5 out of 5 stars Wearable Art.......2000-04-10

Maria da Conceicao's well-written and lavishly illustrated book shows her unique wearable art that combines hand and machine piecing, quilting, knitting, and a variety of embellishment techniques. This book lives up to its subtitle "Innovative Designs for Clothing and Fibers". As a fiber artist who also combines many techniques in garments and quilts, this book encouraged me to expand my experimentation and refine my own personal style. I recommend this book to anyone looking for inspiration in the area of wearable art.

    Book Description

Glamorous and intriguing, packed with hundreds of incomparable pictures and marvelous anecdotes about some of the flamboyant personalities of the first half of the 20th century, this stylish volume illuminates as never before the pivotal Russian influence on 20th-century European and American culture and fashion.

Alexandre Vassiliev, a well-known Russian-born costume and set designer, gives an insider's account of the artists and aristocrats who fled Russia after the 1917 Revolution and went on to play key roles in the European fashion scene. Wonderful stories abound about such noted emigrs as Serge Diaghilev and Anna Pavlova, fashion illustrator Ert, photographer George Hoyningen-Huene, and couturier Prince Felix Yusupov, better known as Rasputin's assassin. With its wealth of documentary source material and photographs of stars from Greta Garbo to Marlene Dietrich wearing couture designed by Russian emigrs, this exotic fashion book will have broad appeal.

ALEXANDRE VASSILIEV is a fashion historian, a costume and set designer, and a collector of antique clothing. He graduated from the Moscow Art Theatre Studio before moving to Paris in 1982, where he established his international career. He lectures regularly on the history of fashion, costume, and theater design and writes for Russian Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on history of fashion!.......2005-12-19

I loved Beauty in Exile. A friend told me about it. I was researching my aunt, who was a model in Paris. I discovered her world through the information this book contains. I had no idea to what extent fashion was dominated by Russian emigres in the 20s and 30s. I knew they were seamstresses and models, but had no idea they started fashion houses as well. Anyone interested in the history of fashion should own Beauty in Exile. The photos are sensational. I bring the book out to show friends who come over. I tell them to get their own, rather than borrow it. This book is too precious to risk lending. I might not get it back!

5 out of 5 stars The lost world of Russian Exiles.......2003-07-06

This book covers the now vanished world of Russian exiles from the Revolution till the 1950-60's. It covers such areas as the influence of the Ballets Russies in Paris prior to the revolution, the clothes the exiles bought with themselves, and the importance of the Kokoshnik to Russian fashion design.

We are also given the history of the now vanished Russian émigré communities in Constantinople in Turkey, Berlin in Germany and Harbin in China, with a smaller amount of discussion of the communities in Paris and London.

London and Paris mostly get discussed in context with fashion, as many émigrés, both noble and poor made a living in the various parts of the fashion industry in exile. There is a whole chapter devoted to the house of Kitmr with its exquisite embroideries and beading, which was run by Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna the younger in the 1920's.

The author has also unearthed other Russian émigré fashion houses which were well known and respected in the 1920's but are mostly forgotten now, houses such as Anely, Mode, Paul Caret, Tao, Yteb and Irfe which was run by the Youssoupoff family.

The majority of the book concentrates on fashion, but there is also discussion of the theatre, cafe's and other craft oriented activities which the Russian communities produced, especially in the 1920's. Many years of painstaking research as been conducted by the author to reconstruct this lost world. The book is full of black and white photos, which I imagine would not have been easy to find. However, if you are looking for nice colour photos of Russian costume, you will not find it here, but if you are trying to find something out on the background on émigré communities or the Russian fashion industry in the 1920's this book will be the standard work for many years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars Paleolithic Reviewers.......2001-04-27

An appraisal of European culture from an old maid somewhere in Western Kentucky knits a ludicrously inappropriate Horatio Algerish review to satisfy her puritan work ethos, that went out of date with the blue collar culture of 50's America, Honeymooners, Flintstones etc. She could be Pat Buchanans speech writer.

The fine funny folks at Bongo Comics have put together another Simpsons comics collection. In Simpsons Comics Strike Back, which collects issues 15-18, there are parodies aplenty such as "Get Fatty" (a takeoff on Get Shorty) and a skewed view on popular television shows ("A Trip to Simpsons Mountain"). The main features are, as always, written and drawn to the same high standards as the animated show. Mock old comic book advertisements like a coupon from Dr. Nick offering "a free implant with purchase of two or more implants" make this collection stand out.

    Book Description

It's another sidesplitting series of adventures as America's most popular cartoon family returns to the big colorful comic pages in this latest addition to the bestselling Simpsons anthologies.

In Simpsons Comics Strike Back, Groening fans are treated to another laugh-fest as they catch up on the latest antics of this irrepressibly irreverent family. First, it's a yuck-filled yarn of yore when Grampa Simpson reminisces about the good old days of the Depression. Then Patty and Selma take to the air as flight attendants, and the friendly skies will never be the same. Next, the network wars have come to town, and the big boys are running scared from the BBC -- the Bart Broadcasting Channel. Then last, but certainly not least, it's an epic brawl as the Presidential Fitness Program dispatches McBain to Springfield to whip the cholesterol-clogged town into shape. Between him and success, however, is hungry Homer Simpson.

When the TV show just isn't enough, fans turn to the comic books to satiate their Simpsons addiction. A veritable bonanza of the characteristic wit that made the series an international hit, this anthology will be a treasured gift for all fans of Bart, Lisa, Maggie, Homer and Marge.

5 out of 5 stars As good as the T.V. Show!.......2004-02-19

Wow, this was my very first Simpsons Comic Book that I have bought and trust me I was very impressed. I didn't really have high expectations for it but this really took me by suprise. This Comic is amazingly funny! You just have to get this book, trust me you won't regret it with classic strips such as "A Trip to Simpsons Mountain" where Grandpa tells his days when there was no television and "Get Fatty" where the town of Springfield is known as the most overweight town in the country and every food that now sells is nutritional and so the whole town has to lose some weight in order to be awarded a waterpark. I would get this Comic book if I were you because now I have at least a dozen Simpson Comics in my room after buying this one.

5 out of 5 stars More Simpson Fun Beyond the TV!.......2002-11-15

More super stories from the great characters of Springfield! Here's what this issue has to offer:

"A Trip to Simpson Mountain": Grandpa tells a story of his childhood days before television that sounds oddly enough like a cross between The Waltons, Beverly Hills 90210, Leave It To Beaver, The Brady Bunch, and the Partridge Family (must be a coincidence).

"Kill-er Up With Regular": A classic Itchy and Scratchy short from the "1930s".

"Waitresses in the Sky": Patty and Selma lose their jobs at the DMV and end up living with the Simpsons. Can they find the job of their dreams at Mr. Burns' airline (you'll love the insignia on the planes) or will they break under the pressure (actually, the "No Smoking" sign)? Would make a hilarious T.V. episode.

"Apu's Incredible 96-Hour Shift (without Getting a Break)": The legend is true, but not so impresive considering Apu didn't have a customer for 95 hours and 54 minutes of the famed shift.

"What's the Frequency Simpson": Similar to the T.V. episode where Lisa and Bart co-anchor a kids' news program. In this comic, Bart and Lisa take over a public access channel to start a new sensation: SimpTV. SimpTV offers such entertaining and informative programs as "Geek Patrol" hosted by Martin Prince, "Bad Boy" starring Nelson Munz, and "In the Kitchen With Wiggum" where Ralph creates many tantalizing dishes involving paste. The television elite of Springfield (aka Krusty the Klown, Troy McClure, Bumblebee Man, Kent Brockman, and Dr. Nick) try to shut the renegade channel down.

"Bumblebee Man in !Ay, Que Lastima!": Short about the trying personal life of the yellow and black striped character we thought we knew.

"The Dame and the Clown": Dragnet take-off where Otto is Detective Friday and Moe helps Marge escape an abusive relationship to return to her true love (Homer the Sailor Man).

"Get Fatty": One of the funniest of this book. This comic has a topic similar to the T.V. show where Springfield is named the nation's fattest city. In this comic, President Clinton plans to shape up the country's fattest town with the "worst cholesterol count in modern history." He sends his fitness ambassador Rainier Wolfcastle (aka McBain) to whip Springfield into shape. The worst offenders must lose 10 pounds in two weeks or face the consequences. Can they (or, more to the point, CAN HOMER) do it?

"The Quest for Yaz": This comic continues the storyline started in the T.V. episode "Three Men and a Comic Book." Milhouse's dream is to own a 1973 Carl Yastzremski baseball card when he had big sideburns--but is Milhouse willing to steal to get it?

        Book Description

Canada's number one humorist, routinely compared to our own Bill Bryson, has written a funny, idiosyncratic, and warmly humane book full of sly observations and witty stories culled from his travels among the people and places of our neighbors up north.
Will Ferguson spent the past three years crisscrossing Canada. In a helicopter above the barren lands of the subarctic, in a canoe with his four-year-old son, aboard seaplanes, and along the Underground Railroad, Will's travels have taken him from Cape Spear on the coast of Newfoundland to the sun-dappled streets of old Victoria.
Funny, poignant, and insightful, Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw is a provocative tribute to a land that is akin to a series of loosely connected outposts peopled with some of the most interesting folks in the world.

4 out of 5 stars Legendary Republics and... lots of space.......2007-05-17

Canada! What a place. Americans, sure... as in "North Americans" (as are Mexicans, Panamanians and Cubans, not to mention Madawaskans and Acadians). Well, that's about where the comparisons begin and the similarities end. Ferguson refers to the US as "the great carnival to the south" - I don't think I've ever read a more fitting indictment of the colossus itself. This is surely a funny, witty read, but it also is filled with a lot of real information and good perspective on Canadian life. I've traveled extensively through that vast land, and like Ferguson, have found Canada to be a loose affiliation of countries within a huge state. Canada has the saving grace of being able to laugh at itself regularly, and mercifully is missing the British stiff upper lip attitude, at least according to this book (and my travels as well). Sometimes reading a book about a place makes me want to jump up and go there, and it looks like the Hotel Frontenac in Quebec City will see me pretty soon. Ferguson actually makes Saint John's, NL appear to be a pretty cool place (I always thought of it as downright cold and quite dour, but now it sounds like one could actually have some fun there). The discussions of old Victoria are sharp and righteously funny, but the best part of the book to me is the story of the author's rambling around "looking for Canada" and finding... of all things, Uncle Tom. That's just one example of the subtle skill Ferguson brings to this writing, and when expecting to be humored one is educated, that is a very good thing indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What Does Eh Mean? .......2005-07-02

I have lived outside of the U.S. for six years with the past two in Canada thus I had about the right amount of distance from everyday life in the U.S. and enough daily interaction in Canada to find this book hilarious. Page after page I keep laughing out loud. I kept finding my self blurting out things like "exactly" and "I have seen that too". This author has nailed the North American male and has a very clear view of the differences between the States and Canada. If you are a resident of either country you will find this book full of humor and uncanny observations that ring true to anyone with an eye to individual behavior. I would have no hesitation in recommending the book.

We are used to thinking of Stravinsky in terms of avant-garde Paris in the 1920s, the epitome of modernism. These two hefty volumes of unassailable scholarship and fascinating detail correct this blinkered vision, which to some extent is a product of Stravinsky's own self-marketing. Richard Taruskin demonstrates Stravinsky's place in the specific cultural traditions of his homeland, pulling together with impressive intellectual breadth the influences of Russian music, art, literature, folklore, religious liturgy, and more. He illustrates the composer's legacy from Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov, Scriabin, and Tchaikovsky in the pre-Diaghilev period, and dazzles with his analysis of folk influence in "Petrushka" and on through the famously innovative, yet rooted "The Rite of Spring." Further volumes will be eagerly awaited by all lovers of Stravinsky's music.

                      Book Description

This book undoes 50 years of mythmaking about Stravinsky's life in music.
During his spectacular career, Igor Stravinsky underplayed his Russian past in favor of a European cosmopolitanism. Richard Taruskin has refused to take the composer at his word. In this long-awaited study, he defines Stravinsky's relationship to the musical and artistic traditions of his native land and gives us a dramatically new picture of one of the major figures in the history of music.
Taruskin draws directly on newly accessible archives and on a wealth of Russian documents. In Volume One, he sets the historical scene: the St. Petersburg musical press, the arts journals, and the writings of anthropologists, folklorists, philosophers, and poets. Volume Two addresses the masterpieces of Stravinsky's early maturity--Petrushka, The Rite of Spring, and Les Noces. Taruskin investigates the composer's collaborations with Diaghilev to illuminate the relationship between folklore and modernity. He elucidates the Silver Age ideal of "neonationalism"--the professional appropriation of motifs and style characteristics from folk art--and how Stravinsky realized this ideal in his music.
Taruskin demonstrates how Stravinsky achieved his modernist technique by combining what was most characteristically Russian in his musical training with stylistic elements abstracted from Russian folklore. The stylistic synthesis thus achieved formed Stravinsky as a composer for life, whatever the aesthetic allegiances he later professed.
Written with Taruskin's characteristic mixture of in-depth research and stylistic verve, this book will be mandatory reading for all those seriously interested in the life and work of Stravinsky.

                      5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......2001-05-11

This is an extraordinary book which will re-define Stravinsky scholarship. It is by far the best book published on Stravinsky, with perhaps one exception (The Apollonian Clockwork by Andriessen and Schoenberger). Taruskin's scholarship is of the highest quality, his knowledge of Russian music awe-inspiring, and the revelations he uncovers simply by being a Russian-speaker investigating the sources first-hand make this book a watershed in the way we think about Stravinsky. This book only takes the story to 1923 - I can only hope Mr Taruskin is working on the next volume as I write.

4 out of 5 stars debunking the myth.......2000-03-29

Taruskin's 2 volume set into Stravinsky's "Russian" period is still the MOST comprehensive investigation for those wanting a more discernible picture of the gestation of works from that period, including the Firebird, Petrushka, the Rite and Les Noces. For example Taruskin compares wedding laments used by Russian brides with those found in the opening of Les Noces. This link becomes significant when one is trying to resolve how much Stravinsky knew about his Russian heritage during the composition of these works. In his conversation books with Robert Craft, several inconsistencies emerge as to the influence of Russian music on Stravinsky's own music. For an interesting read, check out Taruskin's article, "Stravinsky and the traditions: Why the memory hole?" in Opus Magazine 1987. Getting back to the books, of particular significance is a "thematic" catalog of folk materials in which Taruskin attempts to reconstruct the origins of Stravinsky's Russian masterpieces.

I did not give the book 5 stars because I reserve that for the rarest of rarities which are reserved for books/movies/cds which provoke thought in the most unexpected of ways and are unlike anything else like the movie "Being John Malkovich". Another insightful and recent book on early Stravinsky (purely biographical) is Stephen Walsh's "Stravinsky : A Creative Spring : Russia and France, 1882-1934".

Close the Deal is bursting with hot leads for sales pros looking to sharpen their skills and win more customers. Authors Sam Deep and Lyle Sussman show how to capture sales without being pushy or arrogant. Deep, a consultant from Pittsburgh, and Sussman, a management professor at the University of Louisville, believe that the essence of selling is sticking to a system. "Masterful sales professionals are neither lucky nor gifted," they write. "They do not dream, wish or hope for victory. They go out and make it happen." The book is based on programs developed at the Sandler Sales Institute, a noted Maryland firm that trains thousands of sales professionals around the country. The authors contend that three keys to successful selling are asking the right questions, making supportive presentations, and finding exactly how to eliminate roadblocks or "pain" for customers. "There is only one reason you will sell anything: your ability to reduce a buyer's pain," the authors write. "You can't reduce pain if you don't know what it is. Buyers will tell you if you ask correctly." The book is easy to read and full of practical advice and tips. The authors provide 120 lists on topics like "Fifteen Steps to Better Listening," "Seven Fears all Buyers Have," and "Fourteen Ingredients of a Winning Proposal." Salespeople will find a powerful ally in Close the Deal. The book is a blueprint for finding and analyzing buyers, determining their needs, and getting the sale. --Dan Ring

5 out of 5 stars It works, period.......2005-04-05

I reluctantly purchased this book based on previous reviews. Being very skeptical of the checklist format, this book, frankly, seemed like a "salesman cookbook" scheme. Well, I was wrong. It took a little getting used to, but this book is written in a way that helped me learn to sell my company's products and services.

Just so you know, I basically flunked IBM sales school for engineers way back in 1991. Some of the information IBM taught stuck because, frankly, it is very good. However, even with IBM sales school (acknowledged as one of the best on the planet), I just did not grasp selling and never took up a career in selling. For all intents and purposes, I am brand new to this.

I took this book, and in one week, created a powerful prospecting script. That script, which I created almost word for word from the book, with the exception of items specific to my business, has helped to land two great new customers in only two weeks. That is not to say that it will happen the same way with everyone, but the writers have a sublime grasp of how to talk to people, remain honest, and influence them; so long as you have a sellable product or service. As the authors point out, selling is not about the product or service, but about the seller of the product or service. The suggestions in this book for how to get pass a receptionist and how to conduct a prospecting call are direct, easy to understand, and greatly helpful.

It is not necessary to read this book from cover to cover. Many of the lists have references to other lists. It turns out that, with this book, this was the best way for me to learn to sell. It can be used while you are on the phone and to brush up just before making a call.

This book is highly recommended for anyone new to selling.

1 out of 5 stars not worth the tree.......2002-07-08

This book has nothing new to add. Bad format. Dumb information.

5 out of 5 stars More bullet points than checklists.......2001-11-15

This book is written so that you can get short lists of helpful tips on sales. I thought it was going to be more of a handbook of checklists - instead it is many, many different topics arranged by subject.

There is a companion tape set that you can get from Nightingale which has the same graphics on the cover but expands a little more on the content.

Overall I've found myself referring to the checklists inside this book a lot more than I initially thought I would - perhaps because the format lends itself to quick reading and re-reading.

Sandler Sales Institute is a national franchise which has an interesting and different perspective on the sales process.
