Book Description
In recent years, the computer has become an all-important cartoonist's medium, and this practical, hands-on guide shows how to create professional quality digital cartoons. The author opens with advice on setting up a digital studio and gives tips on how to work smart, work fast, and keep operating expenses low. He follows with advice on transform-ing good graphic ideas into finished work, training the imagination, striving for original-ity, and developing the technique of self-criticism. Other details covered include planning and writing scripts, writing captions for single-frame cartoons, storyboarding, making preliminary sketches on the computer, and mastering line art, color, and 3D techniques. Finally, he offers detailed advice on how to get one's digital art seen by potential buyers, how to get it published, how to set fees, and the importance of time management and meeting deadlines. Here is a textbook and reference volume for today's cartoonist, with information and advice that will remain pertinent for years to come. Approximately 400 illustrations in both color and black and white.
Customer Reviews:
what happened to the selling?.......2006-06-01
I subtracted one star because the author heavily favors drawing with pencil and paper and then scanning the image into the computer and going digital from there. You can scan the Mona Lisa into the computer, that doesn't make Da Vinci a digital artist. I felt it also gave short shrift to vector based art, as a result of the paper & pencil origins.
From four stars, I cut the rating in half, because there is only half a book here. If it had been called "How to Draw Digital Cartoons" I would have left it at four stars, but the title says "and Sell" so I expected something about selling. In fact, that's really what I was looking for in this book. There are only three pages about making money, and over 1 page of that is graphics. The bottom line, apparently, is that you won't make money with digital cartoons. Fine. But if that's the case, then the title is very misleading.
Great overall introduction.......2005-08-22
We first checked this book out of the library (I have an 11-yr-old would-be cartoonist son), then ended up buying our own copy. Great introduction to different cartooning styles, composition, and a better hands-on description of using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator than you find in the owner's manuals! Nice layout, colorful, thick, glossy pages. Beautiful book and useful reference.
Beautiful, fascinating and useful!.......2004-09-26
This is an excellent look at the multi-faceted concerns of those interested in digital cartoons and comics, from inspiration to drawing, page layout, computer techniques, character design, coloring and publishing, both on the web and in print.
It's wide-ranging enough to touch on almost all aspects of the creation of digital comics, but focused enough to deal with specific techniques.
A fascinating and highly useful book that's also chock-full of beautiful digital art by many of the leading digital cartoonists and comics artists.

Hilarious to the Max.......2007-02-17
I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.
The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.
May the Force Be With Us, Please. Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-20
I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.
Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.
Loved It.......2003-10-01
the only problem i had with this book is that it took me no time to read through it. very funny, wish it had lasted longer. a must read.
outstanding........2003-04-17
A kid thinks that they are immortal. And will try this. So thekid in us, is in the sled enjoyingthis.
One Great Book.......2003-04-05
I absolutely loved this book. It was absolutely hilarious. With Jason seeing Jurrassic Park, The Fox family going on vacation, and Jason and Marcus's 83 story Comic Book Store this book was great. 5 Stars!

Wonderful!.......2007-05-18
Great book, worth the price a hundred times. Great to read more exploits of Bean! Just like the TV show! Recomended! Some parts will laugh you to death such as:
Smashed bugs in the book
Police reports
Much much more!
Good.......2006-12-16
Funny, but I expected it to be like a book, and there were just some andom notes for every day.
Great.......2005-08-04
This book is hilarious and makes for simple, entertaining reading. It consists of a diary in which Mr. Bean records his various escapades (in his untidy scrawl) and keeps his letters and newspaper clippings. It contains quite a few references to the episodes themselves, and it's necessary to read it more than once to appreciate the full humour value. I recommend this book to all fans of Mr. Bean.
Absolutely Hilarious.......2004-06-16
Mr Bean aka Rowan Atkinson is one of my favorite comedian. He manages to crack you up without resorting to low down slapstick humor. The book is a must-read for Mr Bean fans, and for those of you who have yet to see his TV shows (way better than the movie), I highly recommend this book. It is guaranteed to give me tummyaches from laughing too hard.
Hate the TV show? You still might like the book.......2003-09-21
Even Mr. Bean's most enthusiastic fans will have to agree that he can be really gross sometimes. For those of us who wish we'd never seen him try to stop his ears with someone else's used chewing gum, he's a lot easier to take in print than on video, just as weird but much less nauseating. I think he's funnier, too. It's kind of like a radio play: What you fill in with your imagination can be funnier than what they show you.

FLAWED, but mostly incomplete.........2003-08-25
This guide isn't a guide at all. So many missing links. Thank God for Mick Martin & Marsha Porter for filling in the blanks, their "DVD & VIDEO GUIDES" are much better. It's rare that I don't find the films I'm looking for with Mick & Marsha. With this guide I only find something like 5 of 10 films. Mick Martin & Marsha Porter 9 of 10. Perhaps I'm just spoiled by them, because I see by the other reviews here that this guide was informative to some. Maybe its the only one they've read. One flaw example: Look at actress Winona Ryder's filmograghy, it has Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow listed. Ryder is not in that film (not even in a cameo).
Not comprehensive, but better than the others.......2002-06-29
I went to the bookstore intending to buy a different movie guide (woof! lol), but it wasn't in stock at the time, so I bought the TLA 2000-2001 guide. Over the past year and more I have had the opportunity to compare the TLA with Videohound. I have been impressed enough with TLA to buy the 2002-2003 edition. Although Videohound may be more comprehensive, there's something to be said for selectivity. Yes, there have been films I haven't found in TLA, but TLA will also tend to have a more thorough and sophisticated review. I've only been let down once with a TLA review I didn't agree with (i.e. it was positive and my opinion of the film was negative), less often than with other guides. It also has good indexes at the back, and the paperstock itself is of much higher quality (which is important for me... I don't like my movie guides looking and feeling like phone books after a few months of use).
For specialty guides (like cult and war movies), Videohound puts out good stuff. Otherwise I prefer TLA!
Excellent Film Guide.......2002-03-12
This *is* the guide for discerning film lovers. It avoids the encylopeadic trend of other guides, so you don't have to wade through thousands of movies that are simply not worth your time. It's not a snobish foreign or indie only guide, nor is it enslaved to Hollywood. That is, it has it all: serious art and serious fun. The reviews are very well written, witty, and often cite broad styles or a director's influences which allows readers to further develop their own preferences and interests. Inevitably, you will disagree with a review here and there, but this guide is by far the best I've come across. Highly recommended.
SOLID GUIDE FOR FANS OF FOREIGN
< INDY AND HOLLYWOOD.......2001-11-08
This is a fine guide book to home video, with an accent on foreign and indy favorites. The reviews are well-informed and well-written. There is also many small and unknown film covered. Hats off to Bleiler and company. TLA Video is known in the Philly area for their repertory history and interesting video stores, and this book reflects their reputation.

A very different kind of movie guide..........2004-06-26
I got into movie-review books when wanting to get reviews from professional critics on movies of my favorite genere; horror/ slasher films. I first picked up Roger Eberts and Lenord Maltins books. Un-surprisingly, as most critics seem to despise any kind of slasher pic, they panned pretty much every movie I looked up. Frustrated by thier harshness, I next turned to the Video & DVD guide. I was pleastntly surprised. Whoever reviewed these movies gave films like, for example, "Halloween 2" and "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter", three stars!, while Ebert and Multin gave them below two, probably just because they were gory, and they consider that a big no-no for any horror movie to be good. Most of the horror/ slasher pics. in this book got two stars or more (except for those truly un-deserving ones). It's as tho the critic were looking through a horror-fans perspective! I defintely reccomend this book!
An unreliable guide........2003-07-14
When you are a big movie fan it's a good thing to get yourself a reference book to keep track of all things film. Although this particular volume is not bad to have around it has some major flaws, especially in the review department. There seems to be no continuity from review to review. Because there are so many different people writing reviews there is no general opinion of what makes a good movie. How is it possible that the same source gives a thrown together mess like ARMAGEDDON three and a half stars and a superb satire like FIGHT CLUB a 'turkey' rating? The review of FIGHT CLUB is so far off it really seems that the author didn't even see the movie. There are more examples as well that induce some head scratching. With a guide such as this you need to have a kind of general opinion that gives you an idea of when to buy into the reviewers advice. I've bought the last five or six volumes of this guide and found the VIDEOHOUND GOLDEN MOVIE RETREIVER book to be far superior and chock full of extras that, over the years, this book didn't have or had to get rid of to put in more questionable movie reviews. I've actually rented movies based on highly recommended reviews within the VIDEO AND DVD GUIDE that were bad calls. Not bad if kept in the bathroom for quick reference but definitely not for coffee table presentation if you are a hard core movie buff.
Great guide.......2003-04-23
What I have always liked about VDG/VMG is the fact that you can find movies by actors. This is something other books dont offer.
Almost Perfect.......2003-02-27
The only reason this didn't get 5 stars is because it does not have as many movies as "Maltin's Movie and Video Guide." I buy "Maltin's Move and Video Guide" on odd numbered years and "Video and DVD Guide" by Martin and Porter on even numbered years. Maltin has the best, most comprehensive movie reviews and Martin and Porter have the best cast index. Between the two you can find everything you could possibly want!
5 STARS !!!.......2003-01-25
I've been turning to Martin and Porter for around 13 years now and all I can say is that I eagerly await each year's edition. This year sees the Video Movie Guide (VMG) renamed the Video & DVD Guide (VDG). When I first went looking for a paperback movie guide to keep on my desk, I spent a lot of time checking out the competition and found them all lacking in some area. Leonard (who is quite film savvy) and I just didn't see eye-to-eye at all. If he didn't like a certain genre, those type of movies didn't get a fair shake. Many of the others were geared for family viewing (which is fine but I've been there, done that, and have moved on to encompass a wide range of films). The only one that I found to be fair and have the technical info (color or b&w, running time, rating, subtitles, year released, cast, director, etc.) that I was looking for was VDG. I've watched the book's format change (for the better) over the years (I happily don't have to figure out the genre of the movie before looking it up anymore). After reading some of the other reviews, I understand the frustration of not having all of an actor's or director's films listed but if you read the Foreward/Introducton to VDG you'd know that only available (for rent and/or purchase) titles are covered (at the time of publication). This is why I've kept my old VMGs for reference. Nobody seems to mind when a book or DVD has an incomplete filmography on an actor or director so what's the beef?
Customer Reviews:
Not a Videohound review.......2005-04-24
Whoever thinks this book offers adequate review must have as little understanding of the movies watched as these reviewers, or like these reviewers, does not actually watch movies. I can forgive a reviewer not having the same opinion as myself but at least it should be an educated opinion. Time after time the facts of the movies are incorrect, indicating they were not watched or only scanned. Also, the lack of a depth of understanding of cinema history, the lack of knowledge of a director's art and repertoire, etc. is unforgiveable. A good example is Bertolucci's The Spider's Strategem where the facts of the movie are given incorrectly. This guide is a good reference to the existence of a video, for lists of the actors and their movies, lists of directors and their movies, etc., but its reviews are sketchy, ill informed, and unsophisticated.
WHAT'S THE POINT?/WELL, YEAH..........2005-03-25
I have no idea why anyone would want a book that critiques movies. The reference guide(s) have been useful to me a few times, but not enough to make this book worth my time. Every **** film I have tried to watch -- even the ones of modern day -- are the most boring films I've ever seen! The only ones that aren't boring are E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial & a many of the Disney films they rated such...some of the most compelling films I've ever seen -- i.e.: Batman Returns, Clockers -- are treated mediocre and given far less attention than they're worth. Some of my personal favorites -- i.e.: Ghostbusters I & II, Bringing Out The Dead, Greg Araki's nowhere -- are nit picked apart to reveal their imperfections while films like Psycho (1960) & Howard's End seemingly can not be proven to be worthy within their review; the review for Psycho (1960) is also contradicted by the review of the re-make (they say Psycho is tame by today's standards...what standards are they talking about???; ** films like CANDYMAN and LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT perhaps???). I may be just plain blind, but it seems to me as if Videohound just tells people what they already know: "these are classics, and those are not". And what is a classic anyway? How many people who don't spend all day with their grandparents can actually say they LIKED the original Psycho? THE FILM IS ONLY 45 YEARS OLD!!! That may seem like a long time to this fast-food society where anything beyond 5 minutes is "old", but considering how history weaves through time, 45 years is NOTHING!!! It's not even a full lifetime of a soliatary human, let alone enough time to see if people will be coming back to this or that film time and time again through the centuries! Nontheless, it's a happy medium between Leonard Maltin's whimsical opinion and Roger Ebert's overly-generous ratings. And, if you actually care about movies enough to research them but can't remember simple details about them such as who directed them or who starred in them, this book is a good tool to have around...and for the price it's going for on Amazon.com at least it's not un-worth it; I, however, would like to learn about movies the old-fashioned way: WATCHING them.
Unfortunately, too big for the wrong purpose.......2003-09-10
Very interesting book in it's first half: a bit more than 800 pages of about 1600. The reviews are well presented and easier to read than the competition in the pocket book format. Interesting style of writing. Unfortunately, after the reviews, they spend much too many pages in making all kinds of subcategories: let's say there is bear in a movie they'll list all the movies with bears and so on... for hundreds of spoiled pages. So the book ends up being huge like a phone directory, but much more expensive, and as awkward to have around in the living room. A leaner version, with a lower price, would be a winner!
A real great rrrrrrrrrreview for a great rrrrrrrreview book.......2003-04-18
This book is so much better than the Leonard Maltin paperbacks that I have purchased in the past. It is full of more information, it is bigger and easier to read and it certainly can not get lost. It is a valuable part of our living room. I love having it right there to help in choosing our viewing selections. I like to highlight the movies that we have seen and compare notes with the review after!
Gotta have it!.......2003-02-24
Ever since the demise of the wonderful Cinebooks library with its yearly annuals, I've had to rely on the Videohound. While it doesn't begin to offer the wealth of detail that Cinebooks did, it is none the less a very comprehensive listing of available films--both for TV and for general release. The reviews are intelligent and fair and it does have an extremely useful series of indexes at the back: the performer index--in case you remember the name of someone in the cast but not the name of the film; the director index and an awards index.
If you absolutely must know the details about a film, or what roles a particular actor has played, here's your book. Other sources, like Leonard Maltin's guide just don't cut it.
Highly recommended.

According to consultant and trainer Chip R. Bell, mentoring is a highly synergistic, two-way performance that, when properly engaged, takes on the synchronized qualities of a well-executed dance. In Managers As Mentors: Building Partnerships for Learning, he explains what mentoring is (and is not) and provides a way for readers to assess their own attributes for the practice. Subsequent information--designed to be personalized and read in any order--deals with such specifics as giving advice properly, gaining protege acceptance, lessening the fear factor, and finding time to commit to the process.
Book Description
In today's workplace, where skills and knowledge can become obsolete overnight, the ability to mentor is key to attracting and keeping the best talent. In Managers as Mentors, Chip Bell shows how to become a trusted and valued mentor to business associates. His approach is crafted around the mnemonic "SAGE" -- surrendering, accepting, gifting, and extending.
A hands-on guide that takes the mystery out of effective mentoring, this book helps managers establish trust, create a safe haven for risk taking, give feedback and support, and ensure the transfer of knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
Has applicability beyond traditional mentoring........2005-02-08
While this book is targeted primarily toward mentor - protoge relationships (which it addresses well), it has much broader applicability. Many of the ideas discussed can be used in both sales and consulting situations. In fact, it provides guidance in how to approach any relationship where learning, growth, reciprocity, and mutual respect are important. A practical and good read!
A great introduction for managers and mentors.......2002-10-12
The author of Managers as Mentors intorduces how relationships between two people can be a learning and growth experience in any environment. The topic of mentoring is a huge issue in the business environment and I have found that this book offers basic keys of advise to the executives of large organizations. Bell shares practical experiences and guidance in short easy to read chapters, while getting away from the typical referance book material.
Self-assesments, tools, and communication tatics are just a few of the practical ways that are offered in this book. Often times I found that Mr. Bell cites other authors and practices. I believe that these methods are a wonderful way to bring multiple factors to a single situation and base those experiences on resolving the matter at hand.
I recommend this guide to anyone that wishes to begin a healthy relationship of mentoring. It really brings the basics to focus and prepares you for further knowledge in this field.
Mentoring for Mentors.......2002-03-06
Chip Bell has the magic touch when advising managers. In his 2nd edition, he has provided helpful self-assessments that point the manager/mentor toward development needs for the purpose of being the best that you can be as mentor. He paints a verbal landscape that includes insightful adages from Socrates to the Little Prince. The short chapters and direct, pithy style make for quick reading episodes over time--minimum effort with maximum gain. And, last but certainly not least, his quotable language will give you turns of phrase to use in your own communications and presentations. Yet another star in Chip's gallery!
Solid, solid, solid. Absolute must read........2002-01-18
Mentoring is such a "hot" topic these days, I was concerned that this was going to be another one of those fluffy books that don't give you specific actions. How wrong I was! Each page is jammed full of pratical how-to's supported by both the concept behind the how-to and examples of it at work.
Mentoring is a popular topic because it's so valuable in today's organization and this book is an absolute must read for anyone in a leadership position. Within days of putting what I learned to work, my team started responding. I also found that the techniques work well in my volunteer work with the local humane society.
Buy this book today and read it right away.
Mentoring is the secret to effective leadership........2002-01-04
In my leadership development work with top executives around the world, I have found one thing that separates the "best of the best" from others is their dedication to growing a new generation of leaders. I have long recommended Managers as Mentors as the guide book for leaders who wish to leave a real lasting legacy, and the 2nd edition offers even more than did the first. I particularly like the new chapters that address mentoring from the perspective of the protege' because they help ensure that the relationship formed is a true partnership. While the final chapter - Arduous Alliances - begins to address the difficult task of maintaining a mentoring relationship in today's fast-paced business environment, I left hungry for more help in this area. Overall, though, Chip has another winner here and I will make the 2nd edition a "must read" for my "best of the best" leader clients.
