book is that it opens our minds to looking for opportunities to make the best of our relationships at work. How we deal with dysfunctional people is a matter of personal choice: we can wallow in frustration or try to develop something positive. Wess Roberts offers some terrific ideas, not as "silver bullets" to make the problems go away, but as primers for us to apply our own creative thoughts and ideas to make the most of the unique relationships in which we find ourselves every day. -- Christopher D. Kolenda, Editor and Co-Author: Leadership the Warrior's Art.

        5 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2001-11-08

When I picked up this book I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I only knew about Attila the Hun and didn't expect Attila the "Get along with others." The book is terrific. It gave me some real insights about getting along with my employeer.

        5 out of 5 stars I have better relationships.......2001-11-08

I have followed Wess Roberts' career. This is by far his best work with how to deal with other people that you really can't get away from. I have used this work in my personal, private, and corporate life. Unlike most of the books I own, I didn't put this on my shelf. I keep it around when ever I have problems with my employees. I give it a 5.

5 out of 5 stars Real World Advice.......2001-10-31

I think It Takes More Than a Carrot and a Stick compares favorably to Who Moved My Cheese? in that it makes you think and react. This isn't so much a business book as it is a book of common sense for the workplace. This book makes you realize that your day-to-day focus needs to be on accomplishments, not obstacles. In other words, spend your time and energy being constructive instead of straying off course into the world of pettiness. I really enjoyed Wess Robert's practical advice for the real world.

        Product Description

The new printing of We Belong Dead has been revised and includes a new chapter by Gary J. Svehla, The Evolution of Hammer's Baron Frankenstein. This book stands as a testament to the durability of Mary Shelley’s original novel. The fact that today the name Frankenstein still elicits an immediate emotional response speaks of the universality of the Frankenstein mythos. Frankenstein’s Monster, over the course of the 20th century, became all things to all people. He was the social outcast who still had redeeming qualities. He was the loner, the tortured outsider to whom most of us could relate. He was the symbol of fear and of death, the creature better off dead who still stalked the laboratories of egocentric science. He became the metaphor for science gone bad... he was the Dark Side before Star Wars. He became a symbol that life, no matter how pathetic, was always better than death. The Monster represented a creature who sometimes wanted to die but could not. The Monster became the mirror in which the movie viewer could view the cruelty of an insensitive society that both created and later abandoned its own abominations. Whether we look at Frankenstein’s Monster as the bogeyman, as metaphor, as kindred spirit, or as society’s mirror, the fact remains that Mary Shelley knew not what she wrought during that haunted summer of 1816, and this volume is the latest effort in a relatively short line that tries to explain, looking at both cinema past and present, the meaning of Boris Karloff’s immortal words from 1935’s Bride of Frankenstein—“We belong dead!”

Midnight Marquee isn't just one of the best and longest running magazines covering horror films, they are also a fantastic publishing house who puts out some of the very best books on the horror film genre. Growing up, no monster scared me more that the Frankenstein monster. I remember every Saturday afternoon in the 70's we had a local horror host here in the Detroit area named Sir Graves Ghastly who used to show all the old Universal classics as well as a lot of the campier B movies of the 50's and 60's. "We Belong Dead" by editors Gary and Susan Svehla (and the driving forces behind Midnight Marquee) is simply the best book about Frankenstein on film ever published. The book looks at just about every film featuring the monster (certainly all of the major ones) from the silent era right up through "Van Helsing" through essays provided by the Svehla's and a bevy of knowledgeable and talented writers.

Now I knew about the 1910 short film version, the very first, produced by Thomas Edison's company, but I have never seen it covered in such detail and with so many very rare pictures from this film that was a lost classic until a copy was found in the 1980's. Charles Ogle was the first actor tapped to play the monster with makeup very different than what most are used to seeing. Ogle's monster was bestial with wild hair and long, rotting, bony hands. I'd guess it had to be quite terrifying to the audiences of the day.

The next section of the book deals with the Universal films, particular the first three films in which Boris Karloff played the monster. Gary Svehla pens a brilliant essay on the father/son relationships in the films and the various themes of isolation. Equally engrossing is John E. Parnum's piece "Frankenstein's Children" which deal with the relationship of children and the monster. Parnum rightly points out that the censors excising the scene in which the creature throws the little girl into the lake actually makes it look that much more violent. For years, audiences didn't see the anguish the monster felt when he realized his error until the scene was restored in recent years.

Next we have a very detailed look at the six Frankenstein films produced by Hammer Studios in the 1950's through the 70's, all starring Peter Cushing as Dr. Frankenstein. A detailed synopsis of each film is included, but the focus is on Cushing's evolution of the character from Aristocratic egomaniac to rogue hero, to downright evil. Because Cushing starred in each film the Hammer series was truly about the man, and not the monster.

Not to be forgotten were the cheaply made "B" movies of the 50's and 60's. By this time, the book points out, Frankenstein had become a commodity to make money off of with little regard for the source material, or the traditions created at Universal and Hammer. Still, movies such as "I was a Teenage Frankenstein", "Frankenstein's Daughter" and "Frankenstein 1970" are still kind of hokey fun and it's unfortunate that they rarely turn up on TV anymore.

The 70's began to usher in an era of Frankenstein films that tried to remain faithful to Mary Shelley's original story. Among these were the 1970's TV version "Frankenstein: The True Story", a very underrated version with Michael Sarrazin as the monster; the 1992 TNT version with Patrick Bergin and Randy Quaid; and the disappointing 1994 "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" with Robert DeNiro horribly miscast as the monster.

No mention of Frankenstein would be complete without Mel Brooks' classic "Young Frankenstein" and this book doesn't disappoint with a wonderful essay by Robert Alan Crick. And don't worry...there are many other Frankenstein films covered in the book including the under appreciated "Monster Squad".

If you're a Frankenstein fan then this is simply a book you must have. Thoroughly informative and entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Use this more as a reference book. This is the central volume of the three........2005-12-09

This is the central volume in William S. Newman's monomaniacal project on the history of the sonata idea. The book surveys composers and the kinds of works they wrote that they call sonata. It is the survey aspect rather than the analytical aspect that needs to be remembered. More than one person has wondered at the sheer volume of information contained here and why anyone would want to know all of this. Others have wondered what it means to call a work a sonata when it has been applied to so many varied kinds of works.

It is in the classic era (i.e. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, et al) that the "sonata" becomes the most codified. There is the actual "sontata-form" and the decades of debate surrounding all that this binary-three part form really means. However, there is also the instrumental sonata as a multi-movement work and the various components composers have used over the centuries there. However, it can also mean a single movement work.

So, it is interesting to survey all of this difference under a single heading. I remember a class where we wondered at all these names no one knew and we went to the library and dug up some of their works, brought them to class and played them. After hearing them we decided that history was right to note the difference between Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven and few others while forgetting so many of the rest. There is a difference.

Newman notes that thousands of sonatas were written in these decades just as thousands of novels are written in our time. Just as most of the novels are not only not worth reading, they are a waste of everyone's resources, so are most of the sonatas. However, the gems are truly delightful and make all the waste worthwhile. Nature is prodigal in the creation of fish eggs, so she might as well be the same with musicians and their music as well.

I see this more as a reference book and something you dip in and out of rather than something to plow through front to back. You can't possibly remember it all or even figure out why you would want to.

5 out of 5 stars This author has a lot to say, and so do I........2005-08-14

When I bought this 800-page volume, I expected an analysis of the sonata form. Instead, I got a historical treatise on the subject.

As a historical treatise, however, one could not ask for more. The bibliography alone is 59 pages long. Moreover, the author apparently read through hundreds of sonatas in preparation for this book. It staggers the imagination that the author's lifetime allowed enough time to write not only this book, but two more comparable works on the sonata before and after the classical era.

There is a discussion on Domenico Alberti, whom most of us know only as the name for the "Alberti bass." That got me so curious that I ordered a photocopy of his music from the Library of Congress. There is also a discussion on Muzio Clementi, whom we know chiefly for his 6 Sonatinas. There were numerous discussions on composers who have been long forgotten.

Through these long hours of reading, one could learn many interesting facts. Here is a sampling:

--Two of Clementi's sonatas, which contain the Morse code V rhythm, might have inspired Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

--The nickname for Beethoven's "Tempest" Sonata comes from a biographer who claims that mentioned literary as inspiration for some of his piano sonatas. If that biographer had unbridled rein, the "Moonlight" Sonata would be the "King Lear" Sonata, the "Pastorale" Sonata would be "A Winter's Tale" Sonata, and the "Waldstein" Sonata would be the "Odyssey" Sonata.

--The "Moonlight" Sonata reminded Berlioz of sunshine rather than moonlight.

--Sonatas with prominent keyboard parts and subordinate violin parts were customary at the time. It seems that most of those violin parts are easy enough for first-year students. If I had known about those sonatas when I was a beginner on the violin, I would have found those sonatas preferable to the usual fare. I suggest this book for violin teachers.

--Many keyboard sonatas are short and easy. Surely many students would find these sonatas preferable to supercilious piano instruction books with song lyrics, programmatic titles, and illustrations. I suggest this book for piano teachers.

--There have been a few sonatas composed which depict drum rolls, bugle calls, military marches, and gunfire heard during a battle. "The Battle of Prague" by Franz Koczwara and "The Fourth of July" by James Hewitt are outstanding examples. I suggest this book for music appreciation teachers.

                Just two complaints:

--He uses unfamiliar words which he does not define. One can only guess from the context that the "empfindsan" style is more profound than the "galant" style. He refers frequently to "the Mannheim school," which had a distinct style which he would not describe. I cannot eveb find "epigonic" in the dictionary.

--The author sometimes appears snobbish. On page 131, he says, "Every serious reader will have his complete Beethoven sonatas at hand." Any violin student who does not practice the Kreutzer etudes (540) and the Rode etudes (541) is not a "serious violin student."

Renegade Legion is, of course, long since gone, but Battletech still thrives, and one of the most consistent sellers are these, the tech readouts. And this was the first.

Well, not really. See, the original 3025 readout had a bevy of 'Mechs you'd seen in other media, particularly Robotech (say, the Marauder, Warhammer, Locust, etc.). Then, a few years ago, FASA was embroiled in a lawsuit over the use of the images, and things went poorly. So, FASA can't put any more images of the contested 'Mechs in any product.

And so was born the 3025 Revised Readout. All affected 'Mechs were excised, and replaced with Level 1 versions of the old Star League 'Mechs (like the Thug, the Black Knight, Flashman, etc.). Background is inserted to make it seem like they've been there all along, and while there are still some mentions of the old 'Mechs (like Barber's Marauder 2s, a mercenary regiment), we'll never see the old ones again.

I give this a four because it is still the introductory readout, and pretty good. If you can get the original, you should...but it's going to be very hard to find now, as they made the changes several years ago. But this is definitely a book you want to have if you play Battletech.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tech readout.......1999-07-18

I loved this book the first time I had it. Not only did it cover the Overviews, capabilities, and variants of the mrchs, It also gave short personallity listings of some of the pilots (one of the things I miss in the newer tech readouts). Although it doesnt have some of the older mechs like the Mackie and the King crab, It does have mechs like the Warhammer and Marauder (My favorite)!

                          5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed.......1999-03-04

The book is very good. The last thing I needed before starting my game. I saw some complains about missing mechs. Well, from what I saw, all the missing mechs are in the Boxed Set (2nd edition at least)and probably for that reason were exchanged for Star-league mechs (mech that we saw in, for exemple, Mechwarrior:Merceneries and didnt have a clue of where they came from). Several Thumbs up for it. Would be just great is it had a adapted 3025 mech choice list for mechwarrior games somewhere

                          4 out of 5 stars pretty good.......1999-02-17

It's a good book, except for the mechs that FASA left out. It's a really good book if your playing a game with little to no funds to by expensive mechs. However the older ones were better. If your got a orginal 3025 or the older one, i'd love to talk to you.

3 out of 5 stars Don't buy this one if you have the original........1999-01-07

This is the second edition of Technical Readout: 3025. The original (with the cut-away marauder on the cover) is now out of print. Frankly, I'm not too impressed with the revised edition. Although they have streamlined the text, this one little plus doesn't makeup for what they have taken out. Missing from the revised edition are any mention of 20 or so different types of 'mechs that did appear in the original edition. These include such classic models as the Locust, Wasp, and Stinger, the Shadow Hawk, Griffin, and Wolverine, and the Archer, warhammer, and Marauder. In place of these missing models, they have substituted an equal number of "dumbed-down" Star League-era 'mechs. The 'mechs they have included are the same ones that appeared in Technical Readout: 2750, which is also out of print. As Battletech is a game that can be played in any game-timeperiod (from the invention of the battlemech up to the distruction of the clans), these omitions are not to the benefit of the player. For players new to the game, your best bet is to try and find the out-of-print original edition at a used bookstore. If you don't, you'll never see the missing designs again.

Beware which version is purchased! I purchased a "new" copy of version 4. (The version number was not advertised.) The current version number is 8 and it appears to be only available from the current publisher, McGraw Hill as an $85- paperback. If you are not taking a class the older version may be ok but I am in a class.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on financial analysis.......2007-01-04

I am in the financial services field and a self learner, too. I wanted this book for my business library and to help me brush up on financial analysis. This book did not disappoint me. It is very well written, although I would recommend a newer edition.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book on Analysis for FM.......2006-04-08

It is one of the best books I have ever used for course reference. One of the reviewers (on the back cover) taught me the Corporate Finance course at HBS with this book as the reference text and it was a great learning experience. I also find this book as a great reference material for my CFA exam. Can't wait to get my hands on the next edition.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent introductory text.......2006-01-04

Unlike most textbooks the book by Higgins can actually be an engaging read. It doesn't get into too many technical details on any of the subject matters covered, but includes some interesting sections that I haven't found in other general (and much heavier) financial management books. For instance, I liked the appendix on the venture capital method of valuation and the explanation on how venture capitalists arrive at a required percentage ownership given multiple rounds of financing.

It was used as a background text for a case study course that I took as part of an MS in finance program and I believe most of us enjoyed it..

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Finance.......2005-11-20

Great book for my introduction to finance. This is what the professor in my MBA program used. The book is easy to read and the author has a self-deprecating sense of humor to boot.
