Book Description
Jacques-Louis David's brilliant painting of the young lovers Telemachus and Eucharis was created during the artist's last years, when the defeat of Napoleon and the return of the monarchy in France forced him into exile in Brussels. Several of his paintings from this period show his
preoccupation with the psychology of love, but none depicts the emotions of parting more tenderly than this painting from 1818.
Dorothy Johnson discusses how David's political involvement affected his personal life and career, taking him from history painter to revolutionary to living in exile. The effects of these experiences came together at the end of his life in the creation of some of his richest and most complex
works.
Book Description
Exquisite images of men, perfect to send or to keep for yourself.
In conjunction with The Andy Warhol Museum and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
Book Description
Rarely seen and often created for his own delight, Pop artist Andy Warhol's images of men are among his most personal and sensual work. Collected in book form here for the first time, Andy Warhol Men showcases hundreds of illustrations, paintings, drawings, silkscreens, Polaroid studies, and fine art photographs in a handsome and intimate volume. Mostly nudes, this gallery of delights includes the beautiful boys and drag queens who adorned Warhol's legendary Factory studio, as well as less racy illustrations of notables such as Christopher Isherwood, Truman Capote, and James Dean. Sprinkled with Warhol's perceptively funny observations on love, and a witty reflection on art and desire by Alan Cumming, Andy Warhol Men is a playfully swooning celebration of male beauty.
Customer Reviews:
The Greatness is in the Simplicity.......2006-01-18
Andy Warhol remains a true Icon of the art world. His famous '15 minutes of fame' was a terrific statement, but in Warhol's case his words and his art linger on in museum retrospectives, in art history studies, and in books on photography, fine print making, and art whether drawn, painted, of screened.
This little book is a treasure. From the opening apropos statement by Alan Cumming, the book is devoted to over 250 works of art by Warhol. His line drawings for the most part are undecorated even with cross-hatching: the single continuous line defines the faces, the bodies, the genitalia, the feet, the lips of his models. These are finely reproduced on several different tones of paper, each a full-page bleed. Then along with little quips from his feisty, shy, and sage mouth are his photographs of men including some self-portraits, some of transsexual friends, some of just beautiful male bodies, some of famous men from history. These photographs are at times followed or paired with the subsequent now famous silkscreen interpretations. Some collages and other experiments with imagery complete the set.
By this time most people including the harshest critics have the consensual opinion that Andy Warhol was a significant figure in American art history. This fine book, very beautifully designed by Azi Rad, is a substantial volume of tribute to the simplicity of Warhol's genius. It belongs in the library of every art collector and everyone who appreciates the male form - especially as much as Warhol obviously did! Highly Recommended.
Grady Harp, January 06
A Really Exquisite Book!.......2004-12-22
What a great little book of delights! Here is a really beautiful collection of art by Andy Warhol, many of the works apparently published for the first time. There are color photographs here of men's body parts-- chests, feet, butts, etc.-- a series of color portraits of drag queens labelled "Ladies and Gentlemen", photographs of a few celebrities including Mick Jagger and the artist himself eating a banana. But most of the book is taken up by beautiful line drawings of men-- figures, faces, body parts, even the feet of Christopher Isherwood. Alan Cumming in right on the money in his foreward: "just a simple collection of lines on paper that magically produce a sense memory of something so visceral it can actually arouse." And Mr. Warhol had this thing about body hair! This is a very erotic collection beautifully produced that you will go back to again and again.
Book Description
Andy Warhol was queer in more ways than one. A fabulous queen, a fan of prurience and pornography, a great admirer of the male body, he was well known as such to the gay audiences who enjoyed his films, the police who censored them, the gallery owners who refused to show his male nudes, and the artists who shied from his swishiness, not to mention all the characters who populated the Factory. Yet even though Warhol became the star of postmodernism, avant-garde, and pop culture, this collection of essays is the first to explore, analyze, appreciate, and celebrate the role of Warhol’s queerness in the making and reception of his film and art. Ranging widely in approach and discipline, Pop Out demonstrates that to ignore Warhol’s queerness is to miss what is most valuable, interesting, sexy, and political about his life and work.
Written from the perspectives of art history, critical race theory, psychoanalysis, feminist theory, cinema studies, and social and literary theory, these essays consider Warhol in various contexts and within the history of the communities in which he figured. The homoerotic subjects, gay audiences, and queer contexts that fuel a certain fascination with Warhol are discussed, as well as Batman, Basquiat, and Valerie Solanas. Taken together, the essays in this collection depict Warhol’s career as a practical social reflection on a wide range of institutions and discourses, including those, from the art world to mass culture, that have almost succeeded in sanitizing his work and his image.
General readers with interests in Warhol, Pop art, and gay and lesbian issues will find this book appealing as will more academic audiences working in art history, queer theory, cultural studies, postmodernism, and popular culture.
Contributors. Jennifer Doyle, Jonathan Flatley, Marcie Frank, David E. James, Mandy Merck, Michael Moon, José Esteban Muñoz, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Brian Selsky, Sasha Torres, Simon Watney, Thomas Waugh
Customer Reviews:
oh well.............2003-01-05
I didn't think this book was particularly strong. It has writings from academics whom I totally admire. And I understand why people would study gayness as it relates to 1960s popular culture. Still, this book has very little about Warhol and his sexuality in it. A person is better off reading a biography of Warhol, especially those written by the people who knew him personally. This was quite an unimpressive anthology.

Touching Feeling: Affect, Pedagogy, Performativity (Series Q)
ASIN: 0822321734 |
Book Description
In A Small Boy and Others, Michael Moon makes a vital contributon to our understanding of the dynamics of sexuality and identity in modern American culture. He explores a wide array of literary, artistic, and theatrical performances ranging from the memoirs of Henry James and the dances of Vaslav Nijinsky to the Pop paintings of Andy Warhol and such films as Midnight Cowboy, Blue Velvet, and Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures.
Moon illuminates the careers of James, Warhol, and others by examining the imaginative investments of their protogay childhoods in their work in ways that enable new, more complex cultural readings. He deftly engages notions of initiation and desire not within the traditional framework of âsexual orientationâ but through the disorienting effects of imitation. Whether invoking the artist Joseph Cornell’s early fascination with the Great Houdini or turning his attention to James’s self-described âinitiation into styleâ at the age of twelveâwhen he first encountered the homoerotic imagery in paintings by David, Géricault, and GirodetâMoon reveals how the works of these artists emerge from an engagement that is obsessive to the point of âqueerness.â
Rich in historical detail and insistent in its melding of the recent with the remote, the literary with the visual, the popular with the elite, A Small Boy and Others presents a hitherto unimagined tradition of brave and outrageous queer invention. This long-awaited contribution from Moon will be welcomed by all those engaged in literary, cultural, and queer studies.
Customer Reviews:
Queer Sensibility and Today's "America".......1998-12-03
This collection of essays clusters under the idea that the characteristic repetition one finds in American popular culture arrives by way of rituals of "imitation and initiation" in the lives of sexual outsiders [i.e., queers]. These essays are intelligent, provocative, even beautiful analyses of such 20th-century culture-makers as Henry James, Joseph Cornell, Andy Warhol, David Lynch, Kenneth Anger, Maria Montez, Jack Smith, and Vaslav Nijinsky. Each essay is chattily vernacular enough to allow the reader to forget that it's academic scholarship (good for your brain) and not just plain fun. Gossipy tidbits like Cornell's fondness for Kool-Aid and little girls enliven Moon's observations of the artist's memory-saturated work. The way Moon re-homosexualizes an apparently de-homosexualized text such as the film MIDNIGHT COWBOY should inspire a wholly new approach in gay and lesbian criticism. And I thought the treatment of Charles Ludlam's and Ethyl Eichelberger's theatre, largely ignored in academic circles up to now, a fitting climax to a thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating book. A SMALL BOY AND OTHERS deserves a wide and appreciative audience. It offers an elaboration of and a correction to current understandings of the role "camp" has played in shaping contemporary American culture.

Joe Kubert is simply the best war comic artist of all time!.......2005-08-01
My title says it all. Will Eisner may be the greatest sequential storyteller ever, and Jack Kirby may be the all-time king of the superhero action, but Joe Kubert is and will always be tops when it comes to drawing war stories!
This second volume of Sgt. Rock stories picks up where the last left off. It's chocked full of Kubert goodness, poignant illustrations that somehow manage to be gritty and noble and heroic all at the same time.

Congressman Mo Udall spins his wit and wisdom in this political humor book.
Customer Reviews:
A light-hearted look at politics........2007-08-11
Udall, who finished 2nd in the 1976 Democratic race for the nomination for President to Jimmy Carter, tells humorous stories about himself and those around him in politics. Much of it is funny, with many one-liners that a person could use for themselves.
I discovered one thing which I didn't know about Udall. His great-grandfather was John D. Lee who was executed for his part in the Mountain Meadow Massacre in southwest Utah which occurred in 1857.
Book Description
Morris "Mo" Udall, Arizona's Democratic congressman for thirty years, was as well known for his sense of humor as for his dedication to environmental causes. And it was during his 1976 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, when he claims he drew more laughter than votes, that James K. Kilpatrick pronounced him "too funny to be president." Udall kept four black notebooks of jokes that he had collected throughout his public life. Some he heard in the courtroom or on the floor of the House; others he found in old speeches and newspaper articles; still others he swiped on the rubber-chicken circuit. This book, a memoir of Udall's career, collects many of those jokes to create a citizen's guide to the lighter side of politics.
Customer Reviews:
Warm, witty, and wonderful.......2001-09-28
Until forced to retire by the onset of Parkinson's Disease, Morris Udall represented his Arizona district in the U.S. House for several decades and in that time, the tall, one-eyed, unrepentantly liberal Mormon cut one of the most distinctive and respected figures in the U.S. politics. As well as being a skillful politician and a hard-working legislator, Mo Udall was also one of the most genuinely witty men to ever hold public office. In 1976, Udall was one of the major candidates for the Democratic Presidential nomination and when he lost, he did it in a way that only a true wit like himself could properly appreciate. He managed to finish second in almost every primary he entered. His status as apparently everyone's "second choice" led more than one commentator to wonder if Udall, who by the campaign's end would regularly great crowds with "Hello, I'm Ronald Reagan," was actually just "too funny to be President." Appropriately, when Udall wrote his memiors, he chose this question for his title.
What sets Udall's autobiography apart from other political memoirs? The answer is quite simply Mo Udall, himself. Udall had a gift for never giving into the pompous self-importance that seems to end up infecting the majority of men who spend most of their lives in government. Even when recounting his '76 presidential run, Udall keeps the mood nicely light. This is one of those rare political bios that I think would actually entertain someone with absolutely no interest in politics. The only time that Udall allows himself to grow overly serious is in his discussion of the censure of Harlem's flamboyant Congressman Adam Clayton Powell and Udall's account of that still-controversial event reads like a thriller. Instead of allowing himself to get murked down in insider boasts, Udall wrote a book where he basically just told some interesting stories from his past and he wrote those stories not for political insiders but for the everyday Americans that he obviously loved so much. I'm a Republican so even if Udall ever had won the presidential nomination, I probably wouldn't have voted for him. But after reading this bio, you can't help but wish there were more men like Morris Udall in both political parties -- men who never let their pursuit of political power purge them of their own essential human decency.
Also to be treasured is the book's final half which simply consists of some of Morris Udall's favorite jokes. He also spends a great deal of time explaining the best way to deliver a joke in a speech. In a time when so many people seem to find "Whasssup!?" to be the height of wit, Udall's advice and genuiness is greatly appreciated. Morris Udall may have been too funny to be President but obviously, he wasn't too funny to write one of the most heart-warming bios I've ever had the pleasure to read.
Customer Reviews:
Sublime.......1999-06-20
Kenneth Anger once described Louise Brooks as "one of the loveliest visions ever to grace a screen", and his description should be taken as gospel. Louise was a shimmering beauty, but she was more than that: she was an opinionated, intelligent, thoughtful human being who knew that Hollywood breeds crap and who believed in film as art. . .positions she ultimately couldn't reconcile. Who couldn't love Lulu?
Very Interesting.......1998-12-24
A good companion to the movie Pandora's Box

Book Description
Fascinating true story of a low stakes casino player who used every angle to win enough money to increase his playing bankroll five fold from $2,000 to $10,000 while simultaneously enjoying free vacations in Las Vegas. The techniques he used to gain the advantage over the casinos -card counting, casino coupons, and casino promotions - are explained in detail in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read!!!.......2005-02-02
I too have been following LVPro's adventures in the Blackjack Insider newsletter. When I heard that he was compiling a book of his trips, I just had to read it and see how it all started!
His approach to grinding out an advantage in BJ play against the casinos was written in a much more realistic style than other books I have read on the subject. I could relate to his goals, problems, highs and lows in his pursuit of the elusive bankroll.
His style of writing is easy to read as well as humorous. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and found many nuggets of knowledge that I can apply to my own pursuits.
Wow! What a ride........2005-01-26
The ups and downs. The highs and lows. The good the bad and the ugly of LV advantage playing. Could not put it down.
Fascinating book.......2005-01-23
Read it all in one sitting. I just couldn't put it down!
Everyman beats Vegas!.......2005-01-09
LV Pro is a card counter. He turns himself from a degenerate losing gambler into a degenerate winning card counter and shares all the details as he proceeds to build his bankroll trip after trip, beating the casinos at their own game of blackjack. Unlike the high-rolling whiz-kids on the MIT team in Bringing Down the House, LV Pro grits it out, starting on small teams, but deciding to make it on his own. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas is the usual rule, but not this time. The good games, the interesting folks who count cards and pursue them, sex, drugs, and money...all find their way into this genuine account of one man's pursuit of the Vegas dream.
Brutally honest look at Vegas and at Card Counting.......2005-01-06
I have followed Barfarkel's trip reports as posted on bj21.com for many months now. "You've Got Heat" is a compilation of the reports that blackjack fans have followed for several years on bj21.com and on Henry Tamburin's Blackjack Insider site.
"You've Got Heat" is not a how-to manual on card counting. It is, however, a very entertaining read about the author's journey into both the secretive world of the card counter and the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas.
Books such as "Bringing Down the House" would have one believe that card counters live a lavish existence and routinely throttle casinos for millions of dollars. "You've Got Heat" dispels this myth and shows that the card counter faces an enormous challenge. Barfarkel describes the emotional highs and lows of his grind against the casinos in a very straightforward fashion.
Las Vegas guidebooks and Travel Channel specials generally show only the glitz and the glamour of Sin City. "You've Got Heat" explores the various cultures and subcultures of Las Vegas from many angles, ranging from the ritzy shows at the Bellagio and other high-end Strip properties to the prostitutes, vagrants, and other unsavory characters at the city's numerous run-down casinos.
Anyone with an interest in either Las Vegas or blackjack will like Barfarkel's book. Frequent Vegas travelers can learn a great deal from Barfarkel's experiences. All aspiring card counters should read this book so that they may thoroughly understand the focus and discipline required for long-term success.

ITS A PLACE TO START.......2007-01-19
IF YOU HAVE ZERO IDEAS FOR WHAT, HOW,AND WHEN, ITS ALRIGHT.IF YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE SOME HOMEWORK FOR A WHILE SKIP IT.
Practical Wisdom.......2005-08-02
There is a great deal of wisdom in this book by Mary Helen and Shuford Smith. The Smiths cover the practical aspects of retirement as well. The Smiths retired early - ages 39 and 43. They consider their retirement lives extremely rich and provide this guide to fill in a gap that they see in retirement literature. They aren't afraid to tackle issues that many other retirement books don't address, such as the reality of death and sexual changes, while covering the practical aspects of retirement as well.
The construct of the book is in the form of 101 brief essays grouped together in eight categories. The first category, "Make Successful Transitions," is one of the critical sections that make this book stand out. The Smiths discuss the importance of developing a philosophy for life during your retirement years. Many recent retirement books talk about finding jobs, volunteering, travel and relationships, but few acknowledge that we must come to grips with the realities of aging and defining our purpose on earth - our reason for "being," rather than "doing." The Smiths replay this theme throughout the remainder of the book.
If I have one gripe with the book, it's the style of writing. The Smiths have chosen to write in the first person plural ("we," "our"). This can begin to grate if the reader chooses to read from cover to cover, because it begins to sound like a royal "we." Because of this, I recommend reading the book in short bursts, dipping into different essays as appropriate.
In spite of this shortcoming, 101 Secrets for a Great Retirement belongs on the bookshelf of everyone approaching retirement.
common sense, not "secrets".......2005-06-30
I bought this book thinking that the "secrets" therein would enlighten me as to things we might be missing in our planning for retirement. The other reviewers on this site made it sound like the book would have advice on little-known health care deals, finding a good place to live, etc. Instead, it is filled with common sense tips, such as "enjoy sex" and "learn to forgive." Gee, thanks. This might be a good book if you're retired and bored, but don't buy this looking for much more.
Great book for those facing retirement in a few years.......2003-12-31
This is a much more practical book than some of the "100 things you can do when retired" books that suggest babysitting, dogwalking or other simplistic ideas. Mary Helen Smith lists 101 things you should think about or do, like consider what is "quality of life"--for example, downsizing your house versus staying in an expensive piece of real estate, and listing government programs for retirees, something you may not know about. In addition, she stresses understanding about money. Once you are on a fixed income, and one that is possibly lower than your salary, you must deal with money in a different manner. Now is the time to learn about finances and money, not after you've gotten your first social security check. With many millions of people hitting retirement or near-retirement age from the Baby Boom, this is a really good starting-off point to plan out your coming retirement years. Highly recommended.
Practical inspiration.......2000-11-23
I'm impressed by how much information is packed into the conversational style of this book. An abundance of practical information is available without it feeling tedious. Your approach is positive, encouraging, and realistic. Maslow and intuition are acknowledged. Caring ways to honor yourself and others are gently and directly suggested. Thank you for writing a helpful book that will positively affect the lives of those who read it.
