5 out of 5 stars A Lifelong Resource.......2007-02-23

This book was published just after I took the course with the same title with the author in the 1980's. I am now a professor myself at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Pa. I have used this book as a resource to teach as well as to write and create presentations for workshops. It is an excellent resources, well written, comprehensive, and as pertinent today as the day it was published. It is a 'must' for any teacher involved with art, art history, women students, or women's studies. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in women's history.

2 out of 5 stars Slatkin's book.......2003-05-22

Another reviewer here wrote that this would be an appropriate book for a beginning art history class. Well, take it from me, an art history teacher, that the students were bored with this book. The only complaint for my Women in Art (no prerequisite required) course was that this book needed to be replaced with something more in depth.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro Book.......2002-05-20

An excellent starting point for anyone looking for the basic information about women artists throughout the history, their lives, and their impact on the evolution of the Western art. It presents just a brief introduction to the most significant artists, but will make you want to learn more about every one of them.

1 out of 5 stars The book is a simple introduction to the subject........1998-06-20

Wendy Slatkin has produced an introduction to a subject which deserves a more indepth study. She offers a outline of women artists and their work that is, however, suitable for a beginning class of Art History students. It crys out for a broader scope and more detailed research, particularily in the area of 20th Century artists. It is, in this sense, an inspirational 'textbook'.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent handy guide for the time-pressed, over-achieving generation!.......2005-09-17

            Instinctively, I picked up these two small but wonderful books while browsing the local bookstores during one weekend:

            1. The Art of Doing Nothing: Simple Ways to Make Time for Yourtself, by Veronique Vieene;
            2. The Art of Napping, by William Anthony;

            Ever since I have read Jeff Davidson's Breathing Space: Living & Working @ a Confortable Space in a Sped Up Society, many years ago, I have always valued - & benefitted tremendously from - the power of time-out. In a world where the future is hurtling at breakneck speed with hurricane-force changes, all of us must learn to do some time-outs!

            Donald Mitchell's earlier review of the first book sums up very much my personal sentiments about the first book.

            As for the second book, which is also equally lighthearted & humourously illustrated, I find myself amused & entertained by the author's introduction to a napaphobic culture. In a nutshell, these are his fun stuff:

            - profiles in napping (stories of legendary nappers, including JFK, Winston Churchill, Thomas Edision, Napoleon Bonaparte, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan!);
            - napping strategies (noice to advanced levels);
            - nap management (getting the most from your naps);
            - the future of napping;

            In some way, this book reinforces the chapter on 'The Art of Napping' in the first book. While the first book is beautifully illustrated by the co-author's photographs, the second book has several funny & bone-tickling cartoons.

            To sum up my review, I want to say that these two books (plus, Jeff Davidson's book)are excellent handy guides for the time-pressed, over-achieving generation.

            5 out of 5 stars I'm a better napper than the author.......1999-01-13

            I was there when he was planning the book, but it still came as a surprise. I guess I napped through most of his idea stage. He's a pretty good napper, but as they say "those who can, nap; those who can't write about those who can."

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent for inducing napping........1997-10-04

            As a member of a family of nappers, I thought the book was right on the money. It enabled me to get a few snoozes in while reading this. I was even able to sleep through the author's interview on CNN and not feel guilty about missing him. CA

            This book is excellent. I used to only get about 9 hours sleep a shift. Now, I fall asleep in the car on the way to work, sleep right through my shift, and have never felt better. I sleep so soundly, that even people breaking into the store I guard didnt wake me, and they cleaned the whole joint out! Even the desk I was sleeping on got stolen. Best money on a book Ive ever spent!

                  Book Description

                  Flash MX 2004 and Flash MX Professional 2004 introduce a new extensibility architecture. This is not an upgrade to an existing feature, but a brand new concept that nobody using an earlier version of Flash has seen or used before. With the extensibility tools, which include behaviors, custom-made tools and commands, the JavaScript API (or JSFL), and the XML-to-UI API, you can literally extend Flash to do things it cannot do out of the box. Things such as adding new custom commands to the menu and customizing the tool bar, adding brand new, custom created tools. The commands could be as simple as drawing a commonly used shape on the stage, or as complex as creating an entire new Flash movie from scratch. Tools take into account mouse actions and property inspector parameters. This allows you for custom shapes much as are seen in Microsoft Office, for example, stars, callouts, arrows, etc.

                  These new features will not only allow users to share code and effects more easily within the community or a production environment, but will also allow developers to package up and reuse more within Flash than was ever possible before, increasing productivity and decreasing production times. Some simple commands, tools, effects and behaviors will be included with Flash MX 2004, but the possibilities of what one could do with these are staggering. Virtually anything you can do in the authoring environment can now be written into a command or behavior.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  5 out of 5 stars JSFL Bible.......2006-02-07

                  If you have ever thought of a feature request for Flash then this book is for you. It teaches you how to make your own! Flash MX 2004 is in the title but it's just as useful for Flash 8. This book is worth the price just for the JSFL reference alone.

                  5 out of 5 stars JavaScript + Flash + Extensions = WOW.......2006-01-29

                  This book has gone under the radar based upon its title. It truly does not explain what this book can teach you.

                  Basically it teaches the basic Flash user that you can extend what Flash normally does for you in its normal authoring environment. Like create new drawing tools, create commands that perform complex real-time tasks instantly (similiar to custom macros), create custom user interfaces, add timeline effects (scripted tweens) to any object, and create scripted behaviors (prebuilt code components) to help almost automate your Flash development.

                  If your an exisiting Flash developer who knows how code with ActionScript and needs a way to streamline your development environment and development time, this is a book you shouldn't pass up.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great book for teaching how to create Extensions.......2004-07-25

                  If you are an advanced Flash user, Extending Flash MX 2004 may be just the right book for you. Written by veteran Flash developers Keith Peters (bit-101) and Todd Yard (ego7), this book introduces you to the world of extending Flash MX 2004 by teaching you how to create custom functions and features for the Flash MX 2004 authoring environment.

                  At first I had never heard about 'Extending' Flash MX 2004, but hopefully my following explanation may help you to understand this concept if you are new to this term. Imagine Flash MX 2004 being a customizable browser such as Firefox. In Firefox, you can download snippets of programs called extensions that add some cool, extra features to your browser. Creating new extensions for Flash MX 2004 is similar to developing extensions for your browser. Using a new language called JavaScript Flash (JSFL), you have the ability to create scripts, commands, behaviors, etc. that add new functionality to not a Flash animation, but to your actual Flash MX 2004 application itself.

                  This book teaches you how to use JavaScript Flash to create extensions - custom commands, menu items, and others things to help make repetitive tasks easier and enhance your Flash MX 2004 program. You start with the basics and progress towards complicated techniques. Early on you start by creating a command that, for example, allows you to take any shape and automatically arrange them on a user-defined grid. Towards the end, you move beyond simple commands and learn how to modify Behaviors, create custom interfaces using XML, and more!

                  Another great feature of this book is the expansive JavaScript Flash (JSFL) reference. The JSFL reference section contains all of the various items of the JSFL language that you can refer to when creating your own JSFL extensions. For any JSFL code item or property, you will find a description, the types of values it accepts, and a code example.

                  If you use Flash MX 2004 extensively and are interested in automating some of the repetitive tasks or adding new, useful features to Flash, you will find this book's coverage of this new topic excellent for intermediate and advanced users.

                  5 out of 5 stars Extending Flash makes your life easy.......2004-06-30

                  Keith and Todd command a huge knowledge of one of the more interesting and productive new features of Flash MX 2004, extensibility. The authors guide you on your way to learning about these new features starting off with easy concepts and then moving into more specific areas. This book is essential for anyone who develops with Flash MX 2004, the skills and tools that you get from the book will streamline your work flow and improve your productivity. From JSFL commands, xml to UI, custom behaviors and custom tools this book will load your Flash IDE with tools and widgets to get the job done faster and smoother. Excellent book!

                  Brian Underdahl's Complete Reference for Macromedia Flash MX serves as a solid cornerstone for the library of new Flash designers. Covering every aspect of building interactive Flash projects from a beginner's perspective, this handy tome is an ideal reference guide for the interactive designer starting his Flash journey.

                  Underdahl wastes little time getting the reader up and animating with Flash MX and things start to really happen in the "Adding Animation" section of his book. He opens with a short description of Flash's approach to animation, then quickly launches into a short set of tutorials. Before the end, you'll be moving, rotating, scaling and tweening objects all over the screen. The largest part of this seven-part volume is all about efficiency. Tool-by-tool descriptions fill up the first chapter in this section, but the author falls short here by not including the keyboard shortcuts for each tool when they're described. His descriptions and examples, though, are clear, and most are matched with screenshots demonstrating the tool at hand.

                  Graphics and sound are thoroughly covered, especially importing and optimizing sounds, and using them efficiently within a Flash movie. This is critical, since the misuse of sound files can inflate the size of a Flash movie, as well as impact performance. ActionScript, the underlying programming engine that drives Flash interactivity, is presented clearly in a non-programmer manner. Flash is a unique application that bridges the gap between an animation tool and a programming environment, and lucky is the artist who can plant his feet on both shores. The enclosed CD contains project files and art elements for every chapter, as well as demo versions of Canvas 8 and the Windows versions of ToonBoom Studio and Swift 3D. The CD does not, however, have a searchable PDF version of the book with color pictures. This omission is exacerbated by the lack of color pages, making any discussion of color palettes or color schemes (chapter 6) somewhat theoretical.

                  Complaints aside, this "Complete Reference" for Flash MX serves as a solid reference book, and should be seriously considered for any novice Flash designer looking for an encyclopedic tome on Flash MX. --Mike Caputo

                  1 out of 5 stars Boring and makes you feel like you read but didn't learn.......2004-10-26

                  I got my hands on this book and at first I was so excited because this was one of the first Flash MX 2004 books on the shelves so I just bought it immediately. After reading the introduction, I learnt that this book decided to not cover Flash MX 2004 Professional. Oddly, it wasn't a "Complete" reference after all. Nonetheless, I wanted to get my money's worth so I started reading on.
                  As much as the book seems to take a more text-based approach to explaining every tid bit of Flash, it fails miserably because it just seems like after reading 20 pages, you learnt something that could have been explained to you in merely 5 pages. I felt like I was wasting my time and eventually I just stopped reading the book, went out and looked for other books available.
                  If you REALLY want to learn Flash mx 2004, I'd suggest getting a book that takes you through tutorials rather than simply tells you what each thing does and runs you buy a tutorial the author does..
                  Oh and there is simply not enough screenshots or graphics to go along with the text, either they are uselessly detailed images or they simply dont exist.
                  I really hope I never come across another Flash MX 2004 book like this again. I wasted 384 pages worth of reading to this book and finally just let it go, I couldn't go on because it became so boring, reading it was like a painful job.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good Flash MX 2004 Book for both Beginners and Advanced.......2004-03-03

                  The first thing I liked about this book were the notes and tips in each chapter. Someone could just read the notes and tips and get some pretty good applicable tips on Flash MX. The book begins with the beginner in mind. I found the chapters on sound and video extremely helpful. I too have not read the Actionscript part yet, but know it will help me understand object programming using Actionscript 2.0 better than I do currently! Thanks for a great book!

                  This book does not attempt to cover the full edition of Flash MX 2004. If you have the professional version of Flash DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! The book is titled "The Complete Reference" for Macromedia Flash MX 2004 but "Complete" it is not. The book is only 700 pages. I should have purchased the "Bible" series for this application. Osborne books are pretty much hit or miss... and you don't know until you try to look something up.

                  5 out of 5 stars An absolutely GREAT reference book - a TX user.......2003-11-27

                  I have quite a collection of Brian Underdahl's books and I have always found his writing style to be easy to understand, accurate, and entertaining. I'm not new to Flash, but this book did a good job of introducing me to the changes in this new version of Flash.

                  One of the other reviews said this has little coverage of Flash ActionScript, but then I noticed the review is from 2002 and seems to be referencing another book. This one has PLENTY of ActionScript coverage- Chapters 20 to 31 to be exact! And these aren't short chapters!

                  I always try and write up reviews of books I find useful and this one demands a 5-star review. If you're looking for a book that covers Flash in-depth and will get you quickly up to speed (and not just making simple little animations) I can't recommend this book enough.

                  I am a technology consultant in Houston, TX and I have about 30 books in my collection on Flash alone. Only about 10 are used frequently and this is one of them.

                    I would give this book five stars as it shows a unique insight into the psycology of some of the best known opera composers and how events and attitudes in their lives affected their most famous works. This book is not written by a musicologist, but a psycologist who has a deep interest in music - allowing us to see some of these operas in a new light. I would certainly recommend this book for those who would like to explore what influenced the creation of some famous works like "Carmen", "Faust", "Fidelo", "Tosca", and more. A must read for those interested in opera!

                    Book Description

                    Chess is 99% tactics. So to be a good chess player, you have to spend a lot of your training time on tactics. Although basic tactics are explained in a number good books, complicated tactics - the kind that separate tournament winners from the pack - require intuition, imagination and precision. The Magic of Chess Tactics helps you develop these qualities.

                    Aimed primarily at aspiring chess players from club to master level who seriously want to improve their chess understanding, The Magic of Chess Tactics provides examples selected for both their entertainment and instructional value - as well as detailed explanations and exercises.

                    Claus Dieter Meyer, chess author and FIDE Master, is a well known analyst and professional chess trainer. Karsten Müller is an International Grandmaster and co-author, along with Frank Lamprecht, of the highly acclaimed Secrets of Pawn Endings and Fundamental Chess Endings. His popular monthly column Endgame Corner appears right here at ChessCafe.com.

                    "I have come to realise that there are basically two types of chess tactics. First, simple kinds of combinations you need to know when you start to play chess. I still believe they are the basis of everything. Things that computers see in a half-second. But the book is not about them. For those simple tactics, old Koblentz books are more than enough. This book is about *complicated* chess tactics, the kind you sometimes need hours of analysis just to discover the truth of the position. It's hard to see and calculate perfectly on the board; one needs intuition, imagination and precision.

                    "It's not easy to develop these qualities but I believe that the present book, full of examples and high quality analyses, will help you achieve that objective.

                    "Welcome to the magical world of tactics!" -From the Foreword by Alexei Shirov

                    3 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite, completely devoid of magic..........2007-04-24

                    This is a "training book for advanced players," the sub-subtitle informs us. Generally it consists of examples of extremely complex chess positions, painstakingly analyzed in depth, organized by various themes, and accompanied by exercises. The first part of the book is devoted to complex middlegame positions, while the remainder treats endgames. There are approximately 50 exercises in all.

                    I've had this book for a few years. Two or three times I have attempted to work through parts of it, but have given up out of profound disinterest. Now leafing through it again I can easily see why: most of its pages contain little more than direct database dumps of arid variations, subvariations, sub-subvariations, and so on (sometimes the nesting of variations reaches several layers in depth - in one case, nine!!), peppered by a few Informator symbols, and a few clever phrases in broken English. This type of deep analysis can be presented correctly, but there is a real art to it. Dvoretsky, for example, has done it successfully in his web column; there he organizes the analysis around a more human-like thought process, hanging the analytical twists and turns around intuitive and logical signposts. Without that kind of skilled guidance, there is little joy or learning in working through the bulging mass of moves and replies.

                    You should expect, after many such pages of skull-crushing analysis, that at least the authors will arrive at the ultimate truth about the position under examination. Not necessarily so - we are variously told "White should probably win," or "...again a clear decision is not in sight," or "The fortress can probably be taken, if our proof has no serious flaws." Fine, then what was the point of all that work?? Most infuriating is the fact that occasionally this kind of sloppiness finds its way into an exercise. In 7.5, for example, we are tasked to look for a winning line for white. In the answer, we find that there is no forced win, but rather that black blundered on the next move (the saving line is also given, parenthetically). This is completely unacceptable.

                    To be fair, there are quite a few interesting positions, and the exercises are mostly just fine. For that, three stars. What's missing is grandmasterly insight and a level of care.

                    3 out of 5 stars What a pitty..........2006-11-02

                    Having 1800+ Elo strenght of play and still some more ambitions I search for the books getting chance to lift up my understanding of chess. Not with this book. Everybody using chess software can analyse some nice positions coming from typical themes like two bishops same colour, ... played by some recognizable players (best if champions) and pomp all the options and variations into the page adding some diagrams. Its like cook book for some new authors. Reading this book I don't feel the same fun like when reading for example Tal's "Attack". So, it is not totally bad book, but if I have been lifted then back to old evergreen books. Sorry for being so tough...

                    Book Description

                    This book contains the real estate investment histories of four highly successful individuals. Within this publication, the investors describe the paths they took that resulted in the creation of four separate, self-sustaining real estate empires. Self-sustaining means that the companies they started would continue to flourish without the day-to-day input of the founder. To fulfill such a qualification, the founder must have built a company consisting of a group of independent real estate entrepreneurs who are capable of managing and growing the business to the next level of success. The investors contributing to this book have achieved that goal.

                    This book is not real helpful for anyone looking to invest, develop or get involved in commercial real estate. It is a very quick read that can be finished in a few hours. The quality of the information and the writing style is substandard. The stories about the real estate tycoons in this book are somewhat interesting but in no why helpful or particularly insightful for somewhat looking to get into real estate.

                    It's sort of like the old stock market adage "buy low, sell high". That's the rather simplistic advice that you get in this book from the stories of these "sages".

                    I have worked in commerical real estate for the past 20 years and am always reading and learning but this book is not really helpful for the novice or the expert.

                    If you are serious about real estate, skip this book and get something else. It is not worth the $$$.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2007-05-22

                    I have made a living in commercial (income property) real estate for over twenty years. This is one of the best, down-to-earth, specific real estate books I have ever read.

                    The book is divided into three sections. In my opinion the "Annotations" section is the best of the three. Here are 65 very specific commercial real estate concepts. I found their method of calculating loan size based on NOI to be unnecessarily convoluted, but that is my only beef. Here are specific concepts regarding valuing retail properties, leasing retail properties, apartment operation, finding demographic information (in the world of income property, demographics are destiny), etc.

                    The next most useful section is the short long-term outlook for real estate. There is some very good information here.

                    I found the beginning section (autobiographies of 4 very successful real estate investors) to be the least important. Frankly, I'd rather re-read William Zeckendorf's autobiography.

                    This is an extraordinary bargin at $25.

                    3 out of 5 stars Not too much substance here.........2007-05-19

                    While it made for a good read, if you have any moderate amount of experience in real estate investing (I've been doing it for several years), this is mostly a book on common sense items...
                    I was hoping to see more detail about the individuals highlighted, rather than a brief overview of how they became successful.
                    There are a couple decent points in the appendix regarding valuation and such, but mostly stuff that you should already know if you're planning on buying investment real estate.
                    Overall, there isn't a whole lot of USEFUL information to be gleaned from this book.

                    I found this book to be exceptional for current investors. It is not for the beginner. The insight into different areas of expertise by each company was truly enlightening and insightful.

                    This book was very motivational for me and will help in my future commercial investment strategies.

                    I highly recommend this book and will be re-reading it this week to cement these ideas and strategies into my business.

                    2 out of 5 stars Fluff.......2006-11-06

                    Only 125 pages of actual 'meat.' The rest is 125 pages of 'annotations.'
                    This book is fluff at best. Doesnt do an adequate job of delving into the actual nuts and bolts of how these guys did what they did. And why else would anyone be reading a book like this? Dont waste your time or money.
