1 out of 5 stars MAJOR MISTAKES!!!.......2006-07-26

Before you decide to purchase this book, be aware that there are some MAJOR mistakes! The instructions for the V-Neck pullover given on p. 24 are NOT for the sweater pictured. Apparently these instructions are for the vest pictured on p. 79 though it is hard to see the stitch pattern clearly. The instructions on p. 78 are probably for the sweater pictured on p. 25 even though the color yarn called for is ecru rather than aqua as pictured on p. 25. The motif pattern and raglan style given on p. 78 match those pictured on p. 25. Unfortunately, I found this mistake after I had finished the front and back of the pullover only to discover there were no directions for sleeves, only armbands. It was then that I decided to give the instructions throughout the book a closer look.

The instructions for the sweaters pictured on p. 72 and 75 appear to be switched. The yarn colors and directions given on p. 72 match the sweater on p. 75. The sweater diagram on p. 73 does go with the sweater pictured on p. 72 and the sweater diagram pictured on p. 74 goes with the sweater pictured on p. 75. The stitch chart at the bottom on p. 73 goes with the sweater on p. 75.
There may be other mistakes since I did not look at the children's patterns. There are some nice designs in this book, but read the instructions VERY CAREFULLY before you begin a project to make sure they are correct since that will affect the type and amount of yarn you need to purchase.

4 out of 5 stars The usual gang of idiots take on Clinton, O.J., and the rest of the 1990s.......2006-03-11

Well, I guess it is a good thing that they downsized "MAD About the '90s: The Best of the Decade," because otherwise there would be little to complain about. It is not like the result is a conventionally sized paperback. Besides, if you put this up on the shelf with "MAD About the '80s," "MAD About Superheroes," and the like, it would nice if this one did not look like a poor relation.

I picked up an issue of "MAD" a couple of times during the 1990s, specifically to check out the parodies of "Titanic" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (the former is here, but not the latter). Now, I cannot speak to the overall quality of the humor magazine during the decade, but when the Usual Gang of Idiots get to cherry-pick like this the results are pretty impressive and you might find yourself wondering why you wasted hours watching "Saturday Night Live" during that decade when you could have been hiding out in the bathroom reading "MAD" again.

There is actually a chronological pattern to what is found within these (undersized) pages, dividing the decade into thirds. Section One: 1990-1993, offers 19 choice covers (e.g., Jack Davis' "Beverly Hillbillies 90210" a choice example), a great ad parody for the Blank Video Club of America, "Where's Waldo? For Complete Morons" by Sergio Aragones, and an ad for a whitetailed deer who has joined the NRA (to avoid being "the deer-ly departed"). For parodies we have "Buried with Children" and "Star Bleech: Deep Space Swine" for television and "The Oddfather Part III," "Home A-Groan," and "The Violence of the Hams" for movies (if you cannot figure out what things are being parodied then you clearly slept through the decade). The standout pieces would be "Superman R.I.P.," "A MAD Look at Jurassic Park," "MAD Raps U Shakespeare," and "The ABC's of Rock." But my favorite has to be "When Roadside Signs Overlap," using real company signs to humorous effect.

Section Two: 1994-1996 highlights are Mort Drucker's cover of "The Clintstones," the MAD mini-poster of "Washington Cross-Dressing the Delaware," another nice Norman Rockwell painting of the 90's ("Last Parking Space at the Mall"), and a couple of nice MAD Fold-Ins. "Fairest Shlump" is the one movie parody, while the tube is done in by "Eech-Files," "SickER," and "Swinefilled." But clearly the greatest fun here is with Bill Clinton and the gang, with "Books to Make Children More Politically Aware," "Only a Republican/Democrat Could Possibly Believe...," and "It's a Blunderful Life," from the Tip of the Capra Dept. Of course, if you really want to know how much things had changed back then, then check out "If James Bond Were 'Updated' for the Politically-Correct '90s."

Finally, Section III: 1997-1999 has choice covers with Kenny from "South Park" killing Alfred who is greeted by Seinfeld with the telling line "Hellooooooooo Neuman!" There are also covers for "Martha Stewart: Dying" and "Entertain Me Weakly," the Latrell Sprewell Maneuver for pretending you are a choking "victim," and a nice Generation Crap piece on the "60's and the 90's," which spells out significant differences. On the parody front MAD does in "Star Bores: Epic Load I, The Fandumb Meganess," "Trypanic," "The Faketrix," and "The Bland Witch Project" at the movie theater, while having plenty of ammo for "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist Moves to South Park," "Ally's Appeal," and "Everybody Loathes Raymond." But they could really do an entire paperback collection just for Clinton-esque pieces such as the "Starr Wars: Monicagate" movie poster, "Proposed Features of the William J. Clinton Presidential Library," "The Special Prosecutor's Official Report on Mister Rogers," and the "White House Internship - Official Application."

Not everything here is great and I fully admit that the verdict on the O.J. Simpson trial took the wind out of a lot of humor on that particular subject, but the movie and television parodies alone make having this one worthwhile. Who gets tired of Mort Drucker's caricatures, "Spy vs. Spy", or Dave Berg's looks at the lighter side of anything he wants to look at? Besides, there are 48 pages in full color for what appeared on the covers, both front and back and inside as well. Hopefully you will find as much here to be offended by as you will to laugh at, otherwise "MAD" will be tarnishing its sterling reputation as the "short-lived satirical pulp" that "TIME" declared it to be in 1956. All together now: "What--Me Worry?"

2 out of 5 stars Small Size Ruins Book.......2005-06-24

The publishers have ruined this book by making it in a small format instead of maintaining the size used for the previous books in this series. I didn't realize that they had changed the size or I probably would not have ordered the book. The content is OK but not the size.

    4 out of 5 stars What's with the size?.......2005-06-19

If I don't rank this book with 5 stars it's only because of the size. I don't know why the publishers who made an excellent work on Mad about the fifties trough mad about the eighties, didn't follow the same pattern and for this jewel they decided to make it short. I don't mean the number of pages; I mean the size, the height, the weight. But anyway, it is a very good compilation.

        Book Description

No reader of this challenging book will ever view a Hitchcock film (perhaps any film) in quite the same way again. By a close analysis of five representative works and documenting his readings with more than 600 frame enlargements, Rothman shows how Hitchcock composed his films--how each moment bears his imprint and his special demands on the viewer. It is the seriousness of Hitchcock's reflections on the murderous power of the camera's gaze, and on the larger mysteries of love and murder, that makes him a monumental figure in the history of film. Rothman follows the course of these reflections from the gripping images of the silent film The Lodger (1926) to what he terms Hitchcock's final call for acknowledgment in Psycho (1960). The continuity is traced through Murder! (1930), the most ambitious of the early films; The Thirty-Nine Steps (1935), which established a new genre (the "Hitchcock thriller") and gave the world its sense of Hitchcock as the "master of suspense"; and Shadow of a Doubt (1943), the director's cunning demonstration to an American audience of what a Hitchcock film really is. Rothman's readings immeasurably deepen our appreciation of Hitchcock's individual achievement. At the same time the book is a sustained meditation, philosophically scrupulous, on the medium and the art of film, on the conditions of authorship in film, and on the ways that serious films might be approached in acts of viewing and criticism.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent look into Hitchcock's films........1998-12-01

This book has possibly the best analysis of Hitchcock's "Psycho" available. This is a microscopic frame by frame examination of 5 or so of the master's films. All (with the exception of "Psycho") were made early in Hitch's career ("The Lodger" is a silent film) and are British films (ie made in England vice America). I won't really comment on the analysis of the early works (as I have not seen those films), but the analysis of Psycho deserves mention. This analysis is absolutely devastating. I do not mean this in a negative way, I mean to say that when you read it, you will see Hitchcock films as you once did. According to Rothman, Psycho is not only a film about the personal problems people have (it's not just a shower scene), it is a film concerned with: a)Hitchcock's opinion of his art, what he has done and will do, b)an examination of life and art, c)the role of active participation an audience undertakes in watching a film, and d)that Norman Bates is a helluva lot crazier than we would ever have believed possible, and far more than I have space to write. Rothman makes some outrageous claims, but damn, does he support them well! He convinced me. The book is filled with frame by frame pictures to accompany the analysis. Highly recommended for students of film and Hitchcock fans.

The author discusses how to apply the Hungarian curriculum to the United States. She goes over the many questions involved in sequencing the curriculum, teaching notation, planning each lesson, and helping the students to appreciate good music.

I got somewhat lost in her chapter on directing a choir. I have always had trouble understanding instructions given by voice teachers and choir directors. (Voice teachers have told me to "imagine yourself wearing a mask." "Imagine the sound spinning out of the top of your head." What the heck does THAT mean!)

I take issue with Choksy's blanket rejection of popular music. It seems inconsistent. Kodaly said that the children's own folk music is familiar to the children, and therefore should be the starting point of the children's music education. Should not the children's own popular music be incorporated for the same reason? Choksy might be speaking more from her own musical tastes than from her training and experience. I discuss this question in my review of 0139491732.

Last I heard, Choksy had retired from music education and gone into the bed-and-breakfast business. I hope the bed-and-breakfast business gained as much as the music education profession lost.

        Book Description

The Sicilian is far and away the most popular chess opening, and many players prefer to side-step the Open Sicilian with one of the Anti-Sicilian systems at White's disposal. This book equips Black to fight against all these lines. The Anti-Sicilian systems include: positionally motivated lines such as the 2 c3 Sicilian and the 3 Bb5 systems; slow but tricky attacking lines including the Closed Sicilian and the King's Indian Attack; aggressive but loosening ideas like the Grand Prix Attack and a variety of gambits. In the most critical variations, Rogozenko provides a choice between a solid and an aggressive option. He caters for those who meet 2 Nf3 with the three main moves, 2...d6, 2...e6 and 2...Nc6.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Anti-Sicilians:A Guide for Black.......2007-01-04

Anti-Sicilians for Black by GM Dorian Rogozenko is exactly what the title claims;a Black repertoire vs anything but open Sicilians. Specifically, the chapter headings are:Early Deviations (2.c4,2.b4,2.b3,2.d3,2.g3,2.d4),Grand Prix Attack,Closed Sicilian,Alapin,"Misc Lines after 2.Nf3",3.Bb5(+),and 2.Nf3,d6 3.d4,cxd4,4.Qxd4.

I very much admire this book for both the completness and explanations provided by GM Rogozenko. As pointed out in the Intro,Rogozenko is himself a lifelong Sicilian player, and I think it shows. Rogozenko's consistent attitude, carefully threatened in the Introduction and referred to throughout, is to present solid, objectively equal lines for Black.By good luck for me,this is just the approach that appeals. But of course,it won't be to everyone's taste.

Foe example, regarding attempts to play the Morra gambit,Rogozenko "merely" recommends 2...Nf6 and transpose to the Alapin. A very pragmatic approach, given that to prepare for the Morra would be a lot of work for a very rare opening, plus the fact that the 2...Nf6 Alapin is completely acceptable for Black. But others might wish for a more combative attitude.

Rogozenko provides both a solid (early ...e6) and a more contentious approach to the Alapin, but in general the lines are main line with an eye to simplification and solidity.

A big plus to the book,in my opinion, is that Rogozenko is very careful to delineate recommendations according to one's Open Sicilian preference (2...e6 vs 2...d6 vs 2...Nc6). Thus all Sicilian players are provided with a repertoire that is easy to find.

And in my opinion the book is suitable for a very wide range of levels,as Rogozenko recommends mostly GM main lines, but consistently inserts refutations of plausible mistakes that lesser players are liable to make.

Rogozenko's style is what one might call fatherly and encouraging, and the prose is informative and not filler. For an opening book, there is very little of the mysterious "and Black is clearly better" etc. that irritates a club player like myself. Altho without complete games (customary for a Gambit book), Rogozenko ably lays out the plans for the remainder at the end of the variations. Exceptionally clearly,in my opinion.

In summary,I truly believe one could successfully prepare vs Anti-Silians with this single volume, and enjoy doing so. I congratulate GM Rogozenko on his contribution and look forward to future efforts.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST HAVE for any Sicilian player.......2005-11-08

The Sicilian Defence is meant to give Black a dynamic position with a lot of possibilities for counterplay. An attractive aspect of Sicilian Defence for Black is that he is the one who decides wich line to play in the Open Sicilian. Most of the people who choose an Anti-Sicilian line do so because of need, because for various reasons they are not able or they don't wish to learn the theory of the Open Sicilian. The goal of this book is to provide readers with complete, objective, safe and well-organized repertoire for Black against all possible Anti-Sicilians:

        1. Early Deviations(White second move deviations: 1.e4 c5 and now:2.c4,2.b4,2.b3,2.d3,2.g3,2.d4)10 pages.
        2. The Grand Prix Attack (1.e4 c5 and now 2.f4,2.Nc3) 15 pages.
        3. The Closed Sicilian 13 pages.
        4. The Alapin Variation (2.c3) 34 pages.

5 out of 5 stars Dorian Rogozenko: Please keep writing more books!.......2005-01-12

I think its clear by now that if you are a serious chess player, then gambit books are the books for you. I've had nothing but laughs at everymans.

        To the book review:

This book is excellent for its theoretical content. The variations are all relevant, and detailed. Basically he went through all the anti sicilian lines in NCO and tries to improve for black, or gives better details.

Too bad the other review said this book is not for beginners, well it is. The reason is because the analysis is dead on and gives you the best lines. Dont expect to play the sicilian without memorizing, that is if you want to play it with success.

5 out of 5 stars If you play the Sicilian, you should get this.......2004-10-02

Rogozenko gives online lectures all the time. He understands how most club-level players think better than most GMs. But this book is not a simple, low-level book full of tips. Rogo is a grandmaster that has worked hard on the Sicilian throughout his career. He shares his insights along with a lot of computer assisted analysis to make sure it holds up. Again, this is not simply theory. It is a recommended repertoire for black whenever white avoids the open sicilian.

This book often gives you multiple lines against the most common anti-sicilian systems. You can play solid and safe or risk more for winning chances.

If you play the Sicilian you know that many, many white players avoid the open Sicilian so they don't need to learn the white side of the Najdorf and Dragon and scheveningen, etc. Few books have addressed all anti-sicilians from the black point-of-view and those that have are years and years out-of-date with comtemporary opening theory.

This is simply a must-have for all serious chess students that want to play the Sicilian in tournaments. You simply HAVE to know a line against the Smith-Morra, Bb5 lines, c3 Sicilian, etc.
You cannot just study the Najdorf or the Dragon and not really know what to do when white plays something other than Nf3, d4, and Nxd4.

Unless you are below 1200 or above 2550 than this book is perfect. Its is an up-to-date manual written from a current tournament GM (i.e. these ideas WILL be played against him).
Buy it if you play the Sicilian (the most popular defense against e4).

3 out of 5 stars A comprehensive repertoire for strong players.......2003-09-04

A few months ago, a book titled "Meeting 1e4" was released. This book presents a neat repertoire for black to face anti-sicilian openings. Now Dorian Rogozenko, an active figure at chessbase online site, tries to present a more comprehensive anti-sicilian repertoire for sicilian players. There are some weak and strong points about this book. First, unlike "Meeting with 1.e4" which only discusses anti-sicilian with move order of 1...c5 2...Nc6, Rogozenko covers the needs of 1...c5 2...d6 or 1...c5 2...e6 players. Najdorf players can rejoice to see the discussion about the annoying 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bb5+ line and other relevant lines.

Overall, there are five main topics covered in this book: Grand Prix attack, Closed Sicilian, Sicilian c3, 3.Bb5(+) lines and Misc lines. Based on how dangerous an anti-sicilian line is, the proportion of topics seems very balanced. The discussion is presented in "tree-variation format" which is better than "games-format" for an opening repertoire book. Solid mainlines are Rogozenko's choice in this book, for example he recommends 3 ..g6 against Sicilian Rossolimo. We will see later that Rogezenko's approach is a double edged sword.

It is fascinating to see that the book covers 1.e4 c5 2.d3/b3/g3/etc lines or 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bc4, it gives the impression that sicilian beginners will benefit a lot from here. But unfortunately this is not 100% true for a reason. The lines recommended in this book are the main lines of the variations and thus very heavy in theory. Another weak point is the analysis, quite often the recommended lines end with minimal annotations like "Black has equal chances", while the final positions demand more explanations for beginner or intermediate players. Even veteran sicilian players will need to spend a lot of time to evaluate these positions. To his credit, He tries to turn left or right in the middle of the mainlines, for example in the closed sicilian he prefers to play 9...b6 than the popular 9...Nd4. Whether these deviation lines are fresh enough, I will let you to judge them.

In conclusion, if you are a strong player and plays sicilian, get this excellent book. If you are an intermediate/beginner player, you may get learn something, however it will be frustrating to play the recommended line and does not how to proceed from the final position due to the lack of explanations. I recommend beginner/intermediate players to buy "Meeting 1e4" by Alexander Raetsky instead.

This book deserves four stars if you are a strong player.

        Book Description

Failure mode and effect analyses (FMEAs) can actually help prevent failures, defects, and errors, because FMEAs identify special causes of variation before they occur. This is why the automotive industry's QS-9000 standard requires their use. But FMEAs are a valuable tool for any industry in which defect prevention is important.

        The Basics of FMEA:

Explains failure mode and effect analysis simply and concisely.
Discusses when to use FMEAs (e.g., during design, manufacturing, etc.).
Shows how to perform FMEAs step-by-step.

The book also discusses the QS-9000 requirement and is an ideal hands-on team resource, training supplement, and reference.

5 out of 5 stars Review of : The Basics of FMEA.......2007-05-10

I have used the FMEA tool prior to reading this book, so now it serves as a great reference handbook. It is just the right size, and does a great job providing instruction in how to use and understand this tool. Grab this one, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Basics Book.......2007-02-18

This is an excellent book to get you and your team rolling on FMEA's and their application. I have been doing FMEA's for many years and found this book to be a great starter for my current team that has little or no experience writing FMEA's.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Quick Reference Guide for FMEA.......2006-11-11

A very useful reference guide for Failure Modes and Effects Analysis. All of the basics are covered along with examples of implementation. Simple step-by-step instructions are listed to aid in the training of FMEA techniques. The authors also mention applying FMEA to non-traditional functions such as Accounting/Finance, Software Design, Marketing, Human Resources, and Purchasing. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Basic, Yet Useful.......2006-09-21

This isn't really a textbook on FMEA, it is more akin to a Quick Reference Handbook (QRH). It is tailored for beginners and is fairly general, yet I did find it useful, especially to introduce colleagues to FMEA. The book first explains the basic premises behind FMEA with a bit of history (and the relation of FMEA to ISO 9000 and QS-9000) then outlines the general methodology of FMEA in a no-frills manner.

I thought one of the things the book did best was explaining the derivation of the Risk Priority Number (RPN) and the different issues associated with altering the different components of the RPN (severity, occurrence, and detection) in an effort to mitigate the risk of a certain failure. Likewise I appreciated that the book explained the methodology of applying FMEA to not only physical products, but also processes.

The book is very short (75 pages), and can be read in about half an hour. It is not comprehensive (nor does it claim to be) but it is a good pocket reference, and is a good way to introduce FMEA as a concept.

        3 out of 5 stars Useful starter.......2005-11-09

Book info: I read the 1st edition that was published in 1996.
Pre required knowledge or literature: None
General: The book is easy to read and does not keep repeating itself, but how could it; the book is in pocketsize and only has 75 pages.

        Book content:
For a person new to FMEA, this book will be a good starter. For more advanced users, the book will disappoint. If you look in perspective; there is a lot of introduction (15%); examples / case study (16%) and appendix (21%); what makes the content on FMEA a bit short, but you will still get the big picture. And for only USD 6,-- the price / quality ratio seems reasonable to me.
