Scintillating And Amusing........2006-03-24
Shame on the people inside this book whose scandalous lives provide such fun reading! By reducing (or is it "elevating") to graphic recreations the misadventures of these celebrities and other assorted famous people who got caught in the act, the authors and artists here provide us with some wickedly delightful re-tellings of the juiciest scandals of the recent past. They're all here!
A big comic book!.......2001-10-05
I was TOTALLY disappointed with this book. When I received it, it was a big comic book! Nothing but comic strips throughout, which is not what I expected. If you feel like reading the comics, pick up your local newspaper, otherwise don't waste your time with this one!
Better Than the Enquirer!.......2000-04-23
"The Big Book of Scandal" from Paradox Press digs up all the hottest dirt from the 20th century! Find out that Clinton wasn't the first philandering president! And royal scandals didn't begin under Queen Elizabeth II either! Learn just how Hollywood became Babylon! You won't believe your eyes!
EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about it!.......1999-05-30
A riotous look at how the mighty fall: Greed, sex, perversion, and fraud. All the things what make people watch the news, and buy papers. The artwork and writing are top notch, as is the right amount of humor in each story.
Concise comic book on forgotten scandals.......1998-09-26
Vankin does a great job of concisely and completely dealing with long forgotten scandals, without too much crossover into his previous books (Conspiracies, Cover Ups and Crimes and 60 Greatest Conspiracies) and he does not pick easy targets. The Lockheed Scandal, the Wilson-Terpil Affair, several minor celebrity sin-fests, even something on tired old Watergate get comicized here. The book focusses on Hollywood, society, political and big business scandals, and so distinquishes itself from the other Big Books--on the unexplained, criminals, martyrs, urban legends, weirdos, losers and freaks. To coin a Vankinish observation, that list looks more like readers than topics the longer it gets. The first book in this series--from Factoid Books, a front for Paradox Press, which is an imprint of DC Comics--was the excellent Big Book of Conspiracies.

A humerous but accurate guide.......1999-11-04
As an Irish woman living in the US I found this an accurate if somewhat tongue-in- cheek guide to English as it is spoken on the Emerald Isle. It brought me right back home and I enjoyed every page. Laughing at ouselves is one of the best Irish traits and this book does it beautifully while still remaining accurate and providing useful information on phrases in common use in Ireland. It literally provides translations when necessary and explores the social context and understandings of the spoken word. An enjoyable and useful read for anyone who knows Ireland, native or visitor or anyone who ever hopes to go there .

Great Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-28
Look Clowns! - If you play chess, than you must read this book!
There are very few (Good) books on the subject of world champions!
Yea you might say BS - but I own over 1000 chess books and I put this one in the top 3%.
Behind the Scenes or a World Champion.......2002-12-04
I enjoyed this book immensely. I think Waitzkin does a good job of portraying Garry Kasparov's life both within the chess world and as a budding political figure and chess celebrity. This book does well in illustrating the hectic life that goes with being the strongest chess player in the world.
It also shows both his strengths and weaknesses in his personality, which project themselves onto the chessboard as well. We see Garry sometimes as both the confident champion who towers over opponents both on the chess board and physically. We also see an insecure young man who has been forced to face the world early in his life because of his success in chess.
In this book, you can perceive Waitzkin's paternal instincts kicking in, as he also has a son who is a world-class player. I think at times Garry looks to Fred Waitzkin as a father figure (or at least that's how the book makes it seem).
Waitzkin's text descriptions of the chess matches Garry plays are interesting. I think even those who do not play chess can appreciate the intensity of the games.
In all, I think this is a great book which shows us the personality of Garry Kasparov.
Close, but no cigar.......2002-07-10
I want to start by saying that I did enjoy this book, it's just that at the end it left me wanting a little bit more. Fred Waitzkin gained unprescedented access to the Champ, but seems a little overwhelmed by the input to give us any real sense of Kasparov. As observers we get the feeling, as Waitzkin himself writes, that GK is putting on a bit of a show for him. The tortured soul, the rebel.
The political machinations and details of Kasparov's brush with the pogrom in Baku are horrifying, but serve to explain the darker side of our hero. Where I think Waitzkin excels, as he does in SFBF, is in his portrayal of the circus that surrounds Kasparov, and chess in general. The Kamsky's, for example, whom can only be described as a family with 'issues'. Or the background of Manny Topol, a crime writer so caught up in the spirit of the World Championship, that he takes to reporting it.
But when it comes to the man himself, something is held back. It's as if the author is so frightened of those famous mood swings that it prevents him getting under GK's skin. In the book, Waitzkin tells us that he and Kasparov had many conversations without the tape running, discussing various off-the-cuff issues. The reader is left wondering whether these unrecorded moments would have provided the true insight into Kasparov. The missing link, so to speak, between the man we see on TV grimacing at IBM officials, and the one in the book playfully teasing his wife.
All-in-all this a book that should be read by anyone with an interest in the subject matter. The questions it leaves us with can only be answered when Garry Kimovich consents to another biography. Which, I hope, will be sooner rather than later. A lot has happened since this book was written, and it would be interesting to see what GK makes of it all. So, Mr Kasparov, if you're reading this, get scribbling! Please?
An inside look at Kasparov.......2002-04-15
This is not a great book, but it is a good book. Waitzkin gets to spend time with Kasparov before and during his last (5th) match with Karpov. There is a little biographical background about Kasparov scattered through the book. Most of the book concerns the time of the championship match. There is also a chapter on the Linares tournament that followed.
Some things I found interesting about the book: (1) the behind-the-scenes view of Kasparov's preparation for the match. (2) the political turmoil in the Soviet Union. Kasparov was working to end communism. (3) the descriptions of the games without moves and diagrams. (4) amusing anecdotes about the chess world. (5) a little bit of an update on Josh Waitzkin.
Warning: There are no game scores or analysis in this book. It is all talk. That was fine with me.
_Searching for Bobby Fischer_ was a much more interesting book to me. I recommend you read that one. If you love _Searching for Bobby Fischer_, you will like _Mortal Games_.
Average.......2001-05-18
The title is impressive, but that's about it. 'Turbulent Genius of Garry Kasparov'? Just where was the turbulency? Although Kasparov has personal problems, just like everyone else, I really didn't see a tourtured soul. The subtitle was misleading. The book read more like a second draft rather than a finished copy. I think the author was in a hurry to finish it before a deadline because his writing is not very impressive or convincing. Nevertheless, there are some fine moments, especially some sections of Kasparov's match with Karpov. But on the other hand, Garry is not the most intersting person in the world. One of the greatest chess players ever, but certainly not a man one would want to write and entire book about. The book faltered there; it was about a genius with an average personality.

Study Guide for Nelson/Quick's Organizational Behavior: Foundations, Reality and Challenges, 5th
ASIN: 0324224702 |
Book Description
Organizational Behavior provides the essential knowledge base and skill set so that future managers can harness the power of employees and teams to successfully navigate the changing world of work. Organizational behavior is the study of individual behavior and group dynamics in organizational settings. It focuses on timeless topics like motivation, leadership, teamwork, and communication. The text presents the opportunity to know concepts, ideas, and theories, and to practice skills, abilities, and behaviors to enhance the management of human behavior at work. To make the book more relevant to the learner, we have enhanced and further integrated the subtitle Foundations, Realities, Challenges into the theme in the 5th edition. The reader will see the tie to the subtitle with new feature titles: Foundations (new title: Science), Realities (new title: The Real World), and Challenges (new title: You) that have a more contemporary and personal feel. This theme will be integrated throughout the text and supplements making a true integrated learning package. In this new edition, six new focus companies have been selected. The authors use the focus companies so that learners can see how one company responds to different organizational situations. The focus companies are a variety of company types, for example, Whole Foods, Pixar, and Canine Companions. The authors also make sure to integrate four organizational behavior key themes into each chapter. These supporting themes are globalization, diversity, technology, and ethics. Sub-themes are designed to arm future managers with the tools they need to meet organizational challenges.

Customer Reviews:
Decent for learning.......2001-04-02
This book is very good. It is best suited for a student who is willing to put a good amount of time into his/her studying. The reason I say this is because it is very detailed, the diffenitions are very thorough and at times confusing, and there is a wide range of topics covered. It probably would not be good for a first year student unless they really want to learn the material which is a little dry at times. I thought that the opening cases in each chapter was a good way to tie the material to real life situations. Overall, this is a great tool for learning.
Organizational Behavior.......2001-04-02
We used this book as our textbook for Organizational Behavior this semester, and I found it to be extremely helpful. The writing is clear and concise, and the chapters are divided into four parts that make the distinction between individual and group study clear. There are plenty of graphs, tables, and diagrams, which illustrate the theories and statistics clearly. Most helpful, however, were the vocabulary definitions and the chapter summaries, which alleviated some of the pre-test stress.
Org. Beh. review from Kate Sirko in Harlaxton, ENGLAND.......2001-03-31
The book, Organizational Behavior: Foundations, Realities, and Challenges by Debra Nelson and James Quick is a good source for anyone interested in learning about the behavior in organizations. It involves everything from the general concepts of organizational behavior to the detailed structure and processes within an organization. The graphs and charts help the visual learners, such as myself to better understand important concepts and theories. After each chapter, the authors displays summaries for the learner to review important key terms and concepts before reading on to the next chapter. Unfortunately, the defintions of the majority of the terms throughout the book can be described in a simple, easy to understand way, but the authors fail to do so. On the other hand, various case studies fill the book for students to get involved in class discussions and debates. Overall, this book is a good source for professors and teachers to utilize in their classrooms.
Evan's Insight.......2001-03-31
This book provides a very clear, simple difinition of Organizational Behavior. The subheadings and bold words make it easy to understand what is necessary for comprehension. Also the current issues and up to date examples make it easy for the reader to engage in the material at hand. However, the books multiple use of models can be somewhat confusing. I also feel that the author uses over-detailed deffinitions of words that could be much easier defined. The chapters are somewhat lengthy and need to be more concise. The review sessions at the end of each chapter were very helpful and porvided good key's to what was neccessary for retention. If anyone doesn't know what Organizational Behavior is they should definaltely check out this book!
Evan's Insight.......2001-03-30
This book provides a very simple and clear layout of Organizational Behavior. The headings and bold words make it easy to understand what is important and necessary for comprehension. The current issues and real life examples also make this book user friendly. However, the multiple use of models in this book can be somewhat confusing. The chapters are somewhat lengthy packing a lot of informatin in. I also feel that this book gives over-detailed definitions of words that can be much simpler defined. Overall this book does a good job of engaging the reader in the material at hand. The review sessions at the end of each chapter were very helpful and a definate bonus to help the reader learn necessary information. If anyone is unclear of what organizational behavoir is then they sould deffinately check out this book.

A little too abstract.......2001-04-02
I thought that this book had some very good characteristics about it. It spelled out things very clear. It used diagrams and models very well. It also was fairly easy to follow. However, I think that this book tried to define too many definitions and general things that are too hard to define. It spent a lot of space on definitions of vauge things and was a little wordy at time. While it was not the best book I have ever read, it was not that bad.
Organizational Behavior (3rd Edition).......2001-03-31
This is a great textbook for anyone wishing to learn more about how people interact with their organization. It would be especially helpful in a classroom environment with an accompanying lecture.
There are three main aspects that I particularly liked about this book. First, it was easy to read in that it was well organized. The author arranged the chapters with headings and subheadings in order to keep relevant information together. Second, the reader had a clear view of what was expected to be learned from each chapter. This is because the objectives were clearly and concisely stated at the beginning of each chapter and there was a summary included at the end as well. Third, the author used a great deal of figures and graphs to reiterate the concepts. This is especially helpful for visual learners, like myself. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn more organizational behavior.
Org. Beh. review for Mgmt 377 at Harlaxton, ENGLAND.......2001-03-30
The book Organizational Behavior: Foundations, Realities, and Challenges by Debra Nelson is a good book to start from when students want to learn more about the insides of an organization or business. The book involves everything from the general, basic concepts to the in depth details of the organization's structures and processes. Throughout each chapter (18) the author incorporates real businesses and real life examples that are beneficial for the reader to learn and understand. The author also includes numerous diagrams which help those who may be visual learners, such as myself. A chapter summary after each chapter clarifies important key concepts and terms before heading on to the new material. Unfortunately, the author's definitions could be stated in a simpler, easier to understand way, but the author fails to do so. On the otherhand, the various case studies throughout the book lets one critically analyze and discuss with other students the answers to the questions at the end of each case study. Overall, this book is a good source for teachers and professors to utilize in their classrooms and enhance in classroom discussions.
Organizational Behavior.......2001-03-29
As a college student, I would recommend this textbook as a great guideline in regards to organizational behavior. The textbook, although a little lengthy, is easy to read and allows the reader to relate to the real life concepts. The book draws the reader in by providing self-surveys, graphs, and examples of successful popular companies.
The authors did a wonderful job of portraying the important points by highlighting key words and displaying bold definitions on the same page as the reading. I feel that the book could be improved by limiting the amount of reading, such as removing extra conversation and getting straight to the point rather than provide entertainment.
Organizational Behavior.......2001-03-26
This is a good text book for any organizational behavior class. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the various issues and problems that organizations deal with today. It is outlined well in that it first explains individual processes and behaviors, and then moves to interpersonal processes, and finally combines what you have read when it discusses organizational processes and structure. Throughout the text the Organizational Realities are helpful because they give personal accounts of the issues you have just read about. The six focus organizations discussed also bring a sense of reality to what you are learning. The reader is also provided with numerous tables and figures to help make what is written more clear. This was quite helpful most of the time, although I sometimes felt overwhelmed with all of the tables.
The challenges throughout the book give each reader the opportunity to learn more about himself/herself. I found this particularly helpful to understanding diffent things about myself, including what type of leader I am, and how I best deal with conflict, and what I am motivated by. I think it is important for a text book to not only teach about a particular subject, but also help the reader learn something about himself/herself. This book allowed me to do that. Because of this, I will be a more effective part of an organizational group or team when I am in the workforce someday.
