It's great if it's for a 5-year-old........2007-08-15
I guess I was expecting more.
If you have children, they would get more out of this. It reminded be of learning how to write in grade school. That's about all there is to it.
Writing Glyphs made easier.......2006-11-06
This made the work that I was doing for a Birthday Project for two young ladies much easier
A great book.......2004-06-25
The best I guide to practice your hieroglyphic calligraphy. I love it.
The best I could find.......2004-03-14
This is one of several books on the subject that I bought because I was late on a decorative commission and had to learn how to write hieroglyphs fast. This turned out to be the only book of any value. Using Gardiner's Sign List to organize the symbols into catagories, Fischer first shows a large drawing of the glyph, then shows with a series of sequential sketches how to arrive at the final design. Using his technique, I was able to achieve satisfactory results in a remarkably short time.
Unlike some of the other authors, Fischer does redraw, modify, or try to "reinterpret" the symbols. I compared his hieroglyphs to photographs of tomb and temple walls and found his to be true to the originals.
The 4th edition contains some additional glyphs and information in supplementary references and addenda.
This is a beautifully designed and bound book, worthy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I use this in conjunction with Wilkinson's "Reading Egyptian Art".
Excellent Guide.......2003-12-11
As others have said, this volume is slim and thankfully clear and concise. The glyphs are simplified to make them easier to draw, but still recognizably hieroglyphs (as opposed to cursive forms or hieratic-- and sometimes clearer than Faulkner). There are many larger illustrations that show the glyph in more naturalistic form; these are quite interesting. When the forms varied significantly over time, all versions are shown (i.e., Old Kingdom form, Middle and New Kingdom form(s).) It's very helpful, for writing and reading.

Book Description
This book seeks to examine the ways in which the cinema has defined, mythified and disseminated British national identity during the course of the twentieth century. It takes the form of a series of linked essays which examine chronologically, thematically and by specific case studies of films, stars and genres the complexities and ambiguities in the process of evolution and definition of the national identity. It argues for the creation of a distinctive British national identity both in cinema and the wider culture. But it also assesses the creation of alternative identities both ethnic and regional and examines the interaction of cinema and other cultural forms (music, literature and television).

Book Description
Though known for its fierce polemics and contrarian political voices, one of the most abiding and popular features of The Nation magazine — and something Republicans would consider subscribing to the magazine for — are Frank Lewis’ weekly crossword puzzles which have appeared in the magazine since 1947. This new collection of Lewis’ work — the first in over a decade — will delight Lewis fans and crossword puzzlers alike with his trademark cryptic, punning and anigram-atic style.
Customer Reviews:
Nation Cryptics.......2007-09-08
Mr. Lewis has been puzzling and delighting Nation readers for 50 years. He just keeps getting better and better. Each of the 80 puzzles reprinted here is a little masterpiece.
Different and Harder than Other Cryptic Crosswords.......2007-07-07
First off, the format is horrible. The book is not spiral-bound, but the binding is too tight to keep open easily. The clues are below and to the right of the puzzle grid, so as a right-hander, my hand is always blocking the clues. There are no explanations to the clues in the back, just answer grids, which some may find bothersome.
If you've never done a cryptic crossword puzzle before, start someplace else--101 Cryptic Crosswords: From the New Yorker is excellent.
Frank Lewis apparently has been making cryptic crosswords since the late 1940s. He doesn't play by standard cryptic crossword rules. (Maybe they were developed afterwards?) You aren't guaranteed two "definitions" in a clue (there may be one or three), and there may be no straight definition anywhere in the clue. In addition, he often combines multiple words in the grid together and gives one clue. (e.g. NEO in one place and GOTHIC in another, and one clue that produces NEOGOTHIC). In essence, you have to obtain a lot more long answers than short answers, which, for me, makes the puzzles harder to solve.
The clues are very fun and playful, but I find the puzzles much more difficult than normal cryptics, because of the abnormal clue format.
Try before you buy.......2007-06-27
I would encourage cryptic fans unfamiliar with Lewis's puzzles to find a copy of the Nation and try out its puzzle before buying this book. Those used to the clues of puzzle writers like Henry Hook, Fraser Simpson, Emily Cox, Henry Rathvon, and Richard Maltby, Jr., will find Lewis's clues substantially different. Lewis's clues are long and rambling and contain a lot of stuff that is neither part of the definition nor part of the word-play. I suppose that some people might find the extra challenge of sorting the wheat from the chaff enjoyable, but I suspect that many (like me) won't.
great cryptics for Americans.......2007-03-17
I am fairly new to cryptics, but have really enjoyed this book. There is a real sense of humor in many of the clues, and most are fairly to very clever. Sometimes downright devious - in a good way. I find the British cryptics too obscure because of cultural differences, and I love the fact that this book is more accessible to Americans. There are many challenging clues, it wouldn't be an interesting collection if there were not, but I do not think most experienced cryptic fans would find it so difficult that they cannot eventually solve the puzzles. I have the benefit of a British spouse experienced with cryptics who can help me. Those who are starting out, and don't have that kind of help available, might want to invest in a guide which explains cryptics before tackling this book. Others will most likely find it the right blend of challenging and accessible.
Diabolical.......2007-01-09
I am a cryptic puzzle fan, but the definitions in this one are so obscure as to be improbable and virtually impossible to do. I gave it to my sister-in-law. Haven't heard from her since.

Customer Reviews:
The essence of modern leadership knowledge.......2007-04-24
In this great book, you will find the essence of Level 5 leadership ("Good to Great" by Jim Collins), the core principles espoused by Steven Sample in "The Contrarian's Guide to Leadership," and the leader-as-water concept echoed in Peter B. Vaill's "Learning as a Way of Being: Strategies for Survival in a World of Permanent White Water." Indeed, this small text contains a bookshelf-worth of leadership wisdom. I only wish that the book editor and corrector were a bit more diligent and took out the numerous typos, before this book was published.
If Only the Business World Would Read This Book.......2007-04-08
Every person in a leadership role, every boss, every CEO--in fact, everyone needs to read this book. If big companies as well as small would practice the concepts in The Tao of Leadership, this world would be a much, much nicer place to live in. -- Sam Yulish, author of WHERE HAVE ALL THE HIPPIES GONE? and THE HESITANT PSYCHIC.
The Tao of Leadership: Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching Adapted for a New Age.......2006-07-25
Nice little book to keep on hand for those trying times. Has lots of very relevant points - you just have to stop, think and put it in context for you.
It's also a book that allows you to look at the world around you and see the impact others have on their environment (some good & some bad) - again you have to stop, think and observe.
Can't Lead Without It.......2003-12-20
I've used this book for over 10 years as my leadership support tool. As General Manager of a $200MM business, I need perspective and support on a daily basis - and Heider's book provides it. I love that the persective is NOT a management flavor of the week, but a view on leadership that stands the test of time.
I've given this book as a gift to peers, friends, and family for years - just purchased copies last week for my new staff. It provides us with a common framework and a vision of where we're taking our organization.
Thanks, Heider, for great thoughts, great lessons, and great leadership!
Great Source, Bad Translation.......2002-09-10
I have read several translations of the Tao Te Ching and was very disappointed in this read. I feel as if much of the strengths from the original text are lost in this author?s choice of words and examples. This translation loses the beauty and appreciation of nature that the original texts focused on. (He refers to calculators and computers in some instances) I was also bothered by his addition of the Christian understanding of God as a character in his translations. Over all I really recommend finding a better translation than this to read if you are a first timer. (such as translation by Victor H. Mair) It is a bit more of a heavy read but caries over the interesting paradoxes that make the ancient document so intriguing.
Also read ?The wisdom of insecurity? By Allan Watts (a Beatnik) if you like the idea of Taoism
