Not only are there great traditional techniques but the author visits some of the more modern ideas. Good illustrations in a book that is long out of print from England.

A practical guide for any woman.......2005-11-15
I've read books and magazines that give tips on how to be a strong, successful woman, but this is the first book that really offers advice in a clear, no nonsense format. I read the book initially because I'm a big Betty Boop fan, but even those who aren't enamored of the cartoon cutie should give this book a try. In it there is practical advice on everything from personal appearance and self-confidence to dealing with sticky situations at work or in your family. From love life to nightlife, this book shows how to come out of every situation smelling like a rose. It's a basic blueprint to success and happiness, the Betty Boop way.
If you love Betty, you will love this book!.......2005-10-20
I am a huge Betty Boop fan and have always wanted "it" like Betty This is an entertaining book with lots of great advice. I love the illustrations of Betty throughout the book. Come on, Betty is the ultimate lady! Today there are all these dumb blonde stars acting trashy, slutty, and are in my opinion unsexy, not beautiful and useless. Betty is classy, sexy but innocent, alluring, sweet, and intelligent. She always acts proper but is flirty and inticing. She also shows that brunettes have more fun! The book has an introduction, and then talks about diet, exercise, health, and beauty. I have lost 200 pounds based on the same principles in this book. Then the book goes into being Betty at work, in love, with friends, and at home and with family. I was so happy to find this and read it. It is a small book and can be read very easily and quickly in an afternoon. I think it is one of the best guide's for women. It is not just comical but very practical. What woman doesn't want to be Betty?I definitely would give this more stars if I could!

Another bizarrely humorous book from the delightfully eccentric mind of Burton Silver and company, perhaps best known for their Why Cats Paint series and related books.
The full-color illustrations of splattered bird droppings in this handy glove compartment guide enable the motorist to identify quickly which species created which display on the windshield. The excreta of a wide variety of avian species are fully described with detailed notes on the animal's food, geographic location, and the best methods of starting a collection. An invaluable companion for all those who wish to learn more about birds and what they do. Inhabitants of Europe may wish to search their used bookstores for a copy of
The Comprehensive Field Guide to the Ornithological Dejecta of Great Britain and Europe which is, unfortunately, out of print.
Customer Reviews:
Now let's get down to some serious bird identification!.......2005-10-19
With all the great Field Guides around it is becoming quite simple to identify a new bird. You are out birding and see a bird sitting atop a tree. You line it up in your bins, take note of the field marks, check your trusty guide, and Presto! You have just found a Painted Bunting. Now,let's crank it up a notch. You're driving along a back road, and SPLAT!!What was that? Now you're in the big league of bird identification. Here's where this book comes to the rescue.Yep! now you can stop the car and check out the characteristics of the splat and determine what bird paid you a visit. This book describes what matches your splat."Small, sometimes only the size of a grain of rice. The coiled, rather gaudy and squishy nucleus is delightfully encapsulated in a semi-opaque,frothy envelope."What you got here,my friend, is also a Painted Bunting;but indentified in a whole new way! However if this is what you got,"Messy and generous, with a definite tendency to splood. The thick, creamy envelope sometimes contains solids of bilious yellow (partly digested gristle and fat) that add a sprightly dash of color to the splay."Check the book, what you got this time is our old friend, the Turkey Vulture.
So,if you want to improve your image with your birding friends get hold of this book and amaze them at the next SPLAT.
Oh yeah;another thing, just in case that splat was with the compliments of a bat instead of a bird;this book will also help you make the differentiation.
A great gift for you or your birdwatching friend.
one-trick pony, but a very amusing trick.......2002-11-23
This is a short guidebook to birds with its smart tongue planted deep in its cheek. It's copiously illustrated with photographs of bird droppings (splays) on car windshields and instructions on how to tell what
species of bird they came from. As the authors say: "A knowledge of each splay is essential to fully describe and understand the variations in ornithological dejecta." It's largely by taking the subject exactly
that faux seriously, but then subverting it with the choice of topic and some very funny invented vocabulary, that they elicit laughs. Here, for instance, is one of their terms of art and its definition:
audibon: Soft sound made by avian dejecta as it strikes a windshield and forms a splay. Audi (l) sound, bon (fr) good, literally, good sound.
The book's kind of a one-trick pony, but a very amusing trick.
GRADE: B+
VERY FUNNY - TERRIFIC GIFT BOOK.......2001-07-30
I'd never heard of this book (1991) til 2001. It's incredibly funny. Written in a pseudo-audobon style, each page has a perky 1x1" picture of the species of interest, and a sharp, color 4x4" photo of its supposed bird splat. (whether globby, loose, white, gray, yellow, small, large, starburst-like, etc). Very very funny.
Great book.......1997-03-23
This is a great book and has a great web site too, at, http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk./~design.machine-tanya/
Good book! Great site!

Customer Reviews:
The Best Book to Improve Your Bridge.......2007-06-07
I found this to be the best book to improve bridge for an intermediate player. I've read it four times and learned from each chapter each time. Since one plays defense on half the hands, it provides the best time investment to improve one's bridge play. It is also an entertianing read. I have recommended it to the bridge players I mentor.
How to signal, how to card correctly.......2006-03-01
The book focuses on leads, signals (Attitude, Count, Suit Preference), and how to card (what card to play in 2nd or 3rd spot), rather than general defensive principles.
The content is excellent, well presented (humorous!!), and best of all, has lots of quizzes. None of this skimming a section and figuring you know it, the quiz will let you find out for certain.
2 warnings:
1) make sure your partner is using the same techniques, otherwise you may get worse results. Its not that the ideas in the book are radical, they are mainstream. But if pard doesn't understand your signal, they may do something weird and you will be worse off.
2) The book is a bit technical (5 situations where this is a suit preference signal. If Dummy wins with a Q then signal count, otherwise ... If you can see the X in dummy then pard will know to do this, else that, etc.
You will need to reread it several times, and probably make notes.
VALUABLE STUFF, but ONLY as part of a partnership that understands each other.
Learning bridge defense.......2005-09-11
Kantar is exceptionally readable, with a sense of humor which makes a difficult subject enjoyable. He goes through much material, but quite thoroughly and clearly. It's a book that needs to be studied - not merely read - but a good student will gain enormously from Kantar's work.
Read it at least 5 times, it's worth it.......2004-11-21
This is a great book on defense, because Kantar covers almost every intermediate situation comprehensively and give you black and white rules for every situation. He doesn't in this book consider varied leading/signalling conventions but just gives one way to play, but that's fine as he explains his method clearly and shows why he recommends everything he does. I'd recommend it to every player.
Great Teacher.......2004-10-17
Kantar today is more noted as a bridge instructor than a bridge player. But one must remember that he is both and his latest book demonstrated both the instructional and practical sides. It is (as usual) clear, concise and ro the point. I like Kantar's prose, his ease of explanation and the way he sets just the right tone. Of course, he discusses the bid, the opponent and, most important, keeping track of the play while counting the cards (the one thing that separates the professional from the amateur). Good book with tons of examples.
Customer Reviews:
Great all around coverage of Defensive Bridge Play.......2006-03-22
The emphasis on this book is on how to think when on defense. How to think about:
- Clues from the bidding - shape and distribution of the two unseen hands.
-Clues from the opening lead - why did pard lead a suit and not another. Ex. Pard bid Spades and you supported, but he lead Diamonds. Maybe he has the unsupported Ace.
- Counting HCP
- Counting Declarers tricks - if you can see that his finesses will win you may have to take a risky action, like leading K from Kx, its your only chance. (This wouldn't work well at MPs)
Basics are covered such as:
- How to choose an opening lead , especially when to lead trump
- How declarer plans on making his contract i.e. how dummy will be used. For ruffs, for long suit establishment, etc.
- When to defend actively vs. Passively
Lets say Dummy has A Q 10 8 7 in a side suit and you lead another suit and pard wins and returns a trump. Why did he do that? Throwing away the tempo!!! Its probably becaus he has K J 9 x behind Dummy and knows declarer isn't making much in that suit and will need another source of tricks.
- How to thwart declarers plan - eliminate entries to dummy, lead trumps to cut down on ruffs, etc.
An all around great book, material clearly explained, with good examples and quizzes.
Note: Carding concentions are presented IN DEPTH in the authors other book "Modern Bridge defense".
Offensive guide to Bridge Defence.......2001-04-10
It is a complete book on the subject. Chapters are well organised and basic principles are so licidly explained that any astute reader will be immense beneficial out of this book. The examples choosen are not only cute in a sense of its presentation but also make a most difficult thing understable so easily. It is not a book of the Intermediates rather experts could also refresh their knowledge before Championship. Quizes not only explain one particular point but also brought to the surface many other co-related issues. It is a must in every bridge players desk.
Customer Reviews:
Solid Intermediate level book.......2007-03-24
While the problems are not especially difficult I did get some wrong.
Most bridge books present the hands and several tricks and then ask you to make a play at the critical point. This tends to give away teh show.
Instead the author asks you what pards card means, what the layout of the suit is, and other question. He will ask you how you will play and if you take the trick, what you will return.
Rather than listing a set of rules, the author will explain which set of rules apply to that hand (in the solution on the back)
- The book will test you on your signaling and reading of partners signals.
- It will help you get in the habit of counting (HCP, tricks, distribution)
- It will make you aware of correct carding (top of a sequence)
- It will make you aware of common situations where you need to do something counter intuitive
I very much enjoyed the book. If you ahve been playing for a couple of years, and have read some other books on Defense, such as Bill Roots "How to Defend a Bridge Hand" or Mike Lawrences "Dynamic Defense" (or his software) or Kantars other books "Modern Bridge Defense"
" and "Advanced Bridge Defense" then this is teh [perfect book to test your knowledge and reveal your misunderstandings.
*Advanced players will probably find the book rather easy.
* = What makes a player Advanced? Counting everything is natural, easy and routine. You know the basics of your bidding system. You are a competent declarer familiar with all aspects of card play technique.

Tough and good.......2007-05-15
Harder than most of his other books on play. The emphasis is on counting and visualization, not some exotic squeeze.
There are 100 hands, 50 declarer and 50 defense. The problems are paired in the sense that each "theme" is presented once as a declarer play problem and then later as a defense hand, with teh hands slightly changed.
Emphasis on counting, reading signals, visualization, and thinking about how the play will unfold. Will pard be endplayed? Is forcing declarer a good idea (maybe he's trying a trump coup).
Excellent book for avnaved players or ambitious Intermedaites
Good collection of problems.......2007-02-15
These problems involve thinking about pitfalls and the bidding, rather than using rare squeezes.

Business Imperative/Business Critical.......2007-07-12
If you are interested in the critical issues facing Human Resources today and business leadership in general, this text is a must. This book is for the HR practitioner and corporate leaders. The strategic business partner role is the future of Human Resources as the tactical and transactional basics of HR are either being exported outside of HR departments or outsourced. The HR role today is business focused, business critical and business imperative. All the critical isses facing HR are discussed in this anthology - from the strategic national issues, regional issues and globalization. I highly recommend. I also recommend the first addition of this series "Tomorrow's HR Management: 48 Thought Leaders Call For Change." Thanks Amazon for bringing both books to my attention.

Practice lags behind theory as usual.......2007-06-01
The first section of this book was interesting, but it was not an example of what was to come. Many of the practitioner/authors made it clear that actual practice lags behind the available body of knowledge. The usual development of jargon, charts and soft salable materials seem to still dominate actual practice. Many less than expert consultants want to make money and the HR practitioners want to bring in consultants that will make them look good. No wonder the title "consultant" has such a poor connotation Not much has changed in the past 30 years.
Many of the personnnel practices including recruiting, selection, retention, etc. have been written about for years and little is added here. Employee assessment was briefly mentioned, but the development of assessment centers that would measure results was not discussed at any length. Human Resource Accounting by Likert should have had much more explanation. The discussion of Power without differentiating power from authority was pretty weak.
People thinking about this book might ought to first read works by Rensis Likert, K. Lewin, Maslow and other leaders in Organizational Behavior. Experts in this field should be real experts and not just feel good marketers.
The Future of Human Resource Management by Ulrich et al........2006-07-10
The authors describe human resource management as both an art and
a science. It is an art because we are required to motivate,
build alliances, assume new roles, adopt to the corporate culture
and collaborate on mutually beneficial ventures.
Human Resource management issues range from functional experience
to talent management in an organization. An HR advisor is
knowledgable on core competencies . Generally, such a team member
is trusted by superiors to provide the talent necessary to
accomplish corporate goals. Often, it is necessary to adapt the
corporate culture to take full advantage of business conditions.
Employees must focus on building markets of customers locally
and globally. This task requires both new skills and a considerable technical analysis. The HR management process
is a science in that there are reams of statistical data to
sort and interpret for senior management, customers and governmental units at every level.
This work is a good primer for the Human Resource function in
an organization both large and small.
The Future Role of HR Function.......2006-03-15
While HR literature is replete with threats of redundancy for HR department due to variegated reasons, the book is optimistic that HR will continue to grow and play a critical role as a strategic business partner and leader in attracting and retaining talent. It has examined the trends and challenges that will define the future of HR. One of the biggest strengths of this book is its unity in diversity i.e. despite some 45 chapters expressing different perspectives, it goes remarkably well as a coherent whole. That reflects very astute editing. The book succeeds well in identifying the strategic HR themes for the morrow that HR professionals would have to master and nurture in order to deliver value in the present turbulent times. No doubt, the book will prove to be of immense use in expounding an articulate understanding of the dimensions in which the HR interventions are heading.
The book is a fine addition to readings meant for management professionals and CEOs. The publication of such books has been labeled as the emergence of an era of "Heathrow Management Theory." It contains discussion on some of the most-talked-about themes in people management in which some of the best possible names in the HR profession have participated. It will be particularly appreciated by the busy practitioner and the graduate HR students who are tired of reading hard core researches while searching simple answers to some of the most intriguing HR questions. I must however add that since the book has considered the importance of India and China as markets for western goods and technology as also the emerging economies, a chapter each on the state of HR in these economies would have added tremendous value from the reader's point of view. That would have met the needs of a large number of big companies who are looking for operations in these countries. It is to be admitted that the realities of these economies are indeed not the same as those of the industrially-advanced world, and the new global manager would like to acquaint herself with the nuances of the prevailing practices in these new locales of entrepreneurial focus.

VALUABLE, VALID AND VIVID SNAPSHOT OF THE HR PROFESSION!.......2005-04-27
To create this collection the editors contacted thought leaders and asked them "What is the future of HR?" They responded with the essays that make up this work. Its 45 brief chapters, contributed by 64 HR gurus, cover a broad spectrum of issues confronting the field. The chapters were clustered into nine parts, with the springboard clause of "In the future, an effective HR professional must..." These nine parts focus on outcomes and results-not actions or activities. This non-tradition (i.e., not based on specialized functions) organization of the book's content captures a dynamic, value-generating spirit. The authors hope they have provided a "road map for the profession," spotlighting how HR practitioners can constantly reinvent themselves to continue being of value people, organizations, and societies.
The books' core value is that it encompasses so many key and leading-edge topics written by so many people who are at the forefront of forging the field's future. But each chapter has its own stand alone merit; quite a few have considerable originality and 'push the envelop.' For example, in Chapter 14, "Changing Mental Models: HR's Most Important Task," Jeffrey Pfeffer argues that aside from being keepers and analysts of organization culture, HR needs to be concerned with the mental models and mindsets of the people of the company, particularly its leaders. Page-forward to chapter 30; there, Jac Fitz-Enz has a slightly different take; he concludes that to be a strategic business partner, HR leaders must become more culture managers than anything else-"there is no better place to start than with the organization's culture." Such thought-provoking views are typical of this book and distinguish it as lively, varied and ambitious collection of substantive thinking. Clearly, this is not a fast-read; given its agenda and scope-that's a virtue.
As an HR consultant and practitioner (HRconsultant.com, Partner, Stern & Associates), as well as a reviewer, I find this book to be a valuable, valid, and vivid snapshot of where the HR field is, where it's likely to be heading, and the many challenges it's confronting. No question about it, there's a lot of rewarding reading in this book.
