Customer Reviews:
Beautifully photographed, concisely written overview of a great fashion era.......2007-04-11
This book is a perfect companion to Alison Gernsheim's compilation of vintage B&W fashion photographs (for Dover). Schiffer, best known for its books aimed at antiques collectors, presents this survey by Kristina Harris (who herself models some of the outfits) of women's fashion decade-by-decade from 1840 to the edge of the Jazz Age. Most of the outfits presented here are reproductions, but perfect ones; as Harris explains, real vintage clothes dating back to the Victorian and Edwardian periods are often too fragile to wear and are better suited for display purposes. The photography is mostly full-color, of modern models wearing the clothes (mixed with an ample number of vintage photographs and illustrations) and excellent. The text is smoothly written and highly detailed, going over every detail of Victorian costume from hats to underwear. Put this in your vintage-fashion library!

Customer Reviews:
Pretty, but problematic.......1999-06-27
This is not a good book for the beginning costumer (who is, unfortunately, the intended audience). There are some wonderful clothes pictured--the variety of styles and types of clothing is helpful, as are the close-ups of embroidery and other trim. But, some items (both old photos and clothes) are misdated. While in most cases the error is only by a few years, two pieces are incorrectly dated by a decade or more. As a museum professional, I was also distressed by the wearing of antique clothing while also discussing methods of preservation. Museum associations, The Costume Society of America, and most vintage clothing collectors do NOT endorse wearing original garments. Someone with a solid background in costume history will still find this book a useful addition, but I would not recommend it as the first or only resource.
These ARE authentic looking.......1999-06-21
Unlike fashion plates, these are authen6ic fashoins shown much as they would show in period photographs.
These ARE authentic looking.......1999-06-21
Unlike fashion plates, these are authen6ic fashoins shown much as they would show in period photographs.
Book that misses author's own goal.......1999-04-30
The author's goal to present original garments as would be worn on actual persons unfortunately fails. This is due to incorrect undergarments worn -- which therefor does not correctly show how the garment was to fit -- and wasn't this the point of the book according to the author's comments? In many circumstances clothing simply did not fit the wearer (blantent missue for original surviving garments). Garments were draped with the backs obviously left gaping open, or skirts dragging on the ground. It would have been much better to display the garments on well-fitted dress forms (available in museum supply catalogs) with correct support garments if the author was serious about showing fit. Although the photos are "pretty", this certainly does not contain academic information.
A Coffee Table Book.......1999-04-17
The author contacted a local theater with a vintage clothing collection, gathered some pretty friends (who look very pleased to be in a book), and photographed them wearing the clothes. The text reads like a summary of any well-known history of costume, complete with familiar quotes from original sources, with the addition of chapter titles like "Whoops for Hoops" (1850s styles). Buy this book if you want to see pictures of vintage clothes, but don't take it too seriously.

HAW HAW!!.......2001-02-07
Perhaps best-known for his Janis Joplin Cheap Thrills album cover and the X-rated film adaptation of Fritz the Cat, R. Crumb is the man who in the sixties brought the comics underground to light--a fact which made many with weak stomachs and bad consciences want to close their eyes. But the sublime and grotesque black-and-white drawings insist that you look as Crumb gives play to his sexual fantasies and keen social observations. Crumb draws it as he sees it, lampooning hypocrites of every ilk, from university thinktank eggheads to brutalizing cops to wigged-out counter-culture types with their hippier-than-thou halos and hangups.
Halcyon Hippy Comix..........2000-08-15
In volume five of the Complete Crumb Comics, the great artist continues to wittily dissect the body of 1960's American society. Broad parody ('Neato Keeno Time', 'Hamburger Hi-jinx') rubs shoulders with barbed social commentary ('MOTORCITY Comics' #1, the Fritz the Cat epic, 'Fritz The No-Good') and lighthearted sexual fantasies ('SNATCH Comics' #1 & 2, 'Dirty Dog'). There's also lots of rarities in this volume (ie: the original front cover for Janis Joplin's 'Cheap Thrills' LP, a previously unpublished alternate cover for 'ZAP' #3, a poster for 'The Zap Show' from 1968, comix from 'The East Village Other' and 'Chicago Seed', etc...). For those unfamiliar with Crumb's work, volume five presents a respectable cross section of the oeuvre of the grand old man of Underground Comix.

Book Description
Justin Wilson, the world's greatest spinner of Cajun tales, and Howard Jacobs, a leading authority on Cajun dialects, combine their rare talents in this rollicking anthology of Cajun humor.
For more than forty-five years the delight of audiences around the country, the exceptionally neighborly and friendly Justin Wilson is without peer in his mastery of the distinctive Cajun patois and the stories Cajun joie de vivre. Nattily decked out in string ties, flop-brimmed Panama hat, and flaming red suspenders, and punctuating his stories with a booming "I ga-ron-tee!," Wilson projects authentic Cajun Humor instantly recognized by anyone who has visited the Louisiana bayou country.
Customer Reviews:
This was so BAD!.......2000-05-25
This book was NOT FUNNY! For the life of me, I have no idea why people find his 'Cajun' humor amusing. First of all, he uses one of the worst fake Cajun accents around. Second, his 'stories' are actually considered insulting and demeaning to most decent cajun people. This book was totally uncalled for.
Justin - That unknown stand-up comedian.......2000-05-03
If you enjoy laughing at clean jokes that are truly funny and without malice, Justin is as good as Robin Williams (no histrionics though) on a good day, funnier than Dan Ackroyd in his movies.
Mr. Wilson has two talents: cooking with a smile and spicy recipes for making people laugh.
A must see, must read and must get to know person both in print and the media.

Book Description
A Cajun man's wife really wanted a pair of alligator shoes. She'd been bugging him about it for years. One day, he saw a gator in the road, and when that gator ran straight into the swamp, that henpecked husband followed him and caught him. He wrestled that gator to the ground, flipped him on his back, and said, "You know, he ain't got on one damn shoe."
Cajuns don't care who the joke is on, as long as there is a joke. I ga-ron-tee! And no one was better at telling these spunky tales than the most outspoken Cajun of them all--Justin Wilson.
Written in authentic Cajun dialect, "More Cajun Humor" is a collection of humorous stories recounting the antics of Wilson's bayou buddies, from the high-jumping bear hunter to Catfish Joe.

Book Description
Dowland's famous Lachrimae (1604) is the earliest collection of instrumental music generally known to nonspecialists, yet it has never been studied in detail before. Among other things, this comprehensive guide investigates its publication history, its place in the development of Renaissance dance music, the significance of its writing for particular stringed instruments, and the possible connections between the famous cycle of "Lachrimae" pavans and Elizabethan conceptions of melancholy.
Download Description
Dowland's Lachrimae (1604) is perhaps the greatest but most enigmatic publication of instrumental music from before the eighteenth century. This new handbook, the first detailed study of the collection, investigates its publication history, its instrumentation, its place in the history of Renaissance dance music, and its reception history. Two extended chapters examine the twenty-one pieces in the collection in detail, discussing the complex internal relationships between the cycle of seven 'Lachrimae' pavans, the relationships between them and other pieces inside and outside the collection, and possible connections between the Latin titles of the seven pavans and Elizabethan conceptions of melancholy. The extraordinarily multi-faceted nature of the collection also leads the author to illuminate questions of patronage, the ordering and format of the collection, pitch and transposition, tonality and modality, and even numerology.

"Excellent book on the fixer strategy."--John T. Reed, bestselling real estate author
"Filled with practical examples of how to profit from rundown fixer-upper properties."--Robert J. Bruss, syndicated real estate columnist
Nobody wants to buy an ugly, decrepit, rundown house--which is exactly why they provide real estate investors with the best bargains! In Investing in Fixer-Uppers, nationally known real estate guru Jay DeCima reveals how investors can add thousands of dollars to the value of an "ugly" house. He discusses how to substitute personal skills for traditional down payments, strategies to profit without waiting for appreciation, and dozens of other value-adding tips.
Customer Reviews:
I can't agree.......2007-08-02
I can't agree with those who criticize this book for being like all other real estate investment books. This book is a breath of fresh air from many other real estate books! The author actually offers practical advice from his experience, and its written in a readable and humorous manner.
In particular, the author's description of the Haywood Houses purchase on pagers 16 to 25 is a good example that addresses many of the issues that new (and experienced) investors face, such as:
1.) Where do you find your investment houses? Jay found his in the newspaper. I found my first investment property in the newspaper also. It was a great fix-up bargain at $85,000 in 2002, and is a great rental property now, bringing in over $200/month;
2.) What do you do when you find a good property? Jay says "act quickly" when you find a property in neglect. Jay says houses in neglect are worth big bucks for us do-it-yourself fix-up investors. Jay's list of what constitutes an ugly property, including "unsightly yards, no painting done for years, broken down fences, unsupervised dogs & cats." This list should be taped on our walls to constantly remind investors what we are looking for;
3.) Fixing people problems. The property was overrun by scary looking people with tattoos who drank beer and worked on junk cars. The owner wanted out. Jay fixed the sort-term people problem in exchange for receiving valuable long-term benefits.
This is a useful book that I keep handy.
Terry Sprouse - author of the forthcoming book, "Fix 'em Up, Rent 'em Out: How to Start Your Own House Fix-up and Rental Business in Your Spare Time."
This book is worth $46,000.00. Here's what it did for me:.......2007-03-29
I have read this book 5 times now, and am putting his strategies to good use. Using Jay's strategies, I just fixed up an older house in my neighborhood. With 3 month's part time work, (I also teach 3rd grade) I now have 28k in equity, and 209.00 per month positive cashflow. The house was even owner financed, 2% down, and deferred payments too! (Jay's strategies). Next week, I will close on a second rental property for $46,500, and it appraises for $65,000. Some folks say Jay is too folksy, but he can be as folksy as he wants to be if his strategies get me $46,000 in equity in less than 6 months.
Good basic primer for beginners.......2006-11-22
I found this book to be a good primer for new real estate investors. Seasoned pros could find a nugget or two as well. More than anything else, DeCima's writing style, folksy as it is, is just fun to read. A good addition to your real estate library.
How much would you pay for a good tip?.......2006-01-16
For the most part I find book reveiws helpful. But I wonder about those by who expect to get the whole nine and a half yards for $12.98. If I can get one tip that may help me make thounsands $$ (and it has) for the price of a Subway lunch, then I'm ordering up. A guide to Investing in Fixer-Uppers, $12.98; Investing in yourself, priceless.
better than the rest........2006-01-12
Best RE book I've read. Read over 30 so far. This guy doesn't blow smoke up your butt like the other RE gurus.
