From The Inside Flap:.......2006-02-20
This handsomely illustrated book presents the work of the finest living practitioners of the graceful and appealing art of painting and sculpting birds. Since 1976 the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum has been holding an annual exhibit of contemporary art devoted to birds. The endeavor has met with universal praise. It has served to raise the standards of wildlife art while leading to its acceptance by a widening public. BIRDS IN ART: THE MASTERS celebrates the artistic vision of the fourteen artists who have received the Master Wildlife Artist award. They are the very best in their field. They include Roger Tory Peterson, J. Fenwick Lansdowne, and Robert Bateman.

How to carve wildfowl book 2.......2002-03-20
This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in carving or collecting wildfowl carvings. The book arrived within a few days and it was neatly and safely packaged to prevent damage. The book exceeded my expectations.
Excellent resource.......1998-11-29
I bought this book as a gift for my father, who has been carving decoys for many years and taking classes with some of the local experts around the Chesapeake Bay area. When he brought the book to class the instructor had to borrow it for a week to read! It is not necessarily a book for beginners, but if you are serious about the craft, it is a top notch reference book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent collection of classic tales.......2005-07-10
One of DC's earlier archive editions, this volume reprints the entirety of All-Star Comics #3-6, the first four issues of the Justice Society of America. Considering the high cost of the individual issues, this is a fantastic affordable way to own the contents of those issues. Each issue is broken up into linked individual adventures of the various members of the Justice Society, giving these characters an extra showcase outside of the titles they had their own adventures in. The overall package is very attractive and great care is evident in the reproduction. A must-own for fans of the Golden Age of comics and the Justice Society.
worth it.......2005-03-04
i love this collection!!! it reprints classic stories of the justice society!!! the flash, the atom, the spectre, dr. fate, the sandman, the green lantern, hawkman, johny thunder and the hourman. great art great stories never reprinted material you should buy this.
Excellent Reproduction, Excellent Classic Team Stories.......2002-01-10
I never grew up durring the Golden Age. And you don't need to be to enjoy this book. This book reprints All-Star JSA issues #3 - 6. The book features the VERY first Super Hero Team! The stories are corney, sure, but it's still fun and entertaining to this day. Like one reviewer said, if you get one Archive you'll want to get them all - it's that good! Comic fans will love this book, and it's other volumes.
This story features interesting characters, like Spectre, Dr. Fate, Golden Age Flash and Green Lantern, Hour Man, The Atom, Hawkman (also features Hawk girl in one issue) and my favorites Sandman and Jonny Thunder!!! All are classic heros that even appear today, like in Comics such as "Spectre" (Who is Hal Jordon now) and "JSA" written by Awsome Writer Goeff Johns.
Buy this book if your a comic fan! Even if you aren't into comics, it's a great place to start and learn. (May as well Start at the begining of Comic Histroy)
Golden Age Comes Alive!.......2000-05-02
Anyone who is a true fan of comic books will truly appreciate this hard cover edition of the first Super Hero Team--The Justice Society of America. This team of heroes set the stage of their silver age counterparts, as well as, the Justice League of America. I am glad DC has put together these Archive Editions as an easy way to capture hard to find and out of print titles. You could easily spend thousands of dollars and long hours at comic conventions to buy back issues. I for one am hooked. Once you buy one, you'll want to buy the whole set.

A great "keeper"........2007-03-23
I love this book and have for nearly 50 years. I try to give a copy to my friends on the first "special" day (birthday, etc.) after we meet. It is so adorable and everyone I've treated with this book say they love it. They also share it with others. It is so unusual these days to get a giggle on every page and laugh out loud in spite of yourself.
Copies have been difficult to find and my latest were not printed on good paper but I'll take them anyway I can get them. Thanks
Hallelujah and God Forbid!.......2007-01-05
O YE JIGS & JULEPS is the collected essays of Virginia Cary Hudson, who by all available accounts wrote them when ten years old in 1904; discovered in an attic trunk, they were published in 1962--and the book became a surprise bestseller. Although it has fallen in and out of print over the years, it has never been entirely forgotten and has met with the occasional reprint over the years.
Most of Hudson's writings are focused, either directly or in a roundabout way, on her upbringing in the American Episcopal Church of her era. (When a relative describes the Episcopals as "stuck up" Hudson, with a child's talent for absolutes, takes the phrase literally.) At the same time, she does not stint the social foibles of her day, and her mix of innocence and savvy causes her mother to have one "Irish fit" after another, all of them described with remarkable pith. "And when my mother got home got home from Middleton on the trolley car," she writes, "she said plenty. And when I thought she said everything there was to say, she still had plenty left."
Even though Virginia's writings encompass only ten essays and run to a mere fifty pages (including line drawings), she covers a lot of ground. Church Sacraments, especially Baptism, get the once over; she instructs us on how to behave in church and what to do when the Baptists next door sing too loud; she tells how to get your garden weeded by giving a party; and lectures on personal appearance, not to mention the Great Wall of China. Much of it is laugh-out-loud funny, all of it is charming, and although it is presently out of print again it is well worth seeking out. Recommended.

Any time you need cheering up..........2002-11-01
Virginia's essays can do it. My husband first learned of this book when a theologian read excerpts of it in a class. He bought it for me and it immediately became a treasure to us both. Little Miss Hudson will have you in stitches as often as you open the book. We have given "O Ye Jigs" as a gift more than once and will again. Our favorite part is 'Sacraments' (Poor little Melvin).
The Best Yet!.......2000-10-25
I'm 13 years old and my reading teacher, Mrs. Hunley, is reading us essays in the book. The book is hilarious and great. We haven't finished it yet, but I'm looking forward to hearing more of Virginia's stories. Some of the boys in my class are jocks and they don't want anything to do with reading, I'd be surprised if they've ever read a whole book in their lives, but anyways, even they look forward to reading about Virginia. The whole class laughs non-stop through her essays. I would recommend this book to anyone!
A Must Read.......2000-08-29
I first read Oh Ye Jigs and Juleps as a high school senior, 35 years ago. Every time I can find it, I buy every copy I can get my hands on and give them as gifts. It should be "required reading" for EVERYone... not "just for Christians." Hopefully, it will be printed again soon.

Columbia did 500+ two-reel shorts 1933-58, with Hollywood's finest comics: history, production discussion, critiques. (Three Stooges, Andy Clyde, Buster Keaton, Harry Langdon, Charley Chase, others.) Filmographies of all 526 two-reelers: credits, date, synopsis.
Customer Reviews:
A timely reissue of a fine film book.......1999-01-26
The original 1986 publication is now available in a popular-priced, handy paperback edition. Many movie fans are familiar with the Columbia comedy shorts of The Three Stooges, but many of Hollywood's most popular comedians (Buster Keaton, Charley Chase, Andy Clyde, Harry Langdon, etc.) also appeared in Columbia's two-reel comedies. The studio's quarter-century of short-subject production is accurately and completely chronicled by the authors. Their scholarship is exemplary, especially in the filmographies. The writing is intelligent and absorbing, and there are dozens of rare photographs. The book can be enjoyed and consulted any number of times.

Customer Reviews:
Pricey for little.......2006-07-11
Beginner/Intermediate level book. What little there is is ok.
The content is rather skimpy for the price. Most bridge books that cost twice as much give you 3-4 times the material.
Better to buy a book liek Card Play Made Easy.
Save your money.......2006-03-25
Its ok, but its very short, you will get through it in a couple of hours. It seems like Marty Bergens short paper backs are just churned out without much substance. When you peel away the table of contents and advertising the book is about 48 pages long.
I do not think I got my monies worth.
Customer Reviews:
Poor prose, narrow view, opinions mixed with facts, some errors and nothing new.......2006-09-03
This book is a good idea, and presents relatively useful information in a straightforward fashion. BUT: the book as a whole suffers from some elements that make this a mediocre choice. A strong candidate in a long tradition of making business and finance texts unreadable, ruining the subject for millions.
1. Poor prose: the writing is mediocre and after a while gets tedious and annoying. As an example, on pg. 91, a paragraph leads off saying (paraphrased and condensed) 'there are three important additional factors, x, y and z. X must be considered so that (blah blah blah). It is equally important to understand Y. Finally, it is important to be aware of Z.' In other words, these things are important, and you know this, because you have been told they are important through the technique of repetition of the word important. This is just plain poor writing.
There are also pompous quotes at the end of each chapter, which have little relation to the text and no effect save to annoy the reader. They seem to repeat the theme of liberty; now, liberty is a Good Thing, but the connection to a real estate text is somewhat tenuous - and more to the point, it's obnoxious. (Example: at the end of Chapter 3, "Eight Ways to Locate Rental Houses for the Smart Investor", John Quincy Adams is quoted as saying "Posterity - you will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it." Wha'?)
2. Narrowness and facts/opinions: pg. 27, "The type of location best suited for rental houses is typically in a neighorhood that is between 10 and 35 years old." Ummm, would this hold true in, say, Boston? New York? New Orleans? Paris? (Okay, it's a book for a U.S. audience, but still). In general, the "suggested approaches" seem targeted at those considering investing in rental properties in mid-sized cities with massive urban sprawl. In particular, there is a strong and clear bias to investing in single-family dwellings, a bias that is both potentially dangerous and certainly open to debate. (Granted, the author does point out that this is a generalization, but this qualification is not very convincing.)
3. Errors: while the errors I have found are not serious, they worry me when I read a business/finance text. For example, on pg. 75, Berges explains the debt servicing ratio and states that "a value of 1.0 percent means that there is exactly enough cash to make the loan payment." Actually, 1.0 percent means that there is 1/100th of the cash needed to make the loan payment - a typo, to be sure, but that's why texts are edited prior to publication. The box on the same page breaking down the formula is also simply wrong.
I should note that the entire section in the Chapter "Financial Analysis of Rental Properties" makes use of an almost unreadable print-out of an Excel worksheet (that I have not found available on the web, although I admit I could eventually read no more). Since some of the text following this is based on the worksheet, it makes it harder to get through this section and the subject just does not come alive.
4. Nothing new: there are other texts that explain finance and real estate much better, and put them in context, with clearer examples and less painful writing.
Keep looking.
Great book!.......2005-09-05
I'm surprised at the lackluster reviews of this book. I found it outstanding and learned a great deal about how to acquire the best properties and make them as profitable s possible.
Utterly worthless.......2005-08-13
I can only imagine that this book was written for the sole purpose of making money off of poor schmucks, like myself, who bought it thinking it might have some useful information. It doesn't, save your money and look elsewhere on the given subject. Example information conveyed in the book includes, in essence, such helpful hints as don't buy rental homes next to slums or trash-dumps.
Not super helpful for a beginer...an ok book.......2005-04-10
This book was not as easy for a me to understand as other books I have read. He goes really into detail on showing how to make sure your cash flow and the property is one you want to buy, but he doesn't do much to show or tell you how to buy homes as I had hoped.
Another Great Book from Steve Berges.......2005-02-12
I have read all of the real estate investing books by Steve Berges, in addition to many others by other authors. I have found that Mr. Berges is by far the best author on real estate investment, period. If you haven't read "The Complete Guide to Buying and Selling Apartment Buildings," then you are doing it wrong.
Mr. Berges' basic approach is to teach you what to look for, and how to analyze property before you buy it. With this approach you will know how much money you will make in the end, before you have even made the down payment. Berges explains this approach very thoroughly and effectively, with an informal, anecdotal style that makes you feel like you are discussing real estate methods with your rich uncle.
"The Complete Guide to Investing in Rental Properties" is Berges' newest book. Having read all of his previous books, I found this one to be a little redundant. The first half of the book is a review of infomation found in more detail in his other books, and even includes excerpts from his other work. But that allows the book to stand on its own. The rest of the book is all new, and pure gold. Mr. Berges discusses his techniques for managing property and tenants, increasing property value and reducing expenses.
If you were only allowed to read one book on real estate investing, "The Complete Guide to Investing in Rental Properties" would be it. However, then you would be missing out on all of Steve Berges' other books. On the other hand, were you to have read the others, in my opinion you would not only have all the information needed to begin a successful real estate venture, you would also have a significant advantage over all those investors out there who have not read his work.
Given that this has been such a raving review, I feel I should head off assumptions that I work for Steve Berges, or the publisher, or even know him. I do not. I have only read many books on real estate investing, and I have come to recognize Mr. Berges' books to be the champions of them all. You just have to read one to know what I am talking about.
