      Book Description

Intrigued with the possibility of integrating texture in his work, American landscape photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum has a long-standing collaboration with the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute (SERI) in China. This splendidly designed volume describes the history of SERI with illustrations of its traditional embroidery and then proceeds to pair Ketchumís stunning photographic images with their exquisite embroidered counterparts. Essays locate the achievement of the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute within the context of traditional Chinese embroidery and trace the willingness to innovate that has long characterized this remarkable institution.

      4 out of 5 stars ok - but a bit overrated I think.......2004-09-02

I bought this book, sight unseen purely from the rave reviews listed. To be honest I was a bit disappointed with the book. Firstly, Robert Glenn Ketchum's photographs are very average. In fact any 15 year old with a good camera and decent eye could take photo's of this quality. The thing that redeems them is the skill of the needleworkers. Secondly, I just think the book is overated. There's several western needlework books that cover this type of embroidery and have better images in my opinion so I just don't understand the rave. An interesting read, but..........yeah. I wouldn't have paid this much if I'd been able to flick through it first.

5 out of 5 stars Most embroidery doesn't impress me, but............2003-08-17

I'm not all that interested in embroidery, but I enjoy visual excitement. One day while gallery hopping, we came upon a small portion of the work depicted in this book. We were both blown away by the work! Absolutely amazing. I would really like some posters of this work.

For those interested in the embroidery details, it is done with fine silk threads, hand dyed, on various fine fabrics, some of which are so fine you can see through them. Much of the interesting texture and effect is from what they call random stitch embroidery, in which the scenes are depicted by various colored stitches .5 cm (1/4 inch) long running in various random directions, yet they all come together to make the image. Other parts of the images are done by carefully controlled stitch direction to give crisp images. They pick up the light and are quite luminous, some are displayed as screens with light coming from behind. Only the enlargements in the book give a sense of the beauty and amazing technique of the actual pieces.

Oh, and the book is good too. Definitely a 5 star quality coverage of the work, with background information, as described in other reviews. But the work itself is beyond 5 stars. (In the gallery they were priced around the $10,000-$150,000 range, some took several years to complete.)

5 out of 5 stars 5 is not even close to enough.......2003-07-09

Words cannot even begin to describe the beauty of the works of art contained in this book. If you only ever buy one book in your life to just look at the pictures let it be this one. I could sit entranced by this embroidery for hours. I agree with another reviewer who stated that you can't conceive of this art being created by human hands. If you need proof simply look at the cover. That is not a photograph folks, it is embroidered.
The photographs are also quite beatiful. Consider as you look at them that the photo's are trying to capture texture...something very elusive in that medium. In many cases you can barely tell the photo from the embroidery and in others the embroidery is an interpretation of the photo.
I cannot state this enough... this book is truly, truly extraordinary and I don't think that there is anything else like it out there.

      5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2001-09-18

This is, by far, the most beautiful embroidery book I've ever seen anywhere, at any time. It seems impossible that such impressive works of art could have been created. Robert Ketchum's photographs are beautiful, but the embroideries are, indeed, so breathtaking that it's hard to believe real human beings could have worked on them. This is the kind of embroidery I would love to be able to do, but it is so amazing that I know I'll never reach such a high level of expertise (at least not in this lifetime). My thanks to all the people involved in this project for sharing their special gifts with me and anyone else fortunate enough to have purchased this book or, better still, to have seen these works in person.

They're just ordinary exchange students from a far-off land, here to learn about our culture - except their home is a mysterious city on the moon and they each possess fabulous, exotic abilities and appearances. The product of experiments on humanity by an alien culture a millennia ago, the Inhumans are a race governed by the laws of genetics. Here as nowhere else, diversity and individuality are prized beyond compare. The Inhumans have flourished in isolation from humanity within their island kingdom of Attilan on the surface of the moon, but what happens when their king decides to send some of his subjects to Earth to learn about humans? Will they be able to integrate into human culture? More important, will they even try? The next generation of Inhumans star in this atmospheric new ensemble drama. Collects Inhumans #1-6.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  4 out of 5 stars It's a shame really..........2005-10-10

McKeever weaves a believable (for a comic) and enthralling story, involving a colorful cast of teenage characters. Teenage characters who happen to live on the moon. And have super powers.

The plot is strong and well paced, if not a little long-winded. This arc probably didn't need a whole six issues, but in the digest form it's cut down a bit, making it a reasonable length for what goes on.

The characters can be identified with easily, especially by teenagers, but the focus on the characters is a bit off. It isn't clearly shown in this digest if McKeever intended for San to be the main character or Tonaja, or if this is indeed a team book. Later in the series Tonaja takes the spotlight, while still keeping the team aspect of the book alive.

The art is very nice, and the fantastic culture of the Inhumans is explored by the creative and beautiful penicls and inks. This is the type of book where creativity can really be used, building and characters may look quirky and unique. This opportunity was taken advantage of, creating a cohesive and amazing look to the book.

With a solid story, great art, and fun characters, this digest is a winner. I'm disappointed that a second digest hasn't been published, and that the series was cancelled after just over ten issues.

Brian Underdahl's Complete Reference for Macromedia Flash MX serves as a solid cornerstone for the library of new Flash designers. Covering every aspect of building interactive Flash projects from a beginner's perspective, this handy tome is an ideal reference guide for the interactive designer starting his Flash journey.

Underdahl wastes little time getting the reader up and animating with Flash MX and things start to really happen in the "Adding Animation" section of his book. He opens with a short description of Flash's approach to animation, then quickly launches into a short set of tutorials. Before the end, you'll be moving, rotating, scaling and tweening objects all over the screen. The largest part of this seven-part volume is all about efficiency. Tool-by-tool descriptions fill up the first chapter in this section, but the author falls short here by not including the keyboard shortcuts for each tool when they're described. His descriptions and examples, though, are clear, and most are matched with screenshots demonstrating the tool at hand.

Graphics and sound are thoroughly covered, especially importing and optimizing sounds, and using them efficiently within a Flash movie. This is critical, since the misuse of sound files can inflate the size of a Flash movie, as well as impact performance. ActionScript, the underlying programming engine that drives Flash interactivity, is presented clearly in a non-programmer manner. Flash is a unique application that bridges the gap between an animation tool and a programming environment, and lucky is the artist who can plant his feet on both shores. The enclosed CD contains project files and art elements for every chapter, as well as demo versions of Canvas 8 and the Windows versions of ToonBoom Studio and Swift 3D. The CD does not, however, have a searchable PDF version of the book with color pictures. This omission is exacerbated by the lack of color pages, making any discussion of color palettes or color schemes (chapter 6) somewhat theoretical.

Complaints aside, this "Complete Reference" for Flash MX serves as a solid reference book, and should be seriously considered for any novice Flash designer looking for an encyclopedic tome on Flash MX. --Mike Caputo

1 out of 5 stars Boring and makes you feel like you read but didn't learn.......2004-10-26

I got my hands on this book and at first I was so excited because this was one of the first Flash MX 2004 books on the shelves so I just bought it immediately. After reading the introduction, I learnt that this book decided to not cover Flash MX 2004 Professional. Oddly, it wasn't a "Complete" reference after all. Nonetheless, I wanted to get my money's worth so I started reading on.
As much as the book seems to take a more text-based approach to explaining every tid bit of Flash, it fails miserably because it just seems like after reading 20 pages, you learnt something that could have been explained to you in merely 5 pages. I felt like I was wasting my time and eventually I just stopped reading the book, went out and looked for other books available.
If you REALLY want to learn Flash mx 2004, I'd suggest getting a book that takes you through tutorials rather than simply tells you what each thing does and runs you buy a tutorial the author does..
Oh and there is simply not enough screenshots or graphics to go along with the text, either they are uselessly detailed images or they simply dont exist.
I really hope I never come across another Flash MX 2004 book like this again. I wasted 384 pages worth of reading to this book and finally just let it go, I couldn't go on because it became so boring, reading it was like a painful job.

4 out of 5 stars Good Flash MX 2004 Book for both Beginners and Advanced.......2004-03-03

The first thing I liked about this book were the notes and tips in each chapter. Someone could just read the notes and tips and get some pretty good applicable tips on Flash MX. The book begins with the beginner in mind. I found the chapters on sound and video extremely helpful. I too have not read the Actionscript part yet, but know it will help me understand object programming using Actionscript 2.0 better than I do currently! Thanks for a great book!

2 out of 5 stars For basic edition of Flash MX 2004 ONLY.......2003-12-31

This book does not attempt to cover the full edition of Flash MX 2004. If you have the professional version of Flash DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! The book is titled "The Complete Reference" for Macromedia Flash MX 2004 but "Complete" it is not. The book is only 700 pages. I should have purchased the "Bible" series for this application. Osborne books are pretty much hit or miss... and you don't know until you try to look something up.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely GREAT reference book - a TX user.......2003-11-27

I have quite a collection of Brian Underdahl's books and I have always found his writing style to be easy to understand, accurate, and entertaining. I'm not new to Flash, but this book did a good job of introducing me to the changes in this new version of Flash.

One of the other reviews said this has little coverage of Flash ActionScript, but then I noticed the review is from 2002 and seems to be referencing another book. This one has PLENTY of ActionScript coverage- Chapters 20 to 31 to be exact! And these aren't short chapters!

I always try and write up reviews of books I find useful and this one demands a 5-star review. If you're looking for a book that covers Flash in-depth and will get you quickly up to speed (and not just making simple little animations) I can't recommend this book enough.

I am a technology consultant in Houston, TX and I have about 30 books in my collection on Flash alone. Only about 10 are used frequently and this is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars In Constant Use.......2003-04-17

This is one of those books that I use all the time. Because this is the first book I've given 5 stars, I'd better explain.

First, I like the way the book organized itself along the lines that the ActionScript editor or toolbox lists the different ActionScript terms. The parallel makes things easy to find. Second, I like the way the examples are used. For instance, the author explains the geometry behind the cosine of an angle explaining the Math.cos() method and then provides an example that draws a perfect circle. That's a lot better than I get in just about any other book. (Maybe that's more than some need, but I appreciated it.) Third, I like the level range. The beginning of the book is only 2 chapters, but it's a good 2 chapters that provide a quick explanation of ActionScript and scripting. However, further on in the book, it also covers more complex things like registerClass() with a detailed examples. The same is true for all of the new objects like LoadVars().

Finally, I have found myself using the last several chapters covering UI components. Before I got this book, I really didn't use UI Components very much, and now I use them constantly. In fact, those chapters (Pt IV, Chs 14-21)are what I find myself using the most. If this book had nothing but Part IV, the book would have been more than worth it to me.

I think the book is worth 6 stars -- 5 for the first 3 parts and an additional one for the last part covering UI Components.

5 out of 5 stars Good clear, easy-to-find stuff book.......2002-12-02

After Flash 5 ActionScript, I didn't think that it would get much bigger. Flash MX ActionScript is huge, and this book makes it available. The author spends only the first two chapters with the basics of writing ActionScript in the context of Flash MX and makes a nice transition from Flash 5 to Flash MX.

Then, from Chapter 3 to the end of the book's 21 chapters, the author decided to follow the order of actions in the Actions toolbox in the Actions Panel. That makes it very easy to find stuff because it's organized along the same logical patterns as the toolbox. Even so I found myself going to both the detailed TOC and appendix to look up terms, and I never had problems finding what I needed.

Anyone can explain the easy stuff like the old gotoAndPlay() actions, and so I went to the new OOP materials and XML socket section. The OOP stuff was mixed with non-OOP throughout the book, and OOP-related methods like registerClass() were explained in detail and supported with a good example using something that made sense in the context of Flash MX. In fact, the whole book was filled with good examples. Some examples extended over several pages and others were little ones that gave you a quick insight. Sanders is an ace with examples. As for the XML socket material, not only did the explanation explain to me for the first time ever what the blazes a socket server was, it provided a URL where I could download a free socket server, which I did. Then I worked the example, and now I have my own mini-chat in XMLSocket. I'm happy.

The last several chapters were in-depth explanations of the different ActionScript terms used with the new UI Components. Each component got its own chapter, and I found it invaluable for designing with the components. It does not cover re-skinning, but I was able to get the look I wanted by changing every element in the components and I am a big user of UI components. (You can change all the little parts of components like highlight, higlight3D, face, darkshadow, etc. without re-skinning.)

There were a lot of little details I liked in the book. The examples were mixed, interesting, and clarifying. Undocumented terms, like onData with LoadVars(), were included, and I found what I needed. One suggestion for people getting this book: buy some of those little colored tab stickem things to bookmark all of the part of this book you'll need to reference again and again.

                      Book Description

The Dutch (1.d4 f5) is a superb weapon for ambitious players. Black rejects all thoughts of playing for sterile equality, and stakes a territorial claim on the Kingside. Quite often Black's plan can be summarized in one word: Checkmate! This book provides a full repertoire for Black with the Dutch, with the cornerstone being the Leningrad variation, a favorite of GMs Bareev, Gurevich, Malaniuk and Speelman. If you like more than passive resistance with the black pieces, then this book, focusing on variations which maximize Black's potential in detail.

                      5 out of 5 stars Incredible Book.......2004-10-17

Let me say that the Dutch is an excellent, but risky, system that should appeal to people who like to "burn their pants" early. In the dutch, there is no such thing as as a loss that is based on one static factor. All losses are SLAUGHTERS.The Leningrad system is the most riskiest, newest, and most blood thirstiest system in the dutch. Both sides have to play on there toes , as one slip could cost the game for either side. Endgames are hardly never reached in this sytem for game usually last 30 moves. You have to be on your top at tactics. I wouldn't recommend weak players to play the dutch and especially the leningrad. However, if you are tacticaly good and accurate with your moves and love blood thirsty battles and hate endgames. Then I seriously recommend you get the book "The Dutch for the Attacking Player" by Steffen Pedersen. It provides you with a full repertoire against any thing that white can throw at you using the Leningrad system. All of whites major replies and sidelines are covered in detail with complete games and provides the logic behind the moves. But let me remind you.... The Leningrad is extremely risky. I hope this review has aided you in which system to play. Keep in mind that this is my opinian. If you like a rock-solid wall of pawns then play the Stonewall. If you like endgames and quiet play, then play the Classical dutch by all means. If you decide to play the Stonewall, please keep in mind the gaping holes you are letting white have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent repertoire book with Qe8 variation!.......2000-07-21

                      This book is a repertoire book centered around the Leningrad Dutch - a very aggressive (yet slightly risky for both white and black), tactical line. The specific line highlighted is as follows- 1. d4 f5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. g3 g6 4. Bg2 Bg7 5. o-o o-o 6. c4 d6 7. Nc3 Qe8.

This book has three features that I really like-

1)An intro chapter discussing typical middlegame plans, tactics, and various pawn structure that are likely to arise in this variation.

2)It covers many other sidelines such as staunton gambit, english, etc. that one is likely to face in addition to the main line.

3)It has a final chapter with "test" positions so that you can find out how well you have learned the opening.

Warning! This opening is not for the fainthearted! - If you like an all out slug fest where both sides "burn their bridges" early, and you enjoy putting maximum pressure on white's position-then play this opening.

Note: I have had pretty decent results with this opening. I am currently rated in the 1800-1900 USCF range and I find that many of my opponents are not terribly versed in dutch lines- they spend thier time preparing against the Nimzo-Indian, King's Indian, Queen's Gambit, etc. Therefore, an additional bonus in playing the dutch is that I have generally been more familiar with what's going on during the game than my opponent.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on a diffcult opening-line........2000-06-06

This is a repertoire book for black, and it's geared towards the attacking player. The basis of the suggested repertoire is the Leningraddutch (with 7. - Qe8 ), but the more rare continuations after 1.d4/c4/Ktf3 f5 are also covered using 36 commented games. Analysis of typical dutch middlegamepositions are therefore thouroughly covered.

The books starts with a chapter on the common plans in the dutch for both sides, which gives you a jump start in understanding the opening. At the end there are also 9 strategical tests with the motto "How well do you understand the Dutch?", to test you and give you hints on what parts you need to study again. This book does a great job in explaining a difficult opening system to the point where it becomes close to being percieved as simple.

If you are planning on playing the dutch you must buy this book!

4 out of 5 stars Good advice for two types of audiences, see review.......2006-06-23

This book has very good advice that will be most useful to two types of audience. For new graduates, seeking a first professional job it's a quick and useful read. It is also good for the rank and file employee who is too hurried to do in-depth reading, but wants to make some quick and dirty improvements in the way they interact with their boss.

This title is based on sound principles, but it doesn't go into a lot of depth. There are literally 59 different short chapters, each with an often useful worksheet about that area. In a sense, you can use this book to get a 59 point perspective on what you are doing well and where you can make improvements.

For those who are seasoned professionals, a lot of this information will be things they already know. However, quickly and consciously surveying these various performance areas periodically can raise awareness of them.

While I think this book is most useful to the audiences I mentioned, I still think it has merit for everyone. You should just know what you are getting before you buy. Much of this information is repeated in other books, but if you are looking for a quick summary of basics this may be just what you need.

2 out of 5 stars Basic advice with few details.......2004-10-09

The basic premise of Managing Up is a good one: yes there are problem bosses, and the best way to deal with them is to be pro-active and not assume that it's up to them to recognize their deficiencies and change on their own. As much as we want our bosses to change spontaneously, we must recognize that we can always do better in our own work. By being a better employee, we can improve our relationships with our bosses. This is absolutely correct.

Unfortunately, Managing Up chooses breadth instead of depth. With 59 tips that range from "do good work" to "deal effectively with stereotypes and prejudices", it provides few concrete details in each of its short chapters. In one chapter, the authors suggest becoming familiar with such thinkers as Blanchard, Drucker, Weisbord, and Hertzberg (surprisingly, they omit Covey), but do not include a single one of their books in the bibliography and suggested reading list. In another they describe four different types of bosses and suggest that you may need to adapt to your boss's style, but leave it to the reader to determine how to do so. Perhaps this would have been less frustrating if they had included a list of suggested further reading at the end of each chapter.

Managing Up does not sugar-coat its advice. It suggests mediation rather than law suits in cases of discrimination, warning that being right isn't always enough (unless you are fighting for others who come after you). Although there is the occasional innovative tip such as writing a brief weekly report of your accomplishments, much of the advice in this book is common sense. While it's not a bad idea to read some common sense advice every once in a while, especially if you are on bad terms with your boss, many people who take the initiative to read Managing Up will already be doing much of what the book suggests. For the rest, reading Managing Up may be a good use of their time.

4 out of 5 stars handy, realistic, easy read.......2004-05-16

Wasn't preachy and from the writing it's obvious the writer is an old hand at organisational dynamics. It was also written without getting too embroiled in the emotional rambling. I identified with many of the scenarios described, and the advice proved useful. Clear, concise and highly readable.

                      4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-07-21

If your notions of how to get along with your boss stopped at the admiring-the-family-photos-on-the-credenza stage, here's how to move it along. Michael Dobson and Deborah Singer Dobson advance kissing-up to a new, practical level, as they straightforwardly explain their boss-wrangling concepts. You can read the brief chapters in bite-size chunks and each one ends with a worksheet. While these concepts about understanding your boss and playing to the boss's priorities are not particularly innovative, they are useful and accessible. The Dobsons wrote their book as much for the folks in the cubicles as for the fellow in the office with his feet on the desk. Reading this book won't change your boss's personality - but it might blunt his pitchfork. We [...] recommend it to staffers who want to get ahead by getting along with the boss, the gatekeeper to the top. And if that takes a little manipulation, well, hey, it's business.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty good basic reading for rookies.......2001-07-11

I didn't finish reading the book because I had lost my interest in it. Notwithstanding, the contents are all good and correct. However, having worked for more than 4 years now, I've already known all the ingredients need to climb up the ladder. The problem to me is how to do it effectively and efficiently without leaving a kiss up perception, which is hardly covered in this book. However, if you're a "rookie", a first year employee, a fresh graduate, then this might be the book to read so that you can gain an impressive "hello" effect to your managers and colleagues. In fact, you could actually just browse the table of contents to get the meat of the book.
