Book Description

Trademarks of the '40s and '50s is a portfolio of over 450 striking trademarks and logos. Some familiar, all innovative, these designs reflect the tastes and obsessions of growing sophistication in the science of marketing. New industries -- television, jet aircraft, and nuclear technology -- appear in the trademarks as well. This book will appeal to a wide range of readers, from nostalgia buffs and collectors of Americana, to a growing audience of commercial artists and graphic designers who will find creative new ideas in these timeless designs.

4 out of 5 stars retro for me.......2000-08-31

if not just to look at the development of the corporate identity of various well known companies (and some that haven't changed!) then you surely need this book just for your retro-fixation... i know i did anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and beautiful book of trademark art.......2000-08-16

In this age of computerized clip-art, the works housed in this collection may not be as impressive - or perhaps surprising - as they were at its 1988 publication. Still, the beauty of these trademarks and the cleverness of their design are both a pleasure to view and and a source of inspiration. By pulling these logos out of their sublimated context and displaying them front and center, they turn into works of art.

Baker and Blik have gathered together a wide range of logos, including some very familiar (The Pep Boys, Zig-Zag, Elsie the Cow), and many more hopelessly obscure - but no less fascinating. And by organizing around themes, the reader can get some ideas as to how themeatic elements came and went with the years.

A nice coffee-table or bathroom book that is also at home on a graphic designer's bookshelf.

Book Description

Embellished with incredibly sophisticated gold, silver, and silk patterning, the refined ceremonial textiles of the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra are often so complicated that even a highly skilled weaver can complete only a few centimeters in a full day at her loom. Motif patterns woven into these exquisite cloths reflect the Minangkabau adat ñ the indigenous ideology that prescribes roles for all activities and speech. In this lavishly illustrated volume, 13 contributing authors--9 of them Minangkabau--consider ceremonial dress, motifs, fibers, patterning techniques, traditional architecture, ceremonies, jewelry, music, dance, literature, and historiography.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and comprehensive.......2004-03-03

This is a coffeetable book about the Minangkabau of West Sumatra. Though the exhibition was about textiles, the book is more comprehensive with articles on history, architecture, food, literature, etc. by leading experts -- including a couple of Minangkabau academics (Usman and Anwar) who died as the book was going to press.

The photos are excellent. Production is top-notch. And the price is substantially discounted since there are so many remaindered.

The best introduction to the Minangkabau culture.

Book Description

A super-sexy Marilyn Monroe leads off Volume 2 - drawn as only Frank Frazetta could draw her! Monroe appears in all 12 panels of the first 1956 Sunday, setting the pace for the next two sizzling years. Highlights for Volume 2 include: Al Capp's legendary parody of busybody "Mary Worm" led "Mary Worth" creator Allan Saunders to reciprocate, casting Capp as a drunken and loutish cartoonist in his strip. The ruckus made a national scene, including Time magazine. Others skewered are gay pianist Liberace, bald actor Yul Brynner, voluptuous actress Jayne Mansfield, and actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly marrying the Prince of Monte Carload. Regular cast members with plot time include Evil Eye Fleeglem, Hairlessd Joe and Lonesome Polecat, Moonbeam McSwine, and uber-capitalist General Bullmoose. Contains an introduction and extensive annotations by "Li'l Abner" expert Denis Kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars Comics Junkie.......2007-07-31

Grew up reading this series. Now I have a permanent copy of my own. Good price and great product for comics junkies.

5 out of 5 stars How Sweet It Is!.......2007-01-03

How sweet it is to sit down and read these comics from the 1950's- it's like a miniature journey back into the past where sexism, politcal correctness and all the sociological baggage we lug around today did not exist. It's like opening a window and letting in a fresh breeze that tickles your lungs and makes you laugh!

5 out of 5 stars Thank goodness for Frazetta's reputation, this has Marylin Monroe.......2005-12-07

Lil Abner always had a strong fan club that allowed the reprinting of the daily strips by Kitchen Sink press for about 25 volumes, which if there was no fan base, only one or two volumes would have been published.

In addition,we are very lucky that Frazetta's reputation and fan club would allow the printing of a comic strip that John Steinbeck once stated, its author, Al Capp, should be given the Putszler (excuse the spelling) prize.

Al Capp was a master satirist and storyteller, who would have one acclaim like Mark Twain or O'Henry if not for the snob attitude toward comic strips.

This is shown here. The 50-year-old color strips are re-printed in a fine manner with expert commentary about the period they were written in by Denis Kitchen.

This is the only full color page spread of Marylin Monroe in Lil Abner.

Beware, they feature "politically incorrect" well-endowed women, and one main character, Daisy Mae, as mostly submissive, which would not be allowed in comic strips today as it would raise the ire of feminists and other "progressive" people.

On the other hand, it features the two main male characters, Abner and Pappy, as idiots or wimps, Abner and his brother Tiny as "hunks", and the one of the main women characters, Mammy as the leader of the Yokum clan, who occassionally beats Pappy, which are allowed in comic strips today as the "Progressives" seem to have no problem with this.

Remember, vintage comic strip reprints do not generate big bucks, some even lose money. They are produced out of great admiration for the strips, and we should be grateful for the publishers for doing so.

By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.

Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews

5 out of 5 stars The Hills are Alive.......2004-07-03

This is the second volume of Li'l Abner Sunday strips drawn by future king of fantasy art Frank Frazetta. I have be honest and admit that in my opinion Li'l Abner is the greatest American comic strip of all time. So, my opinion is not exactly unbiased. Naturally, I loved this book. Many people have the opinion that the strip went downhill after Li'l Abner and Daisy Mae got married. That may be true, but it was a slow descent down that hill, and the strip was still great in the mid 1950s. The scripts are hilarious and the Frazetta art is beautiful (although drawn in the style of Al Capp, not his own style). I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in classic American comic strips.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Material Puts Modern Comics To Shame!.......2004-02-27

Finally! Although one may quibble over some technical details ( the strips might have been printed a bit larger, and the color is a bit muddy in spots, ) there's no denying that publisher Denis Kitchen is performing a service to mankind by making these historic strips available again - for the first time in almost 50 years.

Al Capp was at a creative peak in the 1950's, the heyday of his uber cool American satiric masterpiece: LI'L ABNER, and these classic Sunday page sequences don't disappoint. For many people, this was their first exposure to Frank Frazetta's work, and he managed to capture Capp's idiosyncratic style with the greatest of ease, adding many brilliant, characteristic nuances of his own along the way.

With the demise of the late, lamented Kitchen Sink Press a few years back, I despaired of ever seeing this classic material back in print again - but here it is! It's impossible for gen X-ers weaned on tripe like Dilbert and Foxtrot to even begin to imagine what a rich source of art and humor the American comic strip used to be in the 30's, 40's and 50's.

For anyone interested in re-visiting a Golden Age of this uniquely American art form, you couldn't ask for a better place to start than this. Hopefully the series will be continued before and beyond the Frazetta years - into the forties and sixties. And while we're at it, how about a color POGO Sundays collection, Mr. Kitchen?

2 out of 5 stars Not that funny.......2002-11-07

There are some gems in here, but not enough. The letter written by Groucho Marx is great, you can hear his voice in it. About two-thirds of the way through I got tired of wading through the muck to get to laugh-producing material, and gave up. I understand that this is not a joke book, but I just thought it would be funnier.

5 out of 5 stars genuinely funny.......2000-06-18

Humor being a matter of taste, it's difficult to find a collection that actually works. Russell Baker's collection really does accomplish what it sets out to do: "to make you laugh, or at least smile, or maybe just feel a little more interior warmth despite 'the situation'" (from the introduction). Running the gamut from sheer looniness to literary parody, and containing vintage material as well as contemporary items, this is a wonderful collection of items to lighten things up.

                Book Description

Howard Hawks (1896-1977) is one of America's great film directors. During a career that spanned fifty years and produced more than forty films, this writer, producer, and director made highly successful movies and managed to maintain remarkable artistic control during a time when studio moguls usually ruled. Hawks conquered virtually every genre, including action/adventure, comedy, western, film noir, gangster, science fiction, and musical films.

The remarkable diversity of his work may have kept Hawks from being as easily recognized as his contemporaries Alfred Hitchcock and John Ford. Hawks brought a unique stamp to all of his films by mixing dramatic and comedic elements, manipulating gender conventions, emphasizing story and dialogue, and eschewing cinematic trickery and sentimentality. His classic oeuvre includes films such as Scarface, Only Angels Have Wings, His Girl Friday, Sergeant York, Bringing Up Baby, The Big Sleep, Red River, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Rio Bravo.

This collection of interviews takes the reader from talks with his admirers in the French press to revealing discussions late in his life. By his own admission, Hawks was above all a storyteller. These interviews overflow with entertaining anecdotes and embellishments. Howard Hawks: Interviews is a diverse collection offering valuable access to the life and career of one of the most fiercely independent filmmakers in the history of Hollywood.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Grey Fox in Winter.......2007-09-01

I have read many books on Hawks, and I enjoy "Hawks on Hawks," very much.

This book, however, turned out to be interesting in a surprising way. Most of these interviews come from the late Sixties and early Seventies, when Hawks' career was ending. You can see Hawks putting a brave face on his late work, glad for the chance to be working, but once his career is over, he assesses those films very clearly. Also of interest is that the book shows how the first generation of film students came to Hawks, seeking his input on the political struggles of the era and the emerging women's movement. Seeing the clash between their expectations and Hawks' opinions is almost a movie in itself.

Also, Hawks expresses himself vigorously about other directors, something I hadn't really seen before. (He is especially harsh on post-WWII Capra.)

So even if you have read "Hawks on Hawks," "Howard Hawks Inteviews" will surprise you and give you a fuller portrait of the man behind all those terrific movies.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Interview Books.......2002-09-04

Even if you have seen Hawks interviewed on "The Men Who Made the Movies," or have read other interviews with him, HAWKS ON HAWKS is still quite interesting and enjoyable. If you need to understand the essence of Hawks quickly, this is the book to read. We get Hawks' account of his career, the moguls he dealt with, the stars he liked and disliked, his thoughts about movies after he became inactive. Todd McCarthy's Howard Hawks The Gray Fox of Hollywood is a more thorough portrait of the man, and it is good to check Hawks' stories against the research in that book, but HAWKS ON HAWKS is still very charming.

                5 out of 5 stars A True Master.......2000-07-04

Overlooked for years by the Hollywood establishment, today Howard Hawks is remembered as one of the cinema's greatest artists. The candid interviews contained in this book are funny, insightful and just plain enjoyable. Hawks discusses Bogart, Wayne, Bacall, and numerous other actors he worked with during his career, as well as commenting on his most famous films including Red River, The Big Sleep, and Bringing Up Baby. Especially noteworthy are the sections where he discusses the "Hawksian Woman", the Western and his fellow director and friend John Ford. A must for Hawks' fans.

I had forgotten all about this book but when I happened to see it here I thought I'd write a few words about it. My Dad spent the better part of 6 years studying this book in the 1960's because he had a friend that was very successful using it. It is/was written by Mozan in very broken English & difficult to understand. He became very good at picking winners using ONLY this book (he had no other interest in horse racing). Overall he was at about the 75% to 85% win range. Every once in a while you run into a special day when all the numbers line up & on those days he would go car shopping & pay cash with his winnings!

3 out of 5 stars The Chaldean System of Numbers.......2001-06-30

This book was written by "Mozan" aka C.M.Shah, in the 1930's. If you are a racing fan without a "system" this book may help you in choosing your horses. Be prepared, though, to spend some time in learning this system. The author was from India and wrote this book on the Indian system of betting, so be prepared to convert the Indian "symbols" to the American "symbols" for the races. After you have learn this part of the system, then you will need to learn how to convert the names of each horse in the race to numbers. After you become proficient with the conversion of names into numbers, you may need, most likely, at least 15 to 20 minutes to do each race. The author claims a winning rate of at least 80% per race day. The book has chapters covering the following: Numerical values of the alphabet; how to find the name value; how to work up a race; ruling figure of the day; a race fully worked up; abbreviations; etc. The book is broken down into two parts, part one covering 10 chapters, and part two covering 13 chapters. It has 90 pages. He lists many sample races from India. There are several charts that help with the initial learning steps. This book is definitely for horse racing fans who are willing to go that extra step for a possible big payoff. Be warned, though, it is a time consuming step. If this isn't a problem for you, then you may enjoy learning from this book.

Practical tools and expert advice for professional event planners

Before planning an event, there is much that must be done behind the scenes to make the event successful. Before any thought is even given to timing or location of the event, before the menus are selected and the decor designed, there are proposals to be written, fees and contracts to be negotiated, and safety issues to be considered. This book takes you behind the scenes of event planning and explains every aspect of organizing and strategic planning. This book will be of value to both the professional event planner and to clients who are dealing with planners.

Its comprehensive coverage includes: how to prepare winning proposals, and how to understand them if you are the client; how to determine management fees; negotiating contracts; safety issues; designing events in multicultural settings; and new technology that makes operations more efficient (such as online registration and response management, database project management tools). The book also includes practical tools such as sample letters of agreement, sample layouts for client proposals, forms, and checklists. Professional event planner Judy Allen offers first-time or professional event planners all the top-class advice they need to make their special events come off without a hitch.

Planning a corporate party or special event? Don't lift a finger until you've read The Business of Event Planning. In this highly practical book, author Judy Allen covers every aspect of the process in exhaustive detail. Allen, an author, writer and experienced event planner, contends that events are more than just feel-good activities. Events, she says, must be staged as strategic tools with return-on-investment potential. If you want to know how, she covers all the basics. Even though the book is geared toward large events, the principles can be applied to functions of any size. Allen includes details of proposal writing, itineraries, contract negotiations, fee setting, high tech applications and security concerns in a post-September-11 world. We recommend this logistical guide to corporate staffers or event planners who want to master the fine details.

With a strong endorsement from Susan Fenner Ph.D, Manager, Education and Professional Development, International Association of Administrative Professionals, Allen strives to teach the how-tos of planning special events. This incredibly detailed profession has been known to send any number of otherwise level-headed individuals screaming and dashing for the exits.

Yet, with Allen's assistance and Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired, which explains the promotions side of events, both a newcomer and an experienced professional can benefit from this book.

Well-written, this book may save many a person from high blood pressure.

I would also recommend Guerilla PR Wired by Michael Levine along with this book. These two cover the basis for PR and events planning.
