Good pictures and text.......2006-10-03

This book takes us from decade to decade from the 50's to now with an examination of social, cultural, economic, and historical factors both setting the backdrop to and influencing changing fashions. This is an intermediate book in fashion, if you compare it to picture-only books to the other end of the spectrum where text dominates (often no pictures), and we see a treatise on aesthetic theory, anthropological roots, feminist writings, and studies on human sexuality and psychology.

This book is a very light introduction to the type of questions you see in more advanced texts, but will not alienate the dilettante fashionista or costumer. The pictures provide exemplary examples of the styles discussed, and the chapters summarize everything quickly enough to have a solid overview of our recent fashion history. Again, I am sure this book will gain lots of interest, whether for browsing or seriously perusing an interest in a compelling aspect of human history and society. Check Steele's other books as well--she writes with insight, but doesn't overdo it with the dry academic stuff; she also has excellent taste with her picture selection.

This book has both beautiful photographs and informative text. The only reason I took off one star is that I think more photographs from each designer should have been included. I especially would have liked to have seen a few more photos of clothes from American designers from the 1990s. Throughout the book, the author mostly displays clothes made by European designers. I would not have expected much attention to be focused upon American designers before 1980s or 1990s. Arguably, it was not until the 1990s that American fashion really started to influence Europe, instead of the other way around. Because this reversal of influence was such a change, I would have expected more attention to be paid to it visually. Therefore, the lack of representation in this era makes me think that American designers were somewhat shortchanged in this book. However, I agree that all the designers selected, both European and American, did heavily influence their own time periods.

This book covers Post War 1940s through 1990s. In each era the author focused on a few key designers. The author chose Balenciaga, Balmain, and Dior to represent the 1940s and 1950s. The author primarily showcased Correges, Yves Saint Laurent, and Quant to represent the 1960s. Halston and Yves Saint Laurent were the focus of the 1970s era. More designers are represented in the 1980s. The book has one or two photos from Chanel, Lacroix, Blass, Herrera, Azzedine Alaia, Armani, Gaultier, Comme des Garcon, and Issey Miyake, among a few others. The 1990s are represented by a photo or two of designs from Versace, Anna Sui, Chanel, Tom Ford for Gucci, Galliano, Donna Karen, Westwood, Calvin Klein, and Prada.

This book is a fabulous collection of Dan Piraro's "Bizarro" Sunday comics. Unlike other cartoonists, Piraro has the incredible ability to portray realistic ideas and situations while still maintaining a "cartoon atmosphere." His ability to create such imaginative cartoons makes him one of the most original and hilariously funny artists out there. These full-color Sunday cartoons will give you an idea of how witty and true-to-life Bizarro can be.

In addition, each cartoon includes a small caption, perhaps explaining the meaning of the joke, or how Piraro came up with the idea for a certain cartoon. These small bits of information even sometimes explain who certain characters represent and their purpose in the cartoon. Also, in the back of the book, there is an in-depth explanation of each of the hidden symbols that Piraro hides in his comics. This is a genuinely funny book and should be read by all comic lovers--Bizarro or not. Such a chance to take a ride inside Dan Piraro's head is one that should not be passed up.

I think Dan Piraro is one of the few people who have a handle on what life is all about. His cartoons show an insight into our world that precious few have. This latest of his books exceeds what I expected. The comments on his thinking are an added plus that put him over the top.
I don't know how his next book can be any better, but I'm sure it will be. Why am I sure? because I saw his Bizzaro Bologna Show when it came through town, and he was even funnier than I thought was possible.
I really feel sorry for the people in the towns that don't have him in their daily newspaper!!!

I've been a fan of Mr. Piraro's work for several years, and almost creamed myself when I heard he was coming out with a collection of his greatest Sunday cartoons!! "Life is Strange and So Are You" lived up to my utmost expectations, keeping me in hysterics for hours on end. My husband threatened to call poison control because he thought I must've accidentally eaten hallucinogenic mushrooms on my pizza, I was laughing so hard-but I assured him through my tears of hilarity that it was all Dan Piraro-who's just too freakin' funny!

I love his drawing style, the vibrant colors he uses, the secret symbols he sneaks in the art, and his outlandish sense of humor illustrated in every gag. The personal notes included with each cartoon give new and much-appreciated insight , sharing the author's comments and inspiration on each panel.

BUY THIS BOOK, IT WILL CRACK YOU UP!!

If you are interested in a collection of quotes from the stupidest and least interesting reality shows, this is the book for you. Not what I was looking for.

Nice collection of quotes from a few dozen reality shows, grouped into topical mini-chapters. They really are mini. There's only content on about two thirds of the pages, with almost 1 of every six blank before a full-page "chapter" heading, leaving 4 for quotes and, uh, witty? repertoire.

That's the problem. It's just not that funny. The quotes themselves are okay. Not the best. And not the most popular or well-known or even telling. A bunch to which Volk can reply with short quips that may or may not been intended to be funny - I couldn't tell.

On the other hand, it's quick mindless read that can be read in 30 second stops over a few days without doing great harm or causing great waste. And there do appear be people who found it humorous. I'm just not one of them. I don't think you will be either.

This book will certainly add spice to an otherwise bland meal. Laugh-out-loud lines from the likes of Anna Nicole Smith and Sharon Osborne will have you holding your side, scratching your head and saying, "huh?" or snorting with mirth. Yes, mirth.
As one who is not a fan of reality television, Volk saved me the effort of watching these shows. This book also allowed me to find just the right quote to share as I stand around the watercooler at the office.

Not One of "Those" Music Appreciation Texts.......2000-07-25

PLEASURES OF MUSIC is anything but the type of book that a high school freshman might be expected to study in a music appreciation course. Instead, it is a delightful anthology of fiction, criticism, biography, correspondence, and a half dozen other categories, all having music as their themes. One needs to know very little about music, and nothing about the technical aspects of music, to thoroughly enjoy this book. It does help to be culturally literate and to have at least a passing familiarty with such writers as Dickens, Tolstoy, Turgenev, Balzac, and Shaw, and to know who Mozart, Beethoven, and the other giants of music are. It helps, but even this level of familiarity is not necessary to enjoy the interesting and entertaining writing presented here.

One of the most entertaining fictional pieces is a segment from Dickens' MARTIN CHUZZELWIT in which a drunken serenade of farewell is performed on a stairwell in the wee hours of the night. The following conveys the feel of this serenade and of the writing: "The youngest gentleman blew his melanchology into a flute. He didn't blow much out of it, but that was all the better." One need not be a music aficionado to enjoy writing like that, and there is much more.

In the section of criticism, I particularly enjoyed Heinrich Heine's musings on the nature of music. He says that "music is a miracle. . . . It stands halfway between thought and phenomenom, between spirit and matter." In this same article, Heine is particularly critical of French Opera, saying that the then current French Composers such as Berlioz and Liszt had practically deserted music in favor of spectacle. Here is part of his physical description of Berlioz: "He has had his monstrous, antediluvian head of hair cut off; it used to bristle upon his brow like a forest on a craggy cliff." At times Heine's sarcasm is much more subdued and has to be read twice to be assured that it is actually sarcasm.

In the section entitled "The Musical Life," there are segments by writers as diverse as P. T. Barnum, Leo Tolstoy, and Charles Dickens. The section of "Fantasies and Confessions" has works by Lamb, Rossini, and Swift, among others. PLEASURES OF MUSIC concludes with correspondence from Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Brahms and other notables from the field of music.

The book is entertaining and contains such a diversity of fiction, criticism, biography, history, and soul baring that there seems, to me, to be something of interest to almost anyone who enjoys reading.

Enjoyable, but not authoritative.......2006-03-25

Whether this handsome paperback of 300 pages will appeal to you will ultimately depend on what use you have intended for it.

First, this is not the book I would have expected from the title. It is NOT a serious scholarly reference work, containing meticulously checked facts and figures, citations of original sources, multi-layered indexing, and a comprehensive bibliography. In fact, the layout of the material - in visually dense but amiably conversational prose with relatively few helpful headings - works against its usefulness as a reference tool. Other reviewers (see Taylor Kingston's review for Chess Cafe, for instance), have enumerated factual errors in the book, of which there appear to be many.

However, the vast majority of readers will not insist on scholarly accuracy, and will instead find this to be a congenial browsing tome. Pick it up in your spare moments, and let your irrepressible Uncle Yakov fill your head with his endless chess stories - the longest and shortest games, the most consecutive checking moves, heads of state who played the game, the most unusual tournament prizes, etc. etc. Not writing as a historical scholar, Damsky has injected his prose with bit of color, humor, and warmth. The chess enthusiast who has interest beyond opening theory and tactical puzzles would certainly find much of this material to be interesting and entertaining, sometimes fascinating.

The book is divided into four parts, "Games," "People," "Tournaments, Matches, Events," and "Around the Chequered Board." Each part consists of paragraph style prose, in two-column format, occasionally broken up by a chess diagram or chess notation. There are many complete games and game fragments. Occasionally there is a paragraph heading that signals a change of subject (e.g., "Caissa's favorites and paraiahs"), but sometimes Damsky shifts gears without such notice. There is a two-page index of these "chapters" at the end of the book, along with a player index.

Readers insisting on absolute factual accuracy should instead consider the works of Edward Winter.

We can accomplish more together than any one of us can.......2004-01-25

My comments on this pocket guide are the same as those on the other two created by Rath & Strong, except that this pocket guide is probably the one to purchase in bulk quantity so that copies can be distrbuted among everyone directly involved with process improvement initiatives. Thus far, a substantial majority of Six Six programs either failed or fell far short of expectations. Why? Lots of reasons but one of the major ones is dysfunctional teamwork. Hence the special importance of this pocket guide.

Although Rath and Strong do indeed provide a wealth of information about Six Sigma, their "pocket guide" can be of substantial value to all organizations (regardless of size or nature) which need to simplify, thereby improve the process by which they produce whatever they offer for sale. Products, of course, but also professional services (e.g. legal, accounting, management consulting), memberships (e.g. healthcare providers as well as trade and professional associations such as chambers of commerce), and charitable support (e.g. non profit, tax exempt 501 (c) 3 organizations such as college and universities). Chapter One introduces the book's core concept, DMAIC, an acronym for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. A chapter is then devoted to each of the five separate but related process components. Rath and Strong explain how this process will guide and inform efforts to increase the ROI of resources to achieve whatever the desired objectives may be. One of this guide's greatest benefits is its ease of use: It can easily be carried within an attaché case, coat pocket, or purse, always available for direct and immediate access whenever needed. Now more than ever before, decision-makers are under great pressure to produce more and better results in less time, and with fewer resources.
