Book Description
It used to be that art glass was found only in cathedrals and churches. No longer. It's gradually made its way into homes, office spaces and other public places. Whether they are working with large sheets of structural glass, ornate panes of leaded glass, or multidimensional glass sculptures, the artists featured in these pages are exploring the use of glass in new and fascinating ways.
The Art of Glass presents many glass artists and the work they have created. View stunning architectural glass as well as beautiful glass murals in the following pages. Also included are the artist's techniques and design philosophies, in hopes that other glass artists can use this book as a reference tool and inspirational guide in their own work.

Side-splitting humor.......2002-06-04
"Why do they bury Enron senior executives at least 20 feed under ground? Deep down they are really good people." This is just one of the many hilarious jokes, shaggy dog stories, riddles, and side-splitting humor comprising Tim Barry's The Totally Unauthorized Enron Joke Book, and dedicated to making light of one of the worst financial scandals in modern American history. Undeniably funny, sometimes quite nasty, and always tipping its tongue in cheek to the disastrous behavior of Enron and its harsh consequences upon many ordinary people, The Totally Unauthorized Enron Joke Book is highly recommended for anyone who needs a good, solid laugh in these troubled times.

Between 1954 and 1967, Renoir was interviewed by such eminent film-makers and theorists as Jacques Rivette, Francois Truffaut, and Jacques Becker. The interviews were originally recorded and published in the distinguished Frnch film review Cahiers du Cinema, as well as shown on French television. They are an engaging account of Renoir's deep commitment to his chosen profession. Providing additional information on his ideas and theories on screen writing and directing, Renoir’s essays also include lively anecdotes of the genesis and evolution of each of his films. interesting look at Faure, superficial look at his works.......2006-07-31
the contents were summarized above, so I'm not going to repeat. I'm just going to say this is a great book if you want to learn about Faure's life, including his unhappy marriage, friendships with other artists and musicians, and students.
In my opinion, though, it's not such a great book if you want a lot of insight into the music. I wanted to read a really thorough discussion of the Requiem. It's not there. There's a chapter on the Requiem, but in fact it devotes a few pages to it and then it's back to Faure's life. The Requiem was my introduction to Faure and I really wanted a lot more than the brief information you can get anywhere: that he composed it after the deaths of his parents, that it has been called a "lullaby of death," that Faure described it as gentle as he was himself, and that it left the hellfire and damnation out.
I wanted to read about the human fear of death, and how Requiem masses are a Christian way of dealing with that (although Faure was evidently agnostic), how it fits in with past Requiems and other sacred music, how it differs from those, how his alterations were condemned by the Catholic church, the public's reaction to it, and critical reaction, some of which was quite negative. They objected to the fact that those slobs who haven't toiled in the vineyards long enough get eternal rest anyway.
In other words, I really wanted a look at the groundbreaking Requiem in context. The treatment was superficial. I found that relates to the author's treatment of Faure's music in general. In my opinion, gossip about his life gets too much emphasis (you learn he was unfaithful to his wife), while his music is not discussed in a way that made me feel I learned much. For example, I'd like to know a lot more about the influence of French culture on his music, and vice versa.
I'm still looking for the analysis of his music. Maybe another biography will have it?

Book Description
Jean-Michel Nectoux’s important new biography of Gabriel Fauré is the most comprehensive study yet of this central figure of fin de siecle France. It traces the composer’s life and the rich cultural milieu in which he lived and worked: the world also of Saint-Saens, Flaubert, Verlaine, Ravel, Debussy and Proust. A large part of the book considers Faure’s music, with particular emphasis on his adjustment to the musical language of the twentieth century and the formation of his late style. Works in all genres are discussed in detail. The book is the fruit of over twenty years’ research by Nectoux, the foremost authority on Gabriel Fauré. He has read more than 5000 previously unpublished letters and has unearthed more than 120 musical manuscripts in the process of writing this definitive study. The text is richly illustrated with rare photographs from Fauré’s lifetime and contains an extended chronology of the composer’s life, a complete chronological listing of all his own works and a detailed bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent guide on Gabriel Fauré........2000-05-04
When you read the book Gabriel Faure : a musical life you really get around the subject in every possible way. Not only is it obvious why Jean-Michel Nectoux is seen as the number one pro on the area, you also get the impression that he is quite capable in handling the subject in both a historic and musicologic manner. The book is highly recommentable. Also for foreign students who wish to approach the life and music of the wonderfull composer Gabriel Fauré without having to many problems with the english language. Book Description
This wide-ranging study of Gabriel Fauré and his contemporaries reclaims aesthetic categories crucial to French musical life in the early twentieth century. Its interrelated chapters treat the topics of sincerity, originality, novelty, self-renewal, homogeneity and religious belief in relation to Fauré’s music and ideas. Taking a broad view of cultural life during the composer’s lifetime and beyond, the book moves between specific details in Fauré’s music and related critical, literary and philosophical issues, ranging from Gounod to Boulez and from Proust to Valéry. Above all, the book connects abstract values to artistic choices and thus places such works as Fauré’s Requiem, La bonne chanson, La chanson d’Eve, L’horizon chimérique, and the chamber music in a new light.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book... goes beyond beginning bridge.......2007-08-17
I bought this book after playing bridge for about a month. I had taught myself mostly by using Bridge for Dummies. BFD is a great book and is more entry level. The Complete Idiot's Guide (CIG) is a great book on its own as well. For instance, BFD will talk about bidding game, but doesn't give point ranges for bidding game. CIG shows that clearly.
This book has great information about bidding, playing the hand and also more advanced techniques. You often see things on someone's bidding card like Splinter bids, or Drury. This books gives you these conventions as well as many more. It has a great explanation of cue bids and transfers.
What makes this book stand out is the humor involved and the bridgebits. It tells you much of the history, and little bits of trivia behind the topic at hand. Learning bridge can be dry (and this is coming from an accountant) and this book makes it much more interesting.
A Gerat Book for all bridge players---old and new!.......2007-05-28
This is the most interesting and informative bridge book I have ever read!
excellent introduction.......2007-05-01
this is the book that i learned bridge from, and it's the book that i strongly recommend anyone i know to read if they are thinking of taking up the game.
let's face it--a game is hard to learn from a book. almost any game, much less a game as complicated and complex as bridge! so you should not expect to be an expert just by reading this book. don't read the book in its entirety and then sit down at the bridge table.
read some, then play some, then repeat. if you don't have people who are willing to play very frequently, play online! (pogo.com is one site where beginners can be comfortable, although I'm sure there are others.)
if any book can help you, THIS book can help you learn bridge. but, bridge must ultimately be PLAYED to be learned, so don't forget to play as you go!
Bridge Made Truly Understandable.......2006-06-02
I am an avid chess player who has been told for years that I should play bridge. Well, I finally decided to give it a go. I began by attempting to read The ABC's of Bridge by Root. I felt that this book is anything but elementary and quickly became discouraged. I read some favorable reviews of Complete Idiot's Guide to Bridge and gave it a shot. I am 3/4 through the book in 10 days and can't say enough good things about it. It is clear, concise and packed full of excellent explanations, examples, and quizes. The authors take you by the hand and gently lead you through the nuances of this fascinating and challenging game. I have already put my preliminary knowledge to use playing on the internet. I have already experienced the deep satisfaction of making a 3NT (3 No Trump)bid as declarer using finesses and ducking. I have enjoyed setting the opponents several times using many of the techniques outlined in the book. I am well on my way to learning how to communicate well with my partner. If you are interested in learning about Bridge, I strongly urge you to buy this book now!
Not Really for Beginners (or Idiots).......2004-08-26
This book is filled with good information for players, especially the beginning chapters about bidding. The later chapters on the play of the hand are much shorter and sketchier. The book is not really written for novices. Mr. Medley's style is more like that of a newspaper bridge column, rushed and slangy, and, although the frequent sidebars make a valiant attempt at keeping up with his use of bridge jargon, he seems to have forgotten what it's like to be a beginner without step-by-step help at climbing the learning curve. Eddie Kantar's funny and helpful "Bridge for Dummies" is a much better introduction.
But if this is, say, your third bridge book (as it was mine) and you are willing to fine-tooth-comb it a bit, you'll learn a lot.
By the way, isn't it interesting how the marketeers assume that, if we want to learn something new, we either are or feel like "dummies" or "idiots"?

Customer Reviews:
A bit hard to understand.......2004-12-02
I had an older edition of this book, which wasn't very helpful, so I bought the new one hoping it was an improvement, but came away rather disappointed because, for an instructional manual, this one is hard to follow. Apparently, the authors have been in the valuation business for a long time, but it's not always easy to translate experience effectively into words. For most, this is a how-to project with potentially big consequences, so the instructions should be more clear than this. I liked "Unlocking the Value of Your Business" as an alternative. Once I read that book, I understood better what these guys were talking about.
This is a Terrific Resource for Practitioners Not Investors.......2004-09-16
I am a lawyer who has tried valuation cases and this book is a terrific resource for valuation experts and attorneys. I used it to defend and to attack witnesses. It is respected. It is used at the Federal Judicial Center as training for judges on these issues. It is not at all appropriate for people who are trying to value companies for investment purposes.
Super.......2003-01-08
This book, guide, reference, ... or what ever you name it. is essential for all business, financial and investment guides.
An Excellent Private Equity Valuation Primer.......2002-04-08
I have found Mr. Pratt's book to be an outstanding and practical general reference guide to valuing privately-held businesses. Due to the book's breadth of material and balanced focus on both the science and art of valuation, I have found "Valuing A Business" to be an excellent professional reference for anyone entering the field of business valuation. I highly recommend it.
In addition to the common "science side" valuation techniques, issues, and approaches that are found in many valuation textbooks, Pratt provides unique, valuable insight into the "art side" of valuation. The book also includes real life project execution considerations for litigation support, expert witness testimony, and taxation. "Valuing A Business" offers solid information to assist a practitioner in building a quality framework for conducting a comprehensive private company valuation.
Good technique, directed at the professional practitioner.......2001-10-18
I take issue with the reviewer who suggested that Tom Copeland/McKinsey's book "Valuation" is better than this one or is more directed at valuaing big businesses. ... On the other hand, it should be said that valuation techniques do not differ between big companies and small companies (especially if big/small companies are publically traded). Valuation techniques vary depending on (a) what sort of asset is being valued (public equity, vs. private equity, vs. business assets as a whole, etc) and (b) why valuation is being done (for M&A, litigation between business partners, divorce, ESOPs, for equity investment/divestment). If an investor is valuing a $50 Billion public company and a $50 million public company, the technique used for both is (probably) the same.
If anything, this book does an excellent job in reminding us of the diversity of valuation techniques in use, and the diversity of reasons for doing valuations. Given the frequency with which privately held companies are bought, one would think that knowing how to value companies whose stock is not publically traded is useful for general businesspeople, not just accountants and attorneys. But if you absolutely insist that you just want to know how to value publically traded companies and don't give a hoot for calculating "private equity discounts" or "minority shareholder discounts", then I would recommend Aswath Damodaran's books "Damodaran on Valuation", "The Dark Side of Valuation" or "Investment Valuation". Damodaran, professor of Finance at NYU, actually uses the same techniques taught here, but applied to public equity investing and with different names (for example, what is called the "Market approach" here is just what Damodaran calls "relative valuation" in a different context).
