Book Description
This book explores the complexity of Cuban dance music and the webs that connect it, musically and historically, to other Caribbean music, to salsa, and to Latin Jazz. Establishing a scholarly foundation for the study of this music, Raul A. Fernandez introduces a set of terms, definitions, and empirical information that allow for a broader, more informed discussion. He presents fascinating musical biographies of prominent performers Cachao López, Mongo Santamaría, Armando Peraza, Patato Valdés, Francisco Aguabella, Cándido Camero, Chocolate Armenteros, and Celia Cruz. Based on interviews that the author conducted over a nine-year period, these profiles provide in-depth assessments of the musicians' substantial contributions to both Afro-Cuban music and Latin Jazz. In addition, Fernandez examines the links between Cuban music and other Caribbean musics; analyzes the musical and poetic foundations of the Cuban son form; addresses the salsa phenomenon; and develops the aesthetic construct of sabor, central to Cuban music.

Here are Groucho's improbable tales of true romance, narrated with his characteristic panache and illustrated with splendid New Yorker-esque cartoons.
Customer Reviews:
"MEMOIRS OF A MANGY LOVER" has the zippy title . . . .......2007-07-30
. . . but the better book of Groucho memoirs to begin with is GROUCHO AND ME, published in 1959, several years earlier than MEMOIRS OF A MANGY LOVER (1963). In each book Groucho Marx's unique wordplay, jaundiced viewpoint and occasional tracks into surrealism entertain. But in GROUCHO AND ME there is no "me" other than Groucho himself, and not only is his wit enteraining, we get a coherent family picture of the Marx parents and their five boisterous children, growing up in near-poverty in the early 20th Century in the Yorkville (upper East Side, but too upper ever to be posh) district of Manhattan. Later on Groucho touches -- with some skips and jumps but chronologically -- upon the other places the gradually more successful family troupe lived, from Chicago to Broadway to Hollywood, where they hit the celebrated American "instant stardom" after paying dues for nearly thirty years, most of it not in the first-class venues.
Now, I will not maintain that MEMOIRS OF A MANGY LOVER is "that's left-overs" in any derogatory way. Groucho's essays definitely entertain, but they are merely that, comic sketches or essays, usually arranged around the subject of Sex (Men chasing women, almost always), with occasional forays into politics and society, but only in an abstract way. Only the person with a flair for the artwork in this book and in Groucho's engaging but occasionally crotchety tone would put this book down as a product of the turn of the Sixties (as said, 1963).
The actual product I read -- the paperback edition from Da Capo Press -- has a printing error which is what led me to take my estimation from four stars down to three. The very end of the book is entitled "A Note on the Author by Groucho Marx," and it surely was meant to be short, but I can't say how short. My edition of MEMOIRS OF A MANGY LOVER -- the only edition available new that I know of -- snaps off at mid-sentence at the end of the page: turn the page and there is nothing there but the publisher's UPC code! Now, Groucho loves to talk about himself by talking around himself, so to speak; and he certainly had a talent for setting us up for puns, situational follies and quick turns of speech ("Last night I shot an elephant in my pajamas; how he got into my pajamas I'll never know.") But it wouldn't in any way be a Marxian touch for a book to end in mid-sentence. Beyond transferring data, are these things still proof-read these days for line intergrity and page coherence? We, the reader, deserve more for our $15.95 than 213 pages that end with what could only charitably be described as a production blunder. After all, in memoirs as well as Vaudeville, the closing act has to be strong.
Dry, Clever, Easy Read.......2007-05-12
I bought this book for my husband, who'd heard Groucho plug his book on a DVD of Dick Cavett interviews from the '70s. We had no idea Groucho had penned any books. It is a compilation of his views on Hollywood, relationships and life in general. Audible bellowing is heard throughout the house when he is reading this book. The cartoon illustrations by Leo Hershfield throughout in the book are very clever. A must read for all Groucho lovers.
DISAPOINTING.......2007-01-09
I bought the book after seeing an old Dick Cavette interview with Groucho, who has always been (Groucho, not Cavette) among my favorite comedians. The difference between the Groucho of film and TV sharpness of wit and rejoinder and the written word is an untenable one. If you are looking for the brilliance and quick-witted insanity of Woody Allen, buy Woody Allen, because Groucho and the written word are not the same as Groucho on film or in person. The quickness, the obsurdity are missing. Each punch line is drawn out and explained to death before delivery making it BORRRRRing. I read a few others of his books and so far, still no match for his live or scripted persona. Sorry Groucho fans., but 2.5 Stars
A Groucho is a Groucho is a Groucho.......2006-08-29
Groucho Marx is extremely funny and witty in this book not to mention his deep knowledge in many areas. He kept the irony and the lust for wordmingling throughout his life. The "Natural history of Love" is a chapter you must read! I never tire of this man!
His humor just doesn't translate well to the written word.......2005-07-08
Although there were a few laughs to be found, Groucho's personality just doesn't shine through on the printed page - without the ironic, self-effacing delivery he was so good at, most of this falls flat.
It was undoubtably written in a hurry and has a completely manic feel that overpowers the wit. It feels like I expected Steve Martin's novels to be like before I read them - a slalom of pun, dated jokes and double entendres you can read at breakneck speed.
I adore Groucho, but I think his stage presence was just too important to his humor for him to successfully write a book of this type.
One section I found interesting was the way he trapped a spiritualist into betraying herself... if the whole book would have been in this vein, it would have been much more satisfying.

Groucho at his best........1998-03-04
Groucho regales us with hilarity in intimate snippets from his life and his career. You don't have to be a Groucho fan to enjoy this collection. You simply just have to be alive.
Book Description
Tired of being beaten by an honest game of golf, self-proclaimed hacker Henry Beard figured that he didn't need a new swing--his game just needed a new set of rules. With
The Official Exceptions to the Rules of Golf, he created a bible for the sensible golfer who doesn't have time to lose.
You'll learn how to cope with pesky influences: missed shots and lost balls that wreak havoc on your score. Did you search unsuccessfully for your ball in the fairway? Don't panic. All you have to do is declare that it is a Ball Missing in Fairway But Obviously Not Lost (Exception #6) and drop another ball into the approximate spot where it
must have landed. What could make more sense?
Filled with
fair rules, this is the book that every practical golfer must have.
Customer Reviews:
Perhaps the funniest book on golf ever.......2005-08-30
The first time I encounted this book, I almost passed out laughing. It was during a golf trip to South Carolina. We passed the book around, taking turns reading the exceptions aloud. Nobody could make it straight through without bursting out in laughter. Any golfer with a sense of humor can appreciate this book. The exceptions are crafted in fine mock-USGA legalese. What's more, each exception is hilariously illustrated in the kind of line drawing common to all those instructional books we've all read along the way. A must have for your golf library.
Rules for the way Golf should be played........2002-01-03
I love Golf. It's the Rules I don't get. I mean none of us are Tiger Woods ... After 8 strokes just pick the ball up. Who cares who closest to the hole , Just putt the ball. That said ,The Official Exceptions to the Rules of Golf is a book made for the way I play golf. If more people follow these rules maybe I could get a round in in less than 3 hours!
Golf Legalise at its Best!.......2000-08-26
This book takes everything you do with your friends that breaks the rules of golf and makes it hilariously legal. Written just like the USGA's manual and in golf legalese its a must have for anyone that enjoys golf. It includes such highlights as the Agreement to Re-tee or "Mass Mulligan", Temporary Insanity or "John Daly", and other such rules as Nonchalant Putts or "Tap-tap-tap-in and Mittsie". If you want a book that will make you laugh about golf, this is it!!!
A funny, yet thought-provoking, look at the game.......1999-04-19
I really enjoyed this book and sent it to several of my friends (golfers all) to read. They all enjoyed as much as I did.
It's written in the same basic style as "The Official Rules of Golf", but they use rules that you and I play by. The scary thing is that I have seen every rule in this book actually applied on the golf course! Not by myself, of course, but by others.
If you enjoy golf, and have ever wanted to play a ball that you found in the rough that was "close enough" to the one you couldn't find, you'll get a kick out of this book.
very funny.......1998-10-18
the best part about this book is that every golfer has rationalized away many of the rules as this book does.

NYT large print easy crossword puzzles.......2007-05-07
These puzzles are NOT easy. I gave this book to my elderly mother in a nursing home to help pass the time and she cannot even start most of the puzzles.
It was a waste of money to buy this book.
Very enjoyable!.......2007-04-20
My Dad loves crosswords but they're always so small.. with this he doesn't need to wear his glasses. I see him at this book a lot! The puzzles really aren't that easy; they aren't the mind numbing challenges you'll get on Saturday and Sunday... more like Monday - Thursday's puzzles in the NY Times. Respectable levels of difficulty to keep you challenged yet able to complete. I DO find some he hasn't finished yet. My Dad's a pretty smart guy (Cornell grad) and I want to keep him that way... a great gift!
These books are GREAT!!.......2005-11-30
I bought a BUNCH of these New York Times Crossword books for my mom including this one. She was very ardent about working puzzles and felt they helped her maintain her mental powers. I felt they did. I wondered if the print was TOO large but then it gave her a large work space as she savored the puzzles and kept returning to them. I also gave her a subscription to crosswords she could receive from them in the mail. During a visit, I was pleased to see she and a friend working them together. They are the perfect gift for an aging person who might be physically disabled but likes to stay on top of their game. Great stimulation!
Book Description
Large word type.
Generously sized grids.
Easily seen numbers in the boxes.
125 Puzzles in every book.
No wonder these volumes have the seal of approval from the NAVH (National Association of Visually Handicapped).
They're challenging for the brain, but not hard on the eyes, so everyone can enjoy some puzzle fun. Crosswords can keep the mind sharp, but if your sight has weakened through the years, of if you're vision-impaired, you might have to strain to read both the words of the clues and the numbers in the boxes. That can be frustrating--and cause even the most determined puzzlers to put down the crossword. Not anymore, because every one of these large-print puzzles--125 crosswords in each collection--takes two pages, so they're easy to see and to fill out. And these cunning puzzles will really please, covering a variety of subjects and offering a real test of your word smarts.

Among the best for puzzle fans........2002-09-14
Crossword puzzles in this series are some of my mom's favorites.
They are wire-bound, making it easier to lay them flat and get down to business. But she would prefer they be laid out on single pages, and have larger type.
The puzzles are challenging without being overwhelming. These are roughly comparable to those found in the NY Times and LA Times, in both level of difficulty and in their design.
A pretty safe bet for fans, but no 5th star for the reasons above.
What's a five-letter word for five stars?.......2001-06-23
This series is easy to read and laid out conveniently. The puzzles are challenging without being insane. These are my mom's current favorites, and I would recommend them to fans of the crossword puzzles appearing in the NY Times or LA Times.
Book Description
When your business hits trouble, can you recognize the warning signs?
A century ago, coal miners brought canaries into the mines for danger warnings. At the first hint of poisonous methane gas, the little birds stopped chirping . . . and many miners were saved.
Your business faces invisible threats too. With equal doses of insight from Gary Sutton's experience as a hands-on, corporate turnaround CEO, and wisdom from his coal miner grandfather, this delightful volume helps you recognize trouble-before it's too late. In
Corporate Canaries, Sutton reveals the five "canary warnings" that are a sure sign of trouble.
Sutton's successes are measured not in millions but in
billions of dollars. He's breathed life into many flatlining organizations. The secret, he reveals, is recognizing the warning signs-and recognizing them
early! Once you empower everyone in your organization to become a "canary watcher," the success can be limitless.
With the wit of a storyteller and the credibility of a Wall Street hero, Gary Sutton spins that rare breed of business book: the kind you won't want to put down.

Business .......2007-01-15
Interesting read. You will definitely identify descriptions of people you work with or have worked with. Some good basic insights.
Corporate Canaries - A great Reality Check!.......2006-03-06
This was a very easy read and very insightful. There is much wisdom in the straight-forward teachings of the author and his grandfather. And it is wonderfully current! A must read for anyone interested in business acumen.
An easy read insurance policy for averting corporate disasters.......2006-01-11
This short book given its attempt to be simple in delivering five key lessons (plus wrap it around with some savvy homely anecdotes of his grandfather's mining experiences in pioneering times to fill out the book) is likely to leave most business book readers feeling short changed one suspects.
Sutton's turn around credentials and war stories underpin the five rules and as with many such books the five (which can be written in less than half a page) will not be new or unknown to most readers. Where the pinch comes is that Sutton's real theme based on the number of basket case companies he has been involved with, seems to be acceptance his book will not be immediately of use but once read should be kept in a bottom drawer for reference to when things start to go wrong and application of one of the lessons will he argues apply.
I would class it as an easy two hour maximum read - food for thought but not going to get you fired up as to what you might do new unless you are in the unfortunate position of being in a company that is actually heading for or going into tailspin.
Must Read For Managers.......2005-12-05
Corporate Canaries is one of the few business books I have come across and was better off after having read it. I have since changed my entire approach to managing and feel more secure as a result. I found it to be an easy read and it's not terribly long as well. Lots of great information and lessons packed into this little package!
The Importance to All Organizations of "Preventive Maintenance".......2005-10-20
At the outset, I acknowledge what is more a quibble than a complaint: I prefer the word "organization" to "corporation" or "company" (both of which, obviously, are organizations) while agreeing that just as canaries once protected coal miners, their human counterparts can now protect (your choice) (a) businesses, (b) corporations, (c) organizations, or (d) all of the above.
Whether or not Sutton was ever a coal miner is irrelevant. The focus should be on the five so-called "secrets" which he reveals in this book. (None is a head-snapper.) It would be a disservice, however, both to Sutton and to those who read this brief commentary to list the five out of context. They are best revealed within the book's narrative. The same is true of the "Big Secret" which Sutton shares in his final chapter. My advice is to go with the extended "canary" metaphor and allow Sutton to explain which of various business disasters are (key word) avoidable or whose impact can at least be reduced by rigorous preparation. Think of "canaries" as comprising a squadron of early-warning signs. It is imperative to know what they are, and, what each indicates. Those who ignore them do so at great peril.
Here are what I consider to be the key points which Sutton stresses, either by explication or implication:
1. Unlike their feathered counterparts, human canaries must be properly trained so that they will recognize and then report potential problems, dangers, etc. and do so in a timely manner.
2. Of equal importance, senior management must ensure that these "messengers" (a.k.a. whistle blowers) are encouraged and rewarded rather than punished.
3. All organizations have points of vulnerability. Everyone involved must be constantly alert to potential threats. Once one is identified, the appropriate person(s) must immediately be informed.
4. All organizations (regardless of size or nature) should have zero tolerance of criminal behavior, of course, but also of inappropriate behavior when in violation of what should be a clearly stated policy or procedure.
5. An organization's human canaries need not, indeed should not be limited to its employees. Customers, vendors, service providers, and "alumni" can also participate in an early-warning system.
Sutton makes clever and effective use of the extended "canary" metaphor and also of his grandfather who immigrated (at age 14) from Ballybunion, Ireland, to Harlan, Kentucky, and went to work in a coal mine. It is Grandpa Sutton who serves as the source of the five "secrets," each of which is revealed and then discussed within its own dedicated chapter. This use of what I call "Grandpa fables" may seem a gimmick but it's not. Sutton is too clever for that. Each of the "secrets" suggests lessons which can guide and inform sound business decisions.
In each of the first five chapters, Sutton identifies a common problem such as what usually happens when a company's profits sag and its management decides to cure this by adding revenue, any revenue. He lists five probable consequences. (Please see page 17.) Later in the same chapter, he responds to a separate but related question: What's the cure for a growing company with shrinking profits? He cites real-world examples. Offers specific suggestions. (Please see pages 23-26.) He concludes the chapter with a boxed summary of key points, "Your business is in trouble when..." Sutton follows a similar format in each of the other chapters: first a "Grandpa fable," then lesson(s) it reveals, relevant examples, probable consequences if the problem is not solved, a solution suggested, and then an appropriate variation on "Your business is in trouble when..." Given its length of only 126 pages, this is more a booklet than a book. Sutton's purpose is to focus his reader's attention on a limited number of "business disasters," and covers each with brevity and clarity.
I lament the fact that more often than not, those who sound an "alarm" of one kind or another are discouraged and even punished. Oh sure, some people are merely trouble-makers whose hidden agenda which may be unclear even to them. Fair enough. However, it is in the best interests of every organization (regardless of size or nature) to realize where its areas of vulnerability are most serious, to establish and support an "early warning system," and then require everyone involved to be alert to potential crises. Sutton offers some informative examples and some excellent suggestions as to how to do this.
