FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY.......2005-10-07
This is hilarious stuff! I wish my wife understood this kind of humor.
Unbeyondlivable how funny this is.......2003-05-03
With the classic bear not wanting to be shot pointing at his friend seen through a rifle's telescopic lens cartoon on the front cover you know that you're in for a treat.
Beyond the Far Side contains some of the all time classics such as Superman checking for change in the coin slot of a phone booth while getting changed, "Say what's a mountain goat doing way up here in a cloud bank?" seen through the cockpit window of a plane and the classic smoking dinosaurs picture with the caption "the real reason dinosaurs became extinct."
Once you have one Far Side cartoon you have to own them all. The only way you can do that is to buy every single one of these Far Side books. This isn't a bad one to start off with.
Tip it may be cheaper to buy The Far Side Galleries which are three of these books put together so compare prices.
Humor for the thinking mind.......2003-02-21
Most cartoons may come across as a bit dumb, but not the Far Side. If you like to think and laugh at the same time and are sick of the same old silly antics, don't miss this little book. The drawings are great and the subtle, implied humor even better. This is my favorite cartoon book to date.
Highly recommended.
Downright Hilarious!.......2001-10-19
As good as any of the other books in the far side, this book shows an intelligent witty humor! I regret having not read the Far Side comics earlier than I did, because they are honestly funny! A highly recommended read!
Humor with a brain.......1998-03-19
Gary Larson's The Far Side continues to please. These are the jokes great greeting cards are made of. As only the best humorists like Jerry Seinfeld do, Mr. Larson makes the reader smile and laugh the most when making us laugh at ourselves. In his cartoons, the reader will see the idiosyncracies, rigidity, and sarcasm of everyday life. His cartoons are caricatures: hyperbole. So that, in a way similar to Jerry Seinfeld, Larson makes us feel more confident and pleased with the humor of it all because we are not laughing at anyone's expense.

Delightful stories of the little girl who would grow up to be Laura Ingalls Wilder's great-grandmother! Set in Scotland.
Book Description
What do superheroes, Spam, "The THING?" Yoda, snipe, Jell-O, flatulence and cancer all have in common?
Until now, not much.
But, "Flying with Scissors: A Different Perspective on Childhood Cancer" changes all that by weaving these and other unlikely topics into a totally unique look at childhood cancer and the kids who have moved beyond the illness. Having trained under the greatest guru of all-life--these kids are set on reminding us that the world is not made up of problems, but of dreams, hope, and triumph.
Hilarious and heartfelt, "Flying with Scissors" takes the personal experiences and insights of children who have battled cancer and turns them into universal truths that relate to each of us. It provides a non-traditional look at a typically solemn topic. "Flying with Scissors" is a resource and companion for anyone close to a child going through the cancer experience. Possibly more importantly, "Flying with Scissors" provides guidance for all of us, valuable insights for living life-every, every day.
And, like DC Comics used to say, "It's more fun than a barrel full of genetically-altered winged monkeys!
Customer Reviews:
The best non-fiction story I've ever read..........2006-05-07
Flying with Scissors is a truly inspirational book. In fact, it's a work of art. The humor and illustrations will have you laughing and crying. Some of the true-to-life accounts of children fighting their own battles with cancer made my heart warm in a way that rarely happens when I read a book. Though non-fiction, the story read like a novel. It was honest, funny, daring at times, and extremely well-written. I am truly impressed and highly recommend Flying With Scissors to anyone who has a loved one with childhood cancer, or any other person who wants to read a truly inspirational book that will make you want to love more, enjoy family and friends more, and celebrate life to the fullest. I can't help but rave about this one. I hope to see more books from Bob Wallace. Well done!
Loved it........2006-05-03
This book has so much heart, you can't help but love Uncle Bob and his amazing experiences with these kids. I connected with this book on more levels than you could know; it reaches out to you and speaks to your deepest fears- and helps you laugh at them.
This book is the epitome of hope. What better way to illustrate strength, knowledge, and love than through the experiences of a child-turned-adult who has been forced to live with cancer? I laughed at adventures of pirates and spam, cried for those who were lost, and marvelled at stories of courage and companionship.
Everyone is touched by cancer in some way in their lives. This book accepts the horrors of the world and makes them, if not less real, then less overwhelming. It encourages you to laugh at every situation, live every day like it's your last, and never lose sight of what really matters. It's a story that will make you smile and warm your heart; I highly recommend it.
Superheros and Spam.......2006-03-04
This isn't one of those sad, heartwrenching books about kids with cancer. It uses humor, anecdotes, and superhero references to express how strong these kids really are. It offers a peek into the lives of children with cancer, through the eyes of a camp counselor. It's a must read for everyone, even if you don't personally know a child with cancer. It reminds us that there is more to life than what we take for granted. This book makes you look at kids with cancer differently. Not only that, but I now look at Spam as not only an alternative food product, but as an endless source of entertainment! Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
Book Description
This visually stunning volume-the first movie poster book devoted exclusively to independent films-showcases some of the most provocative and original movie posters ever created. From David Lynch's cult classic Eraserhead to Sofia Coppola's recent sensation Lost in Translation, the book displays the incredible range of creativity exhibited in hundreds of independent film posters.
More than 100 internationally recognized directors are profiled-including Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee, the Coen brothers, Jean-Luc Godard, and Pedro Almodóvar, to name a few. In his text, Dave Kehr, an entertainment writer, most notably for The New York Times, captures the creative excitement of independent films and their growing importance to the global cultural scene. Drawing on the rich and diverse collection of the Posteritati Gallery in New York, one of the premier dealers in vintage and contemporary movie art, this is an essential sourcebook on the independent film movement and the feature films, documentaries, and directors that have shaped the face of its history. AUTHOR BIO: Spencer Drate and Judith Salavetz have designed packages for many popular artists, including Bon Jovi, Lou Reed, U2, and Talking Heads. Drate was the author of Abrams' Swag: Rock Posters of the '90s . Dave Kehr, of Italian Film Posters, has written about movies for The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, and the Chicago Tribune.

Paints a fascinating portrait of Ralph Stanley.......2002-04-14
Just finished reading John Wright's book called "Traveling the High Way Home: Ralph Stanley and the World of Traditional Bluegrass Music."It was published in 1993 by the University of Illinois press. I think all of you would enjoy this interesting look into Ralph Stanley's world and should add this book to your library. The book is not a personal biography. Rather, it starts with one chapter of biographical information, but the bulk of the book is testimony from people in Stanley's world to provide a portrait of him. Most of these transcribed statements are from interviews that John Wright conducted in the mid-80s. I enjoyed reading these insider views from musicians, record company executives, promoters, producers, and fans. This oral history compilation includes statements, in their own words, from individuals like J.E. Mainer, Ruby Rakes Eubanks, George Shuffler, Melvin Goins, Larry Sparks, Curly Ray Cline, Jack Cooke, Dick Freeland, Junior Blankenship, Charlie Sizemore and many others.
I personally would have liked the author to further research and explore Ralph and Carter's upbringing and life. Reading all of the interviews is another approach to gain an insight into Stanley's life, but it does require the reader to assimilate a large quantity of information and draw their own conclusions.
After reading this book, my basic conclusions are pretty much what I already knew: that Ralph Stanley is a man of much integrity and high ideals who adheres to the code of the mountains. His own interview in Chapter 5 of the book is actually a composite of material from eight interviews conducted by various people between 1966-1987. This chapter should be required reading for everyone involved in bluegrass music.
The subtitle of this book ("Traveling the High Way Home") is based on a classic Molly O'Day song which Wright feels could "easily serve as a theme song for Ralph Stanley, personally as well as artistically." This book paints a picture of Ralph Stanley as a man who is an astute and confident professional, who "holds himself up and respects the music." Stanley is still presenting his art, which he calls "the old-time style of what they call bluegrass music." Wright's book is an important and fascinating look at the man and his old-time style. Why I like this book a lot!.......2007-08-01
I'm not a great chess player, but I'm a pretty good one and own about 50 books on the game. I have reveiwed a number of chess books on Amazon and I still enjoy playing the game very much.
Although I am not a beginner, I think this is a useful book for beginners and intermediates because it will provide you with the framework you need to build on as you learn. How high you can build a building depends upon the strength of the foundation. What this book provides is a broad intellectual framework to build your openings strategies on. It will help you learn about traps, different lines of development and tactics more quickly by providing a strong foundation in the most common openings.
While there are some people that can digest a lot of this material quickly, I am not one of them. Although I've been playing chess for years having an easily digestible collection of openings and an understanding of the logic behind them makes learning more advanced aspects of play easier. It can be very overwhelming to a beginner or anyone to navigate this territory without a good high level map. This is the way I think of this book and I wouldn't think of NOT owning it although I have many other books on this topic.
Small Pocket Guide on major openings.......2006-08-09
This is a book well suited for a beginner who just wants a general idea of what the major chess openings are. It is certainly not "concise". If you are a beginner and want to look into the various openings and want some very general ideas and not a lot of tedious variations, then this is a good book. Though I like the more detailed book of this same nature, "Understanding The Chess Openings" by Collins, and would recommend to gain a grasp of opening tactcis getting a book on opening traps - a book on opening traps will give you a good idea of the strong points and pitfalls within the openings.
interesting and useful.......2003-11-01
This is an interesting book. It gives you the ideas of the openings, much more so than theory-laden books, and it is also quite small. The detail here is not great, but it's certainly an interesting book.
My problem is what is it useful for. I can only guess based on its physical size that you are intended to take it with you to tournaments to help review your games when they are over, but yet the detail of the game is not really sufficient, and nco or mco seem like they would be better suited for this task.
Great little "cheat sheet,"..........2002-03-24
This is almost a cheat sheet more than a book. Truly a "pocket guide"...you can actually fit this easily in your pocket, this book has all the biggie openings, clearly explained, with lots of diagrams. Obviously it's for beginner-intermediate players and doesn't go into great depth, but like Fine's Ideas Behind The Chess Openings, it tells you why each side is making the moves they are and how the attacks will proceed after the opening is played. Great to have at your elbow if you're playing a computer with its preprgrammed book and you need a hint. Or, if you're trying to learn the nuts and bolts of basic openings, the author has a helpful technique: after giving the basic moves, he asks "What is White trying to accomplish?" and "What is Black trying to accomplish?" Before getting into long variations, he gives you *verbal* discussions of what you can expect, i.e.: "White will attack the kingside with his king's bishop, king's knight and queen; on the queenside he'll advance his pawns and try to prevent Black's knight from establishing a post on c5." That sort of verbal overview makes the ensuing moves a lot clearer, and certainly make more sense than the typical "d4, Nc6, Bd3, a6, o-o, o-o, Bb5, Pxe5, Pxe5, and White is superior," that you see in so many books that profess to "teach" chess.
My only slight complaint is the book could be even a little longer. Some more modern openings could have been dealt with a little more thoroughly and the English--not a "modern" opening, is rather slighted. Another 30-40 pages wouldn't have made the book much less manageable and would have been very useful. My other reservation is the price: a bit high. Look for it used or overstock; by now there should be plenty of copies floating around.
Book Description
The Slav has been played by 11 of the first 13 World Champions, and has been favored by many stars of modern chess, including Anand, Kramnik, Shirov, Ivanchuk, and Morozevich. Its great popularity is due to its extreme solidity and abundant possibilities for dynamic counterplay. This book provides detailed coverage to help players as both White and Black face the challenges of this tough yet rewarding opening. All lines after 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 are discussed, except those that transpose to the Semi-Slav. The sharpest tactical lines of the Slav receive especially detailed coverage. These include the critical piece sacrifice in the main line (5...Bf5 6 Ne5 e6 7 f3 Bb4 8 e4 Bxe4), the Steiner line (5...Bg4) with 6 Ne5 Bh5 7 h3, and the possibly dubious, but highly dangerous Geller Gambit (5 e4), which was a favorite of the young Kasparov. The trendy ...a6 lines are also covered systematically for the first time in chess literature.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book.......2006-09-16
I read realitycheckmate's review and have to say that I completely disagree, after all, look at how many people who gave the book 5 stars? Burgess demonstrates easily that a player does not need to be a GM to write an informative, easy-to-read book that's bursting with new variations.
I've been playing the Slav when I was 1400 and now I'm 2100 and this book has been my best friend in those years (it's only been 4!).
This book provides detailed and easily-sufficient coverage (there are tonnes of alternatives to choose from) to help players as both White and Black (although I would recommend it more for the Black side) face the challenges of this tough yet rewarding opening. All lines after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 are discussed (except the Semi-Slav), which is excellent work considering how much analysis the author had to sift through (this book is definitely not a database dump). The sharpest tactical lines of the Slav like the piece sacrifice in 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 dxc4 5.a4 Bf5 6 Ne5 e6 7 f3 Bb4 8 e4 Bxe4.
Burgess is a highly versatile chess writer. I have NCO and The World's Greatest Chess Games and I have to admit that Burgess (though only a co-author) has done a great job on them as well.
reliable coverage of a fighting opening .......2006-03-23
I've noticed that the Slav defense is popular amongst many of the top young Russian players, which says a lot about the fighting qualities of this opening. I've been playing it for years.
As a sound, solid defense which you can still use to play for win with, you can't fault it really.
Burgess does a good job of presenting the material; useful variations and sensible commentary, with reliable and checked assessments, standard Gambit fare really.
I guess my main problem with the Slav is that it is no longer such a surprise weapon. I saw a review somewhere (Donaldson perhaps? His reviews are usully good value) that praised the new QGA repertoire book by Rizzitano. So I might test out that one just to keep opponents guessing.
OK for a reference book. Not a good first book on the Slav........2004-12-22
I been playing the Slav for a couple of years and have worked through Matthew Sadler's excellent book. I purchased this book to continue my studies. I find that it is not well laid out. Actually, if you are trying to learn to play the Slav, the introduction is the best part of the book. I have been able to pick through and study-up on the lines I try to play, but this is more of a reference book, not a text book on the Slav. If you are trying to learn the opening, buy Sadler's book. If you already know what you are doing and just want to go deeper into some variations, (notably the exchange variation and the ...a6 Slav) then you might get some use out of the book. Otherwise, your money is better spent elsewhere.
Explanations thin, layout hard to reference.......2004-01-26
.
There is too much grade inflation in these Amazon review ratings of chess books, with most getting the maximum 5 stars. 3 stars means average. What does this book have to earn being rated better than other opening books?: nothing.
The moves recommended in this book are fine. But any opening book would achieve that. To be above average, an opening book must explain the ideas and effects of every pre-middlegame move. Burgess' explanations are thin and minimal. Most other opening books have at least this much explanation, though frustratingly few make the effort to give more. Only a textless Informant would have sparser explanations.
Example 1: "5...Bf5!? 6 Qb3 Nxd5 may well be an interesting alternative, but there's no need for this"
Other examples include lines being assessed a simply "pleasant" or "unpleasant" for Black: gotta love that deep middlegame forethought.
Example 2: "b23) 8...e6 9 g4 (9 Qb3 should probably be preferred, even though 9... Nxe5 10 dxe5 Nd7 11 Qxb7 Rb8 12 Qxa6 Rxb2 looks satisfactory for Black)"
Example 3 (showing this book at its rare best, explanatory text writing about 4...a6 at the beginning of a chapter, -- means text bypassed): "This little move has several ideas. Most obviously, Black prepares ...b5, which grabs some space and also forces White to act on the queenside, which often stabilizes that part of the board, or else give Black counterplay. Black also prepares to develop his queen's bishop, since after ...a6 (and possibly ...b5), White's attack on b7 (by Qb3) has less sting. -- Also, by waiting for a move, Black makes it easier for him to determine where to put his queen's bishop: if White plays e3, then ...Bg4 -- One further point is that Black's idea of ...dxc4 is now slightly more of a threat --".
Another reviewer wrote this book gave him a good post-opening position against a GM, but that he proceeded to lose due to flawed middlegame moves. A good opening book discusses the relationship between its particular opening and the middlegame themes likely to arise. This book lacks such depth of discussion, and thus seems terribly average to me.
This book's layout makes it hard/time consuming to find a specific variation. Reading through long pages of text looking for section "f22)" or "b)223" is ridiculous. Scientists and accountants would do not present their data this way, for good reason. Tables of variations are the clearest way to index and organize variations. Plus there are numerous unnumbered variations in the textual analysis - good luck referencing those. Tables and text are not in conflict, they compliment each other.
There is a clunky Index of Variations in the back of the book. But it is incomplete at merely 1 sheet in size, and its layout is a tedious eyesore. It is a poor substitute for proper tables.
Opening books do best when they focus on playing just White or Black. When I am playing as Black in a given position, I do not need 6 moves to choose from, when 2-3 are clearly better than the other 3-4 alternatives. Covering 6 just adds noise when studying to play as Black, and takes space and depth from other discussions.
This book says nothing about the endgames likely to arise from the Slav. No full games are given, so no relationships between the opening and ending are traced or discussed. Nor does this book have any organization around the stable pawn structures likely to arise in the Slav.
A Good, Reliable Opening.......2003-12-03
I like this book. The material is pretty up-to-date. Of course, the Slav can get kind of boring if White is unambitious; therefore, some people avoid it as Black. Nevertheless, it is as solid a defense to 1.d4 as one can imagine. It's great to play against stronger opponents, or if you don't mind the drawishness of the Exchange variation.
The author is reliable and a credit to the good name of Gambit Books.

Zig Ziglar's Secrets of Closing the Sale
ASIN: 0764550632 |
Book Description
Without the close, there is no sale. Pretty obvious, right? Yet, for many salespeople, closing is the most baffling and elusive part of the selling process. All too often, salespeople meet qualified clients and charm them with an eloquent presentation, only to see the sale mysteriously slip from between their fingers in the end. Which is sad when you consider all the hard work – the prospecting, preparation, planning, and practice – done for the sake of a moment of truth that never arrives. Fortunately, closing is an art that can be mastered, and now Sales Closing For Dummies shows you how.
Packed with powerful principles that can help you become a top-producing salesperson, Sales Closing For Dummies is the ultimate guide to mastering that most mysterious part of the selling equation. Tom Hopkins, the legendary sales genius who, by age 30 was the nation’s leading real-estate trainer, demystifies closing and shows what it takes to be a champion closer, including how to:
- Lead a sale without being pushy
- Read the signs of an interested potential buyer
- Use questioning methods that close sales, time and again
- Help clients feel good about their buying decisions
- Keep your clients’ business and build their loyalty
- Build long-term relationships and watch your sales grow
With the help of dozens of real-life examples from a wide cross section of industries, Tom shows why professional selling is about communication, not coercion. And he shares his considerable insight and experience on:
- Verbal and visual buying cues and how to recognize them
- Choosing the best location for closing
- Addressing concerns and creating a sense of urgency
- Time-tested tactics and strategies for ending customer procrastination, overcoming their fear, closing from a distance, and more
- The ten biggest closing mistakes and how to avoid them
- Add-on selling and other ways of getting your clients to help you to build your business

not his best book.......2007-01-19
I was disappointed in the book. It's not Tom's best book by far. I found it very boring. Using examples that I just could not relate in my sales career.
ABC ALWAYS BE CLOSING!.......2003-10-26
I've been in Real Estate sales for just over a year. This is my first "sales" job so I was looking for something to help me with my closing skills. After reading the first 10 chapters of this book, I picked up several techniques and ideas from Tom's strategies that helped me. They helped me so much in fact, that I got two listings in one week! The commission on those two listings totaled $20,610! If I could recommend any sales book for a beginning sales person, or an experienced sales person that just needs some new ideas, this would be it!!!
A must-have for anyone in sales!.......2002-12-06
I found this book to be very helpful. My close ratio has increased by 150%! But most importantly, now that I have this knowledge I can finally afford a pool table for my basement and daily veterinarian appointments for my cat!
Tom is the Master Closer.......2000-11-01
I've been involved in sales for over fifteen years and I have yet to see another speaker/author come this close to perfecting and teaching the sales process. There are many other fine teachers, but Tom Hopkins seems to be the easiest to understand and the easiest to follow - even for the newest of my salespeople. And since he applies his disciplines to all industries, this may be the only sales guide you need - what a way to clean up that library! Truly a fine compilation of the best sales closings and how to use them.
