5 out of 5 stars Concise reference work on this collectable topic.......2000-03-19

Kreider's work on collectable valentines is one I reach for often when doing research on vintage cards. She provides an extensive history of the topic, a good glossary, and the book is crammed full of excellent photos of a wide range of samples. The only problem with it is that the prices shown do not reflect the influx of vintage valentines onto the various online auctions sites, and so seem a bit high. Otherwise, it's quite a good buy.

        Book Description

For years, doll and costume enthusiasts alike have seized every opportunity to view the authentic period ensembles created by John Burgidge, former bridal designer for the prestigious Priscilla of Boston. Titled Les Petites Dames de Mode ("the little ladies of fashion"), this collection of Victorian and Edwardian gowns worn by 29-inch mannequins has been displayed in prominent museums throughout the country and was the subject of a video produced in the 1990s. Not until now has the entire collection been presented in print. Featuring full-page photos of each gown, with close-up views of important details, accompanied by the designer's extensive notes on the creation of each piece, this book will be appreciated and treasured by doll collectors, costume historians, clothing designers and fashion aficionados.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful inspirations.......2007-07-18

This book by Mr. Burbidge is a feast for the eyes. The book features dozens of 29-inch fashion dolls wearing costumes from the 1850s to around 1914. Being oversized dolls, each costume can have incredible detail. Mr. Burbidge has labored to create accurate period detail in each dress. Each doll is shown in a full-page picture with period hairstyles and accessories. Each accompanying page includes a description of the outfit, small inset pictures of close details, an interesting quote from historical sources about the time period and usually some tidbit about where the author found the material for the gown. Frequently the author will explain things about high society of the era and how certain items would be viewed - for instance, whether a gown would be considered racy because of its color or how young ladies didn't wear expensive jewelry with a gown until after they were married.

There are only 2 things that I found lacking about this book and they are really trivial items in my mind. The first is that the color of the full-page images is sometimes a bit "off". The dolls often feature very soft colors and the images have a warm tone that can wash them out. The inset detail shots usually have a better color representation.

The second is that the reader should not expect accurate period undergarments on the dolls. The crinolines and petticoats are fairly accurate, but there are no corsets shown.

All in all, the book is beautiful and informative. If you didn't know better, you would almost think the images were of full-size mannequins dressed in real period costumes. And the accompanying text is suitable for anyone, even if they have no knowledge of the eras shown.

5 out of 5 stars An Error Bygone, Miniatures and Fabulous Tailoring.......2007-06-12

If you're into miniatures, or just fabulous seamestry, you will love this book and this man's work with textiles, and fashion of a romantic era like none you've seen. These are fashions we will never see again in our society, (thank goodness - can't imagine wearing this stuff). But at the same time, I love to see how elegant and fabulous ladies looked in these garments. This man was responsible for making some of the most fabulous wedding gowns in our country for over a decade and now has preserved for us a fashion era that won't be brought back in it's entirety ever again. A must see for those that are into preserving a culture and miniatures.

        5 out of 5 stars A Very Special Book.......2007-05-15

This book is a total delight for fans of couture, especially La Belle Epoch. Nothing will compare to seeing the exquisite Les Petites Dames in person, but this book comes close! I was fortunate enough to acquire some of these pictures when they were marketed in small groups, so I was thrilled to find that Mr. Burbidge had since expanded the collection and subsequently published it in its entirety (also the book goes into more detail). Just loved it!!

4 out of 5 stars Book for inspiration.......2007-05-12

I found this book very useful as a source for inspiration. Good quality pictures of very Victorian looking dresses. It is not a "how to" book, but if you have some experience in sewing, there you can find good ideas how it all must look then finished.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing costume dolls.......2007-04-12

Anyone who loves fashions of the Victorian/Edwardian era will be amazed at the details of these 29" dolls. Every accessory is perfect, richly illustrated.

        5 out of 5 stars Funny! A Good Book!.......2005-12-16

This is a really good book. It tells you a lot about teenagers and the life they lived back in the fifties. If you like Archie and his funny friends than you defintley want to get this book! Oh yeah, It's HILLARIOUS!!

5 out of 5 stars BASEBALL HOTDOGS, APPLE PIE & ARCHIE.......2005-05-20

Baseball, hotdogs, apple pie...but really, what is more American than Archie Comics? While Archie is now well into his seventh decade (and still looking ever the teen) perhaps the decade most associated with Archie Comics is the 1950's. It was the era of hot rods, Elvis, and malt shops and Archie and the gang were front and center. This is the second collection of Archie stories from the 1950's and this one prominently features Betty and Veronica as most of the stories are reprinted from the Betty & Veronica comic series. This collection features over a dozen stories and also has pin-up pages and cover galleries, displaying those wonderful covers from that bygone era. The love triangle between Archie, Betty and Veronica is in full vigor in most of these tales, as the girls alternately battle, and dump Archie.

Here are just a few of the stories in this latest Americana Series collection:

In "Model Date" from 1951, Betty and Veronica agree to both turn down Archie for a date the next time he asks to teach him a little humility. But then they learn that Archie is out with Jughead's cousin from New York. When the find out the model is a man, Veronica schemes to get a date with him. Then she gets a look at her `model date."

"Coat of Alms" 1955. When Betty is upset about her old clothes, Jughead goes on a quiz show and promptly wins her a new gown and mink stole. When she shows up at a dance, Veronica finds herself as the one envious of Betty's clothes for a change.

In "Kiss and Kill" from 1956, Betty and Veronica find out they are both going steady with Archie and want to kill him. But Jughead uses reverse psychology and tells the girls that it's all their fault that Archie loves them both because they are so beautiful. Jughead suggests a kissing contest to see who gets Archie.

"Rage Before Beauty" 1957. Sneaky Veronica `helps' Archie, Reggie, and Jughead pick out a birthday present for Betty by suggesting a hideous outfit in a department store window. Veronica was so convincing, however, that the plan backfires when the boys end up buying Veronica the awful outfit instead.

"Crest Fallen" 1958. When Veronica, Archie, and Reggie all trace their family trees back to European nobility, they begin acting snooty to everyone else. Miss Grundy takes them down a few pegs when her research uncovers the skeletons in each of their family's closets.

"Never Say Die" 1959. Veronica decides to fight fire with fire by changing her hair color to blonde to woo Archie. The battle of the hair escalates when both girls go red, only Archie doesn't like redheads!

Archie Comics is doing a great job in re-printing the classic tales as they transport you back to these prior decades with all the styles, jargon, and culture that went along with them. The Americana collection series is required reading for any Archie Fan. Wonderful, nostalgic fun!

If you're a fan of the Archie series you're definitely gonna wanna read this second book of 1950's highlights - a decade that many consider to be the 'high-point' of the series in terms of artistry. While the stories are mostly comprised of Archie-Betty-Veronica love triangles this time around the sheer nostalgia factor will definitely make this an enjoyable read no matter how long its been since you last read an Archie book.

4 out of 5 stars Nice sampling of 50s-era Archie Comics.......2004-01-31

I've loved Archie comics since I was a kid, so the "Americana Series" has been a lot of fun for me. Since they probably weren't anticipating doing a second volume of this when the first book was published nearly a decade ago. it's not surprising that the selection of stories isn't quite as good. Still, they're all classic Archie Comics.

This volume seems to focus mostly on Betty and Veronica, with Archie being little more than a supporting player in most of the stories and with Jughead existing to bail him out of trouble. It's interesting to note how much the characters have evolved over the years while the situation has remained the same -- Betty is the same sweet "girl next door" she always was, but she's not quite as despondant as she used to be. Veronica is still the spoiled rich kid, but she's softened a bit.

It would be interesting, once I've gotten the whole collection, to read the entire "Americana" series in one lump, just to see how much things changed over the years. I've got a new project to work on...

5 out of 5 stars Laugh Your Sanctified Brethren Butt Off!.......2002-02-21

        Where do I start?

(A pretty good impersonator of) Mr. Rogers tells little kittens everywhere that "when you get that special feeling inside, that means it's time to visit Mr. Litter Box" in the "Mr. Rogers Catbox Video".

Guy Noir, the sardonic private eye, makes yet another appearance (minus the wise-cracking, tongue-twisting Pete), being handpicked by an ex-con-turned-poet to publish some poetic parodies in the Paris Review, including a hilarious take-off on Robert Frost's "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening".

"Cold Weather" tends to cheer you up on those super-cold December evenings when the apartment has no heat (hopefully that's just me). Cold weather, according to Mr. Keillor can come in many forms including, but not limited to, your teenage son kicking you out of your own house because he's afraid of his friends coming over and finding the dad in the house.

"You come to New York looking for one thing, and you find another. And Bob Dylan and Carol Channing found each other," in this spoof of the young sixties generation livin' for today in New York City, hanging out with Truman Capote, Larry King, Kirk Douglas, Paul Harvey, and Mr. Rogers ("Found the mushrooms that were so amazing...right here in the neighborhood.").

"Little House On the Desert" is a guarantee side-splitter for any "Little House" enthusiasts out there, when Ma fakes tuberculosis in order to convince Pa to load up the wagon and get the heck out of Minnesota.

For Mother's Day, be sure to take your mom to "Mel's Big Boy Cafe" at the mall. Chewing is optional.

"Newt" is a toe-tappin' little tune about the former Speaker, which is sure to draw laughs from conservatives and liberals alike. Likewise, the Bemidji Boroughway [sic?] song provides a strong warning to ice-fisherman everywhere about the dangers of mistaking cigars, brautwurst, and dynamite.

I could go on and on and on about how great a collection of laughs this is, but I'll end my rambling with "Getting Older", my personal favorite from the three compact discs. This monologue warns us about the dangers of getting older: your grown children getting you as a present one of those stupid books about "the joys of aging"; similar to "Cold Weather", the teenage son lectures his dad on not dropping him off at the front door of school anymore; the vegetarian waitress goes ballistic when her patron orders "the 47-ounce beef-butt in the hot lard sauce" with french fries and butterbrickle ice cream.

In short (a little late for that), this collection has something for everyone.

Our family never took a road trip without this collection (back then it was on cassettes.) No one complained about long drives to grandma's because we all loved these hysterical skits and songs. My 4 children can now recite them all by heart and laugh all over again each time! I'm now getting them on CD for each of my kids so they can continue the tradition with their children. I was going to mention a favorite sketch but there are too many.

Ingmar Bergman is still the doyen of cinema. He is known for masterpieces of controlled human emotion, exploring every facet of the personality in relentless detail. He wrote: "I had the possibility of corresponding with the world around me in a language that is literally spoken from soul to soul."

These two screenplays, liberally illustrated with production stills featuring actors, including his favourite actress, ex wife, Liv Ullman, are classics of the screen. They will be sought after by film students, and lovers of his films, New interest in Bergman is being generated by the recent release of Faithless, Liv Ullman's 2001 masterpiece, with a screenplay by Bergman.

Born in Sweden in 1918, Ingmar Bergman is still contributing to his canon of work.

                Book Description

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was the quiet one, the tormented genius. A serious illness prevented him from becoming a pianist, but he fell in love with and in 1840 married Clara, the daughter of his teacher Friedrich Wieck against her father’s wishes. In 1843, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy appointed him lecturer in composition at the conservatory in Leipzig. A year later, the couple moved to Dresden. Then, in 1850, he became the Musical Director of the city of Düsseldorf. But his demons followed him wherever he went and he tried to kill himself by jumping into the Rhine four years later. He died two years later in a sanatorium.

                3 out of 5 stars Robert Schumann.......2007-06-10

An interesting account of the social mores of the times, particularly courting and marriage conventions , is woven into what is mainly a detailed description and analysis of Schumann's body of work. A musician's knowledge of composition is necessary if the reader is to fully appreciate the author's analysis of the Sonatas and Symphonies. If, like me, you just like listening to his music and don't have an expert knowledge of music theory, you will find parts of this book hard going. The book is very good when describing the methods of a working musician, for example, adaptations of the work of celebrated composers of the times (Bach, Brahms).
If you love Schumann's music ( a tad unfashionable these days as some of his music is a bit on the morbid side) you will to like this book.

                  Book Description

This candid, intimate, and compellingly written new biography offers a fresh account of Robert Schumann’s life. It confronts the traditional perception of the doom-laden Romantic, forced by depression into a life of helpless, poignant sadness. John Worthen’s scrupulous attention to the original sources reveals Schumann to have been an astute, witty, articulate, and immensely determined individual, who—with little support from his family and friends in provincial Saxony—painstakingly taught himself his craft as a musician, overcame problem after problem in his professional life, and married the woman he loved after a tremendous battle with her father. Schumann was neither manic depressive nor schizophrenic, although he struggled with mental illness. He worked prodigiously hard to develop his range of musical styles and to earn his living, only to be struck down, at the age of forty-four, by a vile and incurable disease.
Worthen’s biography effectively de-mystifies a figure frequently regarded as a Romantic enigma. It frees Schumann from 150 years of mythmaking and unjustified psychological speculation. It reveals him, for the first time, as a brilliant, passionate, resolute musician and a thoroughly creative human being, the composer of arguably the best music of his generation.

Top Notch guide, April 4, 2007

I'm not a very "hard core" gamer, in that I don't enjoy spending hours and hours and hours trying to figure out on my own some of the more esoteric wrinkles in the plot or game play of my PC games. If, after reasonable effort, I find I just can't get past a certain part of a game, I like to have a Strategy Guide to refer to so that I can get things moving along again ... my ego can take it. So if you don't mind asking for help now and then, this guide will give you all you need to overcome any deficit you might have as a medieval war planner. I didn't find any part of this game I couldn't handle with this guide in hand. Very nicely done !!

2 out of 5 stars Not Quite As Nice As The First Guide.......2004-05-11

Though this Guide has a new author than the Guide for the first game, it still does not offer any further insight to Crusader than did the original to Stronghold. If anything, this manual is even more lacking as it doesn't even include the 50 scenarios comprising the Crusader Trail, and offers no information on the new AI opponents you'll be going up against in the scenarios. Like the first guide, this is really nothing more than an expanded instruction booklet and not really necessary to getting the most out of Stronghold Crusader. Much of the introductory material is just a rehash of what was contained in the original, and coverage of the new features and campaigns introduced in Crusader is far less than what I would have hoped for when buying this guide. While Crusader as a game is a worthwhile sequel (and the Warchest version even more so), this accompanying Strategy Guide falls even farther short than the original guide.

Useless for beginners because it won't walk you through. Alot of experienced RTS players like me got stuck with Chapter 6 Victory King Arthur'campaign for a while until I figured it out on my own. Check it out, go to the said campaign in the book and you'll see he didn't say much. I doubt the author really played this game or if he does it's on the easy mode.
It's not any better than the instructions booklet that comes with the game.

A nice supplemental for the original release of Stronghold (the Warchest version of the game has included more maps), but not something you should feel that you need to have to play the game. This is more of an expanded instruction manual than anything else as there are really no "behind the scenes" info or secrets revealed about the game. It is nice in the fact that every map and scenario is discussed throughout the book, and the author gives his strategies for getting through each of them. Therein lies the problem, though, as more often than not, I was able to play and defeat each scenario using different tactics, and the only real help came from the author's run down of what to expect during the course of each mission. Those looking for more detail about the game or special hints or strategies will be disappointed by this book, as there are none forthcoming. Again, an interesting companion for the game and addition to the instruction booklet, but you certainly do not need to have this Strategy Guide in order to successfully play and enjoy the game to its fullest potential.

This is a good strategy guide for a good game. This book gives you a 2 page strategy for every level in the game. It has strategys for building and location for castles. Another good thing about this guide is that is has a table of every unit in the game with a discription, picture, and review of each too.

                                    Book Description

From the invention of interest in Mesopotamia and the origin of paper money in China, to the creation of mutual funds, inflation-indexed bonds, and global financial securities, here is a sweeping survey of financial innovations that have changed the world. Written by a distinguished group of experts--including Robert Shiller, Niall Ferguson, Valerie Hansen, and many others--and wonderfully illustrated with over one hundred color photographs of landmark financial documents (including the first paper money), The Origins of Value traces the evolution of finance through 4,000 years of history. Readers see how and why many of our most important financial tools and institutions--loans, interest rates, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, the corporation, and the New York Stock Exchange, to name a few--came into being. We see, for instance, how ancient Rome developed an early form of equity finance that resembles the modern corporation and read about the first modern corporation--the Dutch East India Company--and its innovative means of financing the exploration and expansion of European business ventures around the globe. We also meet remarkable financial innovators, such as the 13th century Italian Fibonacci of Pisa, whose mathematics of money became the foundation for later developments in the technology of Western European finance (and may explain why the West surpassed the East in financial sophistication). And we even discover a still-surviving "perpetuity" dating from the Dutch Age of Reason--an instrument that has been paying interest since the mid-17th century. Placing our current age of financial revolution in fascinating historical perspective, The Origins of Value tells a remarkable story of invention, illuminating many key episodes in the course of financial history.

3 out of 5 stars History of Money.......2006-10-13

This book is a kind of compilation of 20 chapters written by a number of different writers with each one being an expert in the time frame which they covered. The book was very informative about when and where in the world people started using money and financing to transact business. Starting in Mesopotamia with the first known transaction with interest around 1820BC. Then moving on through the Roman Empire and the first annuities to the first use of paper currency by the Chinese around 960AD. The origins of stocks and bonds are also covered along with many interesting facts about the fiancing that took place during the Revolutionary War. There is about 4,000 years of economic history represented in this book which a person interested in economics and history will find an interesting read.

William Goetzmann and K. Geert Rouwenhort have provide readers with a most wonderful work. Though clearly a wonderful coffee table book, I had to remove it from there due to IT becoming the center of attention in the room. The content is completely well done with beautiful photos and flowing prose. For those interested in gaining a keener understanding of how value developed as the economic force we all contend with today, take a look at this great work! Very well done indeed!
