Diaspora and Visual Culture marks the increasing importance of diaspora as a means of understanding the new modes of postnational identity. In examining the visual culture of the "classic" African and Jewish diasporas, contributors address different aspects of the multiple viewpoints inherent in diasporic cultures. Two key introductory essays by Stuart Hall and the painter R.B. Kitaj highlight the intersections of diaspora and cultural identity. The subsequent pieces examine individual instances of diaspora as diverse as homosexuality in the Dreyfus Affair, the Caribbean-Jewish Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, Yoruba diaspora art and performance in Brazil and New York, identity in the art of African-American women in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the formation of American, European and Israeli artistic identity and the possibility that queer culture is diasporic.

Super-fun postcards! I sent them to my daughters (9 and 13) at camp and they loved them. Really sharp and dramatic graphics - exactly what to send to someone who's probably not all that interested in your message, but likes to get something cool in the mail.

This is an absolutely wonderful postcard book! The images are all large and vibrant, and the printing quality is superb. I usually have a lot of trouble finding postcards to send to friends and relatives, but these are all a lot of fun and everyone I've sent them to thinks they're great. I even took out the two that I liked best and framed them to put on my wall.

I came to buy a second book for a friend (I've had my copy for a month), and saw the review by Publisher's Weekly. Just because the Onion claims to be the new National Lampoon doesn't make it so. They are great at paroding the news but the lampoon has done sooooo much more. As far as un-PC goes it doesn't get any better than this. Very funny!

200+ pages of the very best of National Lampoon, the magazine teenage boys had to use to see naked chicks before the internet was invented.
Quality stuff by P.J. O'Rourke, John Hughes, Doug Kenney, and the other NL alumni. Holds up well, and there's a smattering of new material that ranks right up there. The biggest surprise is a piece by William S. Burroughs (!)
Can't wait for the next "Big Book"

Very original. Something for everyone........2000-08-09

Hated Heaven is filmmaker Kenny Kemp's first novel. While reading it I frequently thought it would make a great movie, and it probably will be made into one before too long. Although the subject matter bears a surface similarity to the Robin Williams film "What Dreams May Come," this novel presents a very different vision of the afterlife, and tells a very different story.

Tom, the book's protagonist, is a devoted Christian married to April, an essentially agnostic nonbeliever. They have a surprisingly good marriage, however, and when Tom suddenly succumbs to cancer April begs him to promise to come back and tell her if there really is an afterlife.

Tom soon finds out there is an afterlife, but it's nothing like he could have imagined. Tom finds himself not in Heaven, as he had expected, but in Paradise, apparently an immense bureaucracy which people must pass through before moving on. Much of the novel depicts Tom's experiences as he learns what Paradise is really like. Unfortunately, the more he sees, the less he likes it. Tom desperately desires to make a quick return visit to his wife to fulfill his promise to her, and hopefully turn her into a believer, but he's constantly thwarted by obstacles such as impassable committees, serpentine regulations, and request forms which run for hundreds of pages.

I Hated Heaven is a devious little book in that it should be loved by most non-religious people, because of the way it satirizes religious beliefs, and it should be loved by most religious people because of the way it affirms those beliefs. Really, the book is very pro-religion and pro-Christian, but non-religious readers will find it enjoyable as well, as it is, more than anything, very pro-people.

I thought this was a very fresh book.I like the way Kemp writes.I thought Tom was a true trooper, he was not going to stop until he kept his promise The ending totally took me for a loop.I actually cried,I am very excited about the sequel.This is a must read book.

A completely different view of life and love after death........1999-05-06

Would it be heaven if the person you truly loved wasn't there? Kenny Kemp's view of the afterlife and true love makes you question the idea of harps and halos. This fantasy love story is for anyone who wants his or her love to last beyond death, and to overcome all barriers--even God's. His characters seem like people you've met before and yet their decisions may surprise you. Definitely worth turning off the TV to read!

This book is an excellent read. The characters are well developed and believeable. The author's look at heaven vs. the norm is interesting and humorous. Lots of great imagery and imagination involved. Can't wait for a sequel!

Some of the articles I was able to read quite easily, however, I had difficulty with most of the articles from British/European authors -- their theoretical background, if I'm not mistaken, seems to be in the Freudian/depth psychology area, or at least, schools of psychology with which I am not familiar -- my theoretical knowledge of psychology lies more in the various schools of psychology from the US.

This novel, published in 1937, is written in the form of a diary covering 12 days in the life of an overworked prosecutor employed by the government in the Egyptian countryside. It was based partly on the firsthand experience of al-Hakim (1898-1987), a Westernized liberal intellectual who's best-known as the father of the modern Arab theater.

During the course of the novel, the prosecutor investigates but fails to solve various crimes in one village: a murder by shooting, a murder by poisoning, and a murder by strangling. Meanwhile, he muses on the many obstacles he faces---a ridiculous caseload, departmental checklists governing procedure that ignore the chaotic reality of his job, the ignorance and dissimulation of the peasants, who live like cattle, a legal system imported from abroad that protects creditors and the government rather than the people, and the lack of dedication of the civil servants around him, who are interested mainly in protecting their jobs with each shift of the political wind. ("Fancy me the Refuge of Justice! Where was Justice! I don't know it and have never set eyes on it, since nobody has shown it to me . . . . 'justice' and 'the people' are words whose significance is still unknown in this country. They are just phrases whose only purpose is to be written on paper and delivered in orations . . . ."). The social criticism isn't directed only at the village, because "the village is, after all, the state in miniature."

Most of all I enjoyed several of the humorous set-pieces in the novel, such as the description of a trial, the questioning of a dying suspect, and the search for a body in the cemetery, for the blackness of their humor. Some of the scenes in the novel recalled Gogol's descriptions of ignorance and futility in the 19th-century Russian countryside, though without, in my opinion, matching Gogol's vivid characters, colorful narration or blend of reality and fantasy. One scene recalled a short story by Chekhov about a peasant on trial for stealing nails from a railway line.

Remarkably, this English translation was produced in the 1940s by the Israeli diplomat and politician Abba Eban.
