Book Description
This new edition of the classic reference is enhanced with hundreds of new color photographs depicting a wide array of collectors' treasures. Victorian hatpins, required to fasten large hats, and the holders used to store them when not in use, are presented in close views with extensive text to interpret their use and place them among popular historical fashion accessories. Precious and everyday materials alike are found in hatpins, and the holders are generally glass or porcelain. This new book will be a valuable aid to collectors and all who are interested in period costume, jewelry, and memorabilia

Hat Pin Bible.......2005-12-14
This 200 page compendium complete with photographs, illustrations, history (including legal rulings and laws regarding the hat pin's use as a weapon), etc. is the hat pin fancier's bible.
The hatpin and hatpin holder collectors bible.......1998-10-05
This superb book will interest the collector and historians alike. It is a great tribute to Lillian Baker, the queen of hatpin collectors. She passes on her tremendous knowledge and experience with the aid of a well catalogued album. This shows colour plates of many hatpins indexed by the different types of materials used. Gold, silver, brass, glass, porcelain, ivory and many other hatpins adorned with diamonds, pearls, amethysts, etc show what a diversity of collections are possible. They are catalogued by type, manufacturer, style or period over the past 150 years or so. A historical perspective on their development shows how they were made and the many types of legitimate fixings. Examples of fake hatpins are also shown. There is also a similar catalogue of a vast range of hatpin holders and vanity sets also in colour. The book is worth the money for the pictures alone and is what you would expect of the author who managed to persuade friends with rare and expensive or unusual hatpins and holders to allow them to be catalogued. There is even an explanation of the origins of pinmoney and the need for hatpin to be one word not two. The only disappointment is the lack of any indicator of values, as this was also the authors area of expertise. This book is unlikely to be repeated so buy it now - it will be a collectors piece soon.

Book Description
This contains the Red Sonja tales from Marvel Feature #1-7, presented in glorious, fully re-mastered color. These tales are where it all begins, and help set the stage for the current Red Sonja series! This is a must have collection of never before reprinted material, featuring a cover by Frank Thorne. Plus, legendary Red Sonja writer and former Editor-in-Chief, Roy Thomas, provides an introduction!
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This ain't the Frazetta Sonja, that is for sure. Still, entertaining She-Devil slayage. She is far more pneumatically inflated, and it is a bit hard to imagine the lithe deadly warrior, famed for her blinding speed dragging this around, so to speak. However, it definitely looks good, which, in this case is the cheesecake point, no doubt about it. Stories are solid, hard, pragmatic warrior tales as well.
The other reviews on this page are for the wrong book!.......2007-07-04
For some reason all the other reviews on this page are for the wrong book. Apparently there was some confusion in the past and no one has ever updated this page. The artwork in the Carey/Oeming/Rubi book looks better than the artwork in the Thomas/Jones/Thorne book, which was recolored but not very skillfully.
Unlike that book, there is no Conan appearance in this one. I think Dynamite publishing bought the rights to the Red Sonja character only, though I suppose an exception was made that allowed them to reprint the story featuring Conan in the Thomas/Jones/Thorne book, which reprinted the original Marvel Comics.
One annoying flaw in this book is that some of the pages are printed out of order. The pages are not numbered, but on page (I think it is) #53 Red Sonja says "It's hard for me to laugh with this knife in my chest" and it makes no sense because the knife only gets stuck in her chest three pages later!
Looks like the right product to me........2007-04-17
Anyone who's upset that this isn't the "right" item being advertised needs to LOOK MORE CLOSELY before clicking the "buy" button.
This is EXACTLY what I ordered with STUNNING art by Neal Adams and Frank Thorne. If you want classic Red Sonja, and classic Frank Thorne printed on glossy paper stock with bright coloring...you'll love it.
SONJA BACK AFTER THIRTY YEARS!.......2007-02-17
With Dynamite Entertainment producing new material for Red Sonja, The She-Devil with a sword, it was only natural that they would secure the rights to reprint the old Marvel Comics material from the 1970's. Now one thing we should be clear on is that despite popular opinion, Conan creator Robert E. Howard did not create Red Sonja, at least not the Red Sonja we know today. This is explained in the introduction by Roy Thomas. Howard's Red SONYA was a character in one of Howard's many historical adventures, actually set in the 16th century. Roy Thomas is responsible for actually creating the Sonja of the Hyborian age using Howard's creation as a blueprint.
This volume reprints the Red Sonja stories from Marvel Feature # 1 - 7 that ran from 1975 - 1976. The opening tale features absolutely stunning artwork by Neal Adams and Esteban Maroto. It's the best looking story in the volume as Adams brings his gritty realism to the character and it looks fantastic with the re-mastered color. Sonja is duped by a King into returning a precious tiara. Her reward is to be tossed into his harem. You can imagine how well this goes over with Red!
Dick Giordano handles the art on the second story, "The Temple of Abomination" as Sonja discovers an ancient ruined temple populated by horrific goat men.
Frank Thorne takes over as the artist as of the third story and would go onto become perhaps the best-known Sonja artist. Thorne's art was a radical departure from the Adams and Giordano stories. Thorne has a more whimsical style, almost an animated look. He didn't have the fine detail of Adams but made up for it by giving us perhaps the most buxom Sonja ever!
In a two-part tale, Sonja takes a key off a brigand she kills and eventually comes in contact with a witch who informs her that the key will bring to life a fantastic mechanical construct that looks like an Egyptian golem. The witch steals the key from Sonja and brings the construct to life, ordering it to kill Red!
The final story is another two-parter that guest stars Conan and Belit, Queen of the Black Coast as the trio are all seeking the Book of Skelos but not working together. There are very open hostilities between Belit and Sonja and soon she's also crossing blades with Conan.
It was a pleasure to read these stories again after so many years...over thirty to be exact. They're not in a class with Thomas' Conan stories from the same period, but they are good, swords & sorcery fun and I'm ecstatic that Dynamite has reprinted them.

Customer Reviews:
It's a useful book.......2002-04-07
... some [of the quotes] can be claimed to be 'negative', but they are actually quite true. If you want motivating quotes, get a motivational book! There is Anthony Robbins and Stephen R. Covey for that.
If you're looking for a quotation book that will help in speeches, conversation or essays, this is a useful book to have. The supposed 'negative' comments are so true when you think about it, and those that you find completely untrue are really there for the humour only. The quotes about girls may get a little painful if said mentioned in a grave manner. But someone who says "Attention girls: Always save a boyfriend for a rainy day -- and another one in case it doesn't rain" with a wide smile on his face, ending a speech.
I strongly suspect that the crowd will be in laughter rather than angry at that. There are some very meaningful quotes too, like "It's better to look where you're going than to see where you've been". This book isn't bad at all!
One thing though, that I don't like about this book is that it doesn't attribute who the quotes are from. If that is important to you, then don't get this book. For those who find that it is extremely important, yet want this book badly, you can simply type in the whole quote in any search engine on the internet and viola, you'll find websites with these quotes and the proper attributions.
Get this book if you want nice quotes without attributes, and quotes that you can use to humour many people (some are outrageously hilarious while being so true). Get it if you want to boost wrtings, and of course learn from the profound minds who wrote these quotes.
the book of quips... dont get it.......2001-09-14
this book was great SIKE it was bad dont get it
Come On People, It's not THAT Bad ..........2001-07-25
After reading the negative reviews on this site, I'm almost ashamed to say that I have found this book to be helpful in the past. The quips and quotes about church and Christianity were cute, and most of the quotes had more substance and meat than other quote books. I haven't noticed the overt sexism toward women that others have mentioned, although it should be stressed that every quote book is going to have its share of dumb and trifling remarks. Use with caution.
Rev. Marc Axelrod
The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is much better!.......2000-01-14
Most of the quotations are boring or put downs. "The extravagant girl usually makes a poor mother and a bankrupt father." Any girl can be glamorous. All she has to do is stand still and look stupid." "There's nothing consistent about human behavior except its tendency to drift toward evil." If you are looking for more positive quotes for personal use or public speaking a much better resource is THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. It has a topical guide with 96 topics arranged alphabetically. Each topic is amplified by one or more verses from the book of Proverbs. There is also an in-depth commentary with many historical drawings that give you a sense of the culture of the time. In the back are 6 popular translations of Proverbs in parallel.
not the best book of quotes..........2000-01-13
To it's credit there are a lot of quotes in here and some made me think. But, none of the quotes are attributed (I like to know who I'm quoting) and I found I didn't like 9 out of 10 of the quotes. Most are simplistic or negative. I'd suggest folks looking for a book on quotes buy a book called _Great Quotes from Great Leaders_. Much smaller book, only about 100 pages, but probably has more useful quotes in it than this one.

Book Description
One of the most original, rebellious, and idiosyncratic directors in the American cinema, Nicholas Ray lived and worked with an intensity equal to that of his films. Best known for his direction of James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), he is also well regarded for his cult western Johnny Guitar (1954), and such prestigious noir classics as On Dangerous Ground (1951). I Was Interrupted offers a provocative selection of the filmmaker's writings, lectures, interviews, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Convinced me of Ray's worth........2004-02-22
Iýll be honest. I signed up for a course on Nick Ray and Orson Welles course because Orson Welles fascinated me, and I figured that Ray guyýs film ýRebel Without a Causeý was pretty good, so I could deal with that side of things as long as I got my Welles fix. I can only assume that, while many people can readily acknowledge the importance of Welles, few would express more than a blank face upon hearing Rayýs name. In that regard, this book had the difficult task of making me personally see the importance of Ray.
While Ray impressed me through his own passion for his work, it unsettled me a bit that his wife was the one who convinced me of his importance. This is not meant to be a sexist statement, it unnerves me because Susan was not really around for the majority of Rayýs career, and I normally would not weigh the opinions of her or anyone else in her position too heavily. Sheýs a bystander! A biased bystander! But while she could have heaped praise and adulation upon her deceased husband, she didnýt. And I appreciated that. Susanýs sincere account of her time with her husband left me with more of an impression of the troubled filmmaker than any straightforward, three-times removed scholarly production of a biography ever could. Facts and figures are all well and good and, sure, they are necessary to outline the where and when of the filmmaker, but Susanýs personal account was able to do what no fact could, and that was bring the man to life. I only wish that she had been around Ray for a longer period of time, giving more insight into his life as a youth working on films and what he was like in his heyday, but then, I wish for a lot of things.
In fact, Susanýs portion of the book may have spoiled me. I found it a bit difficult to make it through the other ýauthorsý areas, with Eisenschitz providing that aforementioned ýfacts and figuresý version of a biography. Straightforward, to the point, void of emotion. Eisenschitz does not even necessarily look at Ray as a man, but more as a figure of production, with the results of his life taking precedence. An account such as this tends to distract from the human aspect of creation and creativity, and without Susanýs or Nickýs own accounts, I would have left feeling quite unfulfilled. I was reminded of when I learned about historical figures in high school, thinking of them more as lifeless ýcharactersý who did specific things rather than human beings who lived their lives.
Then there was Rayýs section.
I had trouble trying to make something of Rayýs own accounts, his diary entries giving me that same voyeuristic feeling I felt while reading the Welles/Bogdonovich interviews. I am wholly grateful that these words were given an opportunity to hit the page, for no one can talk better about themselves then, well, themselves. I wonder what it would have been like to be a student of Rayýs, and I found myself thinking back to the days when I was more involved in acting and theatre, and how effective a teacher such as this would have been on me. For all of his quirks and deviations from the norm, Rayýs tutelage would have undeniably been priceless. However, despite some of the more personal touches within Rayýs part, I still felt as
though Susanýs was much more powerful and enriching.
The three authors of the text both elevated and hindered it. It gave readers the ability to see the filmmaker from a variety of
perspectives, even using Rayýs own words, but at the same time it fragmented the ýstoryý so to speak, making it difficult at times to follow smoothly.
I may have fell for the Welles, but Iýll stay for the Ray.
Ray proves himself to be a great film-maker........1999-10-30
Nick Ray has been forgotton by many and only remembered as 'the guy who directed "Rebel Without a Cause"'. True, "Rebel..." is a great film, but it is by no way the best of Ray's films. This book gives a new-comer to Ray an intriguing glimpse at his moments of genius from the inside out, giving them a taste of his films and then making them desperate to see them. For a more informed veiwer it embellishes Ray's work, giving personal insight into the complex films. Ray shows that his belief in serious film making (which the French Cahiers du Cinema critics lauded as auterism) was committed and honest. The resulting films are wonderful and unique, as is this book, which is informative, fascinating and sometimes tragic. Read it.

Customer Reviews:
Solve the case and save wear and tear on your thumbs.......2007-02-19
Very thorough guide to all the steps you need to take to master this violent noir thriller.
Detective Max Payne returns to fight the crime world. Love comes calling, as the gumshoe's heart is under siege as well this time.
Helped me beat some of the hardest puzzles in the game. I turned to the guide whenever it seemed like I was stuck at an impossible spot.
Max is one of my favorite video characters. This game is a rare intelligent thriller. If you're tired of the same rocket-launcher binges against the same monsters and aliens, get into the murkiest world of all: the criminal mind.
Blow-By-Blow Depression.......2004-01-11
Reviewing a strategy guide for a game you are lukewarm about is one of those piquant experiences. Especially when the guide is better than the game. Unfortunately, Max Payne 2 failed to grab me. I didn't find it particularly difficult either. If you go everywhere and try everything you will eventually figure everything out. Except for maybe the last 15 minutes.
So here is a guide, put together by Tim Bogenn, that is a clear, easy to use walkthrough. One could almost fault it for a lack of emphasis on strategy, since it simply tells you what to do each step of the way. The only source of confusion is that Begenn chose not to provide maps, and sometimes the pictures aren't as graphic as they should be.
But if you need a guide, this will carry you through. It includes information on the advanced modes and weapons as well. Since there are exactly 12 weapons there really isn't anything left out. So this is a first for me - a five star rating for a guide to a game which I only gave 3 stars. Go figure!

Different from Mac version.......2002-10-06
The book is composed of hard to see screenshots with commentary. The screenshots and descriptions are quite different form the Mac OS X version. It was somewhat helpfull but there are sites online that do a better job.
To the MAX.......2002-05-08
When you play Max Payne one of the first things you might notice is the way the blood splatters. It is very cool and this is where the Max Payne(TM) Official Strategy Guide comes into play. It shows you how to get the most from your weapons, whats the best way to take out the bad guys(SPLATTER), and most important when to do that MATRIX-type effect that you can only do on MAX PAYNE.
Trust me with this guide you will get the max out of your MAX PAYNE. You just can't go wrong.
This payne is the best.......2002-01-17
This guide is very accurately detailed. Has almost every cheat in it. Also the guide has very good info. Bottom Line: Definetely get this guide.
Book Description
Foreword by Dave Ulrich For all the theories and talk about making human resources a strategic component of business, in most organizations it's still viewed as a support function -- and a costly one at that. This book presents a nine-step roadmap to making HR a true strategic partner, drawn from the author's years of experience at major organizations. Christensen simplifies HR hierarchies by aligning myriad functions with five fundamental processes, and answers key questions including: * How do we get line management engaged and build a partnership between managers and HR? * How do we acknowledge, address, and overcome weaknesses in HR functions and processes? * How do we resolve tensions between generalists and specialists so that they can join forces toward common goals? The book includes a detailed account of how the roadmap was implemented at Hallmark. This case study shows how a real HR department reached an often-stated but rarely-achieved goal: that! of becoming an indispensable partner and driver of company growth. Readers will find much food for both thought and action in this revelatory book.
Customer Reviews:
Re-Inventing Human Resources.......2006-05-10
Human Capital is a trendy term for valuing the "soft assets" of the business -- the people. Ralph's book clearly outlines the strategy and mission that the Human Resource function has in realizing that value for the business. He outlines five strategic components of an HR strategy and offers a practical approach for transforming/prioritizing the work of HR into a strategic offering that aligns to the business needs.
This book connects the multiple HR sub-disciplines and provides the professional with a common roadmap for the HR community. Most importantly, it raises the key leadership issues that must be addressed to execute the HR mission (punctuated with his learning's). The book's integrated and practical focus is a welcomed addition to the HR community.
Thorough Look at the Evolution of HR.......2006-03-08
Many people view the typical human resource department as an administrative heavy-hitter, home to experts in processing forms and muddling through paperwork. Employees who want to sign up for health benefits, contribute to a company's 401K or ask a question about vacation or sick days make a beeline to HR. That has always been part of HR's role. But the business landscape is changing rapidly. HR needs to reach beyond its traditional duties and become an integral part of an organization's strategic planning. Author Ralph Christensen, a former corporate senior vice president, says it isn't easy for an HR department to make the transition to becoming a strategic partner. But as painful as the process might be, it's necessary for HR to move forward and evolve. Reading Christensen's book won't change things overnight, but we believe that if you want your company to stay ahead of the curve, this book deserves a prominent place on your shelf.
