What a disappointment!.......2003-05-02

What a waste! These are beautiful designs but they are almost unusable due to poor charting. For some reason, these designs are charted using colored squares only (where has this designer been?? Hasn't she seen or heard the endless complaints from stitchers about this form of charting??). Granted there are some black & white symbol charts at the back of the book but only 12 designs out of about 60 are there (does this indicate the designer actually does know there is a problem with her charts?). Often the key is on a different page than the chart making it even more ludicrous to try to determine which color is which.

The only way I would be able to stitch many of these designs is if I first scaned them into Adobe Photoshop or a needlework charting program and let it tell me which squares go with which thread numbers (I haven't tried this yet).

If you want some gorgeous oriental designs that you can easily stitch see Joan Elliott's "A Cross Stitcher's Oriental Odyssey" - it is certainly a much better value for your money.

This is a lovely book of Chinese designs.......2002-09-04

The is a beautiful book containing designs to challenge the beginning as well as the advanced cross-stitcher. Each design includes details of the source of the design as well as some historical/cultural background. Many familiar Chinese symbols are represented including dragons, pagodas, phoenix, and my favorite the Chinese Zodiac with information on what date in a given year the Chinese year started.
There are two items that need mentioning but should not prevent the purchase of this book --
1) the color keys list Anchor floss numbers (this book was written and published in Britian where Anchor is more commonly used.) However, a floss conversion from Anchor to DMC is in the back of the book.
2) Some graphs (many larger designs are provided in both color and black and white)are on a small grid but this problem is easily solved with the enlargement feature on a copier.

This is a well researched book with many traditional Chinese designs. Well worth the money.

HUGE disappointment.......2002-04-24

If I could give this book a rating of zero, I would. First of all, it has the ugliest designs I have ever seen, and I love Asian designs. Also all the graphs are printed so small that you certainly couldn't use any of them for stitching. However, the author does provide black and white graphs at the end of the book to be photocopied and enlarged for stitching. All designs are charted for Anchor floss, with only one general conversion table given at the end of the book for DMC. The author does also give floss estimates, a materials-required list, and minimal instructions for making up each project.

Great Sweaters for Kids.......2002-01-21

This is one of the few knitting pattern books I actually used to knit sweaters for my daughter. Patterns for sixteen sweaters for children from six months to twelve years based on Chinese knitting techniques. Patterns rely on a variety of stitches, can be all one color and still present a unique look.

Beautiful, Colorful Designs.......2005-02-25

I absolutely love this book. There is a nice variety of colorful and beutiful designs in various sizes to complete. I did not like the foreign languages with them becuase they were not translated. That dissappointed me. I wouldn't mind stitching something in Persian on a Persian-styled piece, but I would like to be able to tell someone what it means, should they ask. The projects could be completed without the lettering. Overall, I am really enjoying this book. It is a nice sampling of needlework designs from the nationalities mentioned. My favorite designs from this book were the Persian and Indian designs. I would have liked to have seen a few more Turkish-styled pieces. There was only one, an eye-glass case design; but then again, Turkey wasn't mentioned in the title.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This laboratory thesis investigated the applicability of reflectance spectroscopy as a tool to measure desorption rates by directly observing the change in trichloroethylene bound to surface sites. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy holds the promise of being a faster technique with minimal sample preparation time. Reflectance spectroscopy's dependence on the surface of the sample is its greatest advantage, as well as its greatest disadvantage. Both high and low resolution scans were made of different soil samples contaminated by trichloroethylene. After the technique of spectral subtraction was used, potential TCE signals were observed from the dolomitic limestone sample. Unfortunately, due to the low level of the signal and high amount of noise, positive identification of the signals as TCE could not be established. The low resolution scans were unable to detect any possible TCE signals. More data is required to determine the sensitivity of the device as well as prove the linearity of the signal with concentration, before this technique can be proven to be useful for studying desorption kinetics.

China has witnessed fast urban growth in the recent decade. This study analyzes spatio-temporal characteristics of urban expansion in China using satellite images and regionalization methods. Landsat TM images at three time periods, 1990/1991, 1995/1996, and 1999/2000, are interpreted to get 1:100000 vector land use datasets. The study calculates the urban land percentage and urban land expansion index of every 1km^2 cell throughout China. The study divides China into 27 urban regions to conceive dynamic patterns of urban land changes. Urban development was achieving momentum in the western region, expanding more noticeably than in the previous five years, and seeing an increased growth percentage. Land use dynamic changes reflect the strong impacts of economic growth environments and macro-urban development policies. The paper helps to distinguish the influences of newly market-oriented forces from traditional administrative controls on China's urban expansion. on.

Crumb is in rare form here. His social commentary is unequalled. All the cool Weirdo stories in one book! I read this stuff for the first time, and what a treat. The Mode O'day stories are the funniest things I've read in years. Buy it!

I have these three books on audio. We can all read and read and read till our eyes fall out - but no way can these stories be enjoyed to the fullest unless you hear them read by the author. Mr. Armory has the purrfect voice and inflections. You'll laugh, cry and sigh all the way through. The author claims to be a "curmudgeon" but has more heart and compassion that he wants us to see!

I gave a full "book report" to my sister the special ed teacher - and she wants hard covers to read to her "kids"; but I made her promise to listen to the audiobooks first so she can really give a first rate presentation to her classes. It's my great pleasure to send them to her. J

This well written, witty book is a classic. I missed it when it was new, but find the essays to be timely and humorous. Anyone who has ever owned a cat with a lot of "attitude" will understand Mr. Armony's wry commentary. He uses his cat as a way to write about everything from chess and to animal welfare to the vagaries of love.

This book starts off slow, continues slow, and ends slow. Therefore it is not a very fast read. I would suggest it only for people who are extremely into cats or extremely bored out of thier minds. Although boring, the book has some insiteful facts. If you find it interesting to read about the life of a cat and scenes from the past of it's curmudgeon owner than this book would be great for you.

Readers everywhere will remember "The Cat Who Came for Christmas". The book is a classic. This books picks up when that one left off. If you love your cat, you'll love Cleveland Amory's books. Hick, even dog lovers find pleasure here. A New York alley cat named Polar Bear will be everything you can imagine and more.

Not the worst book I ever read..........2001-04-19

Cleveland Amory, making much ado about (often) nothing, is more of a fussbudget than a curmudgeon. His tone is mildly condescending, as though he is trying to be funny -- something like Asimov, but Asimov was brighter.

I forced myself to keep reading, in the name of Amazon.com reviews, even though every few pages put me to sleep. In the three days (!) it took me to wade through the muck, my entire sleep schedule was disrupted. My own cat, meanwhile, showed his dislike by repeatedly resting his ample, uh, tail on the book. I had to keep reminding myself that "The Cat and the Curmudgeon" was NOT the WORST book I had ever read. I planned to rate the book at a * or a generous **, all the while scheming to meet Amory in a bar for the purpose of dumping a drink on his cantankerous self.

The stock certificates were amusing, and I can smile at how Polar Bear has Amory wrapped around his little, uh, claw. However, I did not find the book, as a whole, to be enjoyable.

When I reached the VIth of VII chapters, I reevaluated my opinion. I did enjoy reading about the Fund's Ranch sanctuary -- enough so that I will be looking for Cleveland Amory's "Ranch of Dreams: A Lifelong Protector of Animals Shares the Story of His Extraordinary Sanctuary" (available on Amazon).

I'm not sure who is the curmudgeon, or if there are two. I found Amory's prattle unbearable at times. However, I can't help but like a fellow animal lover -- and indeed, the idea to tell women in fur that it makes them look fat, why, it's enough to earn the whole book an additional star right there.

In summary, I'm glad that I didn't spend $... on the book, but also glad that I read it, and glad that I supported my local Bookmobile in doing so. I will give Amory another chance.

Slow read.......1999-01-28

I loved the idea of this book and I love what the author has done with his farm in Texas. But this story drug on forever. It's just not interesting. I found myself wanting to pick up another book.

I love animals and was happy to hear about Mr. Amory's work with animals rights. But I didn't find the book interesting.

Some good & tricky problems. Also a number of non simple squeezes that few will get, as well as some that I just thought weren't that good.

Intermediates will have trouble with tese problems. You can learn a little, but I think there are much better books for intermediates.

The book is average, its not bad. I just don't think its especially good.

Stilted .......2007-05-25

Revising Business Prose was recommended to me by a co-worker. When not presenting examples of concise writing, Richard Lanham writes with a slow, stilted style, antithetic to his own recommendations. While instructing readers not to overwrite, he overwrites.

I won't even talk about the chapter, "Who's Kicking Who?" O! Wait a moment. I just did. He defends his misuse of the subject, "who," in place of the object, "whom," by claiming "whom" sounds stilted. So, it is OK for him to employ idiomatic language and yet write a book criticizing the same. At almost $0.35 per page ($40 MSRP/117 pages), I don't see the value.

Business writing revision made simple........2006-07-21

This great little book is an island of hope in a world flooded with pompous, pretentious messages. If you practice what Dr. Lanham preaches you will write leaner and tighter texts. You will use his smart paramedic method to get rid of unwanted lard. Just one wish for future editions: Please include some practical exercises. This will help less experienced readers not only gain but retain better writing skills.

Easy to understand .......2006-03-10

If you are looking to revise business prose this book is really good with explaining the process step by step. It is in plain english, no big words you will need to look up.It is also fun to read.

Good Focus, Good Examples, Will Improve Your Writing.......2004-05-30

There are two kinds of bad English: one is the bureaucratic bad English, using 100 words where 10 will do, and the other kind is the one I have suffered from for decades, complex layering of convoluted ideas with too many commas and semi-colons, and too few periods. In a word, undisciplined.

This book will help both kinds of English. It is short, to the point, and after reading and practicing what this book preaches, you should be able to cut your confusion of words in half, and increase your clarity and communications value by 100%
