    Book Description

This broad-reaching collection of essays constitutes a thorough introduction to the fields and methodologies concerned with studies of textiles and dress of the Middle Ages. New themes and critical viewpoints from many disciplines are brought to bear on the medieval material in the areas of archaeology, art and architecture, economics, law, history, literature, religion, and textile technology. The contributors address surviving objects and artifacts and interpret representations in texts and images. The articles extend in time from the fifth to the sixteenth centuries, and cover Europe from Scandinavia, England, and Ireland in the north, to Italy and the Mediterranean basin in the south. Emphasis is placed on the significant role of trade and cultural exchanges as they impact appearance and its constituent materials.

5 out of 5 stars cohesive & encompassing view of medieval textiles.......2003-07-22

As is the case with many books compiled from excellent work created by diverse authors, this book could warrant a review of each chapter. The book covers the fifth through the sixteenth centuries, from Ireland to Italy and the Mediterranean, and is compiled into three sections based on date(s) covered by the articles.

This tome discusses the distinctions of levels of society as delineated by clothing, the development of the textile industry, and the use of textile analogies in period literature. It examines textile depictions found on monuments, in sculpture, in paintings, and on manuscripts. But in its fourteen chapters this volume manages to convey a cohesive and encompassing view of textiles in the medieval period. It offers the reader not only interesting facts, but the authors' excellent work convincingly connects the dots so as to give clothing a life of its own in the context of the times.

Chapters such as Dressing the Part, From Content to Form and Marie de France's Bisclavret deliver both sides of the coin: we are what we wear as well as wearing what we are entitled due to class structure. Without clothes, Bisclaveret is a wolf, un-recognizable; with clothes he is a nobleman, although Gloria Thomas Gilmore discusses the balance of both sides of the coin. Does form follow function, or is function a result of the form?

In Christ as a Windblown Sleeve, Margarita Yanson explores the changing costumes within Gottried von Strassburg's Tristan where changes in clothing mark the complexity of the main character, Tristan. Simularly, in As Proud as a Dog in a Doublet, Linda Anderson sees costume as an integral part of the play. On the other hand, The Margaret Fitzgerald Tomb Effegy comments on the strong nationalism in the dress of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, when adherance to national norms was seen as akin to patriotic act, and changing one's dress could be seen as treason and situates the effegy within the context of the time.

The chapters written by the editors are pivotal and act to anchor the rest of the book. Snyder's work discusses not only the sculpural forms in the column-figures and document seals in great detail, but in discussing the dress pictured from England to Germany it provides both an overview and excellent detail. Inserted between two chapters that draw from literary sources, the sharp images of the columns offer the mind a break as the detail is made visible to the eye as well as to the mind. Désirée Koslin's chapter touches on materials, dyes, weaving, finishing and meaning of cloth and clothing. Even through its title the final chapter is an overview and a case study. In many ways, it rounds out and sums up the book in a very satisfactory manner.

From art and legal manuscripts to archeological evidence and period documents the authors describe dress and its importance in great detail. The rich description plus the illustrations paint a lucid image of the clothing of the time in detail suitable for recreating the costumes discussed, while the discussion of the meaning of such explores timeless issues regarding the role of clothing and cloth in society and the lives of individuals. Black and white images throughout illustrate the chapters, and a seven page glossary makes terms that may be unfamiliar to some understandable without reaching for the dictionary, and a comprehensive index makes revisiting bits of information a breeze. Although this book is aimed at the student of the medieval period, and specifically at someone interested in the dress of the period, those interested in philosophy and dress in general can see parallels throughout the ages making this a book of value. Reading this book has made me think about dress more closely, not only in a historical context, but also while people-watching, and in movies such as the Matrix trilogy where dress has layers of meaning.

3 out of 5 stars Ok collection of artwork (3 and 1/2 stars).......2005-04-13

Adult full-color pin-up book (collection of pictures).

There are around 32 women in the book. One picture is on a giant page folded into the book. The artwork is quite good; some are sketchy and are very detailed. The woman are in various stages of undress, with some clothed but in transparent or wet garments. A nice collection, though a little to "just there" not doing anything.

Even though Irvin Bomb's book (Art of Irvin Bomb) is quite similar, there is just something about Bomb's artwork that raises it to the above 4 star level while Mobius' work, while good, falls below that rating. Mobius' artwork just doesn't "click."

I discovered this book in my parents' library when I was in elementary school. After using a few choice examples in school, I was sent to the principal's office. Although she kept a straight face while reprimanding me, she never did return the book. Hopefully it made the schoolboard meetings a little more interesting.
I just bought it for the second time.

1 out of 5 stars What Stewart said.......2005-03-21

Stewart (below) had already written my review for me before I logged in to do it...he's right on the money. I'm not new to web development or Cold Fusion and am so fascinated by Dreamweaver MX 2004 (absolutely buy the beyond excellent "Missing Manual" book for it, BTW) that I bought Studio MX 2004 and I hoped this book would get me up and running. After 115 pages of cryptic how-to's that assume you already know how-to, and a lot of discussion about how to deal with your client and draw a flowchart (the diamond shape is a decision box, it sez here...really!), I threw up my hands and realized I had made a bad buy. If you already know the individual products in Studio well, this may be of great help to you. If you're coming from Cold Fusion Studio and have limited exposure to graphic design, run far, far away from this one.

1 out of 5 stars Too much saying we're great, too little technique!.......2005-03-18

We purchased this book hoping (from the great reviews it got in Amazon) it would be the missing link to learning the techniques advertised, however the book does a fairly poor job of presenting the advertised techniques and makes quite a few mistakes. After using the excellent "Training from the source" books published by Macromedia, this book is a real let down. The book seems more like a pat on the backs for corporate style departmentalized development than it does a training manual. The authors start off wasting several chapters telling you that you can't develop competent websites by yourself as an individual web developer anymore then waste more space convincing themselves that wasted space was valuable. They do eventually get to some technique development but when they do they don't make their presentation in a straight forward fashion. If we were not already developers used to Macromedia Studio MX 2004 tools and capabilities this book would have been impossible to benefit from. Having such knowledge, this book is of little help. We would have given the book a two star rating except for the fact that we bought it because of the five star ratings we saw on Amazon (that's all it had then), and we cannot understand how it could ever get more than three. If we would have had any idea how little help this book would be we would not have bought it. If these authors would have stuck to presenting the techniques advertised in a step-by-step progression, editorially reviewed their work for accuracy and eliminated all of the fluff regarding departmentalization for development, they might have created a valuable product. As it is, it's not worth recommending. Macromedia's Training from the Source books like:

3 out of 5 stars Who proofread this?.......2004-04-23

Although I am learning a lot from this book, it is a struggle. The step by step instructions are not always clear and sometimes omit important information. Other times the text is just sloppy. For instance, the authors say to name a file, say, file1. Through the rest of the example they refer to the file as file_1. Saying a button is the second from the right on a vertical toolbar is another. It's a good thing you can download the project files from the publisher's website to see what they really are talking about. If I didn't already have experience with Dreamweaver 4 and Fireworks 4, I'd probably be really lost.

5 out of 5 stars This book is set to become a classic........2004-02-18

Hands up those of you who have been to one those free Macromedia seminars where a team of speakers attempt to present all the wonders of Studio MX 2004 over a period of a few hours? Absolutely riveting stuff. Database driven Flash, Cold Fusion interaction, calendars and booking systems, streaming media, fantastic looking demo sites, css tricks, templates, Flash chat rooms. Now hands up those of you who could remember how to do any of it 10 minutes after leaving the conference centre. Frustrating isn't it?

Enter "Building Dynamic Web Sites with Macromedia Studio MX 2004". This book is set to become a classic. It will change the way you work with "Studio MX 2004" forever. For a start you will find yourself using the entire package to it's full potential as opposed to just tinkering around the edges.

The book revolves around the building of a Web Site for the "Oakbridge Recreation Center". Excited yet? Stick around. This is not just any old Web Site. This is state of the art Cold Fusion / Flash / DMX / MySql masterpiece complete with a Virtual Tour of the facilities based on the visitors interests, an online booking facility and the piece de resistance .... an online meeting facility flexible enough to offer services ranging from a text input chat facility to streaming video and audio.

Scared yet? Don't be. The authors go out of their way to guide you step by step through the process using ample diagrams and screen grabs. Their writing style is up close and personal, almost as if they were sitting next to you having a chat. Their approach throughout is to let the software do all the hard work.

This book is a trip of discovery and along the way you will encounter Flash Remoting, The Flash Communication Server and the use of Flash MX 2004 components, dynamic templates, Dreamweaver's new CSS capabilities, the advantages of using Fireworks as your primary graphics tool and much much more. Just take a look through the Table Of Contents to get a feel for the scope of the book.

This book is aimed at the intermediate user. The guy who has used Dreamweaver and messed with a bit of Flash and is now ready for greater things. If you own Studio MX 2004 you NEED this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Solid Reference for Web Production.......2003-12-20

Once again, this writng team has pulled off an excellent book! This book is an excellent referecne for anyone in the web production industry, from project managers, to programmers to designers. It gives an excellent overview of the entitre production process, with actual task-based projects.

While this book will not make you an MX 2004 expert, it will do a wonderful job of showing you how all the pieces of the MX 2004 suite work together, and how this software package can save you time.

I was very impressed with the way the book is broken out into production phases - from the minute the phone rings with a new client asking questions - to the finished project.

This book is not jsut a reference, but a production tool in itself. I know I will make use of many examples during my own web design courses.

1 out of 5 stars Neither here nor there, and no bang for your bucks.......2003-05-13

I agree with the recommendations of some of the previous reviewers to consider Amazon reader recommendations carefully before you purchase this book.

If you are expecting a practical "how to" guide that will get you up and running with the MX Studio applications, a handy reference that will live along side your computer that's full of carefully detailed explanations, or a guide to efficient workflow by sharing tasks among the applications, then either "The Macromedia Studio MX Bible" or "Dummies" guide will give you so much more in terms of information and advice.

The focus of this book is more about working with a team of developers, each of which talks specifically about an application or two, rather than the nitty gritty of how to get a lot of tasks accomplished yourself. But when it comes to process analysis and integrating motion and static web design with database and content management, Hillman Curtis' "MTIV: Process, Inspiration and Practice for the New Media Designer " is a much more thorough and in depth analysis of both the creative, development, problem solving aspects of interaction design.

For the same price or for less money, any of books I mentioned above will give you much more information in a more logical and practical format, than this book.

2 out of 5 stars This book broke my heart.......2003-02-23

What is more exciting than learning how to build killer websites and impress your friends and family?
(nothing - that's why I bought this book)
In short I strongly agree with my friend mxreader from Queensland. This book is for those who want to integrate their workflow in a corporate level webhouse. If you pick up this book knowing next to nothing about Dreamweaver, Fireworks or Flash as I did, spend too many hours reading and then skimming through hundreds of pages, you'll put it down, if you're lucky, knowing one new thing about each program.
Is this an acceptable return on investment?
Is this the way to learn these programs and put a website up from scratch?
Is this the way to impress the three f's (friends, family and fiance)?
        No. No. and No.
I am returning it. Thank goodness for amazon. They deserve their reputation for the best service company in existence.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than I expected........2003-02-12

Every author will tell us his or her book is excellent for both beginner and expert alike. They'll say this, and they truly believe it, but have you ever actually bought a book and found such a claim to be true? I usually find myself either tediously pondering through page after page - screen shot after screen shot - or wildly flipping pages looking for something I know should be there but, it's just not where I'm looking. Well, Green, Chilcott, and Flick have actually done it. This volume (massive as it is at over 750 pages) is EQUALLY USEFUL AS A QUICK REFERENCE AND AS A TUTORIAL, moreover they've added/inserted the connecting material that makes it easy to track their SUCCESSFUL approach to the DESIGN process itself. --VERY USEFUL-

As the managing site designer for HPMA, I'm not bad with Dreamweaver but I'm a "newbe" when I try to use it seamlessly with the rest of the studio. This book is exactly what I needed. I can wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, regardless of background or skill level. - A REAL FIND --

2 out of 5 stars Should have read the reviews more carefully.......2003-01-31

I was expecting to learn more than just about how a group of web designers build websites with StudioMX. This book got high marks from the other reviewers, but in my opinion the marks were for what it teaches about "work flow" and team work. If thats what you are looking for then great. I ranked this book based on its worth for teaching about the software.

Overall it is verbose, wasted much valuable time and not a good teaching book (not to mention typhos). If you are looking to learn more about Dreamweaver or Fireworks or Flash or Freehand, this book is not for you. Better to spend the cash on dedicated books even though you may spend more in the end (but you will likely learn more thoroughly too). For me this book has not been a good investment of time and money.

This book is probably better suited for those that are working as a team with the different skill sets and interested in figuring out how Studio MX can fit in as a tool.

          4 out of 5 stars Smileage.......2000-06-14

I really enjoyed reading this book on travel games and activities. I wish my parents had this book when I was a child and often grew bored stiff on long car trips from Connecticut to Florida.

Smileage contains great conversation starters, games, quizzes and ponderings for the prisoners of a car or other mode of transportation. I found the quality of these suggestions to be very good. Though the book touts itself as being "for all ages," some of the activities are rather complex and certainly would not lend themselves to toddlers for example. I think that that majority of the activities would be most appropriate for school-age children and older.

I give Smileage four stars for originality, creativity, and overall travel fun! In fact, some of the conversation starters could be good in general to increase communication, closeness and interaction with your kids.

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Coverage.......2007-08-13

Takes the individual investor through the gambit on index funds, with solid information that is genuinely useful, whether you're investing in an IRA or a cash account. Will also help you in selecting the appropriate investments for your 401K. As with all minimally speculative investing, returns grow over time. If you're interested in high return, overnight strategies, this is not for you. Conversely, if you wish to follow Warren Buffet's advice (he strongly feels index funds are an ideal investment - especially for the individual), you should read this. I strongly recommend this to anyone who has 10+ years of investing - whether in a retirement plan or a taxable plan.

5 out of 5 stars The best book yet on index funds.......2007-03-21

After reading most of the available books on index funds, and many of them give both the reasoning for, and the advantages of, investing in such funds, I believe this latest one is the best of the bunch. It provides not only the various powerful arguments for such investing, but also suggests specific portfolios of index funds for different classes of investors.

Although each investor has his or her own individual situation, which must be carefully analyzed before any investment plan is generated or changed, Ferri's book is a good guide toward making the best choices.

After studying the various investment choices available to the individual investor, I have concluded that unless the investor has some really specific and unique knowledge of any particular company, or possiby industry, investing in individual stocks or bonds can be highly speculative. Investing in mutual funds provides some degree of diversification, but most managed (not index) funds show a long term return which is significantly less than that of index funds, and those few managed funds that have "beaten the average" in the past, generally do not continue to do so. Moreover, the 1% or more of expense ratio of managed funds takes a really big bite over time when the compounding interest effect is taken into account.

          4 out of 5 stars Good information........2007-03-09

Could use some editing, for example, the front cover talks about EFTs when obviously they mean ETFs.

The information contained inside is solid though.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Index Funds .......2006-01-03

Although I have been investing in and studying index mutual funds since 1990, I still learned a few things in this book.

I enjoyed Ferri's method of determining his client's risk tolerance. He puts his clients through one of our most recent Bear Markets, 1973-1974, and sees if they can stand the losses to their portfolio with a starting asset allocation. If they can't stand the losses, he adjusts the asset allocation to a lower risk allocation until they can stomach the losses.

I also enjoyed his explanation of Modern Portfolio Theory. His hypothetical example shows that a portfolio made up of stocks and bonds actually has a slightly higher return and slightly lower risk than you would expect using simple math.

Ferris is also willing to go out on a limb and predict returns for various asset classes and inflation for the next 30 years. He seems to agree with Buffett that stocks will deliver a nominal return of 8% versus the 70 year average of 11%. Of course Buffett predicted stock returns in the 1980's would be in single digits and the S&P returned a compounded nominal of 18%.

Ferri does a great job of explaining why index funds outperform actively managed funds over long periods of time.

All in all, it is a very informative book.

I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Wealth of Experience: Real Investors on what Works and What Doesn't, Index Mutual Funds: How to Simplify Your Life and Beat the Pros, The Coffeehouse Investor, and the Armchair Millionaire.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book by a investing expert.......2005-11-20

Richard Ferri writes a great book on the use of index mutual funds. His advice for the investor is clear and concise. In the book he covers all of the important points that one needs to learn about building a portfolio of index mutual funds. You cannot go wrong following his advice.
