Wonderful Book with lots of eye candy.......2003-09-14
The book contains lots of information on Batiks and many beautiful pictures. I took a class by Laurie Shifrin, we did the "Behind the Shadows" quilt from the book, page 54. Not only is she a great author, but in person is very friendly and always ready to offer encouragement. She will be releasing a new book sometime this winter. I got a sneak preview during a trunk show and believe me the color and fabric combinations are eye-catching. The only complaint I have with the book is that it doesn't contain the block sizes.
Excellent patterns for any fabric.......2003-02-16
In this book, Laurie talks about the history of batiks and about how they are made today. She also talks about how to buy Batiks, and how to tell the real Batiks apart from the look-alikes. I also see instructions on caring and protecting your Batik fabric. However, not as much about this as I expected.
This book also has a lot of basic quiltmaking instructions. If this was the only book I owned, I would be able to finish a quilt right down to the binding. There's not too much on quilting patterns because she feels the batiks speak for themselves so the quilts don't need too much quilting.
I am not a person who likes the Batik fabrics, but I love the patterns in this book just using my fabrics. Most of the patterns are simple rotary cutting quilts using squares, rectangles and triangles. I did see a few quilts that use applique or a template.
The directions are simple to follow and well illustrated. Laurie has also rated each pattern by skill level. I'm a beginner, but with these directions, I feel I could successfully and easily complete every one.

Gorgeous photos of gorgeous batik quilts! Excellent!.......2001-12-03
This book is eye-candy for those who love batik fabrics. The author provides 18 patterns for quilts made with batiks. She also provides in interesting introduction and background info on batik fabric and how it is made. Very readable book, with beautiful quilt patterns. But the best part of this book is in simply ooohing and ahhhing over the photos of batik fabrics. Lovely!!
Great Batik Quilt design source.......2001-11-27
Batik Beauties lives up to its title. The gorgeous array of quilts will entice anyone who has a love of fabrics. Laurie Shifrin shows you in clear, easy steps how to combine luscious batiks to create a prize quilt, which not only does justice to the fabric, but is an eye-catcher either on the wall or the bed. This book can take the frustration out of creating a masterpiece as Ms. Shifrin, who has a special eye for combining color and pattern, categorizes the different batik designs and then guides you to create an effective combination. Her instructions are clearly written and well illustrated and she offers designs which appeal to a variety of tastes.

Product Description
TRENDSETTING - the best word to describe Batik Inspirations. A new style of coffee-table book, Batik Inspirations - featuring top batik designers, differs from the usual fashion magazines or batik books: in fact, the personal style of writing and the chapter headings completely depart from the usual styles of foreward, preface, introduction, etc. The Batik Inspirations book follow the promotions initititated by the late Datin Seri Endon Mahmood - the Prime Minister's late wife of Malaysia. The Batik Inspirations book is timely and in line with the current wave on batik. With the aim of promoting batik in everyday life, Batik Inspirations showcases models wearing batik designs which marry contemporary designs with traditional methods of canting and 'batik chop'. Among the batik designs featured are haute couture, casual-wear, evening-wear, and bridal gowns. These designs are from internationally renowned Malaysian batik designers and award winners. Also featured in the book is the process of batik making using the 'canting' and 'chop' methods - which will help understand the batik making process, and thus further appreciate the designs. Photographer eM.K. aims to make the book appeal to fashion enthusiasts, photographers, and people who love beautiful pictures. The strength of the book lies with dramatic photographs of models and clothing set in unique, distinctive settings using Peranakan, Chinese, Malay and colonial buildings. Just like the new wave of batik inspired designs, this idea starts a new trend of lifestyle photography standards and presentation.

A must have for quilters.......2004-10-18
Jan has taken her passion and love of Batiks and quilting and passed that feeling on to those who open the pages of her book. Focus on Batiks gives the reader an excellent introduction to the unique properties of Batik fabric along with beautiful quilts that have been created with these fabrics. This would be a wonderful addition to any quilter's library.
Focus on Batiks.......2004-07-24
Jan Smiley's book is top notch. She has numerous examples of batiks used well, projects to get the beginner and more experienced quilter going, and a gallery of excellent quilts, both traditional and innovative.
She has even included instructions for making your own batiks. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book, as good as going to a quilt show in your own living room.

Birds of a Feather Read FoxTrot Together.......2007-02-17
I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.
The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.
The Return of the Lone Iguana. Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-20
I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.
Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.
Stick 'Em Up!.......2006-06-24
This is one of the best Foxtrot books I've ever read! Quincy is my favorite character. Anyway this book mainly revolves around Jason and "The Lone Igunana" in the first few pages of the book, but I won't give anyanymore details. Hope you enjoy reading it, I sure did!
"The Lone Iguana says don't touch that dial...".......2003-11-03
Feeling a little down? Having a hard time laughing? Well, FoxTrot will cure you of that in no time! After all of these years, this comic strip is still able to make me laugh, make me smile and make me forget about my problems, even if it's just for a little bit. "The Return of the Lone Iguana" is a hilarious collection of FoxTrot strips that will have you laughing over and over again. With 128 pages filled with FoxTrot hilarity, this is a collection that will not disappoint.
Everything is fair game in the Fox Family. Jason continues to drive his sister insane with his various toy weapons and pet iguana. Peter is still doing essays at the last minute (literally!) and is driving his parents nuts with his loud music. And of course, Andy has to put up with her husband's stupidity and insanity. Yes, it is an ordinary day for the Fox Family.
In addition to the triumphant return (return?) of the Lone Iguana, you'll also get:
*Paige's mall trip with Peter*
*Jason's new internet*
*Peter's sick day from school*
*Jason's "The Far Side II"*
*Halloween with the Fox Family*
*Paige in a play*
*Thanksgiving: the meal of horrors*
and a whole lot more!
"The Return of the Lone Iguana" is a hilarious FoxTrot collection that does not disappoint for a single second. If you're a fan of the comic strip, then I highly recommend checking it out. If you have never read FoxTrot before... the more reason to check it out!
One of the best ever!!.......2003-07-20
This is one of the best foxtrot books ever!! If you only want Foxtrot books that are worth raeding, this is one of them!!

Humor examples.......2006-02-25
This book was a nice overview of creating humor--the varied examples of humor and the ways it could be used were the best.
The book was rather optimistic that we all could "create" good humor after reading this book. Gave some good insights, but hard to write a "how to be funny" book. Still, a worthy try. Did not come close to exploring theories of humor or where it comes from, but the book did not set out to do this.
This is a very funny book!.......2006-01-11
Thank you Professor Willis! How to Be Funny on Purpose is clearly a life-long labor of love by Edgar Willis, a Professsor Emeritus of Communication at the University of Michigan. Professor Willis, thoroughly enjoying his subject, has written a book both consistently funny and deeply thoughtful. He has combined, in counter-point, a great storyteller's skills with a keen analysis of the purposes, causes and structure of humor -- why and what makes us laugh -- and its most ubiquitous form: the joke. This is a fine exploration of one of the most enjoyable (and perhaps mysterious) aspects of life, humor, and the creation of humor (and jokes) out of whole cloth. Every page will make you smile, if not outright guffaw.
I think everyone will enjoy this book!.......2006-01-02
This Book is Everything the Reviewers Say It Is
Here is a book that lives up to all the praise it has received either here or on the jacket cover of the book itself. Whether you read the book for pleasure, instruction, history, analysis, as a reference book, or just for the jokes, this is a complete book on humor. So, read the reviews, trust the comments, and enjoy the book! Whatever your reason for reading the book, you will be completely delighted with your purchase.
How To Be Funny On Purpose.......2006-01-02
The late Dr. Leo Buscaglia, author, educator, and renowened lecturer once said, "People don't laugh very much anymore...things are not funny." Good Lord, maybe we're so busy in our routines that we've forgotten how to laugh. Well, it's time to bring laughter back into our lives...and what better way to do it than to read HOW TO BE FUNNY ON PURPOSE. Authors Willis and Weaver II remind us of the importance of a good belly laugh and give us insight into how to master the art of being funny. An informative and side-tickling read!
Excellent Book.......2005-11-30

Book Description
Would you like to serve on jury and decide whether someone accused of a crime is guilty or not? Who doesn't love a twisty mystery--a locked room, a seemingly impossible crime, a pivotal piece of evidence that seems to make no sense. Here are 15 diabolically clever crimes that made the author smile and say, "You'll never untangle this one"; but you'll want to keep looking till you find the simple twist that lets you sneer and reply, "I fooled you!" These little murders and other crimes hark back to old-fashioned whodunits--you don't need special police knowledge or have to engage in chases and fights. There's not even a complicated logic involved, just good use of your imagination. 96 pages, 12 b/w illus., 5 3/8 x 8 1/4.
Customer Reviews:
Hours of Fun.......2007-03-22
"Whodunit - You Decide!" is a book of twelve mini-mysteries in a court room setting. The book is divided into four sections: An opening statement which explains how the book works; the court cases themselves which are short stories; jury deliberations (arranged alphabetically by story); and the verdicts (again arranged alphabetically by story). At the end of each story is a section called "Trial Witnesses and Evidence" which consists of five different pieces of evidence for each puzzle. Listed at the top of this section is a notation saying how many clues are needed to solve the puzzle. After reading each puzzle, the evidence section, and jury deliberation section readers are to decide whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty.
Although there are only twelve mini-mysteries in "Whodunit - You Decide!" each puzzle is complex and challenging enough to keep you busy for hours. The courtroom setting is a unique idea and a great way of giving readers just enough clues to help solve the mysteries. The puzzles range from easy to difficult and extremely clever. The easiest puzzles are "Our Man in the Field", "The Haunted House Murder", "The Lady in the Dumbwaiter" and "Will-O'-The-Wisp". "Death and the Single Girl" is easy but extremely clever while "Trial of the Black Widow" is a puzzle that has been done in various forms in mini-mysteries which makes it very easy to solve for long-time fans of mini-mysteries. "A Witless Eyewitness" and "No Brake for the Wearys" are tough and very clever puzzles. "The Vanishing Verrocchio" is also very clever with some nicely placed clues. "One Strike You're Out" is also very clever but relies too much on coincidence. Only two of the puzzles didn't work for me: "The Hot Designer" was not very believable and "A Family Feud" was an odd puzzle. I really liked the fact that the jury deliberation and verdict sections are arranged alphabetically by story which makes it impossible to accidentally see the clues or solutions to the puzzles following the one you are working on.
"Whodunit - You Decide!" is an excellent book of mini-mysteries.
Not as good as "almost perfect crimes"..........2003-08-20
The problem with the trial format is that it makes the book predictable plotwise: person A is always innocent, and a person B always has some crazy plan to frame person A. However, the crimes are just as challenging as the last edition. This work is still a far cry from a half-baked whodunit, where a case is "solved" when a suspect blurts out a lie. It's got me hooked and I'm 21, which is quite an achievement.
"The Haunted House murder" is the best case in this book.
Better than watching TV.......2000-06-27
Instead of mindlessly watching TV tonight, why not try a Whodunit mystery? These mysteries are fun and challenging -- think Encyclopedia Brown for an older crowd. Each one has clever twists and it's great fun to exercise your power of deduction.
Each mystery is set up like a court case where the reader puts herself in the shoes of a juror. The general information about the case is given, followed by a set of clues (you don't need all of the clues to figure them out), and the answers are given in the back of the book.
This book would be great on a long road trip, or as an alternative to the mundanity of watching television. I'd recommend it to parents of teenagers, or anyone who wants to sink his teeth into a mystery.
Another great mini-mystery puzzle book by Hy Conrad!.......1996-11-28
This book is a sequel to "Almost Perfect Crimes : Mini-Mysteries for You to Solve".
Once again you'll need to fire up all of your little gray cells
to solve this new set of 12 clever whodunits!
Note that some of the puzzles in this book have also appeared in a
slightly altered form at "The Case" website. Buyer beware!
