5 out of 5 stars Eyes On Murder.......2002-08-30

Jack Herriman is a young private eye in San Francisco. He lives above Scene Of The Crime, an art gallery specializing in photos of crime scenes that were taken by his uncle Knut. Paul Raymonds, a SFPD detective sergeant and old partner of Jack's father, tells Jack he's sending a special client over in the morning. The relationship between Jack and Raymonds is strained, partly because Raymonds is cheating on Jack's aunt. The next morning, Jack meets Alex Jordan, a woman he figures out is Raymonds' lates girlfriend. Alex says her sister Maggie has vanished, and that she might be at a hippie commune called Lunarhouse. Once inside Lunarhouse, Jack finds himself up to his eyeballs in trouble. Maggie was there but is gone now, and some of the commune's big bouncers chase Jack from the scene. In no time at all, Jack's quest takes him through the dark alleys of the city, the bleak fall-out from emotional pain and suffering of a family, and force his own black rage and weakness to the surface so he has to finally deal with those things. Secrets are everywhere--even Jack has them.

Ed Brubaker currently scripts he BATMAN monthly comic, the CATWOMAN comic in which he revamped the character, POINT BLANK, SLEEPER, a SLAM BRADLEY back-up and THE COMPLETE LOWLIFE. Also a cartoonist, Brubaker's work has been nominated for many Eisner Awards. Michael Lark is a favorite artist on noirish-type comics. His graphic novel, THE LITTLE SISTER, written and drawn by him, based on Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe novel of the same title. Other work includes TERMINAL CITY, short stories for Vertigo's WINTER'S EDGE, SUPERMAN: WAR OF THE WORLDS, and BATMAN: NINE LIVES.

Brubaker's natural feel for crime writing lends Jack Herriman's world the luster of a dark and gritty reality. San Francisco is accurately portrayed without ever stepping too close to becoming a travelogue or a stereotype. The mystery and murders at the heart of the story, the years of loss and betrayal that come to culmination and spark to unleash the homicidal blaze that rocks Jack's world and leave him both more and less than what he had been are all played out honestly. Brubaker's got a gift for dialogue and allows the characters to come on stage and introduce themselves in ways even the excellent first-person narration can't quite do. Jack's world is full: he has his uncle and his uncle's girlfriend, Paul Raymonds--his dead father's partner, Steve Ellington--a friend and private eye for a big investigations firm, and an ex-girlfriend of his own that he can't quite get over. Besides getting entranced in the rich mystery that Brubaker presents, readers also get to wander through the impressive tapestry of pain, misery, loss, guilt, and half-truths that are Jack's life. The story offers quiet jokes, deep characters drawn in a few knowing lines, and the intensity of a steadily depressed spring. As Jack narrows the scope of his investigation, readers know that all hell is about to break loose: especially when additional bodies drop out of the woodwork and the violence escalates. Michael Lark's artwork is awesome: dark and moody, readers can smell the smoke in the seedy bars and will check the seats before sitting.

SCENE OF THE CRIME: A LITTLE PIECE OF GOODNIGHT is a wonderful graphic novel in the vein of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe detective novels. Brubaker says that Ross MacDonald was his favorite crime novelist, and a lot of the movement and rhythm of this tale shows that interest. Private eye fiction lovers who have never discovered the intricate joy of a graphic novel couldn't find a better place to start exploring the genre. Fans who already are familiar with Brubaker's work on BATMAN or CATWOMAN will want to add this one to their collections if it's not already there.

5 out of 5 stars All about the Twists..........2000-05-06

okay folks, lets face it, private eye stories are usually pretty predictable; PI gets hired on a case (mostly by a beautiful woman), does some digging, finds out more than he figured, puts it all together and catches the bad guy/guys. the art of a good story is how the author twists up those cliches and keeps you turning pages. well, ed brubaker has written a pretty twisty story here. the PI, jack herriman, takes on a missing persons case from a woman looking for her sister. he manages to find the sister pretty quickly but thats when the problems start, people die, questions stack up and he finds out fast the case is far from wrapped. the artwork, by michael lark, is quite good and does a very serviceable job of storytelling. overdrawn comic hero art would totally not work here and the slightly subdued colors fit the book perfectly giving it a slightly noirish feel without overdoing it. sorry, my plot summary wasn't more descriptive but you'll want to experience this for yourself. if you like quick paced mysteries this'll be right up your alley. this is a brilliant work of fiction and art... comics? for kids? ...not this one...

4 out of 5 stars Fine mystery, good cast of characters........2000-04-24

I like detective stories only when they're well told. Dashiel Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Ross Macdonald, Walter Mosley, Robert Parker, and Sue Grafton are the only ones I read regularly. Brubaker's work here is in that class.

Brubaker creates a great family-tangled-in-the-past mystery a la Ross Macdonald and adds a cast of supporting characters for the private detective that is only rivaled by those created by Robert B. Parker, from a persnickety crime-scene photographer to a bellicose national-agency private operator.

The real contribution this book makes to the genre, though, is its protagonist, Jack Herriman, whose youth makes for a refreshing contrast with most classic detectives but whose former morally questionable lifestyle, which began at the age of 14, gives him a moral depth of greater immediacy than that of most private eyes. While other detectives have seen everything, this kid has already done everything. This gives the story a new perspective, which Brubaker makes the most of.

I hope Brubaker takes time out from his regular series, Deadenders, to write more Herriman stories. And I hope Michael Lark sticks with the book, too -- his work is as good here as it was in Terminal City.

5 out of 5 stars Lives Up to Its Title.......2007-01-14

You might think that the title of this book over-sells itself. It doesn't. The author has chosen 7 well known prayers and presents them through the lens of his experience as a pyschologist, offering ways that we can incorporate them into our daily lives to enhance our sense of spirituality. His translations are thought provoking. I was especially moved to read the words of the prayers re-written by his clients in their own language. I have taught this book many, many times, bought dozens of copies, and have received feedback from many people that this text has, in fact, changed their lives.

5 out of 5 stars How Can I Ever Change My Life .......2006-05-26

When I first came across this Gem of a book by Rabbi Felder, I first thought, "How can I begin to change my Life at age 76?

Then I carefuly chose from the Chapter headings Chap Two ..."A Prayer to Help You Refocus When You're Stressed or Distracted" and Chapter Four, "A Prayer So You Can Unwind and Find Peace at Least Three Times a Day."

"Barookh Ata Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha-olam" or "Blessed are You, Eternal One, Energy Source of the Universe." Both chapters began with versions of this ancient Rabbinical Prayer!

Since I was in the process of auditing Prof Walter Brueggemann's Theology Class in The OLD TESTAMENT, I heard him began every Lecture with a written personal prayer. Seldom did he ever use Hebrew, other than, "YAHWEH, Creator Of The Universe." It became his ritual for opening each class with prayers related to his chosen O.T. scripture passage.

Since I've always felt that deeper need to be able to using the valued Hebrew Texts for my private prayers, I am enjoying an opportunity more often, I am fondly in touch with the Rabbi's texts. Reviewed by Retired Chaplain, Fred W Hood, "Barbara377" (Fayetteville Ga United States)

            Book Description

To help men and women from all faiths be more successful at reducing stress, overcoming procrastination, resolving family tensions, and deepening your sense of meaning and purpose, Dr. Leonard Felder has described and explained seven remarkable prayers that have proven effective for hundreds of his counseling clients over the past 20 years.

These prayers and meditations can help enormously even if you're not very religious or if you struggle with doubts and uncertainty about faith or belief. Each chapter describes the history, mystical meanings, various translations, and psychological benefits of some extremely profound prayers that can assist you in your daily life and relationships.

The author, Leonard Felder, Ph.D., has written 8 books that have sold over 950,000 copies and been translated into 14 languages. He is a licensed psychologist in private practice who has been studying, teaching and writing about the connection between spirituality and personal growth for many years. He has appeared on over 180 radio and TV interviews and won awards for his writing and for his involvement in human relations programs designed to combat racism, sexism, homophobia and religious prejudice. He and his wife have been together for 20 years and they live with their 8 year old son in the Los Angeles area.

Larry Dossey, MD, author of REINVENTING MEDICINE and HEALING WORDS, says, "The word is out in modern medicine: prayer can change your life and contribute to your health, creativity and fulfillment. Dr. Leonard Felder provides us with practical, down-to-earth guidance about bringing the spiritual practice of prayer into the everyday. Jewish wisdom, which is his focus, is universal and applicable to people of all faiths and traditions. At a time when prejudice and intolerance threaten our world, we need this more than ever."

Lisa Schiffman, author of GENERATION J, comments, "I don't even pray, I thought, so why should I read this book? Yet Leonard Felder moved me--a reluctant audience at first--and opened me to the idea that prayer could have a place in my life. I even tried out the spiritual techniques in Chapter Three to resolve a conflict I was having with a loved one and they worked beautifully. This book is a gift and I feel richer for having learned from the author's compassion, intelligence and honesty."

Harold Kushner, author of WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE, says, "What a blessing it is to introduce someone to the power of prayer, and this lovely book does that so well. SEVEN PRAYERS THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE is a splendid and profoundly thoughtful book. I recommend it highly."

If you or someone you know wants to explore the connection between spirituality and personal growth, this easy-to-read book is highly recommended by a variety of experts. No matter what your background, you will find it inspiring, thought-provoking and very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Great insights for living a more meaningful life.......2003-05-22

I liked this book because it was an unthreatening and insightful introduction to prayer. No one ever talks much about prayer, at least not the daily kind of prayer one might do in the morning, before meals, and at night. This book explains how to do it from a Jewish perspective, and makes a strong case for the benefits of prayer to a person's life. Since reading this book, I've tried to say a prayer before eating - it's great because it slows down my eating and adds some holiness to my day. If you're looking for a way to focus some of that nervous energy we all generate to something larger and wiser than yourself, this book will help you start.

5 out of 5 stars Reclaiming Jewish Prayer.......2002-03-24

When I picked up this book, I expected not to like it. It was, after all, exploring tradional Jewish prayers, so I expected it to be patriarchal and devoid of spirit. Instead, I have found a way to say these old prayers with new understanding.

Each chapter offers an everyday situation, and a traditional prayer to help one find the holiness in that moment. The reader is encouraged to think deeply about the words of the prayer, to question, to wrestle with it, to learn the roots of the words and think about all the different possible meanings.

Felder discusses the wisdom of the prayers, of the rabbis, in terms of our psychological needs, and much of his argument is convincing. Each chapter ends with the opportunity to pray in your own words, from the heart, so that each prayer is new.

Through reading this book, the Shema has opened up to me as an opportunity to affirm both the boundlessness and the indwellingness of G-d, rather than being an affirmation of G-d's maleness (Lord of the Universe.) That is what I hope for in any book - that it will nourish my mind and spirit.

            5 out of 5 stars Extremely powerful........2002-02-07

Larry Felder is a wise and gentle soul. With all the books out there addressing the public's desire to either return to their roots or to connect with some sense of large spirituality, few can match Felder's ability to give concrete steps for each of our hectic lives. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes about how incorporating prayer into daily life motions impacted his clients', his family's, and his own life. A true must-read for those interested in sharpening the focus of their lives and facing life with greater compassion.

5 out of 5 stars Accessible handbook for refocusing on a daily basis.......2001-08-26

Very easy to read and practical. I was surprised at how these prayers actually help with daily issues such as distractibility, stress reduction, and family conflicts. There is a great prayer to substitute for the cruder expressions that come to mind in certain traffic situations! I wish I'd had the book when I was younger, and will probably give it as an add-on to bar and bat mitzvah gifts. Felder's approach is so non-dogmatic and respectful of each individual's different approach to God that even my adolescent daughter has been "caught" reading it.

Engaging Film Criticism examines recent American cinema in relationship to its "imaginative intertexts," films from earlier decades that engage similar political and cultural themes. This historical encounter provides an unexpected and exciting way of reading popular contemporary films. Eclectic pairings include the Schwarzenegger action film True Lies with the Hitchcock classic North by Northwest, as well as the lampooned Will Smith comedy Wild, Wild West with Buster Keaton's silent feature The General. Using a theoretically and historically informed brand of criticism, Engaging Film Criticism suggests that today's Hollywood cinema is every bit as worthy of study as the classics.

4 out of 5 stars An Incredible Book for any magician.......2002-10-30

This is an excellent book for anyone involved in magic; amateur or professional. It contains an incredible number of tricks, many of which are professional quality. For example, the first trick in the book is very simple, repeatable (yes, repeatable), can be viewed from any direction, and I have used it to fool professionals on several occasions. The tricks are broken into neat categories and cover enough ground so almost anyone can find something they like. The book often has several ways to do the same effect giving the reader a choice.

Why only 4 stars? The illustrations are frequently not very good - an all-to-common problem with books on magic. The directions often leave something to be desired also. While I only found 1 trick I could not figure out (I have gone through over 1/2 of the book) it often took longer than was necessary because of imprecise directions. My example above took over half an hour to figure out, but is teachable from person to person in about 2 minutes. Also, many of the tricks are modifications of the same thing. Lastly, the fact that only a narrow area of magic is covered (and redundantly) may put off some readers.

Please note that most of the detractions above are, in my opinion, not as significant as the overall quality. If I could, I would rate this 4 and 1/2 stars - not quite perfect but very good.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Rope Magic.......1999-04-19

This book is a classic of magic. Anyone interested in doing magic with ropes must have this book. It's nearly 400 pages are packed full with just about everything a magician can do with a rope; penetrations, restorations, false knots, you name it. It's a small price to pay for this wealth of knowledge. -Diamond Jim Tyler

                Book Description

This ground-breaking best-seller reveals for the first time how the mighty and mysterious Federal Reserve operates -- and how it manipulated and transformed both the American economy and the world's during the last eight crucial years. Based on extensive interviews with all the major players, Secrets of the Temple takes us inside the government institution that is in some ways more secretive than the CIA and more powerful than the President or Congress.

5 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-02

"Secrets of the Temple" is a book that discusses the interaction of the Federal Reserve and Government economic policy. This book is basically a detailed analysis of the Reagan administration and the Volcker chairmanship of the Reserve.
Once again Mr. Greider teaches us how the "clock" works by taking us on an intimate tour through the internal mechanisms of the "clock". This is the hands on approach to learning. I like it. Mr. Greider takes us on a tour of the factory - from assembly to design and through sales and advertising.
This book is nearly 800 pages long. It's a bargain. If I had any negative criticism it would be that it contains too much information. But that seems to be Mr. Greider's style - no one is going to accuse him of not "doing his homework". This book is not a "read"; it is a "study".

2 out of 5 stars An Extremely Liberal Critique of the Fed.......2007-08-05

This book is NOT an impartial, journalistic account of the way the Federal Reserve works. From the beginning Greider writes with a liberal agenda and it shows. It's amazing that he apparently does understand the basic precepts of economics, but chooses to ignore their implications with regard to policy making. Instead of seeing the logical reasons behind policy decisions, he immediately leaps to the conspiracy theory explanation for why the Fed has failed to enact the ultra-liberal polcy he prefers.

This book is 717 pages long -- about 400 of those pages are Greider's editorials on the Fed. When he does talk about the actual players in the story and uses quotes from the interviews, the book is pretty good. However, too much of the book is focused on Greider's opinions and not enough on representing the viewpoints of the Chairman, the main character in the story. I feel that had Greider included more quotes from Volker, that it would have completely destroyed his argument.

Please don't make this the first book you read about the Federal Reserve -- read something that gives you both sides of the issues of monetary policy. Once you understand the basics of central banking, you'll be able to sort out the useful, factual reporting from the useless editorials. The facts are worth having, just be prepared to read through a lot of fluff to get to it.

                1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2007-06-26

How can a reader understand the Federal Reserve without reading the history of it's creaton? It's critics, and the history of a central bank in America and Europe? They can't. Any book that does explain the history of international and national banking would never get a good review from the mainstream media. And all you have to do is look it up. Read some of the associated books listed along with this for the history behind the Federal Reserve, a private institution that has never been audited.

Buy, "How the world really works," for one example. The Federal Reserve is run by the same robber barrons our history books tell us turned to philanthropy. Nonsense. They make money on our 54 trillion in debt, are the same people who created the United Nations, Trilateral Commision and Council on Foreign Relations.

Now, why, you ask yourself, would standard oil and banking magnate JD Rockefellar, and JP Morgan want an international one world organization?

That is the question. You remember Rockefellars Standard Oil and how it was 'broken up.' Right. Into Exxon, Mobil, Texaco and Chevron.

The same Rockefellars that strangely enough fund nearly every left wing organization in this country. Why? Bankers don't care who runs the country as long as we spend a ton of money and borrow it from them.

                They own both parties.

5 out of 5 stars good information about what we don't know.......2007-02-18

This book has a lot of information we are not being told

1 out of 5 stars No secrets here - just excellent propaganda.......2006-01-15

Quoting the first 2 sentences of the book:

"In the American system, citizens were taught that the transfer of political power accompanied elections, formal events when citizens made orderly choices about who shall govern. Very few Americans, therefore, understood that the transfer of power might also occur, more subtly, without elections."

Unfortunately, Greider is right about most Americans' stunning ignorance about how they're really governed, although one could argue that more and more people are waking up to the fact that all is not as it seems on the surface. So far, so good - but then, in the next paragraph, without mentioning the Federal Reserve by name, he says:

"It was part of the national government, yet deliberately set outside the electoral process, insulated from the control of mere politicians."

Good propaganda must be mostly truth to work. As I write, this book has a rating of 4 1/2 stars out of 5. This is an indication that the majority of reviewers have bought into the well spun propaganda Greider delivers.

The Federal Reserve is a 100% privately owned corporation, carefully set up to appear as though it is an arm of government. It was created solely for the benefit of it's shareholders, a significant proportion of which are foreign. Greider could have mentioned this extremely important fact at the outset. Instead he deliberately helps perpetuate the myth that "The Fed" is public.

He spends the rest of the 700+ pages going into excruciating detail about The Fed's decisions and their direct effects on the economy, with a focus on the time of Volcker's reign. If that's what you're looking for, this is the book for you. If you're looking for true insight into The Fed, its origins, who it benefits, and how it directly controls the largest economy in the world (and indirectly many other economies through their privately owned central banks) at the expense of everyone else, then I'd suggest reading "The Creature from Jekyll Island".

Why 1 star? I don't like propaganda deliberately designed to mislead people who are seeking truth about a subject which affects all of us. The few citizens that take the time to research a subject so important to all of us deserve better than to be distracted by true - but on the whole, irrelevant - information.
