Customer Reviews:
Great Reference Volume for Firecrackers!.......2007-02-13
My husband was looking for a book on firecrackers and I tried the local book stores, i.e. Barnes and Nobles, Bookmart, Books a Million, but no luck. I browsed the internet and the reviews on firecracker reference materials were few and far between. Finally I came across this book on Amazon and took a chance it would please him.....he's quite picky about his reference library. This soft-cover book is GREAT! It is packed with beautiful, vibrant full color photos of the common labels all the way up to the very rare. The book layout is dotted with photos and the glossary is helpful to even the intermediate collector. The section "Interview with a Collector" gives a nice insightful look into the pursuit of fireworks labels. The history of firecrackers is also discussed, giving the collector a great back-story to the industry. No price guide, but that is fine with my husband, as it tends to date a book after a couple of years. This is an informative addition to the Hubby's library......he's happy and I'm glad.
Beautiful drawings pack an illustrated history.......2001-02-20
Bright, colorful pages packed with color illustrations and photos chart the art and history of the firecracker, from their construction and advancement to the making of labels and items promoting them. Beautiful drawings pack an illustrated history which invites leisure browsers as much as researchers, and which is very highly recommended for general library collections.
Experience the Thrill.......2000-08-04
This book shows great insite into the history of the firecracker and the intricate artwork involved with the packaging of them. The clarity of the illustrations are wonderful, its hard to believe some of the labels are as old as they are. I highly recommend this book to anyone who can remember the excitement of being able to "set off" these firecrackers on the 4th of July, without worrying about breaking the law. Those of you who were not as lucky to experience this thrill, will definitely find this book fun.
Art! and History?.......2000-08-01
Excellent beautifully illustrated book well worth the money. The illustrations and layout are extremely well done. This is easy reading that covers some terrtory not well documented anywhere else (Vietnam.) Some historical inaccuracies especially in the history of the manufacture of "Chinese" crackers in the 20th century. Overall an excellent job! Highly reccomended to anyone who has an interest in the subject, or who just likes the imagery of the old labels.
Things you were afraid to ask about firecrackers.......2000-07-26
(As noted in the last pages of this book, firecrackers are now politically incorrect, suffering the wrath of do-gooders, safety mavens and law enforcement. For those of us old enough to remember a pre-"nanny state" summer, this book brings back wonderful memories. By the time I was old enough to get real cherry bombs, they were outlawed. But I could tell a few stories...)
I always wondered how even today, firecrackers in their millions could be produced. The answer, documented in his book, surprised me. This book reveals the fate of the companies whose names appeared on the labels I saw in the 1960s. Ever wonder what happened to Kwong Hing Tai? The authors reveal how the firecracker trade developed in China and made its way to the United States. Even some of today's importers are mentioned.
Technically speaking, the book is well printed and the illustrations are crisp and sharp, not bad for paper originals that may be most of 100 years old. Although not exhaustive, there is good reference for collectors. I'd recommend you to get a copy of this book while it is still available. I look forward to many hours of pleasure leafing through my copy.

ASIN: 1593072791 |
Book Description
It's the final volume of Samurai Executioner and, like the previous nine volumes, the last is a combination of life's varying tides of good fortune and ill circumstance. The woman who once stole the weapons of samurai cops is becoming a cop herself. It's a story of gender struggles in a time long past. All the while criminals keep losing their heads to Asa the decapitator. But one criminal might leave something behind that could hurt our favorite protagonist.
Customer Reviews:
That's IT??.......2006-09-14
Perhaps I'm simply spoiled by "Lone Wolf and Cub", but just as the fictional Asaemon was no match for the fictional Ogami, so this final volume of "Samurai Executioner" is no match for the final volume of "Lone Wolf".
Which is not to say it isn't a marvelous work of art. As usual, this volume is a graphical feast for the eye; A lovingly detailed, beautifully rendered snapshot of Tokugawa Japan. As in the other volumes, we see a sympathetic main character, well-rendered supporting characters, and a series of fascinating vignettes of Tokugawa-era Japan.
What falls flat is the story itself. In this story the main character -- Yamada Asaemon -- has ceased to grow and mature as a character. More and more of the focus is on the supporting characters of Shinku the Kappa and her new husband, a policeman. As their marriage grows and flourishes, Yamada by contrast seems to become little more than an organic guillotine, setting up each story and concluding in the usual efficient way.
Perhaps the most frustrating aspect is the way this final volume ends -- in media res. The final story is no different from any of the others. There is no sense, as there is in Lone Wolf, of pacing, building drama, conflict, growth of the character, building gradually to a crescendo and finally resolving in a poignant, if tragic, end.
By contrast, Yamada's story has no ending. He simply walks off the stage in the last story ... and that's it. Nothing more. He doesn't even disappear in the last panel, if I remember correctly. There is no sense of tension, no over-arching backstory. We are merely presented with a final set of episodes and then an abrupt cutoff, in media res.
I suppose it is possible that the series was cancelled before it could be properly concluded. But in any case, this unsatisfactory finale is why I rate the book a mere three stars, rather than the customary five Kazuo Koike consistently earns ... not only from Amazon customers, but from comics authorities worldwide.
One final word of warning: There are some fairly explicit sex scenes in this volume that may not be to the taste of western readers. Unless your children are already familiar with the Kama Sutra, it would be best to save this for college-age adults.
The last volume of Kokie and Kojima's "Samurai Executioner".......2006-06-09
"Punished is not the man himself, but the evil that resides in him."
With Volume 10 we come to the last collection of "Samurai Executioner" manga stories from Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, the creators of "Lone Wolf and Cub." In the last story in this paperback published in the Japanese format, Decapitator Asaemon essentially walks off into the sunset. However, before the first of these fifty-four stories we knew that the executioner would die at the hands of Ogami Itto, the title character of Koike and Kojima's "Lone Wolf & Cub" epic. Consequently, "Samurai Executioner" is a prequel of sorts, and both certainly represent the same carefully researched re-creation of Japan's Edo Period. But we quickly discovered the biggest difference between the two series is that Asaemon is not on a quest that provides a massive story arc into which each story can fit. By the time we come to this final set of stories, we know that not all of them are about the people he has to execute. The title for this volume, "A Couple of Jitte," is appropriate because it refers to Kasajiro, the patrolman who was so proficient with the kaginawa (hook rope), who ended up marrying Shinko, the mysterious woman with "kappa," the turtle-like demon, tattooed on her back. She is asked to join the patrol and two of the six stories here are about them (Asaemon never even appears in the first). There are also the tales of the condemned with their usual final requests, and an interesting last story to serve as the coda for the series:
(49) "The Virtue Boat" is about a condemned woman who has let her hair grown down to the ground. Her final request is that she be allowed to hold her hair in her hands so that when Aesamon cuts off her head, he will also cut off her hair. She also asks him to take that hair to Seiji, a boat captain on the Gyotoku Riverbank. Aesamon honors her request, and thinks that he knows the reason for the request. But there is a final twist he does not foresee.
(50) "A Couple of Jitte" is the story in which the town commissioner and the head lieutenant talk to Kasajiro about Shinko taking up the jitte (the truncheon carried by street cops). Kasajiro is nervous and a bit jealous about his wife working with him, but she proves herself on their first murder case together. She tries to have him take the credit, but learns that is not what really matters to a couple of jitte.
(51) "The Chrysanthemum Head" is the story of an old man named Chrysanthemum Shigezo, who brings a beautiful Chrysanthemum cutting to his execution. He also has a two part request for Aesamon. First, he wants the executioner to cut off the head of the flower before he cuts off Shigezo's head. Then he wants Yamada-sama to grow a second cutting of the Chrysanthemum and when it blooms a year from now to cut off its head as well. Shigezo has always heard that Aesamon must understand those he executes. So there is a lesson to be learned here and along with the executioner we learn what is done month by month to crow the Chrysanthemum and come to the moment of perfect understanding.
(52) "Umbrella for Two" returns us to the couple of jitte, who have trouble keeping their hands off of each other while on a stakeout. So the commissioner of the northern town decides to pair Shinko with Hikji, the undercover patrolman. He thinks it will be interesting to see what happens and that indeed proves to be the case as Hikji tries to put the moves on Shinko, only to be caught by Kasajiro. The ending might be a surprise, but it is also nice to find that this troubled couple have become such complete partners.
(53) "Sixty Day Nails" is about a woman whose final request is to be allowed to cut her nails. She had murdered her husband and Aesamon had heard the dead man had his nails cut, so he questions the woman about what happened. Because of what he hears, he decapitates the woman when she has one nail left to cut, and then has to explain his action to the mystified witnesses.
(54) "Cough" is an odd final story in which a man, racked by coughs, is executed. But then others start coughing as well, until even the executioner himself is coughing. The point is left to someone else other than Asaemon to explain at the end, but it does provide a rather poetic viewpoint of the world in which the executioner and those he executes all live. I do not know if this was intended as the coda to the series, which ended with the death of Kojima in 2000, but it certainly becomes an appropriate tale for that position.
It was nice to have this series to turn to once I was finished with "Lone Wolf & Cub," and now I will try the four volumes of "Lady Snowblood" by Koike and Kazu Kamimura. I do not know if that will prove a suitable substitute for what I have enjoyed with "Samurai Executioner," but I am loathe to leave this world yet.

Return of the Timewaster Letters

Customer Reviews:
Bloomin' marvelous read.......2006-07-21
Loved it. A collection of silly but exceedingly polite letters written to real organizations pitching Cooper's ideas(seemingly pluck from the air). A few themes are carried through the collection (wife's bad ankle and the ongoing struggle to fix the garden shed doors) regardless of the letter's subject matter. I was continually amazed by the good-humoured and patient letters of reply. Bloody lovely sketches too. Delightful.
The funniest book I've ever read.......2006-05-12
I cannot disagree more with aurelius' review. Naughty aurelius. If you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all, didn't your mother teach you any manners, luv?
This is the funniest book I have ever read, so funny that the neighbours on both sides phoned the police on hearing manic laughter emmanating from my bedroom window non-stop between the hours of 10pm and 2am last night.
The police confiscated my copy of the book for causing a disturbance of the peace and as they drew away from our house at 5am (after I'd made them a nice cup of tea) I could hear manic laughter drifting playfully out of the windows of the police car, as the policeman who wasn't driving sat reading Robin's book.
I do not believe it is normal for British policemen to sample confiscated material under normal circumstances, so a big thumbs up to Mr Cooper for making our local bobbies more daring.
I have ticked the box saying I am over the age of 13 even though I'm 46. I hope that's OK.
I FOUND IT A VERY FUNNY EXERCISE IN NONSENSE.......2006-05-02
Well... Mr.Cooper did something I thought no one would ever think of... take a number of funny-named/strange companies and associations on the UK and write them absolutely silly (but looking like they are serious) letters. These letters propose daring and new projects or ideas (each one sillier than the one before). And he gets many polite (yet funny) responses.
I think this is a great book to have. The author writes very well and he has a great sense of "written" timing.
Some of my favorites:
He writes to a famous clarinetist asking for a favour: help him gather 200 other clarinetists and surprise his wife for her birthday (for the couple is a fan of "all things clarinettal").
He writes to a "named-after-someone" Society saying that he went to school with THAT person and wondering what did THAT person do in order to have a society named after him... since he was the one who used to bully THAT person when they were in school.
He writes to a strange sound-related company trying to show them a new machine (designed by him) that reduces noise level by 25 times in a certain area. He gets a welcoming responce from the company and sends them a completely stupid technical diagram that makes no sense.
Or... he writes to an turism association trying to sell them an awful add campaign based on a horrible character.
You should try it.
Reading THIS is a waste of time.......2006-03-31
Robin Cooper thinks he is funnier than he is. Essentially a one-idea book, he fills page after page with puerile letters to recipients with names and/or addresses which are particularly silly or peculiarly British (or both). The greatest humour lies in the fact that these addresses are real, rather than in anything that his limited wit is able to request of the addressee. Added to that is the fact that none of the replies really transcends the bland, or takes the game up to him, and the whole thing is really a rather onerous affair.
To call this adolescent is being grossly unfair to adolescents: read 2 pages in the bookshop and put it back on the shelf.
Book Description
This lively and accessible collection explores film culture's obsession with the past, offering searching and provocative analyses of a wide range of titles from Mildred Pierce and Brief Encounter to Raging Bull and In the Mood for Love. It engages with current debates about the role of cinema in mediating history through memory and nostalgia, suggesting that many films use strategies of memory to produce diverse forms of knowledge which challenge established ideas of history, and the traditional role of historians. The work of contemporary directors such as Martin Scorsese, Kathryn Bigelow, Todd Haynes and Wong Kar-wai is used to examine the different ways they deploy creative processes of memory, arguing that these movies can tell us much about our complex relationship to the past, and about history and identity. Pam Cook also investigates the recent history of film studies, re-viewing the developments that have culminated in the exciting, if daunting, present moment. Classic essays sit side by side with new research, contextualized by introductions which bring them up-to-date, and provide suggestions for further reading. The result is a rich and stimulating volume that will appeal to anyone with an interest in cinema, memory and identity.

Book Description
Here is a must-have for all competitive players who prefer to base their game on solid moves rather than speculation, and who want a reliable yet initiative-seeking opening repertoire for White, based on the opening moves 1 d4 followed by 2 c4. Using more than 300 diagrams, an international Grandmaster and regular writer for CHESS magazine analyzes specific main lines and variations to combat Black's possible choices of the King's, Queen's, and Bogoljubow-Indian defenses, as well as the Modern Benoni and Benko Gambit. There are also promising methods against the various Black defenses to the Queen's gambit, and commentary on the Dutch and Gruenfeld defenses. An excellent and practical opening guide.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific repertoire book - and I'm a 1.e4 player!.......2006-07-26
How do those Brits keep churning out such great writers? I've now added Richard Palliser to my database of British chess authors whose books I would confidently snap up sight unseen, joining Nigel Davies, John Cox, John Nunn, Joe Gallagher, et alia.
The present book, an opening repertoire for White, is a case in point. Palliser has selected a complete set of lines for all sensible (and some not-to-sensible) replies to 1.d4. These lines are characterized by being relatively light on theory, easy to learn, and straightforward to apply, without being offbeat. For example, he gives us systems for side-stepping the currently fashionable and theoretically burdensome Semi-Slav. His recommendations generally offer White only a small edge; but more important, the positions tend to be easier to play. That is, White can often rely on natural moves, and follow a straightforward plan; Black, on the other hand, may have to walk a narrower path toward equality. This approach won't win world championships, but it is just what we ordinary mortals need to face a weekend Swiss.
But I think the value of this book goes beyond that. It's one thing just to learn a few opening lines; Palliser's writing is so rich with ideas and helpful advice, communicated so transparently, that the reader cannot help but gain a deeper understanding of chess. It's all in the details - subtle implications of moves, move orders, piece placements, pawn structures - and how plans and tactics flow from those ingredients. The position assessments and game selections are honest - there is no attempt to oversell this repertoire by loading it with one-sided blowouts.
The repertoire unfolds via complete illustrative games, with important lines being given proportionally greater representation. Within games, variations and sub-variations are explored in the explanatory text. The material appears in fairly dense two-column format with smallish typeface and figurine algebraic notation. The diagrams are a bit small, too, but eminently clear. Game moves are in boldface, untabbed, but set off from the expository paragraphs. There is an index of variations and an index of complete games. Nice cover and binding.
An excellent repertoire book, no real weaknesses........2006-02-10
In a repertoire book, I look for three things:
1)Breadth of coverage. Does the author cover everything he should cover in the book?
2)Depth of coverage. Does the author provide sufficient research/theoretical material and games for the repertoire?
3)Prose. Does the author explain the ideas of the repertoire well?
Palliser does very well on all three parts. While I don't agree with all of his choices of systems, the coverage he provides is very, very good. This definitely is one of the best repertoire books out there. I would have to agree with a previous reviewer: this book and Kaufman's The Chess Advantage in Black and White (which I also have and like a lot) are the two best repertoire books out there right now.
At last!.......2004-03-31
At last, there is a comprehensive repertoire book for white, that totally lacks offbeat or inferior lines (to "surprise" or "stun" your opponents). This is a great book by Palliser, that is, along with the new "The Chess Advantage in Black and White" by Kaufman, for 1. e4, the best repertoire book I have ever seen.
A rare case of an objective repertoire book........2003-12-03
This is an excellent book. It provides white with a complete (unlike some other repertoire books I could mention...) set of systems with 1. d4 and usually 2. c4. The recommendations are sound and promise white at least an edge. Palliser gives detailed coverage of the lines he suggests and seems to me to give very objective and fair evaluations of the resulting positions. The book does not show the bias towards the author's side which some similar works do. The advice on plans is useful, sensible and always revealing. Palliser's flexibility is shown in the chapter on the Dutch where he is willing to suggest 2. Nc3, which departs from the 2. c4 rule. He covers 2. c4 as well to cope with 1. ... e6 move orders, and many authors would only have put in the 2. c4 material. Palliser goes the extra mile and offers the extra line. This is something always noticeable in this book; there are no obvious short cuts. Palliser's calm writing style helps to guide the reader through what are sometimes quite densely packed variations without losing sight of the most important points. I think anyone who plays 1. d4 and wants to play sound but promising lines would benefit from studying this book. A very fine effort.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2006-02-28
This book was actually written by the man who founded the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). Great information.
contents ok........2004-12-10
this book covers all the topics on home inspection, and its material is ok. except that there is no color pictures, all the photographs are black and white, some of them could be barely seen. that put me off a bit.
This book did not teach me anything I didn't already know.......2003-10-25
If you are looking for a book that will teach you a lot about real estate and home inspections then this is not the book for you. The chapter information and text content of this book was very basic and did not teach me anything I didn't already learn from other books that were much better. Inspecting homes is something I have done for many years and I would not recommend this book to any customers or contractors. If you know absolutely nothing about real estate then you might learn a few things but not too much.
Not a good reference book for home inspectors........2003-10-18
We have a home inspection business and I read many books on real estate topics. This book was OK but certainly not worth recommending to our inspection clients. Some of the topics discussed are irrelevant to home inspections - such as mold! There were many topics lacking in the amount of information the author provided. Maybe if you don't know anything about houses or construction you might learn a little bit from this book. If you have a novice level of knowledge about house inspections then you should buy a different book since this book won't teach you anything new.
Best book for home inspectors and home buyers.......2003-10-15
I first read this book 18 years ago, when getting into the home inspection business. I still find myself referring to it.
