Customer Reviews:
Good book, but you provided the wrong information.......2002-01-08
Mario Sorrenti is not dead. You mentioned in the article that he died from a drug overdose. This, however, is not true. Mario's brother, Davide, died. Sorrenti has published a book on the life of his brother called "The Machine."
Chatty, Popular History of Modeling Since 1950.......2001-04-01
A book like this will normally be expected to contain lots of outstanding photographs with beautiful reproductions. Oddly, the photographs are the weakest part of the book. Much of the book is focused on brief, superficial interviews with famous model industry personalities conducted by David Bailey. The essays primarily repeat what popular magazines have said about the industry over the years, and are written in a similar style to that used in fashion magazines. If you are a younger person, and want to know about what modeling was like before the 90s, the text will probably be of some interest to you.
The essays begin with one about the role of the female model, and how these women emerged from being mannequins (or a blank canvases) who were often expoited into becoming well-known personalities who often developed nonmodeling careers (such as acting). The history of how agents went from controlling the industry (and getting 40 percent of the fees paid to the models) to losing control is then described. Some of the top fashion photographers are profiled next, along with their styles. Brief essays also look at designers, editors, the supermodel phenomenon, those who were harmed by becoming models (especially during heroin chic), and the fashion legends. These essays are the best part of the book
Brief interviews are reported with Isabella Blow; Karen Elson; Cindy Crawford; Jerry Hall; Michael Flutie; Eileen Ford, Lillian Bassman; Bruce Weber; Penelope Tree; Arthur Elgort, Peter Lindbergh; Patrick Demarchelier; Isabella Rossellini; Angelica Huston; Carmen Dell'Orefice; Isaac Mizrahi: Vivienne Westwood; Karl Lagerfeld; Jay Alexander; Liz Tilberis; Polly Mellen: Franca Sozzani; Anna Wintour; Christy Turlington; Naomi Campbell; Helena Christensen; Suzie Bick; James King; Jean Shrinpton; Dorian Leigh; Iman; Karen Elson; and Kate Moss. If you know much about fashion or modeling, little new will emerge here other than occasional snide comments about individuals.
All of the photographs are done by David Bailey. My favorite images in the book (as reproduced here) are:
Peter Lindbergh (p. 23)
Naomi Campbell (pp. 24-25)
Iman (p. 37)
Jerry Hall (pp. 53, 164)
Catherine Deneuve (p. 65)
Jean Shrimpton (pp. 69, 169, 185)
Anne Piaggi (p. 118)
Anna Wintour (p. 127)
Christy Turlington (p. 137)
Carmen Dell'Orefice and Dorian Leigh (p. 171).
Both the photographs and the reproductions are unremarkable. I came away thinking (once again) that David Bailey was lucky that he was able to photograph Jean Shrimpton and Catherine Deneuve so often. With other models, the results are not as good.
Having looked at this material made me realize how much fashion focus is like a brief glance, arresting . . . but then moving on to look at something else. It must be terribly difficult to go from obscurity to the center of attention to being of no more interest to most people. I admire those who can handle it well.
What can you do to make your life become a progression of rewarding accomplishments, so that maturity launches you further along in satisfactions? When you answer that question, you will have obtained a profound benefit from this panorama of fashion history.
When your heart and personality shine, you always look your best! But more importantly, you feel and act your best then, too.
Pure Drivel.......1999-09-02
This book has no redeeming value whatsoever. The photographs look bad, the content is bad and many of the models are has-beens who never were. Overall a waste of paper pulp, although I initially picked it up because I liked the cover.
Very informative.......1999-07-05
I have browsed through this book and find it extremely informative and creative in a way that it shows an insight to photography and models. The video was far better because it included all views and interviews that the society have been wanting to hear. The book may be lacking in some way as it did not show some models like Kate Moss in it's covers, I find this dissapointing as the video showed Kate much more. It is a pitty how documantaries on Kate are never made but all the other models get much more focus swirled around them.

Wonderful for a classroom!.......2003-09-08
I got this colorful book game/poster/punch out model set when I was in 5th grade along with a rain forest one. it is great! the colorful pages caused me to want to learn more about the animals in the pictures creating a lifelong love of aquatic animals. I still have the books, and want the rest in the set. I am studying to be a teacher and you know that these books/ posters/ and games will adorne my classroom. (the models are long since gone as I got these when I was 10 years old. :-)

Customer Reviews:
Modern Ninja Manga.......2006-03-16
In volume two, a beautiful bishie named Mikagami sets his sights on Yanagi. What does he want with Recca's "Princess?" Mikagami warns Recca in no uncertain terms to stay away from Yanagi.
Intimidated by the water sorcerer, Recca acquieses. But will his vow to Yanagi overpower his fear of his opponent? There is a fight in a house of mirrors.
In the meantime, Recca meets a new ally and friend in a teacher, who has an extensive collection of ninja secrets - secrets that may cost him his life.
The tornaments end!.......2006-03-11
The tornament arc that's ran for so many volumes has finally come to an end. And boy what an end it comes to! Every page of the final fight was awesome and the hook for the next arc is intruging. Must buy for Recca fans.
an action manga through the whole series.......2005-08-08
If you are waiting for this series to be finished, it will take long time... in Japan, the series have already ended by volume 33
lots of actions in this book (almost only action).
I finished reading the series(all 33), and got kind of bored of all the actions that was going on the book because there were lot of part that did not have to be on the book. Still all and all the story of the book was good.
I recommend this book for those who loves the actions.
Good luck reading all the 33 books!
Flame of Recca.......2004-11-07
This book is so good that your eyes will bleed. My favorite character is Recca because he can put his arm on fire. His biggest rival is a mystirious women that tries realy hard to confuse Recca. Shes so desprate that she gives a thing to Reccas rival or friend and then she gets super wind abilitys and tries to kill Recca.
Flame Of Recca Rocks!.......2004-05-18
This Manga really rocks! I don't know about the english version as i am reading the chinese version of it! But it is still a very enjoyable and full of action comic book! I really reconmend to people who like reading comics!
Customer Reviews:
I've Read The Book Three Times!.......2004-09-13
Every couple of years, I've felt the need to reread this extremely entertaining book. Not only is it witty, informational, and intelligent, but it is also a great quick read. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in learning the facts about the law field, or anyone looking for an intelligent read.
Everything in this book is absolutely true!.......1999-04-16
My husband and I are both (gasp) Philadelphia lawyers who have worked for a couple of different larger firms (no names mentioned!) there. The night we brought it home, we read aloud and laughed so hard we were crying. Especially useful for incoming associates (whose hearts have not yet become hard) are the descriptions of the "Power Partner," "Puny Partner" and "Party Girl Paralegal." Newcomers: learn these lessons well before you are burnt!!! ;-)
Hands down, the best stuff were the ads at the end, especially the rainmaking self-help guide for insurance defense hacks who hope to generate new business by passing themselves as experts in totally foreign fields. I have known several of these types... hmmmm......
A Classic!.......1999-01-27
This book is a must-read for all law students, lawyers and anyone who knows them. Very, very funny and sadly true commentary on lawyer life. Fun for the whole firm!
Irreverently funny!.......1999-01-13
The Rodent is to the law what Dilbert is to engineering -- a sad but true commentary on the state of affairs in a profession. This book should be a must read for all future lawyers! Of course the appropriate warning would be in order: "Caution before spending $100K on your education, this is what is in store!"
Book Description
Thisnbsp;unique volume treats films as philosophy, rather thannbsp;speaking of films only in relation to philosophy and subjugating the film in question to pre-existing theories. Bringing together essays from some of the leading scholars in the field, the book also features an interview with Stanley Cavell in which he explains his most recent thinking on the belief that films can think; that they can, indeed, function as philosophy.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent collection. If you read one book on film, read this........2007-04-25
This collection builds on seminal work on Film by the philosopher Stanley Cavell, whose works include, The Claim of Reason: Wittgenstein, Skepticism, Morality, and Tragedy & The World Viewed: Reflections on the Ontology of Film, Enlarged Edition. Cavell's work, in turn, is deeply influenced by the Philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein (see the collection The New Wittgenstein).
The approach to film explored in this collection is one that eschews the application of theory to film. Film studies has generally approached film through theory: psychoanalytic, Marxist, Feminist, cognitive etc. This serves to render the film under discussion. This collection also eschews the approach evident in recent books on the philosophy of film or those that use films to illustrate philosophy (e.g. Rowlands' The Philosopher at the End of the Universe). While the books in the latter category have their place, they merely use film as a resource for the dramatisation of philosophical problems. In contrast the essays in the collection under review here read the films under discussion as doing philosophy, exploring philosophical themes, actively thinking through philosophical problems. The collection contains a fascinating interview with Stanley Cavell. Stephen Mulhall revisits his own earlier writings on the Alien films, first discussed in On Film (Thinking in Action) (Thinking in Action). Phil Hutchinson and Rupert Read bring to life the philosophical work undertaken by Christopher Nolan's film Memento, seeing it as a therapeutic dialogue in the manner of Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations (3rd Edition). The book also contains chapters on Fight Club (Widescreen Edition) and Terence Malick's The Thin Red Line (Malick was a student of Cavell's at Harvard; the lead character in the film is named Witt...). Contributors include Simon Glendinning, author of The Idea of Continental Philosophy; Simon Critchley; and Andrew Klevan.
A groundbreaking and enjoyable collection.

Book Description
This fascinating book brings more than one hundred previously unpublished Shaker songs to the attention of scholars, performers, and aficionados of folk music. A Shaker Musical Legacy introduces Shaker songs and dances that Brother Ricardo Belden, the last male member of the Hancock Shakers, gave in original manuscript form to Jerry and Sybil Count, the first directors of the Shaker Village Camp. The Opdahls have selected from and transcribed this music and included dance directions to honor Brother Ricardo's hope that doing so would keep alive a part of the Shaker heritage.
The songs are transcribed as modern musical scores for use by contemporary musicians and singers. Many examples are also shown in their original Shaker musical notation. Step-by-step instructions show how to perform the dances as the Shakers themselves danced them. Explanatory notes introduce each of nine musical sections.

Great book for beginners and advanced.......2005-02-28
I am only 13 and this book really brought out my love for card tricks. It has card tricks for anyone and it has some great tips. This is my first book on card tricks and i loved it. So try it out and you might too.
Great resource of real card magic!.......2004-03-30
Don't be put off by the price. This volume contains a surprising number of great tricks, and clearly explains a good number of the basic techniques. It is written for the beginner, but it is fairly comprehensive, and the intermediate card magician will find much here as well. Come on, even if I'm wrong, look how much money you're out.
