Useless as a reference work.......2004-02-10
The photography is excellent and the purses shown in this book are beautiful, but it is utterly useless for anyone who wants any information beyond price range and the dimensions of the bags. There is no information whatsoever on dates, what the different types of bags are called, where they're from, etc. There's a short introduction, but it doesn't compensate for the lack of information throughout the rest of the book. This might be fun for a collector to look through, but has little educational value.
Great Pictures.......2002-09-21
I don't know much about the value part but the pictures are very beautiful. Of course to me a beaded bag is priceless !!!
Long on pics, short on content.......2001-07-27
The pictures are very good if that's all you want. The history is minimal and primarily on Whiting-Davis bags. I was very disappointed in the content as there is no information on why some bags are valued higher, what to look for in purchasing antique bags, and how to identify the era. I guess I just expected more text than was given.
Antique Purses: A History, Identification and Value Guide.......1999-12-19
The book is primarily pictorial with values given for the individual bags shown. Two pages of history in general were included. Expansion of the background information would make the book more enjoyable. Obviously the values are outdated for 1999 but a wide range of bags are included.
Book Description
Mutts is known for its straight-forward, delightful artwork, its positive messages, and, of course, the antics of its charming furry protagonists, Earl the dog and Mooch the cat. But Mutts has also garnered praise for its creative and colorful Sunday strips.Sunday Mornings is a collection of Mutts Sunday strips hand-picked by creator Patrick McDonnell. Monday through Saturday, readers of every generation have wide-ranging reasons why they love Mutts. But Sunday is a special visual adventure. The logo panel is almost a strip unto itself, often paying homage to cartooning of yesteryear, with Mooch and Earl in a comic book cover tribute or parodying a strip from decades gone by. Some readers may have never seen the logo panel, since they are sometimes dropped for space. Those cheated readers, as well as those who have come to love Mutts' special Sunday full-color strips, will cherish this vibrant collection.
Customer Reviews:
Cute, funny, sweet -- perfect.......2007-04-11
Mutts often has me smiling with delighted recognition, chuckling at a charming moment or simply laughing -- and laughing and laughing -- out loud. Humor doesn't have to be cynical, mean or caustic to be utterly hilarious.
Pure, perfect entertainment.
Best Newspaper strip around.......2001-12-07
Mutts is hands down the best daily newspaper strip being published today. There's a perfect balance between cute and smart here and the Sunday strips stand out with clever homages to everything from Norman Rockwell to Captain Beefheart. Sweet and accesible but not stupid, a rare combination these days.
Hilarious, then poignant.......2001-11-30
Maybe you've seen "Mutts" in your local paper, and already know of "schnubbing," acorn-bombing squirrels and the Lil' Pink Sock. This edition is Earl and Mooch in full color, and the presentation isn't simply the straightforward reprinting of their Sunday strips--McDonnell has put together a beautiful collection of related art and tight focus panels from the strips themselves. The resulting homages add depth to the strips themselves, which hit high notes of hilarity along with sad reminders that Earl and Mooch are some of the lucky animals in our world. (Let Guard Dog off his chain, you monsters!) This is the best comic strip since Calvin and Hobbes, so get on the bandwagon now.
Book Description
There's nothing like a buddy: Just ask Earl and Mooch, the adorable pets who inhabit the world of Mutts. The fact that Earl's a dog and Mooch is more of the feline persuasion makes about as much difference as a flea's eyebrow. These guys have a special friendship.Anyone who has a pet will see themselves and their beloved furry housemates in this collection. Yet Mutts has an audience appeal beyond pet lovers. McDonnell's art is unique in that it is reminiscent of the golden age of comic strips. That's why readers have clamored for a way to enjoy their favorite Mutts Sunday strips reprinted in their original color. In Mutts Sundays the call has been answered with a large, full-color format that-like the pair themselves-is certain to win a place in everyone's hearts. There are good reasons why Patrick McDonnell's comic strip Mutts has won so many awards for a comic strip that's been around for just five years. It's philosophical, poetic, beautifully drawn, endearing, and just plain funny. Nominated for a third Reuben this year (the highest award given a cartoonist by his peers), Mutts has also won the prestigious international Max and Mortiz Award for best international comic strip, two Genesis Awards, a Harvey Award and the National Cartoonist Society's 1996 Comic Strip of the Year Award. Readers will cherish escaping to the artful, colorful, and endearing Mutts Sunday strips contained in this special treasury. There's no better way to celebrate the fifth anniversary of this special strip.

Great Collection.......2006-11-05
A whole series of wonderful Sunday comic strips all gathered together! It was a real treat. I highly recommend this and the rest of the Mutts Sundays series ...
The Mutts will capture your heart!.......2003-11-24
Patrick McDonnell's "Mutts" comic strip is quite an achievement: it's sweet without being cloying, heartwarming without being manipulative, and nostalgic yet always original. His simple yet eloquent artwork achieves a range of emotions; he may be today's most economical cartoonist. Even more remarkably, he earns laughs without resorting to the gross-out humour so prevalent in today's comic world.
This collection includes possibly my favorite "Mutts" strip: Guard Dog asks Earl "How's your old man?" Earl imagines his Ozzie in a cape performing all sorts of heroic tasks, and answers, "He's Super!"
I never tire of the adventures of Earl and Mooch. Of course, it helps to be a dog owner and animal lover! But I can't imagine anyone not being won over by McDonnell's lovable gang of "Mutts."
Shwell.......2002-01-13
This book, the first of the Sunday collections, has great art, good humor, and an abundance of the charm and warmth that makes McDonnell's work so special. Plus it's in color, beautifully printed, and given an interesting presentation. Who could ask for anything more?
Love the Mutts!!.......2001-11-08
If you are 5 or 95 you will love Mutts. It is wonderfully drawn, funny, and sweet.
Full-color by one of the best!.......2001-09-27
To me, there have been four brilliant cartoonists ("artists working in this medium" is a better term) in the last 100 years: George Herriman (for "pushing the envelope" and crafting a postmodern strip before postmodernism existed); the early work of Charles Schultz, who managed to make social critique, religion and security blankets cool; Berkeley Breathed (hero of leftist pinkos - he got us through the latter days of the Cold War - and creator of one of the greatest cat characters in history ["Ack!"]); and Bill Watterson (for daring to show how much relationships are worth as well as playing with that [non-existent] line between what we "believe" is real and what supposedly "is" real). Now we can add Patrick McDonnell to the list. Mooch and Earl have captured my heart and soul with their gentle humor and wonderful expressiveness. McDonnell displays a kindness towards all things essential: humans, animals, and nature. Of the four artists mentioned above, only McDonnell has made me cry (consistently) as well as laugh. McDonnell even adds a touch of Zen (no Feng-Shui, though!). He has perhaps the broadest emotional reach of the four mentioned here. This collection certainly does not disappoint. How wonderful to see these strips as they were intended - crisp color, clear artwork, full panels. If you care at all about life and laughter, this book will move and charm you. If not, then go read Garfield.
Book Description
Giant events, earth-shaking themes, complex issues . . . all of these can make for captivating cartoons. But it's the artist who can take the simple, keep it simple, and still tell a story who really stands apart from the crowd. Patrick McDonnell, creator of Mutt's Mooch the cat and Earl the dog, is such a cartoonist. The quickest way to absorb McDonnell's mastery of his art is to pick up this third Mutts treasury, in which frame after frame and strip after strip he consistently displays his wit, cleverness, and ability with a pen. Mutts is the perfect way to escape into what appears to be an easygoing, carefree world. But just beneath the character's banter and endearing mannerisms are the universal concerns of animals and people alike. The cartoonist's spare style and gentle humor invite readers to fill out the frames with their own imaginations.Mutts, syndicated by King Features since 1994, enjoys a circulation of more than 500 daily newspapers. Nationally McDonnell has received awards ranging from Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year to Newspaper Comic Strip of the Year, and worldwide he has received such praise as being named the Swedish Academy of Comic Art's Best International Comic Strip Artist. This strip's a winner the world around.

I Just Love Any Kind of Mutts Books.......2006-03-22
I have to admit, I just love any kind of Mutts books and this one is well worth the read. As always, they bring a smile and laughter. Don't miss this one!

One Word: YESH!.......2004-05-15
Again and again, Patrick McDonnell demonstrates that he's the most inspired cartoon artist on the planet. For 10 years we've been treated to the adventures of Mooch, Earl, and all the elements, mundane or complicated, animal-vegetable-mineral, of their world. "Sunday Afternoons" is yet another treasure. As writer and critic Glen David Gold wrote in the Los Angeles Times, McDonnell gives us a "daily dose of brilliance." A shameless plug: If you love "Mutts" then be sure to check out the official Mutts website, www.muttscomics.com. More brilliance awaits you there.
Book Description
Readers of all ages have a variety of reasons why they love the daily comic strip Mutts. But for some readers, Sunday is the most special day of the week because it is the day that cartoonist Patrick McDonnell unleashes his full-color Sunday strips.
Those Sunday-loving readers are in for a real treat with the release of Sunday Evenings. This new Mutts treasury is the fourth in the "Sunday" series and stars Earl the dog and Mooch the cat, who despite their obvious differences prefer to tackle life as a mostly harmonious partnership.
Under the skilled pen of cartoonist Patrick McDonnell, Mutts is about far more than the simple, carefree world of pets. Underneath the banter of its endearing characters, the reader often faces the all-too-real concerns of animals and life on the planet Earth. It's what makes this book such a rich and enjoyable experience, one that readers will savor each time they page through the collection.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable reading and lots of good lists.......2007-08-11
It's Eric's personal opinions of dead shows, now somewhat dated. But it's fun reading if you're a deadhead. There's some "must have" shows he describes, lots of anecdotes and "oh by the ways" . He's got a lot of enthusiasm and it's clear he has the true religion.
It's a good book to pick up if you find it remaindered, or used.
I bought it new and it's dog eared, highlighted, and back broken. Obviously I liked it and kept it around.
so many roads.......2004-12-16
This book sneaks up on you. Is it definitive? No. Is it all-encompassing? No. Is it authoritative. No.
It is, however, a unique love letter to a unique organization. I fell in love with this book little by little, often while having a beer or ten. A feeling of old friends reminiscing about shows gone by creeps over me until I can stand no more, put the book down, and head for the tapes.
And ultimately that is the reason I recommend this book so highly. It'll make you want to taste the dead again for the first time. Or something like that...
Cheers
In response to reviewer: are you dead to the core?.......2003-12-17
Lyrics from "Fire on the mountain"
"Your playinÕ cold music on the barroom floor
Drowned in your laughter and dead to the core."
An incomplete masterpiece.......2001-07-24
The book provides some very useful and insightful information. As a veteran of some 50+ shows I learned more than I thought I would I read the book. However, it is almost like it was written in a hurry. The author should have had more friends and heads contribute to the book.
For instance, how could the writer completely overlook some of those great 1988 shows (e.g., when the Boys broke Ripple at the Cap Centre). Also, he rambled on and on about how great he thought the Maine shows were that summer. Obviously, he was there and had a great time, but those shows were just plain average at best. There was just too much subjective content and not enough input from other heads.
I also disagree with the fact that he skipped over whole periods of Dead evolution. To skip over the years 1982-84 is ludicrous. Remember this is when we heard St. Stephen again and Brent came into his own.
Also, he should have had more fact checkers. He referred to a Cap Center show in 1991 as a great one in which the Boys broke out a Stir it Up Jam for the first time, but he overlooked the Stir it Up Jam in Hampton in 1988. (Again, his review of this show baffles, because he does not even mention the Ruben & Cherise show from two nights before, which was the highlight of the four-night run at the Cap Centre that year. Obviously, he went to the show he reviewed and not the Ruben & Cherise show).
That said, if you want to read one head's subjective ramblings of his own experience mixed with some very insightful information, this is a good book. Plus, if you are building a collection, he gives some excellent suggestions for additions.
Are You Dead To The Core ?.......2000-08-04
The title actually allready answeres the question if this book should be bought. It is a good read and it is fun to search thru the book (you can always find something interesting), it is full of more or less valid information , the only thing i have to say against this book is that it is questionable how many people are interested in the kind of information that this book provides (taping, quallity of cassetes, etc.)and that it is only apropriate for people who have been deadheads for a long time. So if you are an old deadhad and have miles on the road with the Dead behind, go on and buy the book.
Customer Reviews:
A disappointment.......2007-01-04
I was not expecting a paper doll book but one that truly talked about the song's words.
Girl Scout paper doll history.......2006-07-18
This is an excellent book for any leader wanting to educate her troop on the history of Girl Scouts. There are many badges at the Brownie and Junior level that can be earned, in part, by using this book. It is written at a level for girls of all ages. I hope Ms. Hunt continues this series to present day uniforms with the diary notes. Very interesting book. Thanks.
A "MUST HAVE" for Girl Scout Leaders.......2002-10-15
If you are a Troop leader, or even a Girl Scout Member, I highly recommend purchaseing BOTH "On My Honor" (Volume 1) and "Whene'er You Make A Promise"(Volume 2). These are beautifully illustrated, and are a great hands-on way for girls of any age to learn about the history of scouting in the US. Younger girls will appreciate being able to dress the dolls of many time periods, older girls will enjoy the personal stories.
Both tie in with a number of badge and patche requirements, such as the "Brownie Girl Scouts Through the Years" and "Her Story" Try-its, also, the "Juliette Lowe" Patch, and "Girl Scouting Around the World" Junior badges, among others! What a great resource, and hard to find! Add this to your resource library for yourself or your Service Unit!!

Customer Reviews:
Eye-opening and encouraging about *true* leadership.......2007-09-25
This wonderful book shows, with practicality and real descriptions of recognized leaders in the corporate world, what true leadership and inspiration can be.
It covers down-to-earth topics like project management, communication, and inspiring commitment from the perspective of the visionary - the mystic - who leads with integrity, vision, and intuition.
The balance between the visionary/mystical aspects and the cool, clear practicality of real life is beautifully managed. This is a book for everyone who believes it should be possible to bring your whole self, including your heart, to work.
Highly recommended!
Changed My Life.......2007-02-28
Many years ago, a good friend of mine sent to me a copy of The Corporate Mystic. Can a book change a life? Can it alter a person's path... stimulate one to question "priorities."
Four remarkable things changed in my life after reading this book: 1) I quit my job as a Manager with an insurance company - to meet and visit with family across the country. 2) Was able to spend valuable time with my Step Dad before his death. 3) Started a new company. 4) Coauthored a book on workplace safety.
I highly recommend The Corporate Mystic... it changed my life.

Brilliance combined with a touch of elitism .......2006-10-21
I just read this book and I am still thinking about it and wondering how I feel about it. On the one hand, the book is full of solid wisdom. On the other hand, it sometimes feels as though it panders to the elite and assums that business leaders will make the right decision for their enterprises, their communites, and the earth. Of course we have seen that this is just a bit optimistic. So it is a worthwhile read but ignore the pandering to the elite.
Some basic leadership insights, but drop the spirituality.......2004-11-27
The Corporate Mystic purports to be a guidebook for leaders of the future, but in reality it morphs the primarily anecdotal experiences of a consulting firm with Zen-like philosophy in a mostly ineffective effort to help the reader become more spiritually connected to his career.
As a member of a volunteer book discussion club for high-potential leaders in the education feild, I am writing this review on behalf of not only myself but a half-dozen other peers who bought this book based on the positive reviews on Amazon. Unfortunately, the whole of our group has been so grossly disappointed with this read that we have all agreed to abaondon the book halfway through. And I'm not sure I will ever finish this book independently.
While it is not a downright awful book for leaders, it is fundamentally distorted. Specifically, an initial claim that the authors have seen more spirituality in corporations than in cathedrals is supported by stories of business leaders and seemingly random Eastern philosophy, all in attempt to define the leader of tomorrow as a "mystic." While this is a nice catchphrase for a book title to generate sales, it really doesn't seem to work as the actual basis for an entire text.
Though the book is organized logically, if the reader cannot get past the initial claim regarding spirituality (as I and my peers could not), then the reader will be left feeling a bit disjointed throughout the remaining text.
Hendricks and Ludeman do share a few interesting ideas that can be implemented into one's work and life right away--and I'm sure there are more of those in the 2nd half of the book--but even their best insights so far have seemed like an elaboration on common sense or a recycling of someone else's mediocre ideas.
I'm sure this book has built a fan base in the wake of Enron and its siblings in our ethically-challenged era of corporate America. But I would wager that leaders in even the most ethical companies do not consider their leadership abilities to be rooted in spiritual mysticism.
In summary, the back cover of the book captures a quote from Gary Tooker, CEO of Motorola, in reference to this book. He calls it "A unique and thought-provoking perspective on management and leadership." While I agree this book is thought-provoking, and certainly unique, I also notice that the above quote does not overtly support the book, either in accuracy or relevance.
Although you might not completely waste your time by reading The Corporate Mystic, you can do better elsewhere.
Enlightening + Inspirational Info for Rising Above the Crowd.......2004-08-25

It will inspire you to be a better businessman (or woman) and a better person with better communication skills, integrity and vision. Excellent book for for a business trip.
