Book Description
New York's Lower East Side has been a fountain of creativity and art since the early 1950s, a free-wheeling bazaar of ideas and artists that has challenged and shaped mainstream culture. Captured tells the story of film and video in the Lower East Side and the East Village in the artists' own words. Over 100 contributors discuss the early years with Allen Ginsburg, Andy Warhol, Jack Smith, Taylor Mead and Jonas Mekas, as well as the wild 1970s and 1980s with Jim Jarmusch, Steve Buscemi, Luis Guzman, Nick Zedd and many others. Movements such as No Wave and the Cinema of Transgression are covered, as is the story of Pull My Daisy, considered among the true progenitors of "indie film."
Captured is part formal history and part inspirational text, reminding people on the outside looking in how often their contributions form the invisible pillars of American art and popular life long after they themselves are forgotten. To quote the great pop art filmmaker Jack Smith, "Art school? Art school? I didn't have the luxury of going to art school. I had to come to New York and go straight to work making art."
This book is a must-have for fans of independent film and students of cinema everywhere.

Magnifico.......2001-12-19
One of the most beautiful books I have ever seen on this passionate and dramatic ballet sans blood and bulls. Rich, gorgeous photos show the intricacies and details of the costumes and provide a view most people are unaware of. Highly recommended. Stunning!
You've gotta get this!!!.......2001-05-21
This book is breathtakingly beautiful. It is exceedingly difficult to find any information on the bullfighter's costume. This book doesn't just tell about the work that goes into the design and construction like most other references on the shelf. The photos are so rich in detail and color that just to study one picture leaves one as satisfied as if having read an entire novel on the art. I have spent countless hours just gaping in awe at the remarkable craftsmanship of these objets d'arte. For anyone who has the least bit of appreciation for the clothes we create and the traditions we honor I promise, this book will not only inspire but impassion. As a student of couture, I'd have to say it's one of the best books you'll ever find. Totally worth the price!!!

But one man, Kenneth Irons, will do whatever it takes to control the one who possesses the Witchblade.
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The Witchblade is a powerful mystical artifact, and it can only be used by women. It also seems to have some sort of mind of its own, and its own ulterior motives, seeking out those whom it wants to be wielded by.
Sara Pezzini is a New York detective. In dealing with her job she has to face the problems that come with being a woman, drop-dead gorgeous, and now stumbling across the Witchblade itself.
One of My Favorite Comic Stories........2006-08-08
I first bought into the Witchblade hype in 1996 when Wizard Magazine first did a spread about this comic book. I started collecting the series around issue #11 and by that time the back issues were just way to expensive for a high school freshman. I bought followed the book and kept up with it because of Michael Turner's art and because of Tora No Shi (A character within the story). Eventually I dropped Witchblade around issue 30 because my interest in comics had died down, Tora No Shi had died, and Michael Turner had left.
Fast forward eight years. I walk into my local comic book shop and saw this trade on the shelf. I had always wanted to read the first eight issues to see what the hype was about. This trade is one of the best stories that I have ever read. I do agree with one of the previous reviews saying that Sara had become a whiny girl after being a tough cop in the beginning. But that struggle within Sara was the best part of the story. Michael Turner is top notch. His characters look beautiful, the landscape is amazing, and most importantly the story-telling ability in his art is what carried this book.
I highly recommend this trade paperback for anyone who wants to get started reading the Witchblade. This story is what defined the book, and this was during the golden day of the comic because it brought together the characters and the Witchblade together. In later issues the story would turn into a detective drama and less about the artifact which did not do as well.
In order for the Witchblade to survive as a series, there needs to be a combination between the Witchblade and the characters.
If I were you I'd just stick with the television series.......2006-06-21
I honestly have a very hard time understanding why Witchblade has become such a huge fan favorite after reading this collection of the first eight issues. I realize that this is just the start of the series but it is a very rough start in my opinion. After Watching the Witchblade television series I expected a Sara Pezzini who was a much more mature character but that wasn't to be the case. She goes from being a tough New York cop to being all girly and helpless so often that she comes across as rather unstable. I realize that this is supposed to be because of all she has gone through after being chosen by the Witchblade but we never get a sense of exactly HOW it has turned her life so upside-down. It's all well and good to want to draw out the mystery of the Witchblade but give us something to go on please. Give us some idea of what the Witchblade is and why it chose Sara. Show us just how much the two of them are merging on more than just an outward level. The characters are not developed enough to make me care about any of them. This book is spilling over with Michael Turner's usual doe-eyed, top-heavy super skinny bad girl art, which I can't stand. I felt Turner's art made the women come across as all sex and no substance, while the men all seem to be harsh faced and superior. All his characters tend to look the same to me and convey very little, if any real emotion. The stories are rough and poorly constructed with way too much dialogue and narration cluttering up the page. There is a part where Sara is talking with one of the characters that for me sums up how I felt about this trade. She describes him as being full of frustrating vagaries that just threw things out there without pause. I think I know what she meant. I felt the same way about the writers of this book. Maybe the series settled down as it went along into something that was more bearable, but if this were as far as the series had progressed after eight issues I wouldn't have stuck with it any further. Actually to be honest I wouldn't have stuck with this beyond the fourth issue. If a book can't draw me in by then it's not worth a further investment of my time or money. My suggestion to you is to not waste either on this trade.
Good Stuff!.......2005-12-31
The book I received actually has Michael Turner's picture of Sara Pezzini on the cover (like the Witchblade Deluxe Collected Edition cover. Except, mine has a blue color mix and says, "Witchblade Origins".), not the picture of actress Yancy Butler.
Witchblade: Origins, collects Witchblade issues #1-8, plus covers. And includes the hard to find Wizard Ace Edition cover, and a couple of pinup pictures.
This is a great find for anyone that has joined the club a little later in the story, and doesn't want to pay twice as much for these hard to find issues. Also great for those that just want to read the story without breaking out their Mint Condition issues.
The artwork is done by Mega-artist Michael Turner in his earlier days of comic book work.
One of the greatest comics I've ever read..........2004-06-29
This is seriously one of THE absolute best comics to come out in the last ten years. I'd grown seriously tired of the cliches and stupidity of comics in the early to mid-nineties. They were becoming stale with all the same design styles and just nonsensical storylines. There were a few exceptions at the time, X-Men being foremost among them but, to get back on the subject- things weren't going well for the comics industry at the time. Along comes Image comics (some of the guys who created some of the problems the comics industry had back then to begin with) and they begin creating a slew of other stories that pretty much have almost nothing to do with super heroes. Witchblade was one of the top-tier titles among this new string of incredible comics. Top Cow Productions has created essentially a crime drama/cop show with some of the super hero trappings. The main character, Sara Pezzini, is a heroine that many people can relate to fairly well. She's got a strong sense of right and wrong but isn't afraid to step over the line if she needs to. She's a very independent and very strong female lead. Not something you see every day in the world of comics. The artwork is incredible, the storyline just as incredible as the artwork and the characters believable. What more could you ask for in a comic? Not much, if you ask me. My reccomendation is to pick up this book and check it out. Unless you're really hard-nosed and stubborn about things, this should be an obvious choice.

niceeee.......2001-07-10
This book is a great addition to anyones graphic novel collection. It contains issues 8 to 16 from the popular witchblade comic book series (top cow). The artwork looks great. The writing is good. The story picks up after Sarahs first major battle with keneth irons. For anyone who just started collecting the witchblade comicbook series and want to get their hands on previous hard to find issues i would recomend this collected edition.

Customer Reviews:
A must for your next Virginia road trip.......2004-06-17
If you're reading this review, then you probably already know that there are dozens of books promising to show you interesting places around D.C. for weekend trips. This book is different. The focus is entirely on Virginia, and the listed sites aren't so much just offbeat or odd, but genuinely interesting. In fact, I learned so much about places I'd never even heard of that I want to plan a few trips just to see them.
As a pure travel guide, this book has serious limitations. The book is broken down by major geographical regions (Shenandoah Valley, Northern VA, etc.), but within each section, sites weren't presented in any useful order, which required a lot of flipping back to check the maps. Nor were there recommended itineraries, but that was forgivable in a book that's more useful for browsing than for searching.
There were several curious errors, such as the year of JFK's assassination (1963, not 1961). Whenever I find easy-to-spot errors like these, it makes me have serious doubts as to the accuracy of more important information, like phone numbers and addresses. Be sure to double-check these before planning your trip.
Overall, though, I rate this guide more highly than other, similar books, like the usual Off the Beaten Path and Fodor's guides. Those books tell you how to get to where you want to go, but this one tells helps you decide /where/ you want to go in the first place.
Virginia Curiosities.......2003-01-28
An absolutely facinating book. I like to travel to unknown places within driving distance, and this book provides interesting insight on many places to visit right in my backyard. It is a easy read that is both entertaining and informative, and a must have for anyone who likes to learn about historic or cultural rich places to visit in Virginia.
Virginia Curiosities.......2002-11-29
As a Virginian and a traveler I find this little book informative, interesting and sort of like the "underground books" popular in lots of tourist destinations.
I've lived in Virginia all my life and most of the details and oddities in the book I had never heard before. This book is a delight and a must for Virginians who love the Commonwealth also a must for the tourist to Virginia who would like to see things off the beaten track, things that add greatly to your visit. Enjoy!

Capture the strange-but-true spirit of Virginia with this combination almanac, off-the-wall travel guide, and wacky news gazette. This book is a great read for old-school Virginians, newcomers, and anyone else who enjoys humor and local trivia with a twist
Customer Reviews:
What a Fun Way to Travel.......2007-03-30
Whether you're a newcomer to Virginia or a visitor - or a life-long resident, you'll be sure to find inspiration for countless day trips in your car in this intriguing book. If you love history, there's plenty for you to discover, including the farmhouse where Stonewall Jackson's arm is buried - and where people often leave lemons, a Jackson favorite, at the grave. If you enjoy pop culture, there's plenty for you in this book, as well.
The author's personality shines through, as early as in the book's dedication - which is to her husband, who doesn't listen to a word she says, and to her horse, who doesn't miss a word.
In this edition of Virginia Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities & Other Offbeat Stuff, Sharon Cavileer's second, she deletes information about sites in her first book that closed in the interim and she has added plenty of new material about quirky and intriguing places to visit in Virginia.
This book is organized by geographical sections of Virginia, so that you can easily set up a road trip - or two or three or more - for each area of our great state. Take your friends, your spouse and your kids and just enjoy the day!

Book Description
This book is about strategic thinking in Hispanic marketing. The size and economic importance of the Hispanic market in the US are attracting enormous attention. The buying power of the US Hispanic market is now larger than the GDP of the entire country of Mexico, and it is the second largest Hispanic market in the world. Businesses and institutions have launched major initiatives to reach this important segment. Yet, the number of qualified individuals who understand the market is small; and many of those already catering to the market still struggle to learn about its intricacies.
This book is a cultural approach to Hispanic marketing. Each of the chapters describes and explains the cultural principles of Latino marketing. Recent case studies help marketers relate to the material pragmatically. The book integrates concepts and practical examples and provides critical guidance to discern between alternative courses of action.
This book is not about repeating well-known statistics, but about the Hispanic market as a cultural target. It takes a profound look at the values, beliefs, and emotions of US Hispanics, which impact consumer behaviour. Each of the chapters has been the subject of public presentations and lectures to marketing professionals. It is their positive reactions as well as the authors dedication to Hispanic consumers which motivated this book.

Over 40 million Hispanics live in the U.S., representing a $750 billion economy. Corporations must recognize and incorporate Hispanic cultural values into their products, services, and communications. But what's the best method? What works? What doesn't? And more fundamentally, how can those corporations connect with the Hispanic consumer? Hispanic Marketing shows marketers how to best reach this widely misunderstood demographic, not by repeating well-known statistics, but through viewing the Hispanic market as a cultural target. The Korzennys take a profound look at the values, beliefs, and emotions of US Hispanics that impact consumer behavior and provide practical guidance on how to connect successfully with this group. Recent case studies help marketers relate to the material pragmatically. The book integrates concepts and practical examples and provides critical guidance to discern between alternative courses of action. As Dr. Feli
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book. .......2007-09-24
Many of the information out there on Hispanic marketing is repetitive and basic. This book digs deep into the cultural issues that frame the topics that concern marketers. It provides insight for the non_hispanic that will leverage their marketing skills with knowledge of a culture that otherwise seems like a big puzzle with too many parts.
Read this book before trying to penetrate the Hispanic market.......2007-02-23
Hispanic Marketing: A Cultural Perspective is a book that should be required reading for anyone trying to reach the lucrative Hispanic market. Before reading this book and "Marketing to Hispanics: A Strategic Approach to Assessing and Planning Your Initiative," I had with limited success targeted the Hispanic market for my company. I had even gone as far as learning Spanish to help me. But nothing has helped me understand and reach the Hispanic market more than these two books. Each book is packed with resources, tools, and information that will help any business executive or business owner reach the Latino market.
A true insight.......2007-01-21
This is truly a pioneer work in the field of Hispanic Marketing. The author really disects the theory and uses case studies to illustrate his points. Highly recommended in a field that is still in an infant stage and relies heavily on empiric information. His analysis goes beyond the 'business' aspect of Hispanic Marketing giving it a cultural perspective.
