Book Description
Vietnam: Journeys of Body, Mind, and Spirit takes the reader on an informed and engaging journey into the social and ritual life of contemporary Vietnam. Created to accompany the first major collaboration between a Vietnamese museum and an American museum on an exhibition of Vietnamese culture, this book moves beyond the troubled wartime history of both nations to a deeper portrayal of how Vietnamese of different ages, ethnicities, occupations, and circumstances live at the start of the twenty-first century. The contributors--most of whom live and work in Vietnam, while others have spent many years in intimate association with Vietnamese life--offer a unique perspective on the country and its diverse cultural mosaic. The text is complemented by a rich collection of photographs and illustrations that capture the complexity and nuance of daily life.
The journeys portrayed in this volume cut across virtually every domain of Vietnamese experience. Some take place on roads, railways, rivers, and footpaths, as family members come home for the New Year and traders carry goods precariously balanced on bicycles. Others are metaphorical: life is a journey marked by significant rituals, and the year is a journey mapped by a calendar with holidays as milestones along the way. Souls travel to the netherworld, while gods and ancestors return to the human world during celebrations in their honor.
Although the Vietnam War dominated the consciousness of a generation of Americans, few understand the country and few can imagine what it is like today. Appearing more than a decade after Vietnam's entrance into the global market and more than a quarter century after the cessation of hostilities between the Vietnamese and U.S. governments, this book provides a new understanding of how Vietnamese live, work, and celebrate critical passages of life and time.

Vietnam: Journeys of Body, Mind, and Spirit .......2007-02-21
This is a great effort between an American and an Vietnamese museum to create an interesting book about culture and traditions among many of Vietnam's people. There are tons of photographs and information about the many minority groups as well as the national Vietnamese residents of this populous country. Holidays, ceremonies, and religions are covered in quite some detail. I learned a lot from this book.

For the last 40 years, Yves Saint Laurent has reigned as one of the most influential and brilliantly inspired couturiers of our time. Since Saint Laurent left Dior to open his own fashion house at age 25, his dramatic designs, emphasizing the body and a seductive elegance, have completely revolutionized women's fashion. This behind-the- scenes look at Saint Laurent's first year as an independent designer features outstanding photographs by Life photographer Pierre Boulat, many of which have never been seen before; an illuminating text by the designer's biographer, Laurence Benaïm; and inside commentary by Saint Laurent's partner, Pierre Bergé. This is an unprecedented portrait showing the hard work behind the fashion genius's early and meteoric rise.

Book Description
It's hard to believe we've known and loved the Pattersons for two decades. This lively family-Elly and John and their kids, Michael, Elizabeth, and April-has grown and changed, yet always retained its heartwarming combination of wit and wisdom. Through the years, this extraordinary clan has become like treasured relatives to millions of devoted fans. In Behind the Lines-the new collection that celebrates the strip's 20-year anniversary-For Better or For Worse creator Lynn Johnston takes us on a trip down memory lane, looking back over some of the strip's most memorable moments: Farley's heroics and death. Elly's concerns about aging. Michael's early days at college. Presented as a scrapbook, Behind the Lines includes a chapter for Elly, John, Michael, Elizabeth, and April, highlighting formative times in their lives. Johnston's commentary adds a behind-the-scenes element, as she describes some of her thoughts about the strip over the years. An abundance of her favorite color and black-and-white cartoons makes this must-have book a guaranteed winner with the strip's most ardent fans.

Another Winner!.......2007-08-08
I have read compilation books on For Better or Worse, but this is the treasure every FBOW fans should have in their libraries! Not only do we have comics in this book, but we also have chacter profiles, and a bit of background on the real life people Lynn Johnson based her comic characters on! A must have for Johnson fans!
Times changing.......2005-10-14
This has got to be one of america's best comics EVER!!!! I just love for better or for worse, because you see the characters growing up and changing, and it makes me think of the good old days when i was little. I highly recommend it!
Lynn's BEST of the FBOFW ANNIVERSARY books........2005-08-28
This book is a MUST for any diehard fan. It contains in its pages details and answers to questions that have always wandered in your mind as your read her strip each day. (Why does Candace have such issues? How are Phil and Georgia doing? Why happened to Annie and Ellie's friendship?) How does Lynn do it? Well, in this book she uses narrative and art to flesh out details that just won't fit into 5 panels Mon-Sat strip. With this book, it's like you just bought a house next to the Pattersons and Ellie has invited you over for a coffee and a good gossip to fill you in on the goings on in the neighborhood.
Enjoy!
A Must For Any Lynn Johnston Fan.......2005-08-22
Though a college student at the time and money was scarce, I skimped and saved and managed to order a copy of this book right after it came out about six years ago. Once it was in my hands I sat and delightedly read it start to finish in one long, chilly New England day. What a wonderful memory...
This book, released to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of For Better Or For Worse, is much more than an anthology or trip down memory lane, it is a revelation of the lives that Lizzie, Michael, John, Elly and the gang have going on beyond what we're told in the comic strip each day. Oh, sure, someone is probably reading this and thinking, "these are fictional characters and have no lives, either in the daily paper or beyond it." Right? Well...let's say they do. For instance, I was tickled to learn of a secret crush Lizzie had as a teenager that was never revealed in the strip (I won't say for whom) and I liked hearing that Phil and Georgia, scarcely seen in the strip in a decade, were still married and doing well, and that most of the families mentioned at one point or another in the neighborhood remained around. I also found it a real treat to have the hsitory of how John and Elly met, roughly a decade before the strip began, told in the form of an illustrated story. (How young they both looked back then!) Okay, I admit it, having followed this family for most of my life (it came out, I believe, the year I was born) they do seem like real people to me, and I mean that as a tribute to the talent of Lynn Johnston.
The title of this work really says it all, and if you're a FBOFW fan who wants to find out more of the personal history of each member of the Patterson family, then this is where to go.
A Book for Fans.......2002-05-06
If you are a fan of For Better or For Worse, you will love this book because it tells you how Johnston's real life entertwines with the comic strip. I got it for Christmas and before the end of the day I was finished it. It has great stories and insights into how Lynn Johnston writes her comics.

A person is not a human-doing........2007-07-03
I didn't have a problem with this book; in fact, I enjoyed it. It was a little deflated because it was not filled with all the normal tripe you read about Judy Garland's personal life. It's not easy to syphon-off the personal from the professional in Judy's life. This book made that attempt, and I'm okay with it. Sometimes the lite-touch is sufficient. We don't need to know about how many times Judy dunked her head in a toilet. I think, if Judy had lived to talk about her days in rehab, or what have you, she would have preferred to be remembered as someone who gave her everything to the fans. And she would have told the tripe-writers to buzz-off. I think Judy would choose this book to represent herself, uh-huh! At the end of her life, she was fed-up with hype. I think this book offers a simple, uncomplicated profile of an extremely intense life in the eye of the public. By the end of her life, when she was putting in phone calls to President Kennedy for validation and approval, it must have occurred to her that the personal is political. She experienced this downfall with her TV show, and was somber.
This collection is more focused on her long-time career, with excellent, clear photos, outlining the years of her performances, movies and concert projects. So from that angle, it could be anti-climatic. But I found it to be a light, entertaining read that left no heaviness. Something you could sit and drink your coffee with. It's a fun book for the serious collector.
Poorly Written Garbage!.......2006-04-27
This is a terribly written book! The inaccuracies have already been addressed by others, so I won't repeat them. Suffice to say the inaccuracies became so numberous, I stopped reading at page 38. Did the writers even bother to research anything? Was the editor asleep? Nice pictures, but don't bother buying this turkey.
A vicious piece of garbage.......2005-04-25
Obviously the authors are ripping off Judy's name for the money. What other excuse can there be for writing this piece of crap? At first I was happy to see another Judy book hit the market - especially one with such lovely photos. But after I started to read it, I was horrified. As I browsed through the text, I got sick. I am shamed to even admit I have this book in my collection. What a vicious piece of garbage! And these authors have the nerve to say they love Judy...
have just bought the book.......2004-01-05
I ordered this book from the store and am getting it tomorrow (tuesday 6th jan 04). I am now very dissapointed that i ordered this book because after reading everyones reviews i feel i have wasted money on it and i havent even read it yet.
when i go to collect this book and i am going to order the lorna luft book that everyone keeps recommending.
I was very much looking forward to reading this book but now i dont think i can be bothered.
i loved judy garland dearly. i am only 16 and think she was such a wonderful actress and one of the best singers i think i have ever seen. I would like to apologise to everyone that the writers of this book are british (atleast i think they are... thats what someone said) and would also like to point out that not all brits are like that and many of us love judy garland as much as all other fans.
may you rest in piece judy!
My opinion of this book? LET THERE BE SILENCE!!!.......2002-09-09
I have worshipped Judy 4 25-26 years! Her legacy is astounding - and she continues 2 enrich my life!
This book(I WON`T EVEN MENTION THE WRITERS NAMES) is like dancing or spitting on Judy`s grave. There are 2 many numerous faults - in this book - worth mentioning....
The photographs are good, but years and their origins are 2 often wrong....
Please! If I were the publisher I would withdraw it from circulation. Liza, Lorna, Joey and Sid have plenty AMMUNATION for a lawsuit....
This book makes me cry! The authors HAVE NO SYMPATHY for its subject whatsover....
If u wanna read how CRUEL persons can be 2 other people; READ THIS TRAVESTY....
Book Description
A characteristic feature of Wagnerian and post-Wagnerian opera is the tendency to link scenes with numerous and often surprisingly lengthy orchestral interludes, frequently performed with the curtain closed. Often taken for granted or treated as a filler by audiences and critics, these interludes can take on very prominent roles, representing dream sequences, journeys and sexual encounters. Combining studies of individual musical texts with an investigation of the critical discourse surrounding the operas, Christopher Morris investigates the implications of these important but strangely overlooked passages.

Book Description
From Hollywood to fashion circles to knitting circles on college campuses across the country, knitting is the hippest new skill around and is practiced by millions of people. Combining the best of two great worlds, The Knitting Goddess consists of 10 chapters, each offering a fascinating story of an ancient goddess, which is then applied to a basic knitting technique or simple pattern. Learn, for instance, about Isis, the mother goddess of Egypt, and knit a red stole that grants power to its wearer. Other stories and projects include Athene and a scarf called a smoke ring, Penelope and a warm beautiful sweater, and more. Wonderful for beginners as well as the more advanced knitter, this one-of-a-kind approach to knitting will teach readers not only how to master the craft, but will also entertain, inspire, and inform.
Customer Reviews:
A knitting book to curl up with.......2006-04-05
This book is not just a knitting book--it is one to curl up with and read--the myth adaptations are so much fun. Personally, I love the purple ink, too--this is a fun, informative book. I think, as another reviewer mentioned, this was "the book that started it all"--the Knitting Goddess was one of the "forefront" books when the current knitting craze began.
Deborah, will we ever have another book from you--maybe a companion/sequel to The Knitting Goddess? Though it's been many years now since the Goddess was published, you have many fans and I wonder when we'll hear from you again. I enjoy this writer's work so much that I also bought her Inner Voyager personal journal/workbook--another gem. I hope Deborah is happily knitting, wherever she is--and I hope she graces the knitting world with another lovely book one day.
Nice fiber stories, horrible knitting teaching.......2005-07-26
If you're interested in an assortment of fiber-related mythology, this book has plenty. If you are a lover of New Age, you'll love this book. If you want to learn to knit, run - don't walk - away from this book.
The following are several typical examples of why this book does such a terrible job teaching basic knitting.
To cast on, it tells you to make a slip knot, but doesn't tell you how. The illustrations do not show a slip knot, but show something that will end up as a simple loop on the needle. It works, but the beginner had to work too hard to get that simple loop, and now has a false idea of what a slip knot is.
The first piece of knitting the author steps you through is a garter stitch swatch. In the middle of making this swatch, you are presented with an illustration on how to pick up dropped stitches, but the illustration is of a stockinette stitch swatch. You will never be able to correctly pick up dropped stitches on garter stitch using that.
After completing your first swatch, you are instructed to measure the swatch to determine your gauge. You are never told how to measure or how to calculate your gauge. If you figured it out on your own, most likely your stitch gauge would be a little off because of the edge stitches, and your row gauge would be completely wrong because of the cast on and bind off.
The very first project, while lovely and simple for a knitter with a little experience, is plain mean for a first-time knitter. It uses multiple strands of highly textured yarn, nearly guaranteeing confusion and split stitches for someone who has only made a single swatch. The instructions for the dropped garter stitch are totally inadequate: I am very experienced, and it took me three readings to figure out what the author intended.
Needless to say, I would never give this book to a beginner. If you love the stories, the projects, and the author's admittedly good enthusiasm, buy this book. But you had better get your basic knitting instruction somewhere else.
Overall, a Delightful Book.......2005-01-26
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as much for the stories as for the patterns. I enjoy reading books that celebrate the work that women have done for centuries and, though the author adapts some of the story details, I think this book celebrates women's work. I also enjoyed her general description of different types of fiber and some practical advice on adding metallic yarn and other trendier yarns to a project to make it a bit flashier. The only drawback to the book is that most of the women in the stories were spinners and weavers, not knitters. This does not in any way take away from a very fun book.
gorgeous patterns.......2004-01-28
I enjoyed this book. It really got me thinking about what it means to be a knitter, on a personal and historical level. This might be too new-agey for some, but I'm not really a fan of new age stuff and this one didn't bother me. In general, I'd say that if the title sounds off-putting, you probably won't like it.
Each chapter of the book is centered around a theme, with a story, a lessonlet (handy but NOT comprehensive, so if you're brand new, you should get another reference) and project to illustrate the author's point. If you're looking for a pattern book, this isn't it. The real meat of this book is the themes, not the projects themselves. In my opinion, it's worth it; you should make that call yourself.
I really liked the patterns. They're illustrated in the book, but I highly recommend looking at the photos in the author's web site. They look ok in the book, but they're GORGEOUS in the pictures. The techniques, in general, are easy to intermediate level.
Things I didn't like:
- the author takes a LOT of liberties with the myths involved. (They're often entertaining liberties and they make her point well. Just be aware.)
- a lot of the yarns she calls for are pricey. However, her patterns are free-form enough that you can substitute, and she describes the yarns pretty well, so it's not impossible to find something else.
All in all, I'd say that if you're just looking for patterns, or if you're uncomfortable with new age stuff, borrow this from the library first, or read the excerpts.
Not if you want a serious pattern book.......2002-10-28
As a serious knitter, I was quickly disappointed with this book. All of the printing is done in purple ink, which I found very irritating while reading. Far too much of the book was taken up by strange interpretations of classic stories involving women, mixed with large doses of unnecessary autobiography and new-age philosophy. Some might find the stories interesting or inspiring; I found myself flipping past them in annoyance to find the patterns... which were poorly illustrated with sketches in purple. I truly love knitting and am always happy when someone else shares that love, but this book was neither helpful nor useful to me.

The best book on the subject.......2007-10-01
I was a student of Dr. Mulford during my MBA, and I can say that the book is as great as his class. He definitvely was one of the best professors I ever had.
We are used to see in many valuation books to take Free Cash Flow as a given; therefore not understanding the real implication of FCF manipulation in enterprise value.
This book explains how the FCF can be calculated and what are the usual "tricks" that companies do in order to show better (or worse?) results. And that is what is all about: building financial criteria for managers in order to make the best decisions.
The best: meaty, well-written and thorough.......2007-08-23
This is not your typical accounting/finance book (i.e., unclear, unfocused and boring). Creative Cash Flow Reporting is the best and most important accounting/finance book I've read in many years. The authors are certainly focused on the right area (determining sustainable cash flow from operations). The interesting nuances of cash flow reporting are laid out in simple terms (e.g., debt funding and repayments are reported with Financing cash flows, but the related interest expense is reported with Operating cash flows). The authors also go beyond the numbers to provide good background re: a number of strategic alternatives (e.g., why one might enter into a sale/leaseback transaction). There are many other reasons to recommend the book.
In summary, this book is a "must have" for accountants and financial analysts, and I would strongly recommend for CEOs, COOs, corporate and securities attorneys, and corporate middle managers.
Nothing new in here.......2006-12-13
this book serves more as a dictionary of cash flow related items rather than offering any prescription for active monitoring of cash flow related mischief.
save your time and money.
Groundbreaking book.......2006-03-18
Mulford and Comiskey have delivered a tour de force for the financial and accounting community in this book. Whether you are a financial analyst, corporate accountant, auditor or an executive with a small or large firm, you absolutely will benefit from this book. It is one of the most important books of the last 20 years, and in my opinion, it is the finest book ever written on the concepts and methods of deciphering Operating Cash Flow, it's relationship to earnings, calibrating and measuring free cash flow, as well as the mechanics and drivers (and sometimes deliberate manipulation by unscrupulous management) within the business system that can lead to distortions in the Cash Flow statement.
What about earnings supported by artificial means? What are the core drivers of cash flows? What should our view be, vis a vis the Operating Cash flows, regarding non recurring charges and depreciation? Are capital expenditures really as cut and dry as we like to think they are, under GAAP? How does it impact our cash flows, in the real world? How is it sometimes manipulated, to distort the underlying cash flow realities?
If you are a financial or accounting professional, read this book. Read it twice. Read it three times. An absolutely extraordinary book. Well written, insightfull, never boring, always intriguing with unique content. The authors have such an extraordinary grasp of accounting and financial flows, and bring such groundbreaking concepts and ideas to the field, that you won't put this book down, and there are not many accounting or finance books we can say that about !! "Creative Cash Flow" by Mulford and Comiskey is absolutely a virtuoso performance. Amongst, and compared to, the entire literature that exists in the field of accounting and financial analysis, this book is an extraordinary achievement.
Simply the best book on the subject........2005-09-04
Messers Mulford and Comiskey have released a primer on what has lately become a messy subject. Unlike other books with a focus on cash--Hackel's book, for example--this one delves a little bit deeper into the subject of financial misreporting. The reader is given a synopsis of how companies say that their cash is operating, whereas it ought to be put under financing or investing cash flow. There is a multitude of similarly constructed arguments. The examples are lucid, apropos, and contemporary. The book also has a deterministic model for calculating CFFO. Read it.
