Book Description
Well-researched and stocked with art images, the eighth edition of Artworks for Elementary Teachers serves elementary education majors for whom this may be a first course in art. It provides introductory experiences both in knowing how to create art and how to respond to it. The four areas of study in discipline-based art education--aesthetics, art production, art criticism and art history--are covered thoroughly.
Customer Reviews:
Good ideas for your students.......2000-12-17
I love the thought of this book -- an art book for teachers who may not know much about art, but are planning on teaching art to their students. It's a great idea, and the book covers a great deal of information in a thin volume, from the principles of art, to the schools of artists and their works, to methods used to create art, to visiting the museum.
The book also contains suggested projects for your elementary school art students, as well as jumping-off points for discussion and activity. I only wish the book had even more ideas, but perhaps that is another book!
If you are a teacher who wants to teach art, but doesn't know much about it, and doesn't know where to begin, I suggest beginning with this book. It's a crash course not only in art, but in teaching art to elementary students and instilling a love of art within your students.

Book Description
Amy Unbounded: Belondweg Blossoming collects issues 7-12 of Rachel Hartman's award-winning comic book, and includes an introduction by Linda Medley, a dramatis personae for new readers, and a few extra pages of silliness at the back.
Belondweg Blossoming follows the lives of Amy and her neighbor Bran Ducanahan the summer they turn ten. Amy has begun reading the national epic, Belondweg, about a semi-mythical queen of the same name who united Goredd and saved her people from invaders. Amy only wishes her own life were half as exciting. But how is life supposed to live up to literature when your mother is a semi-domesticated barbarian, all the knights you know are banished, and the only dragon you have ever met is a geeky grad student?
Join Amy as she dances the Two-foot, wears a really ugly bridesmaid's dress, becomes friends (in spite of everything!) with Bran, imitates the patron saint of ducks, flees from rampaging sheep, learns that love doesn't always conquer all, chugs buttermilk, and begins to understand that even Belondweg didn't have to save the world all by herself.
Winner of the 2001 Xeric Grant.
Customer Reviews:
I cannot believe that this wonderful graphic novel has not .......2005-03-26
had any reviews or attention on Amazon.com since 2002. Some prescient person purchased this once and future classic of graphic novels for our library's collection where I discovered it. I bought a copy for my nieces and sent it to them.
My sister and nieces have read it out loud together five times! The phrase "lead on rabbit man" has entered into their personal family language and I have been elevated to the Favorite Aunt Hall of Fame on the strength of that gift.
The literary world should be beating a path to Rachel Hartman's door. Movie producers should be begging for the privilege of committing her delightful creation to film. And there should be sequels to it. Why OH WHY is there not even one sequel?
Buy this! Read it! Give it to your favorite girl children AND boy children! THIS IS A CLASSIC! DO YOU HEAR ME! A CLASSIC OF CHILDREN'S LITERATURE COMPARABLE TO ANY OLD HARRY POTTER BOOK OUT THERE OR YET TO BE.
AND RACHEL HARTMAN, IF YOU ARE STILL OUT THERE SOMEWHERE, WRITE AND DRAW A SEQUEL! IF YOU DO, WE WILL BUY IT AND READ IT! I PROMISE YOU.
The graphic novel as legitimate literature! Brava!.......2002-06-07
The subtly wry humor and wit of this collection will charm even the most hidebound traditionalist. There are echoes of Dickens, Austen, even Chaucer here. Hartman's characters, lively on their own and only in text, vibrantly dance with solidly human expression across the panels of this graphic novel. Amy herself is a heroine cut from the same fabric as Anne Shirley, Hermione Granger, Dorothy Gale, Lessa, and, as Linda Medley points out in her nostalgic introduction, Jo March; yet uniquely a 21st Century girl living in a mostly medieval fantasy. This is absolutely the book for those who shun and dismiss the graphic novel as a legitimate literary form; minds will change! A must-have for any comic art or graphic novel collection, readers of Neil Gaiman, Terri Windling, Ellen Datlow, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Patricia Wrede, and Anne McCaffrey, to mention only the merest few, will love this effort. We must have more from Ms. Hartman and soon.
Wow!! This is great!!.......2002-05-08
I love Belondweg Blossoming, I wish there were ten more books just like it. I'm showing it to all my friends and making them buy copies!
I love the characters -- real people, good people, with complex lives that have profundity and humor. I love the drawings. I love the writing -- poetic, real, able to spin that web of good literature, where the words feel magical.
This is great! I'm in love! (With Foughfaugh, gosh what a hunk!)
A book worth reading and re-reading.......2002-05-06
I borrowed this book knowing nothing about Amy Unbounded, but after the first two chapters I was hooked. It is deceptively simple at first: a fun and interesting story told by a child who doesn't necessarily pick up on all the subtleties of the adults' conversations around her. Though I enjoyed reading the book the first time from Amy's perspective, I enjoyed re-reading it even more when I knew what to look for.
I highly recommend this book. It may take a chapter or two to keep the characters straight (the guide at the beginning helps) but once the story gets going it's very enjoyable!
I immediately sought out the prequel mini-comics so I could find out how it all started. Hopefully they'll also be released as a matching book some day...
Not just for comic readers.......2002-04-27
I'm not a big fan of graphic novels, or comics in general. But when a friend told me that Hartman's "Amy Unbounded" had the literary merit of Dickens, in spite of being full of cartoons, I had to try it.
First of all, this is not a cheap flimsy comic. This is a *thick*, 200+ page paperback, professionally bound and printed. It's the sort of thing meant to keep for years, or give as a gift.
"Amy Unbounded" tells the story of a somewhat precocious 10-year old girl living in the fictional medieval land of Goredd. Amy's friends include Bran the Icky Boy Next Door, a scholarly dragon travelling incognito, her uncle the exiled knight, and a plethora of fascinating Goreddis.
Through the eyes of young Amy we see the hopes, disappointments, limitations, and human character of women and men living in a medieval society.
In spite of its fictional setting, the book seems packed with extremely well-researched tidbits on medieval life, farming, clothing, and society.
I approached this work as a novel, and not as a comic book. The story is outstandingly strong on its own. But for those who are more visually oriented will enjoy the carefully rendered artwork.
I would give this book an even higher rating if the web site would let me!

Twisted Tales from Shakespeare.......2007-02-07
The fact that I've been searching for this book for several years is testimonial to its timeless charm. I read this book 25 years ago and have wanted to own it for quite sometime. Now that I finally found it on Amazon, I'm delighted that I can share it with my high school children who have heard so much about the book from me over the years. The book kept me in fits of laughter and I've never viewed Shakespeare's plays the same way again. Besides being funny, the stories actually convey the real plot though presenting them in an irreverent light. There are also a lot of unnecessary footnotes included. A must read for ages 13 and above.
Love Twisted Tales.......2005-01-30
I read Twisted Tales many years ago and loved it. Richard Armour has made the Shakespeare plays a hilarious read. When my daughter was in the second grade, she mentioned something about Shakespeare and I said I had a very funny book about his plays which I would give to her when she was older. She insisted on reading the book then anyway, loved it and goes back to it frequently. She is now 16 and recently asked for the book again!
I actually came to the Amazon website to look for more books by Richard Armour. We definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves puns, jokes and great humor, all at the expense of the great Shakespeare plays. You can even follow all the plot twists and characters in Midsummer Nights Dream.
laughs from the past.......2001-11-20
Even my favorite bookstore can't find me this one. I hadn't thought of this book in years; my 14-year-old son had an assignment to rewrite the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, and it reminded me of this book. I must find it for him. I have always loved Shakespeare and deplore what passes for literature these days, so my recommendation for this book may seem odd, but this book is a must-read for all Shakespeare lovers. Let down your hair and enjoy it!
I'm almost getting teary..........2001-03-14
I read Armour's books over and over again when I was younger, they are *so* hysterical and brilliant, and I was so happy to read that there are others who remember and love his books, I felt as if I was among long-lost friends...the books must be published again!
An abolute classic of literary humor.......2001-01-29
If you've ever enjoyed reading and/or seeing Shakespeare, or if you feel you've suffered terribly studying his plays in school, this book is for you. Going through several plays scene by scene (sometimes line by line), Armour finds humor even in the Bard's most serious moments. He also writes short introductory pieces to each play and a wonderful introduction. This book, along with Armour's "The Classics Reclassified," should be back in print to be enjoyed by the new generation and the ones that preceded it.

As You Like It.......2002-11-19
This book is a must read for all those who've read Shakespeare. One word of caution though: Unless you've read and understood the bard's plays vis a vis Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet etc, you won't understand the humor that comes through in Armour's witty dialogues. It helps if you knew a bit of Shakespeare's life/background as well. Chuckles at every few lines are inevitable, so get ready for some curious glances if you read this in public. Altoough Armour gives a comical interpretation to shakespeare's plays, its obvious that he's "not come to bury Shakespeare but to honor him." :-)

Brevity is the soul of wit.......2007-06-24
My copy of this wonderful book was handed down to me from my grandmother. The cover is half torn off, and it has received much love from myself and my friends from the time I was 13 or so. The book re-interprets such plays as "Merchant of Venice", "Romeo and Juliet", "Hamlet", "Othello", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", and "MacBeth", poking fun at their plots in a witty and intelligent way. It did, however, leave me thinking that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were identical twins, an impression which has never quite left me.

Book Description
A companion to the successful volumes on the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, Stars in Blue and Stars in the Corps, this book is filled with celebrity profiles of motion picture stars who served in the U.S. Army and air services from World War I through the Vietnam War. Many readers will discover for the first time details of the contributions made by Audie Murphy, Charlton Heston, Jimmy Stewart and many others. Most remarkable is the large number of celebrities who chose to serve their country in a military capacity--especially during World War II--instead of continuing their lives of luxury in Hollywood. With the previous two books, this work completes the picture of the military experience of movie stars in the United States.
Find out about Ronald Reagan as an officer in the Army Air Corps Reserve producing training films for pilots, and Elvis Presley's time as a sergeant, and how Clark Gable, a B-17 gunner, almost became a casualty during a bombing mission over Germany. Rarely have the lives of movie stars been so honestly portrayed and with such interesting anecdotes and photographs of their military experiences. Encyclopedic in scope, many of these portraits are based on interviews with the stars and their families, and, to assure authenticity, on official reports and documents. Even the most avid movie buff will be surprised and delighted by the little-known facts presented here, and military buffs and historians will be impressed by the often difficult and sometimes dangerous work of these celebrities.

Customer Reviews:
Essential views and reviews by one of the great art music critics of our time.......2005-08-25
More provocative and insightful food for thought by Tim Page, whose "Music from the Road" remains one of my all-time favorite music reads.
One of the most important books I've read in a while..........2002-11-28
I've been gaining a greater appreciation for classical music over the last year or two, so this book could not have come at a better time for me. I first heard of Tim Page back in September, when I heard his 1982 Glenn Gould interview on the bonus disc of the new "State of Wonder" CD, which brings together Gould's 1955 and 1981 recordings of Bach's "Goldberg Variations." While that interview sounded a bit awkward and overly pre-planned, it did reveal some wonderful things about Gould the performer and music fan. I decided to find out more about Mr. Page.
This book is what I discovered, and boy am I glad I did. I covers a variety of writings by Page, mostly about classical music, some of them essays, some concert reviews. I loved his chapter on Sibelius -- it made me drag out my hardly-ever-played copy of Symphony #4 and gain a huge appreciation for it. His chapter on Messiaen made me a Messiaen fan. His article on Kevin Oldham, the composer who contracted AIDS, was deeply moving. He may not have won any conservative classical fans with his candid observations about Vladimir Horowitz, but I for one appreciated the dissenting view. I loved the chapter "Radical Music That Will Remain That Way." With all the corny how-to guides to "accessible" classical music, it was nice to see somebody write about the hard stuff.
Page doesn't stop with just classical music. He also expresses a love for rock music, albeit the more daring and exciting of the genre. He writes about Captain Beefheart, Magnetic Fields, Frank Sinatra and the High Llamas, among others. In his mind (as it should be), non-classical music shouldn't be looked down on by classical fans -- unless it's the paint-by-numbers stuff that you hear so much on the radio. Page acknowledges true originals, regardless of their musical leanings.
I could go on and on. There's so much about this book to love. Anyone with a budding interest in classical music who would like to expand their horizons would gain much from reading this book.
Thank you, Tim Page.

I haven't gotten all the way through the book but it scared me enough not to want to go through the effort of inventing and marketing something.
An Essential Guide for Inventors.......2007-01-07
This book is an essential investment for enabling the inventor to take the right steps, and beware of the pitfalls of rip-off marketing companies and scams, with the thousands of dollars they charge.
The Special Bonus Workbook enables you to get started right away, and numerous Bookmark references refer you to the main part of the book for more detail and with many Words of Wisdom.
Another useful inclusion are the printable versions of the worksheets from the website for proceeding with commercialization of the product.
Valuable contacts of Local Inventors Organizations are also listed to help support inventors.
Finally, quoting from the book, "If you perform the exercises in the Workbook enough times, before you know it the process will flow intuitively. Interviewing people, who you have never met, can actually be fun, and you can make new friends. So relax and enjoy yourself.
Very helpful with step by step procedures.......2006-09-22
I recently purchased this book, to market one of our company product ideas. When I picked up the book locally at barnes and Nobles, I was a bit reluctant by the quality of the paper and the print. But within hours I was at my office, reading it, and it has abolutely good information. The "words of wisdom", "tricks of the trade" tips on each page are very helpful.
One can be in business without understanding many critical aspects of invention and marketing. Being a professional services company so far, this book is helpful for me when I'm venturing into new product inventions, manufacturing and marketing.
The books takes the reader step by step with real examples of the authors experience and points out the pros and cons of various scenarios.
It also has a comprehensive workbook for every section of the book (convered as a separate module at the end of the book) for the inventor to document and prepare for everything.
Wonderfully written book. After browsing through few books, I purchased this one. I also got some other related books. But haven't gone through them yet. I'll review them after I read through them.
The author, Ronald has truly manifested his experience for many of us to learn without re-inventing the invention wheel and suceeding without too many trials and errors.
This Updated Version has Patent and Marketing Workbook.......2006-03-05
I found and read the first version of "The Inventor's Bible" in my local library. The book was full of so much relevant and detailed information that I knew I had to own the updated version. When it arrived, I was pleased to discover that the book included a "Patent and New Product Marketing Workbook" to help readers evaluate and profit from their inventions. Even better, you can download the pdf versions of the workbook pages from the publisher's website (Tenspeedpress). When you get to the site, search for Inventor's Bible, then click the book's title on the page that returns, and then click on the link for the complementary Inventor's Bible PDFs.
What I liked most about the book is that it helps you seriously evaluate your invention's chance at making money. Some other books I have read assume you are going to do whatever it takes to profit from your invention and then lead you through the steps. The Inventor's Bible helps you evaluate your invention and then shows you what to overcome to make a profit. If going through that process makes some people reconsider whether their good idea just isn't good enough, then they will be wiser and richer for it.
That being said, after reading the book, I feel more confident that my invention will make me money. At the same time, I now know that it's going to take much longer than I expected, so I'm planning accordingly.
Great Resource for Inventors - highly recommend.......2004-03-11
I found this book very helpful. I am an engineer currently working on bringing my alternative energy invention to market. Not only I found a bunch of good advice in this book but this book made me feel that even though marketing my invention will be a lot of work, it can be done. I've read several similar books ("Idiot's guide.." and "Patents to Profit") but I think what set this one apart for me were the case studies. Reading what some of the other inventors went thru, their rises and their falls, makes you feel like you are already part of that group. I highly recommend this book.
