Book Description

Beginning in the fifth millennium BC, the land that is

now Egypt nurtured an extraordinary pioneering civilization whose art and architecture have never lost their power to amaze. This magnificent picture book presents a carefully chosen sequence of masterpieces ranging in date from c.4000 BC to c.200 AD, when Egypt was a province of the Roman Empire. All media are represented, from monumental architecture to exquisite jewellery and personal ornaments.

At any scale, Egyptian art has an immediate appeal for its beauty and consummate craftsmanship, and the works illustrated in this book can all be enjoyed for their aesthetic qualities alone. But they are also products of a culture very different from ours, and in his concise introduction Jaromir Malek provides the essential background for understanding why Egyptian art and architecture took the forms they did. The explanations continue in the informative captions to each illustration, and the chronological chart, map, bibliography and index provide quick reference.

Embracing architecture, painting, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork and jewellery, the illustrations

in Egypt: 4000 Years of Art are all masterpieces that can be enjoyed in their own right. Presented in strict chronological order, they also form a succinct and easily digestible history of the subject that will be a valuable resource for students and teachers. For all readers this book will provide a fresh, beautiful and accessible introduction to some of the most remarkable art ever produced.

Hats can revitalize an old outfit or help pull together a new one. Building on the basics of the beret, visor cap, pillbox, and turban, Hats packs numerous ideas for colorful, quirky headwear into a slim page count. Most of the necessary supplies will be on hand in the standard sewing room, and since minimal fabric is needed, hat making offers the chance to utilize that spectacular fabric too expensive for clothing yardage. Embellishment instructions include hatbands, various fabric flowers, prairie points, piping, and tassels. As a nice plus, bound into the back of the book is a tear-out section with full-size patterns for all the basic hat types covered.

A Heady Affair will delight quilters and folks who fall in love with a fabric and aren't quite sure what to do with it. This is a descriptive, rather than prescriptive book. That is, it will tell you how to do things in general, but not how to copy a specific hat. You can copy the shape, but the rest is up to you. A pull-out sheet of basic hat pattern pieces lets you make hats, turbans, caps, hats with brims, and pillboxes. If you want a book that says how to embellish store-bought hats, this is not the one. The instructions are complete. For each hat shape, you get a list of how much fabric, lining and interfacing are required. Nothing in the book takes more than 3/4 yard. What a great way to use up bits and pieces!

Of the hats books I have read, this is the first from which I did not get a single good idea.

Book Description

This breakout book by Alison Bechdel takes its place alongside the unnerving, memorable, darkly funny family memoirs of Augusten Burroughs and Mary Karr. It's a father-daughter tale pitch-perfectly illustrated with Bechdel's sweetly gothic drawings andlike Marjane Satrapi's Persepolisa story exhilaratingly suited to the graphic memoir form. Meet Alison's father, a historic preservation expert and obsessive restorer of the family's Victorian house, a third-generation funeral home director, a high school English teacher, an icily distant parent, and a closeted homosexual who, as it turns out, is involved with male students and a family babysitter. Through narrative that is alternately heartbreaking and fiercely funny, we are drawn into a daughter's complex yearning for her father. And yet, apart from assigned stints dusting caskets at the family-owned "fun home," as Alison and her brothers call it, the relationship achieves its most intimate expression through the shared code of books. When Alison comes out as homosexual herself in late adolescence, the denouement is swift . . . graphic . . . and redemptive.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Epic Journey Toward Honesty.......2007-10-01

When your father is an exacting home renovator, meticulous interior decorator, local mortician, high shcool English teacher, and closeted homosexual, who you suspect likely had sexual relations with adolescent boys - if you're like most autobiopic authors these days, then you'd probably write your own private hyperbolic "Running With Scissors," throwing everything up against the wall, and crudely splattering your immediate family's history across the pages of your tunnel-visioned, self-promoting, and sensational memoir. But Alison Bechdel is neither an ordinary author nor a poorly educated one. She has both an independently crafted intellect and a capable library of classic literary sources and themes. She does not choose to focus on minutia or overly far-reaching causalities. Her first autobiography is a corncopia of expertly-coordinated art forms, carved into a concise, gravitational, and enlightening narrative.

I highly recommend not only buying and reading this book, but I also encourage studying Bechdel's perspectives, reasoning connections, and causal theories.

This book is a modern heroic quest to find meanings, understandings, and truths in intimate behaviors, wants, and relationships.

Many authors focus on picturesquely and emotionally describing the abnormalities of their past. Bechdel is fully capable of parroting those common abilities. But her aims are further reaching and more well-intended than simply trying for accurate multi-sensory recollection. She goes happily beyond and effectively reveals the origins of some of her creative forces. She sympathetically and honestly portrays the cultural, familial, and private paradoxes that likely disabled so many of her (and our) loved ones who are not ordinary in their desires.

Anyone who incorrectly thinks women can't be visually-centric need only read this book. Bechdel's visual memory is both astounding and rewarding for the rest of us. And her other areas of memory, from smells to feelings to current events to literary quotes in her educational development are indicative of an artist who tries to consider, evaluate, and remember more than most people do. She does not filter her memories through rose colored glasses, but she does effectively step outside status quo lenses to make her own evaluations and portrayals.

Reading some of the recent popular homosexual memoirs, a person might think homosexuals are NOT predominantly driven by love or desire, but rather driven by poor experiences, revenge, whistleblowing, or hatred. Where most authors blame their family and past relationships for their own problems, Bechdel does not. She sees more perspectives and she is better educated than most. Bechdel chooses to not simply blame others for her past OCD, inabilities, and abnormalities, even while she illustrates capably the environment in which those conditions arose.

The title "Fun Home" probably has many intended meanings, like Jeannette Wells memoir entitled "The Glass Castle" has many transparent meanings. Both memoirs speak of fun times, but I think Bechdel sees even more of the good intentions in her father's "mad" pursuits than Wells perceived. Both fathers showed flashes of brilliance mixed with Achilles Heels so notorious, it's a wonder they could walk at all sometimes. And in Wells' defense, at least Bechdel's father was better read and less often intoxicated.

The title "Fun Home" is not singularly intended with negative or sarcastic connotations. Alison Bechdel shows us how she had fun growing up, as much fun as a person could have dealing with the ever present spoken and unspoken, addressed and unaddressed familial conflicts constantly battling in her home.

I think it would be insufficent to call this a young woman's "coming of age" book. It may be more accurate to say this book is about a family coming of age. And I think the publication of this beautiful story is an assertive exercise in encouraging societal sensibilities to come of age.

Bechdel does not seek to excuse all of her father's behaviors, but rather to help others understand them. She wants more people to understand what can happen to very intelligent and talented people when they are incorrectly trained to believe that some of their primary drives and loves are sinful, shameful, or should be killed or hidden. She writes:

"I suppose a lifetime spent hiding one's erotic truth could have a cummulative renunciatory effect. Sexual shame is in itself a kind of death. Ulysses, of course, was banned for many years by people who found its honesty obscene."

I felt pretty good that I was able to not cry while reading the book. But after I read the last page, the tears just flowed.

5 out of 5 stars a new genre.......2007-09-26

I didn't know that graphic novels could be so smart. I felt smarter after reading this one, and also very moved by a sad story. This book doesn't have good guys and bad guys, which is how you know it's not a typical comic.

In addition to a great tale, the art is so beautiful. What a tremendous book.

5 out of 5 stars Achingly True and Elegant.......2007-08-25

This memoir could have been called "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" but that title is taken. Nevertheless, that is the most apt description for Fun Home that I can think of. Alison Bechdel's spare prose and simple, black-and-white line drawings convey an emotional complexity that will push buttons for many, if not all, readers because in one way or another most of us suffered childhoods that tested our abilities to make sense of the senseless.

My own childhood was nothing like Bechdel's, yet at the same time it was exactly like hers. All of the details are different, while all of the feelings are the same. I would say that at the heart of Fun Home lies Bechdel's need to justify to herself the love she felt (and continues to feel) for a father who was too wrapped up in his own identity conflicts to even acknowledge, much less help address, his child's. And who was too weak even to live out his full two score and seven, taking his life sometime in his 40s when Bechdel was just out of college.

Bechdel's contempt for her father is apparent, as is her love. She is at once angry and admiring, cynical about his motives and proud of his accomplishments. Her ambivalence is nearly overwhelming, and something that I suspect many of us share in relation to our parents. In the end, I believe, the lucky ones among us come to some inner accommodation wherein we are able to forgive our parents for their lapses, even those that are quite literally sinful, and honor the things they were able to do that live on in our hearts and minds after they are gone.

Fun Home is a beautiful book whose drawings aid the reader's imagination in fleshing out details of an early life that was deeply felt and well lived. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Just amazing........2007-08-22

I just want to say, I had never read Alison Bechdel before I read a review of this book in Bitch Magazine. I picked it up and am now a huge fan of hers. This book is incredibly well thought-out and I think that many people will see their own story reflected in hers in that, as a child (as a human for that matter), you see your parents as end-all, be-all, endlessly fascinating human beings...almost as if they were Adam and Eve...It's such a strange paradox in that they existed for a long time before you did, they they do or don't take care of you, that no matter what the status, everyone has parents...you pore over seeminly innocuous details of their lives searching for some "truth", you compare them favorably and unfavorably to other people's parents...you put together pieces of the puzzle for yourself where there is no information...but at the end of the day, they are just people who make mistakes, no more, no less. This story is mainly about a daughter's fascination with her father and his life/secrets, an attempt to get to the root of a completely tragic experience and a reconciliation with herself and her own grief and (misplaced) guilt.

I met Alison at the NYC Comic Con and she was pretty fascinating herself. This book has been a obvious victory for her as well as a labor of love and a harrowing journey. Once I finished this book, I bought the DTWOF books and was bowled over. It's a twenty year long soap opera with aging characters, intricate story lines, whip-smart commentary on social, governmental and civil rights issues, and funny too boot.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant...and sad.......2007-08-07

This was one of the most engaging and crushingly sad books I've ever read. Most authors are unable to write about agonizing personal history without being mawkish or manipulative. But Bechdel tells a raw and gripping story with not a hint of cheap sentimentality.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a book full of great advice.......2006-11-03

i read this entire book from cover to cover and I found it to be not only hilarious, but extremely helpful, as it covers basic etiquette concerning weddings that maybe not everyone is already aware of. i guess the main thing is that it basically illustrates how doing little "harmless" things that an ignorant or just plain naive person would do (i.e. putting wedding registry info along with an invitation, "forgetting" to give thank-you notes) could result in people getting really offended and/or hurt. the examples (true stories!) are quite interesting and funny to read, and make you realize how you really don't want to become one of those bridezillas! This is probably the book equivalent to that show on WE (can't remember the name) featuring "bridezillas" going nutso during their wedding planning. The thing is, once you see how ugly and nasty people like that can become, you'll want to do everything in your power not to turn into one of them. :)

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for MOBs.......2006-08-25

As a recent MOB I found Jeanne Hamilton's book an indispensible guide to navigating the complicated maze that wedding planning and etiquette has become. Using razor-sharp wit, humor, and old fasioned common sense, Hamilton takes us by the hand and leads us to the promised land of "wedding prep bliss." This book should be the first purchase in the MOB's bridal budget.

1 out of 5 stars Miss Manners would be horrified.......2006-07-30

This is not a guide, it's a collection of wedding horror stories other people have submitted to the author's website. You can read those stories for free.

The author's attempt at wit falls far short of the mark...she comes across as a mean-spirited boor. For real wedding advice, pick up Peggy Post's updated edition of Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette instead.

5 out of 5 stars A must read! Very funny and helps put things into perspective.......2005-09-26

I bought this book because I wanted a light hearted read to give me a break from all the chaos in planning. It was an easy read yet funny and somewhat informative. I LOVED it and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in etiquette yet not consumed by it. It cleared up a few questions that I had as well as gave me a lot of good ideas on what NOT to do and most of all laughs. There were also a few OMGs because I couldn't not believe the ridiculousness of some people/brides.
All in all a definite for any new bride.

5 out of 5 stars All brides must buy this book.......2005-08-21

I am a devotee of Miss Jeanne's website, so this book was exactly what I thought it would be. I am not a bride-to-be, but I have seen enough wedding disasters a bridezillas to know that this book must be read by anyone who will in any way be involved in a wedding. Miss Jeanne's inclusion of actual stories submitted to her as examples of what not to do, and her framing the chapters with the fictitious bride and bridal consultant is excellent organization and writing of this book. This book is not going to teach you what colors to choose or what flowers would look best, but it will deal with the important things, such as not looking or acting like a greedy bride and groom and when to ignore your mother for the sake of true taste and etiquette.

Not everyone liked this movie, although I thought it was a step up on Aliens 3.

The book is full of great color pictures, especially of the monsters themselves - ideal for model makers or anyone like me who is occasionally frustrated that I don't get a better look at the aliens during the movie.

Better than most "the making of the movie" type of books, I'd recommend to all monster movie fans, especially those of the Alien movies.

A bit lightweight on the secrets and techniques being discussed, cinefex this ain't.There's lots of great colour pictures help this book feel like good value for money. The pictures of alternative Newborn designs are of particular interest as they are far superior to the white 'muppet' that appeared in the movie. The emphasis is firmly on the pictures rather than text descriptions of hwo the special effects were made and detailed discussions with the creators. It'd be a great book if it was as detailed as say 'alien the special effects'.

If you liked the movie "ALIEN: RESURRECTION" you have to buy this book!!! It'll make you see how much great work and effort was necessary to make Ripley's return possible! Here is a book that explores the fascinating interconnections between three seemingly unrelated topics. The reader need have no specialist mathematical background to follow the text beyond high school mathematics, which makes it suitable for budding magicians and students of all ages. It is a fun book that looks at the mathematics of the perfect shuffle and develops the procedures for controlling dynamic memories and doing some clever card tricks. Each chapter begins with the description of a card trick and ends with its explanation, usually using some mathematics developed earlier. The book itself is designed as a prop for a trick, but you don’t need to use mathematics or even understand it to do some ‘magic’.

5 out of 5 stars Serious mathematics when shuffling cards.......2000-06-15

I accidentaly discussed the perfect shuffling problem with one of my high-school talented student recently. We found this problem very interesting, and involved many deep thoughts in mathematics. After many times of discussions my student wrote a exercise paper about the order of shuffling . So I'm very glad to found a book totally dedicated to this small mathematical gem. This book approaches the complete shuffling in many ways: first in number theory, then groups, then linear and abstract algebra and computer dimamics .Via these chapters readers will find this problem is much more deep than he had thought. Although there are many "hard" mathematics in this book, we still havesome "soft" chapters dealing with magic tricks (and it's really fun! ). This is a very good introducing book indeed, it covers recreation mathematics and serious mathematics. However, in my opinion, the pace of this book seems a bit too fast, for a non-math-major reader, those formulas look very formidable! ) It could explore those formulas in detail, and it should have contained some related topics: for example, the prime root in number theory, the combinatorics facet, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Secrets of the card tricksters explained and applied.......2000-03-27

Written by a distinguished author, the only person to obtain a Ph. D. in card shuffling, this book is a demonstration of deterministic amazement. Which is what card tricks really are. Enclosed in a wrapper of disingenuous talk and distracting motions, a card trick is a simple exercise in movement and memory. The process driving the movement is a mathematical one and many tricks are thoroughly explained here. Although the mathematics of card shuffling is surprisingly complex, it is not impossibly so and can be understood by advanced undergraduates. With many tricks explained in detail, as even the commentary is included, aspiring magicians will also find items of interest.
Certainly one of the most interesting and recreational mathematics books published in some time, this book is almost all pure fun. It even includes some tricks within the text that you will not learn about until the end.

This brief, thorough, and engaging introduction to qualitative research design has no equal. Maxwell avoids the superficial and confused paradigm discussions that so many qualitative authors engage in. He takes a pragmatic and rigorous approach that builds on the potential strengths of qualitative research while promoting well-accepted principles of scientific validity and integrity.

The chapter on validity is especially noteworthy, recognizing that "Validity is a goal not a product; it is never something that can be proven or taken for granted" and that "Validity is also relative: It has to be assessed in relationship to the purposes and circumstances of the research, rather than being a context-independent property of methods or conclusions. Finally validity threats are made implausible by evidence not methods; methods are only a way of getting evidence that can help you rule out these threats." Amen.

This is the best book I have found that describes, in simple easy to read language, how to design qualitative research. I enjoyed reading it. The exercises included throughout the book facilitated my learning. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Maxwell provides roadmap.......2001-01-28

Having acquired a veritable library of qualitative methods books and journal articles, I still felt like I was floundering. This book gave me not only a new and more valuable way of thinking about what I was doing, but a step-by-step action guide, practical, practicable, and with a depth (both explicated and in specific references) that makes me much more confident about eventual orals. Short and extremely sweet!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!.......2001-01-11

I and several of my compatriots found this text to be a practical island in an overwhelming and contradictory sea of theory. It's short, eminently readable, and especially useful for those struggling to write a qualitative dissertation proposal. Maxwell's liberating revision of the usual ponderous "lit review" to the actually applicable "research context" is in itself worth the purchase price.
