Landscape Painting: A History
ASIN: 0226906019 |
Book Description
In the early sixteenth century, almost without warning, Albrecht Altdorfer promoted landscape from its traditionally supplementary role to the center of the picture field. Christopher S. Wood shows how Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) transformed what had been the mere setting for sacred and historical figures into a principal venue for stylish draftsmanship and idiosyncratic painterly effects.

Not the best, but not much out there.......2004-02-15
I am a WWII British sweetheart collector. This book is known as "The Black Book". He also wrote another, which I reccomend, called "Antique Sweetheart Jewelry" (the red book). Both are good additions to any sweetheart collectors library. Now to the book. It has great photos. They are probably the books most valuable asset. You will be able to find things more by the photos than the descriptions or the sections. The problems with this book are numerous. At least one color plate is mirrored. Several pins were photographed upside down. The prices are not even close to accurate. If they were I would be a millionare. (but this is a commomn problemn with any antique price guide book, if you want to find out the current price of things, go to eBay or a militaria fair) He also has many, many pins in the wrong category. British war relief are misidentified and put in with international sweethearts. Some WWI are in mixed in with WWII. The book, while an excellent tool, is far from perfect and should not be taken as the difinitive voice in sweetheart collecting. I would love to see Mr. Snider do another book and focus *only* on sweetheart jewelry. Leave out the ephemera, compacts, hankies and all the other bits and bobs he tries to jam in this book. This is a complicated type of jewelry to collect. Anyone with the brains and money enough to put a new book on the market, that is accurate will have the collectors standing in line for it. If you are considering it, buy it. You will benefit from the good parts of it and just take the rest with a grain of salt.
Not the Definitive Guide We were Promised.......2001-04-02
Nick Snider's book has been credited with bringing hundreds of new collectors to the field of sweetheart jewelry. As an avid homefront jewelry collector, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I was disappointed to find page after page of photographs with hardly any description or even identification! World War I jewelry was mixed together in the same photo with jewelry from World War II. Pins from American war relief organizations were listed under "foreign". Short essays at the beginning of each chapter were informative, but hard to relate to the pieces displayed with them. In my judgement, homefront and sweetheart jewelry collectors will still be looking for that "definitive guide" to our avocation.

Sweetheart Collector Must Have!.......2000-10-30
The book is a great source of information for all aspects of Sweetheart collecting! It covers WWI and WWII mostly. American is the main focus with a little British and Homefront thrown in. It is an invaluable source for those just starting out or a serious collector but there are some problems. The pictures are prolific BUT some so small you can hardly tell what is what. Some pins are misidentified or put into the wrong category. That does not detract from the help it will give you, mostly because there are only three guide books on the market that deal with sweetheart jewelry. The price guide is way, way off and some of the information must be taken with a grain of salt. I would say buy it if you collect but if you want to know prices, go to eBay or a militaria fair and talk to the real experts. Mr. Snider needs to research better, proof his books better and really focus on sweethearts. If this is supposed to be a book on sweetheart jewelry, leave out the playing cards, posters, stickers, banners, pillow covers and all the other junk he jams in this book. If that stuff was not there, the photos would be better and so would the help the book offers.
A Different Way to look at WWI & WWII.......2000-04-24
This wonderful, comprehensive book, is a true joy to not only read but have in your collection. It affords easy access to a wide variety of sweetheart jewelry - the homefront equivilant of medals and patches - with concise, easy to read explanations of each piece. The pricing guide at the end of the book is especially useful when buying - or selling - a piece of history. A MUST read and own book for any sweetheart jewelry collector!

Wonderful Story - Please read it!.......2006-09-19
I can understand why readers are hesitant to read it. I mean, who wants to read a story about some kid taking care of his little brother? Especially a toddler who cries and whines.
But the truth is that Akachan to Boku (released in the US by VIZ as Baby & Me) is a wonderful manga series full of love, laughter and tears. The characters are wonderful. The cast is full of well rounded characters that are flawed and truthful.
The story is centered around 10-year-old Takuya. He and his little brother Minoru have lost their mother in a tragic accident. Their father is loving, but is often busy with work. Poor Takuya must spend his free-time taking care of a toddler.
The manga is full of slice of life moments in the lives of the men/boys of this family. It's heartwarming, sweet, and also tragic. Throughout the story, you feel for Takuya, the pressures in his life, and the loss. But also for Minoru, who is a curious 2 year old. There are great bits with both of them in school. And with wacky neighbors.
I don't know if I can express how touching the story is (without major spoilers). I think teens will relate to Takuya, the stress he feels, and the unfairness life sometimes holds.
really heartwarming little brothers story.......2006-06-03
The story of these two little brothers is really good. It basically follows the relationship of these two little brothers as they deal with everyday life; school, friendships, and home life. It has made me cry at times and made me laugh tons of times. Her drawings of the expression on the smallest boy are amazing, the biggest and most expressive eyes in all the manga world..lol..sooo cute!!! I highly recommend this cute little story.
Customer Reviews:
ultimately a good read.......2001-05-09
I love the writings of Caroline Knapp. Drinking a love story is great book while A Pack of Two is her finest. This book, Alice K.'s guide is her weakest book. Which isn't a terrible criticism as her weakest book is better than most writer's best books! I found the use of initial's throughout the book annoying as h*ll. I'm not sure what the point to that was beyond annoying the reader. The first half of the book is about very trivial matters such as finding the perfect shoes, blouse etc. Luckily, the second half of the book is where Caroline begins to deliver on something well worth reading. In summary, not her best book but not all bad either.
One of the funniest books I have ever read.......2000-09-18
Reminding me slightly of Bridget Jones' Diary, Alice K's Guide to Life was one of the funniest, and most fun to read, books that I've read this year. Alice K (not her real initial) is 30 something, not meeting the right men, in therapy, and completely hysterical.
Her commentaries on life - from office mates (Women with Boundary Issues, the sniffer), her money (non) management skills, love, and her ideas for new magazines, will have you laughing out loud as you read this book. I just thought of something that made me sit straight up in bed - I LOVED this book.
lighthearted reading.......2000-03-02
This book hits home to the feminine experience. I can sympathize and empathize with Alice K.. The book kept a smile on my face. I was inspired to read this after reading Drinking: A Love Story, another great book by Caroline Knapp. I recommend it!
Cheaper than therapy.......1999-12-23
I refuse to believe there could actually be a woman like Alice K. anywhere. Even operating with the slightly more comfortable assumption that Alice K. is a highly exaggerated composite, it's still fairly scary. Funny book, but a frightening character.
That, however, is missing the real benefit of Alice K. and her guide to life: no matter what is wrong with you, Alice K. is worse. Read this book and you'll be able to feel mentally healthy and vaguely superior even if a judge has confined you to a state psychiatric hospital.
Example: so you're hugely agoraphobic, and you haven't seen daylight unfiltered by glass and blinds in six years. You can read this book and think: "At least I'm not routinely spending three times my yearly income on shoes. And I know what to do with leisure time."
See? Wonderful! If you have this book nearby, you won't need to tell your troubles to a mental health professional; one quick glance will convince you your hang-ups really aren't that bad. (And it'll put a smile on your face, too.)
Witty and amusing.......1999-10-20
If you liked this book, also try "The Healing Journey" series of self help journaling books by Phil Rich. The first two books, "The Healing Journey" and "The Healing Journey for Couples", are journaling books written to help people learn how to journal and what to journal about. The other books in the series, called "The Healing Journey Through..." focus on journaling and self help in specific topic areas like grief, divorce, job loss, menopause, retirement, and addiction.
Book Description
Theda Bars's remarkable life as told by Eve Golden's heartfelt account is short of discovering a means of traveling through time and as close as we are ever likely to get to meeting the screen's great Vamp!
Customer Reviews:
Couldn't put it down.......2006-12-27
A while ago,I bought this book after reading some high praise for it on a message board. It went into my to-be-read pile, where it languished for some months while I worked my way down through previous purchases.
Then yesterday evening I started into it. And couldn't stop (except for necessities) till I'd finished it, far later than I'd intended to stay up. It was well-written, illuminated by early film history without a whiff of dustiness, illustrated with a marvelous collection of images, and best of all, took the Theda Bara I'd known only from campy college posters and revealed the delightful, complex woman behind the image.
Highly, highly recommended, and has spurred me on to buy Eve Golden's other books, and to hover by my mailbox in keen anticipation of their delivery.
All hail the Queen of the Vamps!.......2005-10-04
This is a fascinating quick read on one of the earliest real moviestars, the screen's first sex symbol, and a truly legendary star. Ms. Golden writes with a balanced style, neither an unapologetic sycophant nor a hard-to-please critic. She's an admirer of Theda's life, interested in both her acting career and in her life off of the screen, although she isn't afraid to call a spade a spade and discuss a critical turkey that Theda was cast in. However, as lively and informative a read as this may be, it can only go into so much depth about Theda's life and acting career, given what a private person she was and how a lot of details about her early life and her life after retiring from the screen may never be fully known. And, of course, since only a handful of her films survive, none of them representative of her true talents, the discussion about her films can also only go so far and deep. We get plenty of information about the storylines, critical response to them, the filming experiences, Theda's feelings at acting in them (she was quite unhappy at how most of her roles were Vamping roles instead of getting more chances to play sympathetic characters), but without having a chance to actually see these films, we can't really have a full valid analysis of them. Reviewers of the time either loved or hated her, and it really does seem like she were a fine screen actor (her stage acting is another matter), but minus the visual evidence, even a good biography such as this one can only go by what people of the time said and what is evident about her talents even in her handful of surviving mediocre vehicles. Unless more of her films are found, like 'Salome,' 'Cleopatra,' or 'Under Two Flags,' there's no way one can convincingly prove her full worth as an actor, how many of her films would have held up over time, if time might have given some of them their revenge. But what we do know for certain are the facts reported in this book, that Theodosia Goodman was a pampered child from Ohio, an intellectual snob and insatiable bookworm her entire life, interested in mysticism and things many people today would term Goth (although the stories cooked up about her by the press are another story; she was never that much of a mystic!), devoted to her husband, a very talented actor who was trapped in a role she didn't entirely feel comfortable in, a stunningly beautiful woman when photographed correctly or seen in motion (all of the photos in the book are wonderful!). I also liked the information on why most of her films were lost; it's well-known that at least 75% of all silents have been lost, but I didn't know the specifics as to why so many of Theda's in particular were lost apart from the fire at Fox Studios in 1937. Many silents were lost within their own lifetimes, not just by the Thirties and Forties. It's also explained why she went out of vogue; besides the fact that there were new Vamps on the scene, and that the public preferred flapper movies now, Theda's style of acting had majorly gone out of vogue by the mid-Twenties, when the method of acting that was taught and praised in the Teens had long since been replaced by a more natural acting style.
A Fascinating Woman.......2003-03-05
Iým not sure where or when I first heard of Theda Bara, but ever since I did, I thought it was a ýcoolý name. The name --- and that she was an actress in the distant past --- was about all I knew about her ... until I read Eve Goldenýs excellent book. I got this book more or less on a whim; but from it I learned a great deal about this fascinating actress with the cool name. It turns out that she probably was a pretty ýcoolý person as well! In fact, this book led me to seek out copies of the few remaining movies Miss Bara made --- such a pity that more examples of her work donýt exist. The examples Iýve seen are, it is often said, not her best; but she seems to have been quite a capable actress.
This is not a review of Miss Bara, however, but of Ms. Goldenýs book. And a great book it is: informative, well-illustrated (I agree with the authorýs philosophy that ýa biography without pictures is like a cake without icingý), and with a clear writing style. It is extremely well-researched too --- the numerous quotes from contemporary reviews of Miss Baraýs movies shows that Ms. Golden did her homework.
I donýt know exactly what some reviewers meant when they noted Ms. Goldenýs ýsarcasticý attitude. I enjoyed her writing. Her book was informative, not too scholarly, and written with good humor. I think itýs a book Miss Bara herself might have liked. It certainly succeeded in sparking my interest in this actress, and in the genre of silent films in general.
In this book you will learn not only about Theda Baraýs life and work; you will also discover much about the early film industry, and about Hollywood publicity operations too. And hereýs an interesting tidbit: the ýcoolý name was not really an invention of a Hollywood studio at all; in fact, the ýArab Deathý story came about as an afterthought, long after the name itself had stuck on Theodosia (ýThedaý) Goodman.
Great Look Into Hollywoods First Bad Girl.......2003-02-17
I have always had an interest in the Silent Era this was one of the first books I read on this era.Theda Bara was the movies first bad girl in reality the book will show that she was happiest with a book in her lap. What I mostly enjoy about Eve Golden and her work is her ability to write a biography without showing bias. This is a great intersting account into the life of Hollywoods "Vamp".
A quick read of the original Vamp.......2001-08-08
This is a great book considering how little info is available on Theda Bara. The author put a lot of research and care into this book. It's a terrific book for both silent film buffs and femminists. Theda deserves her title as "The Woman Who Defined VAMP"!

Great book, but this is an out of date edition.......2003-04-09
I wish the material in on-line reviews had stated clearly that "Ultimate King's Indian Attack" by Dunnnigton was just an updated edition of "How To...", otherwise I wouldn't have purchased this "How To..." book. Granted, it was only $8 (+ shipping) used, but it was still a waste of time/money to track it down and buy it. I thought that perhaps "How To..." was more of an introductory text. Get "The Ultimate King's Indian Attack", the updated version of "How To...", by the same author instead.
If you're really strapped for cash, and you don't care about slightly out of date theory (some ideas stand the test of time), then I give this book 5 stars, but I want others looking for KIA books to know these two are just different editions of the same book.
Book Description
A menacing, but easy to learn, system. Chessplayers seeking a flexible system for White should consider the King's Indian Attack. The basic concepts are fairly easy to learn, making it a very suitable opening for the developing player. The theory does not change as rapidly as many other lines This work emphasizes explanation, rather than extensive analysis of variations.
Customer Reviews:
too simple.......2000-09-26
organized well, but too simple and dismissive. does not go into details. does not warn of tactical tricks. much better book is "the chessbase university bluebook guide to winning with the KIA". not enough complete games... much better books out there...
Book Description
This guide to the Limited Liability Company (LLC) covers the unique characteristics of an LLC under federal law, forming it under state law, the importance of a written operating agreement, the requirement for maintaining a sufficient capital base to meet all business commitments, and the tax forms and balance sheets needed to be considered an LLC. Clear and easy to grasp, this reference fully describes all technical terms and demystifies the forms and procedures of the LLC. Also covered are entity classification elections and changes, for-profit and at-risk limitation rules, the "like-a-corporation" standard, how to establish "limited liability," and more.
Customer Reviews:
LLCs.......2007-05-06
This book had a few good pointers, but concentrates on California law, which differs from other states in some regards. I was not impressed with the quality of the writing. I would not buy it again.
Not so good.......2007-03-15
Very dry, not particularly insightful, lots of text copied wholesale from the tax code. A better text is
Tax Savvy for Small Business: Year-round Tax Strategies to Save You Money
by Frederick W. Daily
A good book with no index.......2006-07-04
I found the material important and well explained but the diagrams are completely irrelevant and useless. Its focus on California was especially useful for selfish reasons. I also recommend Nolo's "Form Your Own Limited Liability Company" as a general guide that is very well written. Crouch's book is useful if you are in California, however.
Lack of index in any book diminishes its usefulness, especially the ones that deal with how-to material. This one is no exception.
Profits, Taxes, & LLCs.......2006-02-27
The book is very detailed about the financial. Hard to understand and I have several degrees. I have taken graduate course in accounting and was a tax preparer and still found it difficult to understand what he's taking about. Overall it a reference book, but leaves some questions unanswered and might not help in doing the bookkeeping for a new LLC you just formed.
The philosophy of LLC taxation.......2005-07-10
I liked the approach. It's not a recipe for starting an LLC (there are plenty of those out there). It is more like background reading about the philosophy driving how LLCs are taxed, and what that means for how the LLC income is distributed and reported. Lots on maintaining capital accounts. There was a fair amount I ignored -- California and real estate specific information -- but the rest was very helpful. Chapter 5 on tax forms and Chapter 7 on partnership rules were especially useful.
