Don't listen to the haters..........2007-08-15
Regardless of the art direction decision to include new greys in the artwork, Kirby's brutal genius with a pencil shows through loud and clear.
Who cares about the paper, ink and binding! I'm just happy that I can pay such a small sum and have all this art in such a small space on my shelf!
It's KIRBY, for god's sake!.......2006-11-11
The New Gods. The Fourth World. Whatever you call it, it's Jack Frickin' Kirby. You have to suffer through the "soft" Vince Colletta inks until you get to the Mike Royer "hard edged" inking, but it's worth it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You get the Kirby "faux-1970s Hippy" stuff, but this is the beginning of the "Darkseid" saga that epitomizes him as the quentisential DC Villain (sp?). Sorry, no speelcheck on Amazon. Forget the wanky dialogue and just concentrate on the images, and you'll find this the finest of King Kirby's efforts at DC. My personal fave was "Mister Miracle," but this runs a close second. Orion -- son of Darkseid -- fighting a never-ending battle against his father's hordes of Para-Demons and Hunger Dogs. What's not to love? My fave in "New Gods" is "The Pact", that reveals the true identities of Orion and Scott Free (like we didn't guess before). Too bad DC didn't have the foresight to see this saga to the end. (I know, "Hunger Dogs" et al, but I consider that an "alternate dimension"). Darkseid has become an icon of DC villains, but has frequently become a shadow of his former self. This is where it all began. Check it out.
Kirby Fun! A new way to experience the King!.......2005-12-24
These black-and-white Fourth World books have been controversial. On one hand, they were well-received and some of them even won industry awards for "best collection". On the other, the lack of color (and especially the added tones) turned off some purists who didn't like modern hands adding greytones to the original Kirby.
Personally, I enjoyed all of these volumes because they provided a different take on a Kirby classic. I have many original issues (not all) of the Fourth World books (New Gods, Forever People, Mister Miracle, Jimmy Olsen). Of course, the original is still the best because that's the format Kirby intended it for. It's his direct vision. But after that, I'm close to calling this the next-best version. Here's why:
* They collect the widest array of Fourth World material. There are previous color reprints of New Gods and color reprints of Jimmy Olsen, but only this format collects New Gods, Forever People and Mister Miracle all three in a consistent format.
* The black-and-white graytones provide a unique, darker vision of Kirby's world. The high-quality New Gods reprint in the eighties was beautiful to look out, but the excellent modern printing made it all too bright. Kirby relied on the dullness of newsprint to take the edge off the original so that it wasn't too cheerful looking. Here, the black-and-white solves that problem and even gives Kirby's fantastical characters a more realistic, serious edge that only serves to enhance the King's brilliantly dark satire. It's NOT Kirby's original vision, but I think it's truer to that vision than slick, baxter reprints in color would be.
Of course, if a HC archives edition were to come out, I'd buy it and enjoy it also!
Re-Color it or Don't -- the Greyscale Stuff is Awful.......2005-06-23
I found the shading they used to approximate the colors incredibly distracting. It muddied the art to the point where it seriously impaired my ability to track what was going on with the story. It may sound like a quibble, and you may be able to get past it, but I sure as heck couldn't.
Granted, it may have been the work itself. Hey, I know Kirby is God (see Waid, Mark). I know Kirby revolutionized the form. I know it is sacrilidge to badmouth Kirby. I know all of this, but my God, he was a terrible writer. He's the George Lucas of comic books -- a visual genius with a tin ear for dialogue and a slavish devotion to convoluted (and usually unrevealed) backstories. Couple that with the half-tone printing I mentioned before, and you've got a collection only a die-hard Kirby fan could love.
Okay, "The Pact" is pretty great. I'll give you that. If they ever come out with either a re-colored or BW line art version, I'll give it another shot.
Take That Ted Turner!.......2005-02-01
In what was surely a misguided attempt to mock their boss's penchant for colorizing classic movies, the gentle subversives at DC comics did the reverse with Jack Kirby's classic 4th World books. Politically it was a bold statement, but it doesn't serve Kirby's work well. I respect 'em for taking such a bold stance and whatnot. I just wish they had done it to Englehart's run on Batman or something boring like that.

Unexpected ending to a long saga.......2002-02-16
Jack Kirby concludes this saga on a note that it might continue for another round of books. However I did like the story; though it was a bit cartoony considering how Jack dramatically rendered his New Gods characters. All in all if you can get your hands on this volume it's worth it to see the fall of Darkseid.
The Long Awaited Finale To the New Gods Saga.......1999-11-18
A highly anticipated work when it came out. Jack's New Gods was cancelled prematurely before he got a chance to finish the story. Over a decade later, he had a chance to finish it. I believe that this finale is a bit different than what he originally envisioned. The story is a bit disappointing (I was expecting a real fight to the finsh between Darkseid and Orion) but the story and artwork are still strong and highly worthy of re-release in today's comics market.

You would think that a 12-pound dog would know her place in the world. Well, you obviously haven't met Clara, the pug that rules writer Margo Kaufman's life and the topic of discussion in Clara: The Early Years, Kaufman's hilarious account of living with the imperious pug. Kaufman, author of This Damn House! and the Hollywood correspondent for Pug Talk magazine, admits to being the "Official Pug Lollipop," a fact that Clara takes full advantage of. From their first meeting in a New York hotel room, Kaufman knows that Clara is "different": "Five minutes after her arrival, she inspected our junior suite like Leona Helmsley checking to see if the chocolate mints on the pillows were lined up at the right angles. Clara noticed the spacious queen-sized bed, the plush carpet, and the cozy loveseat in my sitting room. She beheld the cold hard floor--tile, not even marble--in her tiny bathroom. And she realized that the Human had put her own comfort over the pug's--a serious error that must be corrected at once so the Human would not make this mistake again." Sure, most people would have run screaming from the little Hitler, but not Kaufman. She's instantly smitten with the tiny, "bat-eared," "jack-o'-lantern"-toothed puppy, as the whole world soon would be. Joining Kaufman on book tours, stealing the show with her designer doggy cap and natural on-air charm, posing for photographs (to be used in dog-food endorsements, no less), and generally hamming it up and handing out orders, Clara comfortably stakes her claim to the Kaufman clan--including fellow pug Sophie. But when Kaufman and her husband decide to adopt Nicholas, a Siberian orphan, Clara feels the limelight slipping away. Wrapped in bureaucratic red tape, the adoption process involves not only months of paper pushing but a trip to Siberia that just about puts Clara over the top. Luckily, the persnickety pug accepts Nicholas into the fold and all is well in Clara's universe. As for the Kaufmans, well, indentured servitude to a pug isn't so bad. Kaufman's witty observations--combined with Clara's unforgettable antics--make for a memorable read. --Stefanie Hargreaves
Book Description
Pugs were dogs. Cute dogs, willful dogs, lovable to be sure, but I was a Human. I was in charge.
Then along came Clara, and all bets were off.
Once a pug owner, always a pug owner--or so thought Margo Kaufman, having shared her home with the lovable snub-faced imps since her college days. But it was not until the 1992 arrival of Clara--petite, imperious, whip-smart, and seductive--that Margo found what it meant to be a pug parent: that a pug could rule her life, and perhaps the world as well.
Clara, the Early Years is the hilarious story of how a glossy-black, twelve-pound package of canine energy took over Margo's heart and home while charming the pants off the rest of the world. From commandeering the dressing rooms at Saks (where a personal shopper offers Clara Evian in a cut-crystal bowl), to accompanying Margo on her first book tour, to an appearance on PrimeTime Live (where Margo plays a supporting role), the indomitable Clara establishes herself as a world-class personality, a star of the first order. But there is one event Clara cannot upstage, as Margo and her husband, Duke, travel to Russia to adopt an infant boy, and all of them learn new meanings for parent, family, and home.
Full of the kind of uproarious observations and brilliant insights that have won Margo Kaufman's books and commentary legions of loyal followers, Clara, the Early Years is a laugh-filled portrait of a singularly memorable pet.
Customer Reviews:
i owe so much to this book........2007-08-14
After stumbling upon this book in a tiny country bookshop, i read it in just a few days and fell deeply in love with pugs. i was completely charmed my the author's dogs, especially Clara, and soon i had rescued my own little black pug from a shelter. My pug goes with me everywhere, and as the author states, "is living proof that god has a sense of humor." these little dogs make me laugh every day, and this book will make you laugh on every page. Clara, Margo, and their adventures in LA will have you splitting your sides, and whether this is your first introduction to pugs, or your a long time lover of the breed, you will relate to and be touched by this book in unexpected ways.
Clara-Quick Read.......2007-07-08
I really enjoyed the first half of the book, after all we do have two black
pugs, but the second half was more about their adoption of a foreign baby and the pug story got left by the wayside.
never received item.......2006-11-10
I have been waiting since Sept. and I never received this item!
This book is great for pug lovers.......2006-10-26
but for those of us going through adoption, it was a bit cold. I actually shuddered when she spoke of her reluctance towards adopting a Chinese girl. I might be overly sensitive here, but it did strike me a bit racist. I also have a puggy whom I adore, but if there's any problem between her and my to be adopted daughter, I'm afraid that puggy will have to go live at my mum's. Anyone who isn't ready to put their human child first really isn't ready for parenthood (on the bright side, the author eventually did come around to putting her son first, but I've seen quite a few couples who were so wrapped up with their dogs that it's like the kid should be kept in a cage, and that's not right. This is why people like Caesar Milan exist to teach yuppies the importance of treating dogs like dogs and not spoiling them as children).
Overall, very interesting story. I'm sorry that the author lost her battle to cancer. Unlike one of the other posters, my first thought wasn't "Poor Clara", but "Poor Nickie" to have lost the only mum that he's ever really known. I'm sure that die hard dog (and especially pug) people will be mad at me for this review, but I'm not a dog person. I'm a person who happens to have a dog that I love. I agree that pugs are the only dogs cute enough to make one put up with the hassle of dog ownership (it is very costly, restricts much of your time and vacations, and there usually is something in the house to clean). I love my puggy to death, but she is absolutely my first and last dog. Hopefully, with this book, readers can get a sense of what it's really like to live with this breed (there's quite a tale about an expensive eye operation) so they can look before they leap into pug ownership.
Wonderful book for Pug lovers.......2006-08-25
If you don't own a Pug, you won't understand the humor. If you do, you're going to love this book!

Bond Markets, Analysis and Strategies (6th Edition)
ASIN: 1576601595 |
Book Description
First published in 1972, "Inside the Yield Book underwent more than twenty-five printings and remains a standard among bond market professionals. Used copies sell for more than $100 online. This new edition brings the still-relevant classic back into print with a new introduction by coauthor Martin L. Leibowitz, now chief investment officer at TIAA-CREF, and a new foreword by Henry Kaufman, former vice chairman of Salomon Brothers and one of the financial community's most-successful and most-respected figures. "Inside the Yield Book takes the bond investor behind the scenes and reveals in nontechnical terms the precise nature of bond yields and the ways in which they're often misunderstood and misused. It corrects many misconceptions about bond prices and yields as calculated in the standard Yield Book, and it provides a set of tools to aid in bond investment strategy that have made it the standard reference on bond math within the field of fixed income.
Customer Reviews:
Worth It - The Original.......2007-02-01
Yes, a lot of the concepts discussed here can be found in textbooks -- because this book originated those concepts. It remains the most concentrated discussion of bond analytics and trading available. It is a must for anyone contemplating entering the bond market as a professional, or working with bond professionals, or writing about them, or anything else. It is not for beginners -- or rather, it is work for beginners -- but it's in the professional language of fixed income. A head trader once told me this is the one book to read to understand bonds. There are many other worthy books, of course, but this is the one to start with, and it equips you to understand the others.
Old book.......2005-08-23
This book is quite old and deals with topics that can be found in lots of corporate finance books such as pv and fv. You can't see the contents of the book either. If you have or know of the Fabozzi book then get that instead. T
Insightful!.......2004-07-29
Sidney Homer and Martin L. Leibowitz, the authors of this slim volume, accomplish a tough feat. They utter a piece of rudimentary financial advice in one sentence and then launch into mind-bending explanations of the calculus that makes the rudiments true. Maybe that's why their 1972 classic has been in print for three decades. This updated version of the classic includes new forewords and some material that was cut from the original. Unless you're an experienced bond trader or a finance whiz, this primer isn't exactly easy reading. The authors waste little time on hand-holding. Still, it remains a complete look at its topic after all these years. We suggest this book to investors and traders who need a crash course - or a refresher course - in bond analysis.
