Book Description
In artworks from a mosaic by Marc Chagall to schoolchildren's paintings, in writings from Susan Fenimore Cooper to Annie Dillard, and in diverse print sources from family genealogical registers to seed catalogs, the four seasons appear and reappear as a theme in American culture.
In this richly illustrated book, Michael Kammen traces the appeal of the four seasons motif in American popular culture and fine arts from the seventeenth century to the present. Its symbolism has evolved through the years, Kammen explains, serving as a metaphor for the human life cycle or religious faith, expressing nostalgia for rural life, and sometimes praising seasonal beauty in the diverse American landscape as the most spectacular in the world. Kammen also highlights artists' and writers' shift in attention from the glories of seasonal peaks to the dynamics of seasonal transitions as American life continued to accelerate and change through the twentieth century.
Few symbols have been as pervasive, meaningful, and symptomatic in the human experience as the four seasons, and as Kammen shows, in its American context the annual cycle has been an abundant and abiding source of inspiration in the nation's cultural history.

Customer Reviews:
WOW .......2006-04-23
This book honestly made me feel like how could yu watase write this book so sad, but then I read the last volume (volume 14) and i said "Now I know why she wrote this book the way she did, and I wish that everyone could read the 14th book and be as happy as I am now". Yu Watase is the best artist and writer that I know.
One of my favorite volumes.......2005-06-28
I started on Fushigi Yugi originally through the anime, then resorted to the manga three years ago. This has become my longest series and this volume is one of the best I have read. The action has met its climax and the rival priestess has gained her soldiers before Miaka did, making everything more interesting. And the highlight in the manga in my opinion, Nakago's cold kiss with Tamahome. ^.^ Ok so it wasn't exactly what the events were leading to but one of my favorites.
Anyhow, I do like especially to this point how both Yui and Miaka have progressed and to this day, Nakago remains one of my favorite villains. If you are in to FY for the long haul, buy this one as well as the others to follow and complete your collection.
Great volume.......2005-06-17
This is a review of both a volume of Fushigi Yuugi and Ayashi no Ceres. Because Amazon.com links to both series, I will review both volumes.
This is volume twelve of Fushigi Yuugi. It is a wonderful volume. Miaka and Tamahome are a great couple. They have a wonderful love story. In this volume, Tamahome hugs Miaka and comforts her after the events from the last book. Miaka and Tamahome are girlfriend and boyfriend and each other's true love. When Miaka and Tamahome learn that now they can become intimate, they must face a decision. A war is coming, and Miaka knows what may be comign ahead. Miaka hugs Tamahome and says that he can make her his bride. Miaka and Tamahome kiss. As they kiss, they have a very romantic and sweet scene. When they are interrupted, they share a sweet moment. Tamahome hugs Miaka and tells her that they will continue this on their wedding night. They have a very sweet scene. When Miaka learns that she and Tamahome may have to separate, Tamahome hugs her and they appear in her world. Tamahome's love for Miaka let them be in her world together. Miaka and Tamahome hug that night. Yui finds out that they are in her world together. Miaka and Tamahome walk into town and Miaka shows her world to Tamahome. Miaka and Tamahome walk happily arm in arm through town and have lots of loving and romantic moments. When Tamahome and Miaka are on a date in a restaurant, Tamahome finds out the truth of how Miaka entered his world and must make a decision. This is a wonderful volume.
In Ceres, Tooya finds out that his memories were implanted into him. Aya returns to herself. It is revealed that Miori is not Tooya's old girlfriend. Tooya tells Aya he's sorry he can't remember their relationship, but he still loves her. He leaves to rediscover himself. Aya transfrers to a new school. Yuuhi is there too. Shiso threatens Aya, telling her he will kill Yuuhi if she doesn't leave him. Aya pretends to be cold to Yuuhi to protect him. Tooya realizes that even if he can't remember Aya he still loves her. Tooya returns to Aya and they reunite and kiss. Tooya asks Aya to elope with him. They move in together. Aya and Tooya have the place alone one night and kiss. They make love and share an intimate night. They go through the days happily. Later, Aya and Tooya go on a journey. Aya is hurt and Tooya awakens her. He greets her in bed and they kiss. They share many times together. Later, they visit an island and Tooya regains his memory and reveals to Aya that they knew each other before. Aya and Tooya go home and Aya kisses Tooya as he looks up their island.
Both stories are great. Miaka and Tamahome are a great couple. Soa re Aya and Tooya. Miaka and Tamahome are a wonderful couple. Both stories are great. I have read the entire series of both manga volumes and they are both wonderful.
One of My Favorites (A bit of a spoiler, warning).......2005-02-25
Another uniquely Yuu Watase manga.
Ten was another one, like 5, where everything happens at once, but it is a better one to leave off on if you have too.
Poor Aya is alienated, the people in school think she is a slut because of Aki, and to keep Yuhi safe she has to be terribly mean to him. She is really alone with Shurro and Chidori gone. But it isn't all bad Toya realizes, again, it doesn't matter that he doesn't remember Aya a part of his heart does and that is enough. Aya saves Toya by destroying the hypnosis machine that took Toya's memories, so he remebers her. He comes to save her and Alec helps them both to make an escape.
Alec poor thing felt bad about what he did to Toya and couldn't do that to Aya. He is so cute isn't he.
This one at the end is like an action movie. The illustrations are just gorgeous. I am waiting for 11.
I love this book.......2004-11-23
When i first read this book i could not belive what Aki did to Aya in the Libray of the school and Yuhi. The great thing is Toya starts to get his real memories back If you havent owned any of these books i really think that you should get them their really good. :)

Enter Chidori another tennyo.......2003-11-26
Here we mee chidori another tennyo, very sweet but only one problem, she is 16 but looks like a kid.....though she has the brain of a 16yr old, she can act like a 9yr old, She starts to develop a crush on yu'hi, although he still likes aya, but things later on change, it is a good book that you must have!!
My fav book of the series so far..........2003-08-19
I found this the more humorous of the four books that have already come out. The art is wonderful and the story dark, yet at some points, very uplifting. Fun book to read, it was worth the wait.
The Story Continues.......2003-07-15
In this book, Aki starts making the transformation into the progenitor. Mean while, a girl named Chidori shows up on the door step of Aogiri dance school asking for Ceres.
From here on, you'll have to find out via other people or by reading it. It picks up where Suzumi left off and continues to gather steam. It will make you want to find out what happens in the next volume, Mikage, even more. It will answer what happens to Touya and what change is occuring in Aki.

Book Description
The setting is 1920s Berlin, cultural heart of Europe and the era's only serious cinematic rival to Hollywood. In his engaging study, Thomas Saunders explores an outstanding example of one of the most important cultural developments of this century: global Americanization through the motion picture.
The invasion of Germany by American films, which began in 1921 with overlapping waves of sensationalist serials, slapstick shorts, society pictures, and historical epics, initiated a decade of cultural collision and accommodation. On the one hand it fueled an impassioned debate about the properties of cinema and the specter of wholesale Americanization. On the other hand it spawned unprecedented levels of cooperation and exchange.
In Berlin, American motion pictures not only entertained all social classes and film tastes but also served as a vehicle for American values and a source of sharp economic competition. Hollywood in Berlin correlates the changing forms of Hollywood's contributions to Weimar culture and the discourses that framed and interpreted them, restoring historical contours to a leading aspect of cultural interchange in this century. At the same time, the book successfully embeds Weimar cinema in its contemporary international setting.

It comes as no surprise that Hans Werner Henze's autobiography, like his music, is alternately elegant, dense, and humorous, with a clear love of history and classical beauty. Henze covers both his life and work through 1995; readers may find themselves looking back to Artur Rubinstein's My Young Years to find a musician who has written an autobiography with as much style. Of special interest is Henze's first detailed public comment on the events surrounding the notorious canceled premiere of Das Floss der Medusa. There is also a long sequence of diary entries from his second visit to Cuba. The diary format effectively conveys his initial excitement in the country, which clearly sets off his later disillusionment with Castro. Anecdotes about almost all of Henze's music abound, but the most interesting comments are about music in general--why he hates cello sonatas, why he likes to write for the guitar, why electronic music is unsuitable for ballet. Henze writes beautifully about Mozart ("the link between artistry and simplicity"), Mahler, William Walton, and the Naples debut of Maria Callas. There is a straightforward description of how he composes and a section describing the philosophy behind his festival at Montepulciano.
Stewart Spencer's translation is everywhere elegant. In Wiesbaden, we read, one finds "only old ladies with equally ancient hats and poodles." Readers who have come to Henze's music via the Grammy-nominated new recording of the ballet Undine will find helpful information on that work, both about the premiere production and a major revival in 1998. --William R. Braun
Book Description
Hans Werner Henze is one of the world's leading composers. His autobiography is frank, impassioned, and alive with memorable images and characters and graphic accounts of the creative process and performances of his music.
Henze's unhappy childhood during the onset of Fascism found release in music, which, in spite of the disruption of the war, became the center of his life. He studied composition but began to make a career as a ballet conductor, until his creativity found expression in music that, by the early 1950s, had begun to distance itself from the fashionable but dogmatic rules of serialism in favor of his own individualistic conception of beauty. In both the political and sexual spheres, Hans Werner Henze is an outsider whose utopian dreams of a humane communism have always had to contend with reality. In musical and cultural matters, however, he is one of the best-connected and most influential figures of the postwar era and his autobiography brims with personal stories and observations of such luminaries as Igor Stravinsky, W. H. Auden, Benjamin Britten, Ingeborg Bachmann, Luchino Visconti, and Hans Magnus Enzensberg. A true cosmopolitan, he is happiest living in Italy, where his innate lyricism has found a natural home.
"Bohemian fifths" are intervals that were played by Bohemian horn players, and which, according to Baroque and Classical rules, were proscribed. Henze's writing protests the lack of freedom that such a prohibition implies, both in music and in life.
Customer Reviews:
This is a very honest book and gives you insight of Henze works's.......2005-12-28
I recomend this book to anybody interested in music or musical composition. Henze writes with a great sense of humour and sometimes it feels like reading a novel ( this is a complimment!) .
What I like about Henze is his "brutal " honesty and commiment to music. I have enjoyed this book a lot . I hope that you do too.
Some stories in this books deserve to be read .
Fascinating reading by a Bohemian musical aristocrat.......1999-06-09
Hans Werner Henze has led a rich, full musical life. He had good vital instincts from the start, opting to foster high level contacts within the musical institutions in Europe East and West. The West has served him well first with early operatic productions,a succession of unbroken commissions and latter recordings by premiere ensembles. He turned away from his own post-war generations quest for a new musical language along the lines of serialized materials and post-Webern gesturing. Instead he found his own voice in a lyrical eclecticism that continually searches for differing dramatic situations, as in painters Gericault's "The Raft of Medusa". This autobiography reveals an active life of schedules, concerts, rehearsals, assisting in teams for the productions of his works, discussions and conducting. Along the way Henze stops to chat with friends for inspiration and support and news,he even pays respects when necessary at the funerals of Auden or composer Luigi Nono. We also find Henze in Cuba with revolutionaries And in East Germany with his friend Paul Dessau. Leftism for Henze is odd, a man who sacrificed nothing was still tauted by the primary venues of the West. But we learn of Henze's continual quest for compositional materials and how politics enters this formula no matter what ideology he happens to share. Also how each work inhabits its own life. His politics does extend to going out on a limb for comrades, as when composer Isang Yun was abducted by the Korean government from Germany to return to prison and torture. Henze assembled a forum for his release in Europe. He also made an arrangement of a song by Theodorakis also a victim of imprisonment. For the musician this autobiography makes fascinating reading on Henze's views, how his music is performed, who is the most sensitive conductor, what composer he admires, how he organizes festivals and venues.I must say I never warmed to his music.

Holding Productive and Effective Meetings.......2006-12-06
In "How to Make Meetings Work, Michael Doyle wrote a very useful and comprehensive book on guiding people on how to plan, organize and run effective and productive meetings. The book is well written in an easy to follow and understand style. It helped me to discard the notion that meetings are a waste of time and money and learnt how they can be very useful for an organization.
Among the important tips that the author highlighted are the importance of having a clear agenda distributed in advance of the meeting, having a clear purpose of the meeting, clarity on the type of meeting being held (e.g. whether it is a planning meeting, for decision making, feedback etc), adequate preparation by all participants, participation in discussions by all those present at a meeting, importance of starting and ending on time, the need to stick to the agenda, summarizing action items and resolving conflicts that may arise. The book also provides insights into meeting leadership skills.
This is one of the reference books that I use when facilitating on holding effective and productive meetings.
The book is essential reading for all people who have to organize, attend or chair meetings. Don't be put off by the date of publication (originally published in 1976) as the lessons the book teaches are timeless.

A Comprehensive Book on Meetings!.......2003-03-03
Although at first glance I was skeptical, this book provided great insight into running a meeting that participants will actually enjoy and get something out of. It was not just a repeat of the things I already knew. After reading this book and implementing some of the ideas, people noticed the improvements from clear agendas which stated the purpose, to the approach used during the meeting to make sure we were all aligned and in agreement on what we were to achieve. I highly recommend this book.
why don't they teach this in business school?.......2001-01-25
of all the things that we learn in school, how to more effectively manage a meeting is not one of them, but should be. i wish i had read this many years ago. everyone who joins our team receives a copy in their first week.
the handbook of successful meetings.......1999-05-19
Doyle/Strauss have written the classic in meeting design, facilitation and management. It is easy to read and use; the standard guidbook that everyone uses.

An excellent guide for enhancing team problem solving.......2000-04-05
This is a book about storyboarding.
Unlike most other storyboarding books which cover only applications in the film and TV production world (essentially because of its origins from Walt Disney Studios), this one is geared primarily towards business/organisational problem solving - in a group or team setting. It's very well written and graphically illustrated, with a lot of real-world examples.
If you want to apply innovative, practical ideas to speed up your group decision making, group planning and group problem solving, this is an excellent guide. However, be prepared to have a lot - I really mean a lot - of Post-It Notes, large and small. The ideas and techniques expounded can also be applied to group project planning and management.
Compared to David Straker's Rapid Problem Solving with Post-It Notes, this is a much better book, because of its depth of coverage and many real-world examples, including nonprofit outfits. I must add that David S!traker's book, though also well-written and illustrated, is geared primarily towards more and other innovative uses of the common Post-It Notes in the field of problem solving, business or otherwise.
