5 out of 5 stars SO good!.......2006-07-04

This book is SO GOOD! I've had it for about five years, but every time I take it off the shelf I learn something new. Highly recommended for any Orisa devotee, a follower of African traditional religions, or anyone interested in the African diaspora. It would be a great gift even to the illiterate, as the photographs are amazing. I think this book sold for about $500 originally, and even at that cost it would have been worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars A Stellar Publication of Relgious Art from African Diaspora.......1997-03-18

This book, the companion piece to the exhibition of the same name, is a blessing. Thompson, professor & head of the department of African Art at Yale, directed this incredible exhibition in 1993 at NYC's Museum of African Art. From Ifa in Nigeria, to Santeria in Puerto Rico, to Obeah in Jamaica, to Vodun in Haiti, he and his companion scholars and curators have contributed in a healing circle across the Middle Passage. Shattering damaging, racist mythologies of these religions, _Face of the Gods_ fosters an understanding for these misunderstood religions while maintaining a respectful distance. Complete with analyses, interviews, and color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Don Rosa story & funny Carl Barks.......2006-06-01

In this issue you'll find a whole 28 pages long Don Rosa story about the Crusader Kings, 14 pages of Daniel Branca/Wanda Gattino goodness, and an enjoyable Barks story stretching over the final 20 pages.

The front cover is drawn by Daniel Branca and coloured by Susan Daigle-Leach.

    ---

Uncle Scrooge, "The Crown of the Crusader Kings"
    Story & art: Don Rosa
    Colour: Egmont & Susan Daigle-Leach
    Lettering: Todd Klein

This story contains a lot of similarities to Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code, or vice versa, actually. Don Rosa's story was finished in 2001, so a couple of years before Dan Brown's bestseller was released.

The tale starts with Scrooge sobbing over the loss of his greatest treasures, like the Philosopher's Stone and the Crown of Genghis Khan. One of Donald's nephews suggests that they start searching for Khan's crown's western counterpart: "The ceremonial crown that the kings of Europe tried to send to the great Khan to symbolize their alligiance!" The nephew goes on telling that Colombus was supposed to deliver the crown, but that since America "got in his way", it never came to that. And since the crown was never returned to Spain, it must be somewhere in the west.

The hunt for Colombus' lost log books starts, and as they follow the footsteps of the Knight Templars (the first bankers), Scrooge, Donald and the nephews get in various trouble, for instance with a Haitian Voodoo tribe. This sets for a voodoo doll scene I found pretty amusing. This story also has its villains: The international money council consisting of Monsieur Molay and Maurice Mattressface. They are both very interested in finding the very same crown that Scrooge & co is after.

The story is, as mentioned, 28 pages long, and is packed with lovely Don Rosa details in every panel. Typically Don Rosa there are also a few references to old Carl Barks adventures, for instance where Scrooge is chased by Bombie the Zombie (Gladstone Comics no. 16). It's filled with action and humour, and the episode is a satisfying addendum to Don Rosa's collective work.

I should mention that this story's sequal, The Old Castle's Other Secret or A Letter from Home is printed in Uncle Scrooge #342, so check that one out as well.

Uncle Scrooge, "In Quest of the Green Hope"
Story: Daniel Branca & Wanda Gattino
    Dialogue: David Gerstein
    Art: Daniel Branca
    Colour: Egmont & Scott Rockwell
    Lettering: Willie Schubert

This is a telling about Scrooge, Donald and the nephews and their hunt for The Green Hope. The Green Hope was the ship that brought Duckburg's founder, Cornelius Coot, to the city's site. Shortly after Cornelius got off, the ship got shipwrecked in a storm, and nobody had seen it ever since. Each year since the city arranged a "Green Hope search week", and the finder of the ship gets to keep its fabled treasures. This is enough to make Scrooge start dreaming, and after a little research in books from Scrooge's library, the hunt can begin. However, most Scrooge fairy-tales are far from straight on easy. It turns out an old Nemesis of Scrooge is also interested in finding Green Hope and its long lost treasure.

"In Quest of the Green Hope" could remind you of the good old Carl Barks stories, featuring Scrooge, Donald and his nephews adventuring and hunting for lost treasures (albeit I prefer the more exotic locations Barks often used).

Uncle Scrooge, "The Great Wig Mystery"
    Story & art: Carl Barks
    (US #52, Sept 1964)
    Colour: Dummer Hinton

Here's a classic Carl Barks story, not published in a comic book since 1978.

Wigs is the new fashion in Duckburg, the bigger, the better. Everybody loves wigs, all the girls wear wigs, and one person earns fat money on their desire for wigs: Scrooge McDuck. He flies them in from Europe, but one time a wig covers his eyes during landing, and he crashes on the runway. A slick fast-talker named Scalpnick pretends Scrooge crashed his plane onto him, and therefore he sues the poor old interminabillionaire. Donald, the only witness to the crash landing, is hired by the same Mr. Scalpnick to fly to a country called Wiggie Ziggie, but is doesn't seem to exist a country by that name. Evidently Donald's flying job is just a trick from Scalpnick to get him away from the upcoming trial.

Carl Barks presents us this witty and amusing story with great drawings and a large amount of thrills and humour. I hadn't read this story before when I bought the comic, and it certainly was 20 pages of swell reading which gave me a large portion of giggling.

    ---

If you get this magazine, I believe you'll be greatly entertained by the long Don Rosa story as well as the nostalgic Carl Barks telling, so this comic book is well recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Don Rosa wins again........2005-04-07

This beeing a story I hadn't read and Don Rosa beeing my favorit Duck writer, I thought this would be a grate buy since I live in Iceland and his stories are hard to come by here.
And how right I was. This issue contains "the crown of the crussaid king" and two other stories (not by Don Rosa) in fine artwork and print, much better than the normal comic issues i'm used to where I come from.:o)

So if you are a Rosa fan this is a good purchase.

    Book Description

What do you get when a Seinfeld writer marries an OB/GYN? A doctor with a funny delivery. Actually, lots of funny deliveries. Marc Jaffe's job was coming up with hysterical stories for Seinfeld, but nothing was funnier than the stories his gynecologist wife would tell. So, he decided to write this laugh-a-page book about life married to an Ob/gyn. It includes all the crazy stories his wife tells about: * Flying Placentas * Sex toy parties * Immaculate conceptions * Intimate tattoos * Ridiculous 4:00 am phone calls...and more comical incidents of gynecologic and obstetric intrigue. While sleeping with your gynecologist would be wrong, reading Sleeping With Your Gynecologist is very right.

2 out of 5 stars Gotta disagree with the rave reviews.......2001-01-31

I was really, really disappointed in this book, especially after reading the raves from both celebrities and other readers. I thought, first of all, there were only about 20 pages of funny stories, and the rest was observational humor about how long we all get kept waiting at the doctor's office, etc. Maybe because Jaffe is used to writing for comedians/shows, his stuff would work really well if delivered in a droll voice, but when you write a book, you really need to have something to say that is fresh and interesting. I just didn't find that here.

The stories were amusing, but I've read one or two of them before, actually (in books by ER doctors). And even the stories didn't have me laughing out loud, as they did the other readers. I LOVE this kind of humor; I've got a huge collection of humor AND true-life medical books. But this left me wishing I'd browsed through it in a bookstore. I definitely wouldn't have spent the money on it.

If you like books by stand-up comedians (SeinLanguage, Ellen deGeneres, Paul Reiser, etc), then this is for you. But even just for light reading, it wasn't for me.

5 out of 5 stars I'm ordering copies for my friends so they won't take mine!.......2000-12-20

How many times do you read something that actually makes you laugh out loud? I found myself reading passage after passage to my husband, who was initially squeamish about the subject matter. He asked me if he could read it when I was done! If you knew him, you'd know that this is a very special book!

5 out of 5 stars I'll prescribe it for my patients.......2000-07-12

I've often wondered if our patients have any clue what it's like being an OB/GYN. If they don't then this very funny book will give them some insight into the craziness. It had my husband and I in tears, we were laughing so hard. The middle of the night phone calls were my favorite. That could be a book in itself. All OB/GYNs should get this book and when you're done laughing, put it in your waiting room, or get one for each exam room, then your patients won't mind when you are running behind.

4 out of 5 stars A hilarious book that was hard to put down.......2000-05-09

A must read for any male or female who wants to know what other women go through behing those secret doors! Many times I was laughing so hard tears rolled down my face. Some of the gynocological secrets (bacon) were too funny. I have reccomended this book to all my (mostly female) friends.

    5 out of 5 stars It's like The Onion's Finest Reporting, only it's TRUE!.......2000-05-03

I have to confess, I was at first skeptical that any guy could be insightful about a woman's body (whose fault is that, by the way?) but Jaffe proved that we've been looking at this all wrong, all along. This is the funniest book I've read since Dave Barry Turned 40, and the funniest anything I've read in years. I think my favorite part was the section on true plot ideas for "Movie of the Week" -- like "Either Way It's A Smith," when a woman gives birth to a boy who looks just like her husband, Tom, which is a good thing because no one will notice how much the baby really looks like Tom's father!

I wish I could read more of Jaffe. What newspapers out there carry his column?

    Book Description

This masterfully written collection of short essays by the acknowledged Western expert on Japanese culture and film spans thirty years and ranges broadly over subjects as diverse as the Noh theater, fashion, television, Tokyo Disneyland, language, the kiss, and, of course, film. Richie's twenty-eight essays present cross-sections of Japan's enormous creative accomplishments during the nation's rise to economic and cultural power.

5 out of 5 stars Good compilation of stories.......2007-04-03

Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (2/07)

This is an excellent collection of short essays that share Japan's culture and bits of Donald Richie with the reader. I've always enjoyed Japanese Gardens and immediately delved into the essays on that topic. "You must truly observe. Go to the garden and look at the rock, the tree. Ah, nature, you say and turn - then stop. You have just observed that rock and tree have been placed there, by the hand of man, the Japanese hand. A new thought occurs: Nature does not happen; it is wrought. A new rule offers itself: Nothing is natural until it has been so created." "The garden is not natural until everything in it has been shifted. And flowers are not natural either until so arranged to be. God, man, earth--these are the traditional strata in the flower arrangement, but it is man that is operative, acting as the medium through which earth and heaven meet."

Richie thoroughly discusses hand gestures. The meaning of a hand gesture in one country may not be the meaning of it in another country. We all use gestures when we speak but we don't necessarily interpret the gestures of another culture correctly. A smile in Japan may not necessarily mean happiness.

In Japan if you see a person wearing a shirt that says Cocoa Cola it means he loves that drink. The person with a university shirt on wants to attend that university. The person wearing Army Surplus is not making a statement. In the US wearing these same items would be "expressing an ironic scorn for the qualities they presumably inculcated. Wearing surplus U.S. army gear meant you were anti-Vietnam-War and hence anti Army."

If you are interested in the cultural and arts in Japan you will find this book fascinating. Some of the essays seem to have a little age on them. Richie admits, "What was true up to 1962 is not necessarily true up to 1989. Japan is fast changing, and some of the things one thought most Japanese are no longer apparent." I believe this book speaks much of who Richie is. Richie is the "acknowledged Western expert on Japan." I highly recommend "A Lateral View" to those interested in Japan and other cultures.

4 out of 5 stars A new perspective on Japan........2003-02-23

This is a good collection of short essays under the umbrella term `Japan`, but divided into handy categories such as Cinema, Tokyo and Popular culture. As the title suggests, these are often from a `lateral` viewpoint. The author doesn`t just tell you that the average family home is small and (relatively) uncomfortable to live in, he theorizes on the reason why this is, in this case (apart from the obvious space constraints in urban Japan) Richie argues that traditionally, the man of the house has many different `homes`, the office, the bar, the apartment etc and therefore doesn`t place so much importance on the Western concept of 'home'. The book does shed light on a lot of questions that those who live in Japan, or even those who just visit, may be wondering about. Such as, why do most Japanese TV news shows have an anchorman who is invariably supported by a `yes-woman`, and why do `yes-people` appear in small boxes at the top corner of the screen nodding to indicate agreement when agreement is needed and vice-versa. The only drawback to this collection is that some of the essays are old, with the latest being written in about 1989, so you`re not going to get any post-bubble commentary and the essays on `popular-culture` may be a little redundant now. There is also an essay written in the 1970`s on the problems of putting Japanese script onto paper with a typewriter and wondering what the future holds with the possibilities of the personal computer. However, the rest is a wonderful introduction to thinking about Japan differently, and while sometimes a little critical, shows a true love for the place.

    5 out of 5 stars Lucid, precise, irreverent---this is a must-read!.......2000-10-28

Anyone interested in Japan, the arts, cultural criticism or the art of the essay should read this book. Donald Richie is the preeminent Japan scholar of our time, beloved in Japan and honored in the rest of the world. Time Magazine has called him "the dean of arts critics in Japan."

But forget the cliche of Japanese temples and cherry blossoms... Richie isn't one of those old-fashioned Western Japanophiles nostalgic for some ancient version of "the Far East." He's interested in Japan here & now. Better yet, he's a fabulous writer--lucid, precise, irreverent, and never jaded.

These essays are a great way to "get to know" Donald Richie--you get his essays on everything from Tokyo Disneyland to traditional Noh theatre, from contemporary Japanese film to tattoos. My personal favorite is the disturbing but amazing essay on Japanese "eroduction."

And if you're a film buff, Richie is also the man who introduced modern Japanese film--Kurosawa, Ozu--to the West. Look for his perceptive essays about these artists. (Did you know he was the film curator at the NYC MOMA?)

This is a must-read and a great way to introduce yourself to Donald Richie's work and to Japan!

4 out of 5 stars From the man who was almost King........2003-06-01

Hi, I am a Master, and for many years now I have made a living by teaching chess, lately all on the Internet. I also ask if you are seriously considering buying this book, that you stop and read all of the other reviews FIRST!

      Don't be fooled by the four-star rating, the material in this book is super-outstanding. (The pages are somewhat see-through, the fonts are not the kind I prefer, and the diagrams are the old-style type that I don't care for ... they are too hard to see clearly.) And I almost never give a five-star rating anymore, I save that for the chess books that border on perfection. {A shrinking group, to be sure!}

One of the things you should know is that GM E. Geller was a VERY STRONG PLAYER!! (Maybe he belongs in the 100 strongest of all time!) He won the championship of the Soviet Union twice - one of these tournaments was (statistically) one of the strongest of that type ever held. He was a CANDIDATE for the World Championships ... SIX (6) TIMES!!!!! He had a PLUS (lifetime) score against many great players like Bobby Fischer! (Only Spassky proved to be his undoing, stopping him twice in the Candidate Matches to the tune of 2.5 - 5.5.)

Another important fact he was EXTREMELY rspected by his peers as both a theoretician AND a teacher. (Mikhail Botvinnik said of him: "Before Geller, we did not understand the King's Indian.")

He was also a hard working player who was an extremely industrious analyst. One player - whom I shall not name here - was very suspicious of others analysis, and trusted almost no one. But when he was given a piece of Geller's work, he took it at face value, and did not even bother to check it!!

So the only question that remains to us now is determine is this a good chess book, and does it have something worthwhile to offer?

I think the key here can be found in the title ... or HOW DO I APPLY CHESS THEORY??? (I have always been a theory hound, and if I had won all my games where I stood better out of the opening, I would have been a GM a long time ago!!)

In the intro to game # 30, Geller tells you: # 1.) About the Dragon; # 2.) How it got its name; # 3.) And the general procedure with which to tackle this tough line. His notes are extremely incisive, I do not see how anyone could not learn something if they were to apply themselves.

This is NOT a perfect book - but almost no chess book is! (I have studied all 100 of the games here. A small handful I have subjected to DEEP, computer-assisted analysis.) And as one gentleman already noted, this is NOT a beginner's book.

But consider this: # 1.) ONE HUNDRED very carefully annotated games; # 2.) MANY different opening lines; # 3.) Geller often tells you there are 2-3 good ways to meet certain lines, and which one may be best; # 4.) Things like openings, mid-game plans, and the technique for certain endings are discussed in GREAT detail.

I personally think that this book would benefit ANY player who fell into one of the following groups: # 1.) Might be a fan of Geller's; # 2.) Is looking for s SERIOUS chess book, maybe one he (or she) could study for years!; # 3.) Is looking to model themselves after a very strong player; # 4.) Is looking to sharpen or improve your tactics. If you feel you belong in any of these groups, then this is a book for you. (But if you would characterize yourself as a lazy person, don't bother.)

My rating of the MATERIAL and game choice in this book would be outstanding, A+. As long as you really want to work hard and have good study habits, I feel this could be a book that you could benefit from. IT IS ALSO A BOOK WITH SOME REALLY NICE GAMES AND SOME FANTASTIC ANALYSIS!!

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners. Class A is about right.......2003-05-11

100 games, well annotated. Each is preceded by some historical background. Often, there are anecdotes embedded within the text. There are plenty of comments amongst the ample and occasionally comprehensive annotation. In principle, this is a fine book, for a fairly advanced player.

Geller devotes the most attention to opening variations. Half the book is arranged by opening, in fact, and the other half by player, which makes me think that Geller was never sure whether he sought to illuminate the openings or to show off his own victories.

And yes, he has only victories here, but they are not all brilliantly won games. For example, in Game 99 against Fischer, he reveals after Fischer's
      20. a3?
"This loses in paradoxical fashion. As Fischer writes, a couple of hours after the game he found the problem-like win.... [extensive analysis follows]... This is the truth, established after many years of painstaking analysis. The number of moves with two exclamation points demanded of White shows how difficult it was to find all this during the restricted time of one game. A calculation of all the variations was impossible, and intuition in sharp situations was not Fischer's strongest weapon." A very intersting comment.

If you're a strong player looking for instruction on a wide variety of openings, then this book may be recommended. It is far too advanced for me.

This may be a petty complaint, but there is something visually unattractive about the contents. It may be the old-style diagrams, where to me the black and white queens are nearly indistinguishable. It may be the in-line algebraic annotations, which are in the exact same font as the text. It may be the lightness of the printing. Whatever the reason, I do not enjoy opening this book. However, the format is certainly superior to Bronstein's popular Zurich collection, so I may hold the minority opinion. Also, the Cadogan cover and binding are typically sturdy.

I think the book is aimed at about 1900-2000 rated players.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Game Collection of A Great Player.......2000-02-02

Among players who never became world champion, few are as great as Geller (perhaps only Keres, Nimzowitch, and Rubinstein). Indeed, Geller is the only player who has a winning record against the greatest player of all time: Robert James Fischer! Because I know Eduard Gufeld---Geller's Trainer----I could go on and on recounting tails of Geller's genius; however, such is not the purpose of this review. Nonetheless, I must say that even given Geller's greatness he has outdone himself with this game collection. This is a truly brilliant book: It is a classic! Geller's games leave one with the impression of the profound and of the barely comprehensible. There is no watering down of ideas in this book: Everything is presented to the reader just as Geller saw it. This book is pure, unmitigated grandmaster chess! If you want to "think like a grandmaster," this is the book for you. However, even if you are only interested in chess as a recreation, it is worth buying the book just to play through Geller's win against Psakhis---not to mention the innumerable other masterpiecies!

5 out of 5 stars A Great book to improve your play !!.......1998-08-27

I would like to recomend this book to all chess-players who have reach around 1600 in rating. Geller asumes that you know the basic facts whithin chess-theory and you must read this book if you want to improve your game futher. The strength of this book is that the chess commentary are clear and precise. Geller let go inside his mind (a chess labratory) and let you understand more of the positional positon in play. Geller is a master in attacking play, he is slow builder in terms of positional play which often reach it climax. When it come to opening Geller i s especially strong on the Kings_Indian defence and the Sicilian. However in my viev Geller repeats the variations to often- this is especially truth about the Ruy-Lopes. I also miss some parties where Geller loses (in fact he wins all the parties in the book), But overall this is a great book if you are a good chessplayer with a knowledge of chess basics. Geller let you see the highest thought in human chess, and by reading his book it makes it easier for you to hopefully reach there one day yourself.

      4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read.......1998-08-24

Evfim Geller is probably not well known to many younger players, yet he was one of the top GMs in the period from 1953 to 1980. He had a plus score versus Fischer and his score versus past, present and future world champions was commendable. If he had ever developed a knack for beating Korchnoi his place in history might have been much different. This is a series of annotated games arranged by opening. I've always liked this arrangement (like in Tartakover & DuMont's 500 Master Games of Chess and the Informator series). It allows one to get a good feel for an opening by playing through several successive annotated examples in one sitting without searching around for them. One cannot help but learn by consistent exposure to top-class games presented as Geller does. This is not a "desert-island" classic, but a very worthwhile effort from a strong and dynamic player. Buy it.

        Book Description

What Suze Orman did for the stock market, Lisa Vander is doing for real estate

This single parent and self-made success introduces real estate investing to the general public. In The Real Guide to Making Millions Through Real Estate, Lisa Vander provides a step-by-step plan, lacking in most real estate books, that lets anyone earn long-term profits, starting with as little as $3,000. Her book is a practical how-to guide that educates, motivates, and transforms the way people purchase, sell, hold, and manage real estate. Unlike most real estate investing books, this is no “get rich quick” scheme; it’s a long-term plan to make and grow sustainable wealth--in other words, “get richer and stay richer.” Charts, graphs, and worksheets make its contents easily accessible, and the success stories sprinkled throughout prove that anyone can benefit from the advice within.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect book for new Real Estate Investors.......2006-08-11

This book teaches you the fundamentals of long term Real Estate investing. This is not a get rich quick kind of book. This book helped me develop my Real Estate investment strategy. I learned how to evaluate property to ensure it meets my investment objectives, to ensure I do not overpay for property and how to evaluate my property on an ongoing basis to ensure it continues to meet my investment objectives. Before I was finished with the book people thought I was a professional investor because of my knowledge of Real Estate investing.

5 out of 5 stars Straight forward great Advise.......2006-08-11

What I really like about this book was that it is not a get rich quick scheme. It is solid, knowledgeable investing information to build wealth. Each chapter builds on the previous. There are many good examples in plain English. The book is well written and basically lays out how to really make money and understand real estate investing. A smart book for budding investors.
