4 out of 5 stars A histoical, evolutionary, and cultural analysis of clothing.......2000-04-23

Unfortunately there are not a lot of books written (that I'm aware of) that try to explain the need for clothes. Because of that, this is one of the best (if not the best) books on the subject.

He claims that humans started wearing clothes for protection. (There is some controversy on this subject. Some other scholars say that clothes were originally intended for decoration.) I feel that he does a fairly good job explaining this popsition.

Once clothing was invented, it had a profound impact. It separated us from the animals, and made humans something like gods. It increased sexual desire, linking clothing (and any subsequent lack of clothing) with sexuality. It differentiated classes, and distinguished males from females (and hindered females - thus keeping them under male authority). He also mentions some of the functional aspects of some types of clothing.

He mentions the history of various articles of clothing (such as hats and underwear).

The strenth of this book is its dealing with the history of clothing, and how it was important in our development. He does not adaquately explain why clothing is still required. He does have a chapter on nudism, but I found his arguments to be fairly weak.

I found this book to be an excelant book, and highly recomend it to anyone interested in why we wear clothes, and/or the history of clothing.

              Book Description

It's here! It's here! It's the "Chelsea Boys" book!

Chelsea Boys is a collection of Glen Hanson´s and Allan Neuwirth's popular comic strip known from magazines and newspapers throughout the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. The strip follows the antics, wild sexcapades, and everyday heartbreaks of three gay roommates: cuddly Nathan, gorgeous, buff Sky and the fabulous black club diva Soiree. Filled with humour, humanity, and wry observations of modern life, Chelsea Boys presents a family you've never seen before, and storytelling that speaks the truth rather than playing to stereotypes.

5 out of 5 stars Kudos to Hanson and Neuwirth's CHELSEA BOYS!.......2007-02-20

I think Chelsea Boys is THE gay comic for the new millennium! It has glamour, it has humour, it has feelings, it's colourful, sexy, at times cynical, crazy at times, at times homely, and Sky, Soiree and Nathan are so lovely! There are so many gay comics worth mention like Cruise's Wendel, J. Asal's Adam & Andy, Greg Fox 's Kyle's Bed and Breakfast, and many, many others, but Chelsea Boys have something of them all, and are really , IMHO the Gay Comics Champions! You remember Poppers by the alas late Mills, fom Meatmen? It featured a hunk-like sky, a not-so successful ordinary guy (like Nathan) and a coloured guy (not glamorous as Soirre, though, but he was black). something of Mill's Poppers revives in Chelsea, I feel.

5 out of 5 stars Chelsea Boys - In Living Color!.......2006-11-23

Chelsea Boys, an internationally known strip from creators Glen Hanson and Allan Neuwirth is back and is in living color! "Steppin' Out" picks up where their first book "Chelsea Boys" leaves off, but this time, we are treated to seeing the further exploits of Nathan, Soiree and Sky in color. You don't have to be a member of the gay community to appreciate the topics that face the 'boys,' and whether you are a returning fan or a first time reader of the series, you will fall in love with the rich and complex characters. My only wish is that the next installment comes soon, or better yet - an animated series... Networks: are you listening???

              Book Description

Chelsea Boys is the first collection of Glen Hanson and Allan Neuwirth's popular syndicated comic strip that appears in magazines, newspapers, and websites throughout the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. The strip follows the often outrageous antics, wild sexcapades, and everyday heartbreaks of three gay roommates, as different as can be from one another, living together in a three bedroom apartment in the heart of New York's trendy Chelsea neighborhood: cuddly Nathan, a short, neurotic forty-something native New Yorker; gorgeous, buff Sky, a naive yet deeply spiritual art student raised on a farming commune in Canada; and the fabulous black club diva Soiree, who masks his inner pain with a rapier wit and outrageous style. Filled with humor, humanity, and wry observations on life in a modern setting, Chelsea Boys presents a family you've never seen before, and storytelling that speaks the truth rather than playing to stereotypes.

Glen Hanson, a native of Toronto, is an internationally acclaimed designer, illustrator, writer, and art director. His award-winning work has appeared in Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek, MTV, Comedy Central, VH-1, Vogue, The New York Times, and Maxim. His character designs have been seen on animated shows such as Beetlejuice and Daria, and he designed the album cover for Blink 182's The Enema Strikes Back.

Allan Neuwirth, a native New Yorker, writes, produces, directs, and designs for a wide variety of media, with a strong emphasis on comedy and animation. His host of writing credits includes Courage, the Cowardly Dog, Gadget and the Gadgetinis, Toonsylvania, and Dragon Tales. Together, the men have written stories for DC Comic's Cartoon Network comic books, designed characters for Hoppin' Jon, an independent animated short, and collaborated on Wonder Woman vs. The Red Menace for DC Comics.

              5 out of 5 stars A lighthearted approach that packs a punch!.......2006-08-06

Neuwirth and Hanson use the lighthearted medium of a comic strip to deliver deeper and more serious messages about the reality of being a modern gay man. Every strip has a lesson to ponder and the authors smash sterotypes wide open. Ironic indeed that the strip is named Chelsea Boys given the author's overwhelming proven point that sterotypes are rather silly given the fact that noone indeed ever lives up to the expected ideal.

Neuwirth and Hanson add a work of great relivance and importance to the cannon of gay literature. This is a must have for every gay man's libray! A great gift for friends too!

              5 out of 5 stars Great collection!.......2003-09-23

Hanson and Neuwirth have created warm, acerbic, witty, and utterly human characters who totally defy the Chelsea Boy stereotype. So don't let the strip's title fool you. These guys are universal-just like gay men from Pasadena to Poughkeepsie. This is a great collection, both for the terrific drawings and the wonderfully inclusive stories about these three gay roommates and people of ages, races, and sexual orientations in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC, THE PERFECT GIFT!.......2003-09-22

I must confess- I didn't follow the chelsea boys saga before I got this Book; Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down!
I caught myself Laughing out loud late at night like a lunatic.
The characters are beautifully illustrated and developed. I feel like my friends and I have traits from all the characters, Which makes it more fun, sometimes scary.
To ME is like a GAY- SEX AND THE CITY.
KUDOS to Glenn and Allan's talent.
I Can't wait for this wonder duo's new book.
Again, this one is a perfect gift for any Occasion (Im getting a few books for those last minute emergency gifts)
Buy this book and give it away, anyone could use a bit of laughter this days.

5 out of 5 stars Chelsea Boys rocks.......2003-09-22

Chelsea Boys is a very funny tale of 3 main characters that defies the norm we're used to seeing in the gay community. Rather than limit themselves to dating and sex(fun things never the less),the authors have tackled loss of parents, gay parenting and racial issues. This isn't your grandma's strip. Even though this format is known as a comic strip, I like to think of it as a complete story. Every strip follows the characters as they negotiate life with each other and with the greater community at large. Where else do we see such diversity in the gay community. Blonde and buff, short and jewish, black and sassy. On the surface, these may seem like stereotypes but if you read into their stories, they have to face many complex issues in their lives. Even though the story takes place in the neighborhood of Chelsea, it really represents all of Manhattan with it's wit and humanity.

5 out of 5 stars Thrilled to see "the Boys" collected finally.......2003-09-22

I have been following the Chelsea Boys for years and am thrilled to see that they have finally gotten their stories together in a book. In my opinion, this is the only strip out there in which the characters open themselves enough to expose the reasons for who they are. The boys deal with real issues that face all of us (and I mean all of us - gay or straight) in real life and gives depth and "realness" to gay people.

The writing by Allan Neuwirth is insightful and poignant. And, as always, Glen Hanson's illustrations are brilliant. I look forward to future additions to the Chelsea Boys library.

1922 and 1924. From Jumbo Books, Two Complete Books in One. Around the World in Ten Days features a futuristic airplane. Interestingly, the science fiction element of the Fantastic Flight genre was often exceeded by the rapid advancements being made in aeronautics. In Boys' Book of Famous Soldiers, McSpadden, the author of Robin Hood, has written personal portraits of Washington, Grant, Lee, Napoleon, Wellington, Gordon, Roberts, Kitchener, Haig, Joffre, Foch and Pershing. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty or faded.

I believe this book to be for any woman that has been dumped by a man they loved. It can really pick your spirits up and give you that deserved burst of laughter. I have already given it to two girlfriends in the last month as "Sorry you got Dumped", gifts. They loved it. So I highly recommend it to any woman for that much deserved laughter.

                                Book Description

Filmmaker David Lynch's work is viewed here as patriotic and Puritanical. This Lynch is an idealistic conservative on a reformer's mission. Lynch promotes a return to the values inherent in a mythological America, but he indulges in a voyeuristic pleasure which he simultaneously condemns. Like Jeffrey peeking through the slats of Dorothy's closet in Blue Velvet, the viewer of Lynch's work is a rationalist plagued by his dreams; intrigued and repulsed, fascinated and judgmental, he both craves and resists cultural assimilation. Works presented include all features from Eraserhead to Mulholland Drive, shorts such as The Amputee and The Grandmother, and contributions to television such as Hotel Room and, of course, Twin Peaks.

This study develops an idea of Lynch's politics, analyzes his work, and explores Lynch's paradox of condemning an immoral world through disturbing images and concepts, and touches on such points as the identifiable figure of evil in his works as well as the archetypes of the nymphet, well-meaning traditionalist, and struggling ethicist. Also included are a history of moralistic criticism in American literature and a review of existing Lynch criticism within this context.

5 out of 5 stars proof in the pudding.......2006-06-29

The reactions of readers to Pervert in the Pulpit say it all. Anyone interested in Lynch should be engaging this book, not dismissing it. Some reviewers call it liberal, others nihilist, some say it is completely wrong and others thoroughly convincing - the sure sign of a must read. I don't agree with all of it, but I cannot watch any of Lynch's films again without thinking of Johnson's argument. The way he frames Lynch's hyper-morality does indicate an ideology as Lynchian as the weird images and funky stories that have become Lynch's trademarks. Labels certainly can't contain or diminish Johnson's critique. Read this book, if just to argue with it.

                                1 out of 5 stars completely wrong.......2006-02-04

Okay, I'm a fan, not a critic. I didn't read this entire book, just skimmed it after I got the basic gist of it. I'd suggest to any Lynch fan to try to get this from the library before buying it, which luckily I did, because you won't want to own it. This writer is convinced his theories are correct and everyone else, including David Lynch himself, are the ones misintepreting. One thing I know he gets wrong: he claims Lynch takes himself so seriously that there is no irony or humor in his work. Just because you don't get it, doesn't mean it isn't there, Lynch's unique sense of humor shows up in all his work. And to claim that the study of "good" and "evil" in dramatic fashion forwards a conservative agenda makes no sense to me whatsoever. I guess you either "get" Lynch or you don't, and this writer does not. The only thing I got out of reading it was to make note of the other writers he refers to who he says are all wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of attitude, little theory..........2006-02-04

This is a fun read, if only for the attitude. On theory, the text is more than a bit light: Cinephiles after more heavy current philosophical grist should seek to grind elsewhere. Johnson's reliance on Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Freud and Sartre, et al., also indicate his modernist tendencies, which is, of course, in academia these days, still passé, if not taboo, though that doesn't make his argument irrelevant. It's sort of refreshing to lie back and let Johnson make his point, even if he reads, at times, like an old fashioned muckraker.

                                5 out of 5 stars A great read...even for neophytes!.......2006-01-05

First, I'm not a Lynch fan, and second, not an academic, but my nephew is a Lynch fanatic, so I decided to buy him a book on Lynch for Christmas. (I am amazed at the iconographic industry devoted to Lynch products!) I was inclined to buy Pervert in the Pulpit for the cover art alone, but then I read the reviews and had to know what the controversy was all about. When the book arrived I started thumbing it out of curiosity. Then I couldn't put the book down. Now I'm watching Lynch's videos and following Johnson's analysis film by film. So far, I'm not just impressed with his argument, I'm convinced.

2 out of 5 stars Iconoclasm is fine and dandy..........2005-12-30

I suppose each new micro-generation of film students must kill its father. However, this book is, sadly, boring. It is boring because it focuses on the content of the films, whereas what makes Lynch's films interesting and unconservative are their form (which has become increasingly anti-narrative) and visual qualities. Furthermore, most of his films clearly depict the deep well of misery beneath middle-class American values. It is true that there is something retro about Lynch, and specifically some of his moral scenarios remind me of old melodramas. Clearly, melodrama was a hugely conservative genre; its whole point was to tell women that any deviation from cookie-cutter domesticity would destroy them and their families.
However, melodrama is also a fascinating genre, and I don't think we should confuse Lynch's somewhat nostalgic (albeit questioning) quotation of melodrama and other forms of Americana for the thing itself.

"Mainstream" critics tend not to be very sophisticated about either film form or politics, so I am mystified why Johnson's conformity to mainstream critical opinion is regarded by some of the reviewers on this site as a selling point. I can only assume that Johnson's book succeeds in tapping into the anti-intellectualism of our culture, and THAT'S what I would call conservative.

                                Book Description

The forced migration of artists and scholars from Nazi Germany is a compelling and often wrenching story. The story is twofold, of impoverishment for the countries the musicians left behind and enrichment for the United States. The latter is the focus of this eminent collection, which approaches the subject from diverse perspectives, including documentary-style newspaper accounts and an exploration of Walt Whitman's poetry in the work of Paul Hindemith and Kurt Weill.
The flood of musical migration from Germany and Austria from 1933 to 1944 had a lasting impact. Hundreds of musicians and musicologists came to the United States and remained here, and the shaping power of their talents is incalculable. Several essays provide firsthand insights into aspects of American cultural history to which these émigrés made essential contributions as conductors, professors, and composers; other essays tell of the traumatic experience of being exiled and the difficulties of finding one's way in a foreign country. While the migration infused the U.S. with a distinctly European musical awareness, at the same time the status and authority of its participants tended to intervene in the development of a genuinely American cultural voice. The story of the unprecedented migration that resulted from Nazism has many dimensions, and Driven Into Paradise illuminates them in deeply human terms.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting academic work.......2002-05-06

The premise of Driven into Paradise involves the forced exodus of so many European classical musicians. Each of the essays in this book deals with this theme, albeit in a rather academic and dull manner. Thus I would not recommend it as light reading. By contrast, is a serious musicological work that analyzes a unique cultural phenomena associated with the Holocaust; namely, what was the effect of this musical exodus not only on the United States but on Europe as well?

Unfortunately, the collection the essays that comprise Driven into Paradise come up with some fairly predictable conclusions. The first, the conclusion that the United States gained from the cultural expertise of the refugees, is not arguable. The U.S. lacked the cultural resources of Europe and gained composers such as Erich Wolfgang Kornwald, Kurt Weill, Paul Hindemith, and a host of others, as well as some world-class performers and teachers.

However, the second, that Nazi Germany became a musical wasteland, is more difficult to validate. We don't really know what the musical standards were during the 1930's in Germany. Recording equipment was certainly inadequate by today's standards. Moreover, orchestral playing around the globe was far below the current standards demanded of professionals, so even with adequate recording systems, we would not be able to evaluate the German orchestras of Nazi Germany against the largely Jewish ones of the United States. Finally, the Germans still possessed a number of first-rate artists including Richard Strauss, Furtwangler, Karajan, and many others.

Driven into Paradise also contains a great deal of discussion about the plight of refugee musicians relocated in the U.S. There were the usual difficulties with language as well as the expected clashes between native-born musicians and the European émigrés. Nevertheless, this flood of immigrants was perhaps better off than their counterparts from the 19th century. The largely Jewish immigrants were well-educated professional musicians. The cliché that music is a universal language certainly helped these people in their attempts to procure employment in orchestras, as teachers, conductors, composers, or soloists.

Thus, while Driven into Paradise offers a promising study of the effects of the Nazis on the musical arts, it doesn't deliver any conclusions that are not predictable. The book is, therefore, hardly a path-breaker. Nevertheless, it has much to recommend it provided that the reader possesses a sophisticated knowledge of classical music.
