Book Description
As the creative director of Calvin Klein, where he worked for nearly three decades, Zack Carr helped develop the house into one of the premier forces in fashion worldwide. His premature death from cancer in 2000 cut short a life and career that indelibly altered the status of American fashion, and in the process more than any other helped stamp it "The Look" and "Lifestyle" to which so many across the globe aspire. As a tribute to Carr's life and legacy, his brother George Carr and famed designer Sam Shahid have compiled an exquisite collection of photographs, sketches, and selected writings that make Zack Carr an indispensable reference volume for aestheticians and people of taste, whether town or country. Born and raised in Kerriville, Texas, Carr began his career working for B. Altman & Co and manufacturer Donald Brooks before joining Calvin Klein in the early '70's. He left Klein in 1984 to launch his own company, the Zack Carr Collection, but returned in 1988 where he worked until being diagnosed with Poem's Syndrome, a rare paralyzing blood cancer. Despite the illness, Carr continued to create, and, as the paralysis spread through his body, had to reteach himself how to draw. In his sketchbooks, Carr would paste cut-outs of his sketches, his "dolls" as he called them, alongside his inspirations - a Horst postcard here, a paparazzi snap of Carolyn Bessette there. Carr considered his sketchbooks to be "what I consider a true expression of myself...my being...what interests me, what excites me, what is me...and what is my true being." Zack Carr is a splendid journey to that somewhere, taking us on a tour of his world inhabited by many muses (Balenciaga, Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy), friends (Marina Schiano, Gwyneth Paltrow), and inspiration found in the form of art itself.

A kiss from one brother to another........2003-03-08
I bought Zack Carr because I heard it contained a few pics of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and I needed a great looking book to sit on my console table.
This book is wonderful. It has a contemporary, artsy feel without being cold. Book contains personal pics of Carr, which are great, many design sketches, tons of photos of his friends, and co-workers which include Calvin and Kelly Klein (several pics), Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (four pics), a three or four page spread on Audrey Hepburn, a few pics of Kate Moss and Elaine Irwin (two), to name a few.
A beautiful, loving tribute, a book anyone would be proud to have in their library.

Since I am one degree of separation from George, I am a little partial. After reading Zack Carr however, I felt as though I knew ZACK through no separation. (does that make any sense?) George put this book together in a poignant and very eloquent way. It's simple yet touching, and you won't be disappointed if you decide to purchase. This is probably one of the greatest acts of sibling love I have ever seen.

Adorable book!.......2007-09-30
Such a cute book! The recipes are simple and the dialog written along side of them are great fun! Enjoy!
Book Description
Why do so many people identify with Ziggy' Because he represents the innocent side in everyone, the optimist who lives deep down and wants to see the good in everything. No matter how bad things get, Ziggy always finds the bright spot. Because he relates better to his animal friends than to people, this adorable underdog often contemplates the meaning of life with his cuddly and accepting pets. In every panel, his insecurities encourages us to laugh at ourselves and to take everything in stride. Syndicated since 1971, Ziggy is faithfully read by more than 75 million readers every day. His message is one of hope and humor and hanging on to your dreams even when everything's got you down. Ziggy is a comic strip that has more than stood the test of time-with fun and spirit.

Ziggy is all knowing.......2006-02-25
To bad heis n't a real guru! This book is very to the point and real. If poeple lived their lives like Ziggy, it wouldbe a much nicer life and world. We would slow down and not let the things that stress us out do so as much. Get into some ziggyism's and take a break.
A gentle, highly enjoyable and entertaining compilation.......2002-10-07
The Zen Of Ziggy is the latest collection of single-panel (and the occasional Sunday sequence) comics about a little bald guy, the pets he adores, and his constant struggle to catch any sort of break in life. Perpetually faced with TV shows that have given up any pretense of disguising their lack of merit; park birds who criticize his taste in low-quality popcorn; psychoanalysts who offer reassurances about "page fright"; and a great deal more, Ziggy's cheerful good humor and ability to survive the little mishaps that innately resemble those that everyone has encountered before at one time or another, lending a wry and universal empathy to this gentle, highly enjoyable and entertaining compilation.

Useful and Extraordinarily Entertaining.......2001-11-29
I am pathetic in the kitchen, the perfect recipient for a book like this. My sister sent it to me because before my husband started cooking for me, all I could manage for dinner was cereal or rice and frozen vegetables. This book really does break down what many people would find obvious but that I never knew, but it's main allure is its random, offbeat humor.
Customer Reviews:
Simple recipies, very funny stories........2005-10-03
This is a very short and simple book. But when it comes to cooking fish it is better to keep it simple and short anyway. So the recipes in this book are all winners.
In between the recipies are some smatterings of writing and some drawings. They are even better than the recipies. This book is perfect for short quick reads, so it ended up in the toilet (but not in a bad way).
Book Description
Nobody ever promised Laura (except maybe her high school Spanish teacher, and she never understood what he was saying anyway) that life was going to be easy. And sure enough, it wasn't. From her high school talent competition where she performs a stunning syncopated "funktastic" dance to "Car Wash," to her first job and subsequent dismissal at the local all-you-can-eat steakhouse, to the ultimate revenge fantasy of a stand-up comic who has been heckled one too many times, this is a sardonic look into the everyday workings of a performer and her not-so-stellar life. Wildly irreverent and darkly comic, these stories will make you laugh, cringe, and ultimately identify.
Customer Reviews:
Though a fun read, it's not funny.......2006-03-06
These stories generally lack Kightlinger's sarcasm and bite, with the exception of the discussion on the items left in grandmother's casket. Her frankness and lonliness still make the stories a good read. It was not all that funny like I was expecting it to be.
Garbage.......2003-06-08
This book is one of the worst I've read. Can't believe my friend convinced me to waste my money on this.
She's honest? Right. That's what she wants you to think. Try unconvincingly cynical in the most brattiest possible way. Go spend your money on something that's actually worth it. Like Clifford the Big Red Dog.
Original, Worth Reading, but very Depressing.......2003-04-03
I enjoy Laura's standup but the book was classified as a comedy and I think I laughed only once while reading the book. Dark humor is something I'm quite found of and I'm a huge fan of movies like the Royal Tenebaums which is why I've been drawn to Laura. (Not to mention she's unnecessarily attractive) The book is depressing and even though I found her teen years interesting, it was harder to identify with her being male. I was also disappointed with Laura's ability to see life so one dimensionally, I understand she's been through a lot, but then so has everyone! I wanted to just give her a hug and so life isn't so bad, or good, its just life. I'd recommend this book to my cynical female friends who enjoy dark humor, that's about it.
heartbreakingly hilairious.......2002-06-18
Laura Kightlinger, like no one else, finds the humor in some of life's darkest most awkward moments! I laughed out loud. For that matter, I cried out loud! Looking forward to more from this talented woman!
I cried 'till I laughed.......2002-02-18
Great book! A seminal work by a first-time author. Plus, I loved Laura in "Mulholland Drive," but she needs to know that she doesn't have to take her shirt off if she wants to get movie parts.
Book Description
Explore the traces of early Hollywood hidden within Charlie Chaplin’s timeless films. This stunning work of cinematic archeology combines Chaplin’s movie images with archival photographs, vintage maps, and scores of then-and-now comparison photographs to conjure up the silent-movie era from an entirely new perspective. By describing the historical settings found in such Chaplin classics as The Kid, City Lights, and Modern Times, Bengtson illuminates both Chaplin’s genius and the evolving city that served as a backdrop for his art. Part time machine, part detective story, Silent Traces presents a unique look at Chaplin’s work, and a captivating glimpse into Hollywood’s most romantic era.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-Have!.......2007-03-21
Add me to the list of people raving about this book. If you have the Keaton book (Silent Echoes) you'll love this one too. I can't imagine a Chaplin fan (or any fan of classic movies) who wouldn't want to add this to their collection. That "Add To Shopping Cart" button is calling your name!
Silent Traces: Discovering Early Hollywood through the Films of Charlie Chaplin.......2007-03-09
Excellent book with great number of photographies and explained of very detailed form. I recommend them for buying futures.
Part Two of a Trilogy? One Can Only Hope!.......2007-01-11
In 1999, I posted a 4-star Amazon review of John Bengtson's "Silent Echoes--The Films of Buster Keaton." While I praised the book as a masterpiece of urban archaeology, I think...at the time...I ultimately considered it to be an accomplished curiosity. It's not and, if I had it to do over, I'd opt for a 5+ rating. "Silent Echoes," and now "Silent Traces," are ingenious works of film scholarship that use environment and architecture to map the unique genius of their respectives subjects. At the time of the "Silent Echoes" publication, I lived in California and made a number of trips to LA armed with my now dog-eared copy of the book. (The related website was an equally dazzling revelation in unearthing long-lost LA.) The more I used the book to guide me through the landscape of Keaton's filmography, the more it became apparent that Bengtson was, in fact, charting the manner in which Keaton spun comic genius from the world around him. He constructed a unique world view from the pieces of the real world...a now quaint and unrecognizable LA of a past age more akin to the gentleness of spirit that imbued his work. If nothing else, the book was worth it for its view into the now faded glories of Venice Beach. I'm now on the East Coast, so I'll have less opportunity to trace Chaplin's journey through old LA, but that doesn't make the book any less rewarding. Now, we can only hope that, six or seven years down the road, Mr. Bengtson does the same service to Harold Lloyd, thus completing a study of the Holy Trinity of silent comedy. The rating for the Keaton and Chaplin books: Not enough stars in the heavens!
AN ABSOLUTE MUST!!!!.......2006-12-18
Along with Bengtson's previous SILENT ECHOES (Buster Keaton) this is absolutely amazing stuff!!! I've been fascinated by this before & after photography since purchasing several Dover books (NEW YORK THEN AND NOW; WASHINGTON...etc)in the 1970's (still available at amazon) & Frassanito's series of Civil War books (GETTYSBURG...ANTIETAM, ETC...1980's) that show modern views of battlefield sites (also still avail...). But Bengtson clearly is the undisputed master of such "STUFF". The detective work involved in locating the actual sites where Chaplin (& Keaton) filmed their masterpieces is nothing less than astounding! Why isn't this guy working for our government on some top-secret spy project? I was & am simply blown away by Bengtson's books! I've revisited Chaplin's & Keaton's films & have enjoyed them even more (if that can possibly be) thanks to Bengtson. What's next...Lloyd?...Sennett& Keystone?...Fatty?
AN ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE FOR FANS OF CHAPLIN, KEATON & SILENT SCREEN COMEDY!!! BUY AT ALL COSTS.
Wonderful Silent Film History.......2006-11-02
It's not often that Charlie Chaplin follows Buster Keaton and damn if I know why, but in this case neither Chaplin nor his fans should mind. John Bengtson succeeds brilliantly at the sort of detective work Sherlock Holmes might have chosen with Moriarty truly gone and Holmes' restless curiosity turned to silent film history. I've lived in Los Angeles all my life and it's fascinating to learn how often I have crossed paths with Chaplin in so many familiar places. The area around the Old Plaza and Olvera Street, now including the block of Ord Street leading down to Philippe the Original, has an expanded and sublime new meaning now that I know around which corner Chaplin and Keaton were each chased by police and just where the little tramp hugged Jackie Coogan.

A Must Read for Anyone Planning to Move to Mexico.......2007-05-20
Something that I have to be careful of when I write about my experience as an American expat in Mexico is not to come across in my prose as an expat expert. I think I tend to do this, but be assured, it is unintentional. It is easy for any nonfiction writer to get into trouble with this.
I took a writer's workshop a few years ago where this warning was discussed. Whenever you write nonfiction, readers tend to regard you as an expert in the subject about which you write. It is mostly unavoidable since you, the writer, are not responsible for how someone interprets what you write. You cannot dictate your reader's perception of the prose you put on the page. No matter what you write, there is going to be someone, somewhere, who somehow takes it the wrong way. Such is the adventure of writing.
Lately, I've been investigating works on culture by specialists who I would interpret as indeed being experts in Mexican culture. I have had a great time looking at those who have gone before me. They have done decades of practical and academic investigation into the Mexican worldview that steadily flows through the culture of these wonderful people. I've been humbled, instructed, and corrected in what I've read, particularly by a book called, Mexicans & Americans Cracking the Cultural Code, written by cultural analyst Ned Crouch.
In some of the cultural bumps in my expat road I've been driving here in Mexico, I've run into things that have been, to use a hyperbole, mindboggling. However, Mr. Crouch, who is indeed academically and experientially qualified in Mexican culture, has given me criteria in his fine book with which to exist at peace with some of these cultural mysteries.
One particular thing that I learned is that you could become fluent in Spanish and never begin to crack the cultural code of Mexico. What is needed is Spanish fluency, which leads to Cultural fluency.
You've got to have both.
Americans from Hispanic heritage and who speak Spanish find it difficult to get along in Mexico's culture because they operate here with an American Cultural Worldview. You have to become not only bilingual but also bicultural to be a success here.
I recommend getting a copy of this book. If you are going to do business in Mexico, study in Mexico, teach ESL in Mexico, work in Mexico doing anything, or even if you plan on making this country your retirement home, you need to read this book.
Though it is slanted towards readers who plan on conducting business in Mexico, everything from the first word to the last is applicable for anyone who will be spending time in Mexico.
Doug Bower
THE PLAIN TRUTH ABOUT LIVING IN MEXICO
He doesn't have a clue!.......2006-12-24
Well written book--BUT... He's a member of the elite writing for the elite. Having worked with wetbacks on the same job, I've found Mexicans to be no different than the sons of european immigrants working in our Pennsylvania Factories & mines. People are people. And our European immigrant sons and grandsons are as superstitious & family orientated as any Mexican!
Mexican workers laugh at management "suits" like the author the same as we American workers laugh at them. We know who run the factories and who decides how they are run day to day--and it isn't the guys sitting in the air conditioned offices. Bet you that in Mexico the 2nd shift works hard so 3rd shift can loaf/sleep just like in the states.
If you are concerned about the "Our Borders" issue........2006-09-15
What a sad comment it is that so many Americans, well-fed, self-righteous, and "Christian", have ganged up to make life even tougher for Mexican immigrants.
Read this knowledgeable description of the people south of us to understand their feelings toward the US. Ned Crouch knows Mexicans! and uses his experiences with Mexicans to explain their loving, well meant, somtimes stiffbacked, sometimes childlike behavior.
I leave the book grateful that these cheerful mostly hard striving people are our neighbors
A must for those doing business in Mexico.......2005-08-27
Thanks to Ned Crouch we now have a guide for understanding the differences between the American Business man and our Mexican friends and partners. This should be required reading for any company who is doing business in Mexico and are serious about developing lasting relationships.
Very good Book.......2005-08-20
As in every book, not everything you read is absolutely true, but it is a very good appproach to understand US and México cultures.
