Book Description

A magnificent history and an exceptional visual book on the most intriguing city in the world-newly translated and completely redesigned.

Steeped in a history of great loves, political intrigues, and fervent religiosity, Venice is one of the most romantic and magnetic cities of the world. The splendidly and profusely illustrated volume, newly translated and completely redesigned, tells the story of Venice through its art-during its period of grandeur as an independent city-state, from the eighth to the eighteenth centuries. Alvise Zorzi reveals the growth of Venice from a small fishing village to a bustling metropolis whose, cultural, political and economic dominance extended over the entire Mediterranean world.

In selecting the more than 340 full color illustrations, Zorzi has brought together a sumptuous collection of paintings and drawings, photographs and engravings. In addition, specially created diagrams explain the distinctive techniques and styles of Venetian architecture, ship-building and glass-blowing. A series of maps show the expansion of the city and its empire over the course of a thousand years, while charts describe the growth of Venetian commerce and manufacturing. These meticulous reproductions of the city's art bear witness to its cultural greatness.

Venice is a volume fit for the most discriminating coffee table and the most exacting library-a fitting tribute to the Queen of the Adriatic.

5 out of 5 stars Serenissima: Venice from an Insider's Vantage.......2003-12-20

VENICE 697 - 1797: A City, A Republic, An Empire is as satisfying an overview of the supreme city of Venice, Italy as is available. Other books may be more academically researched, written and presented and other books on the various aspects of this ageless city - its art, architecture, Carnivale expositions, idiosyncratic glass, music - are definitely more complete. But the primary reason for the success of this book is in the writing by Alvise Zorzi, a resident of Venice who treats us to a personal tour of what makes Venice so magical. Richly illustrated, wisely paced with interesting sidebars during the history portions, Zorzi relates the treasures of Venice with an endearing love that makes both known and new facts a joy to visit. At the end of this book he has created glossaries of terms, of the lineage of Doges, a fine chronology, and (with a tender bit of pride) a list of the Venetian Patriciate that of course lists existing families of noble birth as of 1999! Quite frankly Zorzi has the gift to crystallize the stages in Venice's development as a capital of Europe more meaningfully than other writers' compendia. We can only hope that he elects to present us with "Venice 1797 to 2004" and help us understand this enigmatic, slowly sinking jewel that has attracted lovers, poets, painters, musicians and writers for centuries from his present day stance. A beautiful book for any collection!

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful and informative book of Venice.......2003-01-26

There are many books available on the history of Venice, but there is probably no book as beautifully illustrated as this one. It contains many beautiful prints of paintings, sculptures, etc. as well as excellent photographs of the city. The book also provides a very good general overview of the history of Venice. The author is somewhat biased, by his own admission, about the "glory" of Venice and its history, and, thus, some degree of objectivity may have been lost in the telling of the history. Nevertheless, for anyone who is interested in Venice and its history, this book will provide many rewards.

            Book Description

In this third hilarious trade paperback Barry Ween's bringing monkeys! He is the world's smartest human being; his "big brain," has a limitless capacity for knowledge, and Barry has no problem putting that knowledge to use. That's pretty cool when you consider the fact that he's only 10 years old. Unfortunately, when you have that kind of smarts, trouble is nearly a foregone conclusion! Giant, talking gorillas from other dimensions; drunken, smelly clans of Bigfeet; and a germ-filled monkey looking to cause the next outbreak - these are things that Barry has come to accept as normal. Compared to such frightening childhood rites of passage as girls and the first school dance, Barry would take all three scenarios without blinking. This trade paperback collects the first three issues of Eisner-nominated creator Judd Winick's mini-series and features the debut of Bezeruul, the giant talking ape!

5 out of 5 stars This comic is in a class by itself.......2005-12-03

Barry's language may come as a shock to certain readers, but if you let that turn you off this book, you're doing yourself a grave disservice. Barry Ween is just about the funniest, most enjoyable read in comics, hands-down.

This collection finds Barry rescuing a giant gorilla from a zoo (at Jeremy's insistance), saving his schoolchums from an Ebola infected lab monkey (and shafting the lab jerks at the same time), and discovering the true culture of the Bigfoot. In each of these cases, Barry (with prodding from Jeremy) acts with compassion while putting himself at great risk, and, as a result, makes a friend in the simian category.

Barry, with his inestimable intelligence and impatience with dirtbags, always goes for the quick and dirty solution to a problem. But Jeremy, with his big heart and quivering lip, is always there to badger Barry into saving the monkey in distress. It is an irresistable combination of personalities, and this book is a worthy addition to the Barry Ween canon. Do yourself a favor, and buy it today!

1 out of 5 stars this is not WEEN.......2005-02-17

GO listen to some WEEN, this is a disgrace to the word WEEN

4 out of 5 stars Barry Ween, Friend to Apes.......2002-06-23

Barry Ween's at it again. Rather, the world around Barry is at it again, and the time has once again come for him to save the day, in one form or another. (It's tough being the world's smartest entity. It's even worse when you're a ten-year-old boy.)

First, Barry finds that the unusually large ape in the local zoo is not entirely what he seems. In the process of finding out exactly what's going on, Jeremy once again commits Barry to a course of action he otherwise would not have followed. But then, that's what Jeremy's there for, right? Once that crisis is averted, Barry must save his family from the terrors of the woods. (Haven't you always wanted to know the truth behind bigfoot?) And if that isn't enough, there's a school dance in Barry's future, and something about an ebola-infected monkey.

As with the rest of the Barry Ween series, this volume has all the craziness surrounding a foul- mouthed, world-dominating, charmingly insecure, arrogant, 10 year old genius and continues to hold on to those solid bits of humanity and sympathy that make Barry such a loveable character.

5 out of 5 stars Barry (and Judd Winick) does it again.......2002-01-16

Oh man... just when I thought the Barry Ween saga couldn't get any funnier, writer/artist Judd Winick somehow manages the impossible and gets me rollin' on the floor with even bigger fits of laughter than ever before. And I haven't even gotten beyond page four yet! Who knew a hyperactive ten-year-old's intricate & disturbingly gleeful descriptions of a rhino's restroom habits and monkey mating methods could be such an aneurysm-blowing yuk-fest?

Barry's third TPB outing features our titular ten-year-old genius and his slightly-thick sidekick Jeremy getting into all sorts of simian shenanigans. From helping a giant extradimensional gorilla get back home, to saving the `rents from a famished sasquatch, to racing against the clock to capture an ebola-infected lab monkey that crashes the school dance, Bar' and Jer' produce plenty of laughs with their profane banter and the bizarre predicaments they get into. Also included to help lighten the tone are scads of movie references, sex-ed jokes, the funniest take on the `tastes like chicken' cliché I've ever experienced, and other things you shouldn't laugh at, but do anyway!

Fair warning, though- be sure read this in the privacy of your own home. There's nothing worse than getting your hysterical laugh-on at the local comic-book shop and having the other geeks stare at you like you're some kinda weirdo (Now THERE'S a case of the pot callin' the kettle black if I ever saw one)! Trust me on this, I'm speaking from experience! (=)

                  1 out of 5 stars Bilious Bilgewater.......2007-07-28

I'm happy to see that I am not alone in my loathing, not only for the book under review, but for ANYTHING to emanate from the Princes Of Superciliousness at Rolling Stone.

First of all, let's look at the sub-title: "The Definitive Guide To The Best Of Rock-Pop-Rap-Jazz-Blues-Country-Soul-Folk & Gospel." OK. From that you might expect simply a compendium of the available albums of the major artists in any of the genres mentioned.

But no. The writers have to proceed to dump all over those artists whose music appealed to the masses [example: "His name synonymous with soft porn shlock, Tom Jones remains a phenomenon of pandering and a marketing triumph."], while extolling the virtues of spaced-out drug-culture icons like The Velvet Underground - who most definitely did not attract mass attention.

And that would be fine IF their book title included a further blurb along the lines of "and offering the very personal biases of the editorial staff."

This is to be avoided at all costs. You would be better served by any of the books from Joel Whitburn at Billboard.

As to what to do with my copy? Well, I recall Max Reger's response to a severe criticism of one of his works: "I am sitting in the smallest room of my house. I have your review before me. In a moment it will be behind me."

                  2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2005-10-13

I bought this book about 5 years ago because I thought it would have help me out to approach to new music, but it didn't. It's unbelievable that one of the most important music publications could have done such a thing. This convinces me that Rolling Stone magazine is not a publication about music, but just a publication about best selling records and artists, which are not always the best ones.
I just can't believe that this editors commissioned a Pop reviewer to write about Metal, Art Rock and Progressive Rock bands. What were they thinking? (that is if they were actually thinking).
There should have been at least 12 (hopefully more) reviewers divided by genres.
I would've give it one star if it wasn't for the fact that at least it gives you a "decent" list of the albums by an artist.
Overall I think this is not a good purchase.

                  4 out of 5 stars 1/2... A Standard in the Genre - A Personal Fave.......2005-08-27

I first purchased "The Rolling Stone Album Guide" back in '94 together with the "All Music Guide" edition of that year. I was a music-crazed, scatterbrained, hormonally-inflamed teen back then going through the turbulence of adolescence. I wasn't a reader then, but going through the pages of this book, browsing the snippets of reviews here and there, I was impressed and enthralled with the smart and memorable lines the talented reviewers would use to describe and stamp their collective marks on the artists and their recordings. Before the age of bilious Political-Correctness and mediocre music, this edition of Rolling Stone's ongoing music guide was a representative of it's time: an era of taste and quality matched with integrity and vision.

Here one can find some of the most apt and most sound criticism ever penned or typed for the printed page. And a collection of artists chosen for their merit, not popularity. Thus one will find praise for artists as diverse as Elvis, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, etc.. Rolling Stone started as a rag to chronicle and feature the Rock scene, hence the preponderance of Rock musicians in the book, but artists who influenced the course of Rock music and were influenced by it are well represented too: Robert Johnson, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Muddy Waters, etc., are given their equal tribute. Other genres are economically touched on, and Rap, Folk, Country, and others are given just due. The writings are some of the very best, balancing seamless lines between worship, accuracy, humor, scathing word-bites, pathos, and knowledge.

As admirable as this edition gets, there are some slips and tangles that come along, just like almost anything else. Some of the reviews are hilarious, perhaps inappropriately so (read the one on Gino Vannelli and laugh). Others are ridiculous, revealing the critics' prejudices and limitations (2 stars for Black Sabbath's "Vol.4"?. And the same for Slayer's "Reign in Blood"?.). And as one critic who I read from the net pointedly stated, somewhere along these lines, "Did they really listen to all of those recordings? What's with all of those old bluesmen all getting 5 stars?".

After the passage of more than a decade, I still go back to this model of music criticism. I still appreciate the brevity and wit with which Messrs. Mark Coleman, J.D. Considine, Paul Evans, and David McGee shared their talents and efforts for future music fans to revel and cherish only the best in Popular Music.

3 out of 5 stars An introduction to the most mainstream of rock criticism.......2004-07-13

This book, I must confess, was a guide to listening (together with subsequent "Rolling Stone" reviews) for many years.

On the whole, it has many virtues: the arguments are very sensible, the writers appear to be very well-qualified, and the selection of music included is varied enough to satisfy most listeners - especially someone like me who was looking then for music from the 1980s to listen to. There is very little outright lying: indeed most of the album reviews are very clearly written and do indeed provide an accurate description of the music being written about - something I wish I was able to do far better.

However, this book's age gives it one fatal flaw: it does not understand the real impact of music over a long period. Many albums I bought on its recommendation have proved quite useless to me even if I understood the reasons (though my narrow perceptions at that time can in no way have helped me).

Moreover, some of the albums it recommends (or at least does not condemn) would be violently condemned by critics like Joe Harrington and David Keenan whose knowledge and intelligence certainly exceeds that of those critics in this book. It is to them that I now recommend one turn for really accurate music criticism - I recommend their list to people who do not know much about msuic all the time. However, with older music I was never into back in the 1990s the book is actually more helpful and accurate due to greater hindsight, though many albums of great value were not then reissued.

Thus, read with great caution: this is introductory, but good for that. there is better criticism - the problem is finding it and seeing for yourself.

Excellent and good fun. The New York Dolls review sums up the tone of this guide nicely. Definitely not for the Top 40 crowd though. If you're one of them, stay away as you'll probably get somewhat insulted.
A drawback is that out of print albums were omitted, which makes the guide incomplete as soon as these albums are reissued. And of course the guide is outdated. Any guide is the moment is goes off to the presses.
That said, we want an update now.

Origin's The Second Age update to its Ultima Online massively multiplayer role-playing game world provides new territory to explore and new monsters to battle. In order to make sense of the game's new surroundings--and the many changes in Ultima Online (UO) since its inception--Prima's official guide to the game provides information on everything from basic statistics and skills to dungeon diagrams for the die-hard adventure seeker. The book provides a thorough breakdown of each of the key aspects of the game, including skills, weapons, and magic spells. Other topics of interest, such as player-owned vendors and player-run guilds, are also covered. A complete bestiary covers all of the original UO beasties, as well as the mysterious creatures to be found in the new lands. You'll learn all about Ophidians, Terathans, Titans, and Ostards, among others. The book also includes a graph explaining the game's complex reputation system, as well as a brief listing of some of the many "Easter eggs" you might find in Ultima Online.

A full-color map of Britannia and the new lands of The Second Age comes with the book. On it, you'll even find thumbnail guides to each of the many dungeons in the game. More complete maps of these underground caverns can be found at the back of the book. Lastly, the guide offers a complete listing of the gateways between the original lands of Britannia and the new lands of The Second Age. Simply put, this book is as valuable a resource to current UO players as the first UO guide was at the game's inception. Don't wander the new lands without it! --Michael Ryan

This book will help you on your way threw the roll-playing adventure that the makers of Ultima On-Line have created. Without this book there is a very big chance that you will get lost in the very large world of UO.

3 out of 5 stars Some Useful Information, But missing in many areas........1999-07-13

Paying an extra $15-$20 for a Guide, you would think that you would find answers to your questions. Too much editorial, not enough helpful hints. What do the switches in Covetous level 1 do? How many skill points in smithing do I need before I can smelt agapite ore? These are the questions that all of us face, but that nobody, most notably this book, have answered.

5 out of 5 stars Great For Starting an Old-School Server.......2007-05-02

For those who create their own servers using emulators such as RunUO, and hope to capture an old-school feel, this book is very useful at getting all the old stats and such down. Otherwise, its very out of date, and about 7 expansions behind...use only as a reference for a pre UO:R server, or to catch up on old times.

3 out of 5 stars Good Helping Hand.......2007-04-14

Ultima Online is dificult at first, it isn't really laid out for you like most MMOs, you just kinda do your own thing. Especially if you use UOgateway free survers it can be harder. At first I had trouble controlling my character. This book helped a lot, with maps and such. It's not essential, but if you need a push in the right direction I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Beware! Dont Buy this Book.......2000-06-05

Please do not embarass yourself by purchasing this book! All the info "was" usefull, but long since outdated. You are going to pay close to $16.00 for this piece of worthless material.

5 out of 5 stars For old times sake ^^.......2000-01-08

Hard to believe over two years has passed since UO came out. I got UO when it first came out, and this book was a great source of reference and info. Unfortunatly, nothing good lasts, and this is especially true of Ultima Online, where patches make much of the information here obselete. Oh well, a good memoir to keep of of the old times. If anyone has any questions or would like to reply, please send to Renryu@Hotmail.com thx.

3 out of 5 stars Holy Flamestrike! I think I am in Love!.......1999-08-05

My friend Ed and I bought this book after a fine purchase of the game itself. After being PKed and loosing everything we work so hard to get in the adventurous game of UO, we decided this book may be are one and only answer. Well it was! It told us everything we needed to know! We read and read our brains out until school was long forgotten. Even good old Mr. N couldn't save us. My friend and I were feeling like UO masters until... a new client patch came and changed everthing around in the game, so the book had all wrong and old dated information. That is why I gave this book 3 stars. It is a well developed book to give you help in the game but since Ultima Online constanly uses patches to change everything (in there view for the better), the book becomes a useless puchase. Right now the book has only map use that is acurate with the game.

2 out of 5 stars Nice but not very usefull.......2002-05-03

I play UO almost since the game is out and I have the two previous Prima's UO books. The last one was for The Secong Age which was the first expansion for UO.

When I bought the previous book I was disappointd to see that the content was the same except for some fiction which was lost and some more monsters.

Now with three more "updates" (Renaissance, Third Dawn and Lord Blackthorn's Revenge) which brought in two more worlds (Trammel/Fellucca and Illshenar), a faction system and many new other things the book would have seen a major overhaul.

                    Nope. Nothing. Nada.

The book has been "updated" and is still handy to have some good info on creatures, monsters or weapons and printed maps (which are few and too small)... The only section I found interesting was the chapter on previous background events and characters of Britannia and the other factes, but it is still too short for my taste. Another "bonus" is an interview with Todd "Spawn" McFarlan. A last and disappointing point is that no fold out map is included this edition of the book.

In the end I recommend this book to newcommers who don't own one of the previous books or to customers who like to have some printed references. If you surf often on the previous mentionned site and use the third party program UO Automap then this book is a luxury.

                    3 out of 5 stars It's ok, but..........2002-04-25

I'm a veteran player of UO, but it's nice to have reference materials around. This guide is pretty good. But I keep finding places where I wish it went just a bit further.

It gives information about tradeskills, but doesn't give you the practical walkthrough on how to actually use them. It has spell lists, but not the details on how exactly they work and how best to use them. It's not "hands on" enough for a complete beginning, but it's not detailed enough for a veteran.

It does have a pretty complete set of maps, but these are all available online through the UO Automap (which is included in the game CD thesedays). It does have the usual reference materials--what ingredients you need for what.

I guess I'd recommend buying it, at least if you have enough disposable income to not be concerned about it. But if you have one thing you can get with your [money] this week, this wouldn't be my choice.

5 out of 5 stars Great information for any player.......2002-03-26

This book has just about every detail you need to successfully play this game to its full potential. The maps and pictures are great and the information is well organized. This is a must for all UO players, Young or Veteran

                    5 out of 5 stars A Thorough Reference.......2003-03-24

This book is written like a textbook - starting with the most basic concepts - but moves on to discuss the tools and techniques of market analysis in considerable detail. Separate sections deal with residential, office and industrial, retail, hotels and resorts, and mixed-use developments. Case studies are given for each type of property. Technologies and data sources to assist analysis are discussed.

The two primary authors are a real estate consultant and an author/director of the Urban Land Institute. Many other professionals are listed as having contributed to the case studies.

The book includes an appendix of data sources of use to market analysts, a glossary of real estate terms and a thorough index.
